Hey guys, I'm searching for a game with a good storyline. Any recommendations?

Most iphone games are minimal on story. There are a few episodic adventures games like

1112 (Only the first part done) which has a lite version. That seems to have been somewhat well received.

Arvale: Journey of Illusion is an rpg that got a decent review from Slide to Play who aren't bad when it comes to reviews.

Enough puzzle/tetris/etc type games already. Blah.

Meh. You can always not purchase them. Puzzle games in some form or another will always be the dominant genre on these devices.

The main reason to not make them mainly has to do with market pressures because the market has so many good ones its hard to stand out and sell with that much competition.

When is Peggle getting released on iPhone? I just tried it out on XBLA for the first time and i'm addicted...iPhone and Peggle are the perfect match

Is there an Advance Wars-like App ?

S-E hasn't released anything except the Crystal Defenders game ? I've seen Song Summoner but it's only for iPods with wheels. Damn.

Tower defense games are the strategy games of choice on the iphone.

Here are some of the other good strategy games.

The closest things to Advance Wars would be Mechos War and Agile Forces neither of which are out yet.

There is also reign of swords which is a good strategy game.

Thx Stoney Mason, I'll receive my iPod Touch this week and I've read carefully all your posts way before.

I think I should just search your big informative posts in this thread.

edit : Agile Forces :lol Maybe these guys are trying too hard to look like Advance War, they might get issues with Nintendo.

Reign of Swords is the best strategy game on the App Store. It may not look as good as other games, but the gameplay is top notch.

Have any of you guys tried out Zombieville? Its pretty good for $1.99.
Pretty good? It's balls-out awesome yeah, especially since the update.

The handguns still suck balls though.

lets golf! is an ok golf game, with the stylings of everybody's golf. But something isn't quite gelling with me on it.

The control method is almost your standard three click one, but its tricky to touch on full power as the power bar seems to not react that quickly. also, when the swing is going down for you to click on the accuracy part, it slows down as it enters the accuracy zone, so a smooth swing is really difficult. (although you can just let it bounce left/right while you choose, which helps, but then that breaks the swing action a bit)

Also, even the easy tournament seems quite difficult, and the first course is tricky - even the first hole has nasty obstcles if you don't make a great shot - and OoB is too easy to hit. I'd have hoped the first courses woudl have eased you in, its all broken up fairways almost like super monkey ball golf than a real golf course.

Still, its pretty enough, and quite nicely done. Just feels rushed. Like many iphone games. Just shows you can't just knock some of these things out, and makes me appreciate everybody's golf a little more

Your criticisms are fair enough. I'll say that I don't find the easy levels especially difficult especially since it shows you the spot where you need to place it for optimal power. Even with the occasionally sketchy frame rate I also have relatively little trouble hitting proper placement on the swing meter.

Flight Control is so worth it. Apparently an update is coming too, and it doesn't suck down the battery of my 2nd Gen itouch. Speaking of which, this thing's battery life is pathetic whe playing any 3d intensive game.

agreed. Is there a benchmark anywhere of the ipod touch when playing games?

Also agree on the love for flight control.

I have way too many games. Probably two screens full of games, of which half are keepers, and the others are curiosities. Plus another screen of useful apps - mostly media/stream related like jaadu VNC client, and various internet radio apps

oh I'm sure I can work around it, especially as I can just wait the swing out and let it bounce a few times. It just feels a bit rough around the edges.

Shitloads of ports for DS/PSP vs. Skybound, Zen Touch, Blue Defense, geoDefense + many other artistic games convince me that it's pretty much a given, seems like all good ideas went to iPhone games.

I hope they open up the DS to this kind of level. If DSi-ware had 1% of the best games currently released on the ipod touch it'd be a must buy for me. And the app store has only been around a short time

Well you could have looked back two pages or so and you have seen the answer.

The Quest and Arvale: Journey of Illusion are the closest thing you have to a good rpg currently on the device. There are a few others but I probably wouldn't recommend them.

Rpg's aren't something that indie developers are going to crank out at a rapid pace and if they did it would take an extremely long time anyway.

The Japanese devs who make most of the good rpgs especially ds style are probably just now even becoming aware of the iphone and that says nothing about the work and time it would take to convert one of them over. Not to mention one has to actually come over and sell well probably before others see the potential market there. Games are always a copycat business.

So the realistic answer is that it will be quite a while yet before you see more than a trickle of rpg's on the platform.

Wolfenstein 3D 'Officially' Ported to iPhone
4:11 PM - March 24, 2009 by Marcus Yam
Source: Tom's Hardware US – Category : Software 8 comments
For many aging (sorry folks, it’s true) PC gamers, Wolfenstein 3D was one of the first truly compelling computer action games. Doom also fits into the same category, but Wolf3D was the grand daddy of it first-person shooters.

Now, 18 years since its release on 286 computers in 1991, Wolfenstein 3D has been ported to the iPhone by its original creator John Carmack.

Carmack has made it no secret that he wanted to have an iPhone game for launch of the 3G model and 2.0 firmware in July 2008. Due to time constraints, that never happened, but Carmack never stopped looking at the Apple device as a viable gaming platform. Of course, it also helps that he owns an iPhone.

“I had been frustrated for over a year with the fact that we didn't have any iPhone development projects going internally at Id. I love my iPhone, and I think the App Store is an extremely important model for the software business,” he said.

Electronic Arts was set to bring mobile game Wolfenstein RPG to the iPhone, but Carmack explained that he was unhappy with the software renderer that an EA team came up with.

“Using the iPhone's hardware 3D acceleration was a requirement, and it should be easy,” Carmack explained, and later continued, “The developers came back and said it would take two months and exceed their budget.”

“Rather than having a big confrontation over the issue, I told them to just send the project to me and I would do it myself,” said Carmack, going on to prove that he’s more than just a cut above the rest. “Cass Everitt had been doing some personal work on the iPhone, so he helped me get everything set up for local iPhone development here, which is a lot more tortuous than you would expect from an Apple product. As usual, my off the cuff estimate of ‘Two days!’ was optimistic, but I did get it done in four, and the game is definitely more pleasant at 8x the frame rate. And I had fun doing it.”

The id Software lead programmer then went on to apply his work to Wolf3D Redux, an upgraded “true 3D” version of his original built off the source code. The result we have today is an ‘official’ port of Wolfenstein 3D done by the series’ original creator, made for the iPhone.

You won’t find the it on the Apple App Store, however, as Carmack released it as a simple package for jailbroken iPhones. Also included is the source code, and Carmack encourages other able programmers to see if they can improve upon his work.

While the Wolfenstein 3D for iPhone is very faithful to the original of 18 years ago, there have been several changes -- not only to stay better in tune with modern gamers, but also for reasons surrounding the radically different hardware and input method. For one, the “open door” button has been done away with in favor of automatic doors. Ah, technology. The UI has been tweaked for the iPhone screen as well as the addition of an auto map, so that new players wouldn’t feel as if they were lost in a maze. Both lives and scores were also taken out, now replaced with “achievements” for 100 percent kills, 100 percent secrets and 100 percent treasures.

Check out Voodoo Extreme for the full 5,100 word release document from John Carmack detailing almost everything you could imagine. Download the iPhone port and source here, though it’s reserved for those who are knowledgeable about poking around an jailbroken iPhone.

Perhaps the best news of all is that this won’t be a one-off thing. Carmack said that if there is enough interest in this port, he shall make available the entire Spear of Destiny expansion. And even better, we’ll be getting Doom.

Carmack said in closing, “I'm going back to Rage for a while, but I do expect Classic Doom to come fairly soon for the iPhone.”

Oh man. Carmack making other devs look like morons since 1990.

Oh wait, this is GAF. LOLZ Carmacks shit not relevant loser rofl.

The open source release is for developers, so no... it wasn't release for jailbroken iphones. You can also tell because the webpage for the game has the "Available on the iPhone App Store" badge on it.

I think there's a connection between the COMING SOON banner on the page linked to and its absence from the app store. :lol

Classic Doom on the iPhone will be rather sweet, you don't have to bother with aiming up or down on the old games so that's already one less thing to think about with the touch screen and motion controls.

I been playing let's golf for about 5 days now and the novelty is wearing thin, a good game for it's cheap asking price but it feels too simple, being able to restart a hole if you mess up without any penalty makes the game too easy (so I avoid using it) and the unlockable items are nifty but once you grab the last item in each class you have no reason for going back to the older ones due to the amazing stats.

If OS 3.0 was out already and my cousin owned an iPhone/touch I would love to see some bluetooth wireless multi going on just like the wireless DS multi we use to play a lot of, otherwise i'm nearly done with the game and then probably won't touch it again. Still it has been good fun for a week solid.

The much beloved Drop7 has been pricedropped to $3. If you haven't picked it up yet, now is a good time.

Now, to pimp KarmaStar a little more.

946699.jpg

If you didn't hear, this is the first iPhone game from Majesco, and the first iPhone game from Harvey Smith.

Gameplay works like this: Each of the three players have five traits - each round everyone gets a set of three actions to choose from where you can either raise a stat or attack someone else. Attacking is a simple dice rolling battle based on one stat the attacker chooses (so if you have Level 3 Money, and they have Level 2 money, you get three dice and they get two.).

The point of the game is not necessarily to max out your stats, but to get the most points - which you get from a variety of ways. Raising a stat gives you one point, successfully attacking gives you two. Then there are lots of bonuses - maxing out a stat at Level 5 gets you +2, for instance. Maxing out two stats gets you another bonus. There's a really long list available.

946699_2.jpg

The catch is that everyone gets to hold one "wildcard" that can shift the game quickly. There are a bunch of them, and while some are typical (steal a trait from an opponent, get two more dice for your attack), some allow you to play nice with others (you give an opponent a trait point, you get 2 points) or make sacrifices (give up 2 trait points for an extra turn).

The game lasts 8 rounds (representing the various ages of life) and can be completed in about 5-10 minutes.

946699_3.jpg

The game meets my meticulous criteria for a good game for my commute - it lets me keep playing my music, suspends easily, and can easily be played with one hand.

It's also a lot of fun - I haven't played anything like it on the iPhone to date. There's stat tracking, achievements, and local WiFi play. The artwork and interface are well polished.

All in all, it's a pretty decent game for $5. Way better than that Oregon Trail port! Go buy it!

App Store Link

P.S. My high score is 27 points.

Fucking Kotaku. Assholes. This is coming out in the App Store. They don't need to promote pirating it. This is why we can't have nice things.

Carmack said:
In the past, Id source releases did not include any data files, and you had to extract data files from a commercially obtained version of the game if you wanted to experiment with the original game data. Because it isn't possible for users to tear open an app bundle from the App Store to get at the data, I am including it with the source code to make it easy. You are on-your-honor to buy a copy at the App Store before using the data. :-) The source code is under the GPL, but the data is still strictly copyright Id Software with no license given to distribute outside this code release package or to use for any commercial purpose. You are certainly free to replace all the data and make commercial applications, as long as the code is made available under the GPL.
Because they used the "Redux" Wolfenstein port, which itself is under the influence of the original source release's GPL license, Carmack & Co are obligated to release the source for this port.

However; they are in NO WAY forced to release the assets (textures, music, sounds, etc) that the game needs to run. But by including those things in the drop, this release is FAR more useful for anyone interested in iPhone development. It's a bit of a risk, but Carmack is kind of awesome like that. You're able to download, build, run, and then debug/modifty/etc to your coder-heart's content. As a learning tool, this is fantastic.

Carmack said:
The original Wolfenstein 3D code was written in late 1991 / early 1992 using 16 bit Turbo C and the TASM assembler and targeted at 286 based MSDOS systems with VGA graphics and ideally a bit of extended or expanded memory.

I released the original source for Wolfenstein 3D many years ago, originally under a not-for-commercial purposes license, then later under the GPL. The old code is still available in various places ( http://www.btinternet.com/~belowe/ ) but it isn't very useful on modern platforms. There are several open source projects that have modernized the code so that it works on 32 bit systems and can take advantage of OpenGL acceleration. I started the iphone version with the Wolf3D Redux codebase ( http://wolf3dredux.sourceforge.net/ ), which apparently incorporated a lot of code from NewWolf ( http://newwolf.sourceforge.net/ ).

At first, I considered trying to build the iphone version as a patch, but when I decided to turn the little research project into a commercial release (and do it in a hurry), I started making more wholesale changes. The Redux codebase had basically gutted the Quake 2 codebase and grafted Wolfenstein into it, which had some nice points, but it meant that the system code was many times as large as the actual Wolfenstein game code. It wasn't really hurting anything, and I considered leaving it all in, but it was such a mess that I finally flattened everything out and cut out about half of the environment code. No attempt was made to make this project portable, although it wouldn't be very hard to clean that up.

The guys at iPGN just put up a story tonight that mentions the next Chronicles of Inotia, and they sounded really excited about it:

The highlight of the meeting, for me, was to see the screenshots for Chronicles of Inotia 2. The game looks amazing! The details are under wraps, but I can not wait to see this game come out. It looks amazing, and fixes a lot of the complaints I had with the first.
