The Official iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming Thread

I'm thinking about buying an iPhone, but before that, I really want to know, as a casual gamer kinda person, what games are good? What's the average iPhone gamer interested in? I'm thinking probably below the $3 range...

How is this possible? It's hard to find a store that doesn't carry iTunes cards.

Must live rural. REALLY rural. Hell I work in rural East Texas and I see iTunes cards in country ass grocery stores...

I posted some links for various categories if you go back 5 or 10 pages and eventually I'll get around to creating a full on recommendation thread to relieve some of the pressure off this thread when I get a spare second.

I've been meaning to pop in here for a while now, but keep forgetting to do so.

Anyone who has not bought DROP7, DO SO NOW!

Seriously, the game is absolutely phenomenal and I can't put it down. I dream about the game, I close my eyes and see the bubbles, I'm driving my girlfriend crazy by playing it all the time. It's tricky at first, but once you start to understand the small nuances to score big points it because a total blast. My top score is ~133,000 with a max chain of 11. My only gripe with the game is it doesn't save your highest score, it only tells you the average score of all games played, and there is no online leaderboard, but hopefully these get patched into the game soon.

BUY BUY BUY

Quoted just because its such a superior simple puzzle game.

Somebody ported Abuse over to the iPhone as Alien Abuse for $.99!

TouchArcade has a write up and video.

R.I.P. Crack.Com.

So many great memories playing this game.

Just purchased FlightControl a couple days ago for 99cents - lots of fun, cool little game. I'm sure people already discussed it in this thread, but here's another mention for those who might have missed it.

Baseball Superstars is back on sale ($2.99) for the season opening, and just got a major update:

- Full Graphic Upgrade!
- Coca-Cola & Gamevil Alliance stadium.
- Lower G-Point Requirements.
- Day/Night change based on your local time.

Still one of the best sports games on the iPhone, still highly recommended.

Looks like utter shit.

Just played one level, the movement is pretty sluggish and controls feel a little odd. The game plays out isometrically and movement is done by holding down one of the arrows in the four corners. Combat doesn't seem that bad, you hold down the center of the screen and a circular meter appears around your enemy. As you hold it down, the meter fills. Full meter is a headshot, less will either miss or take a couple shots to hit. I need to play more of it to really get some decent impressions (one level was maybe two minutes long), but it seems half decent. There's a free version too.

I know I just posted about it, but the words "full graphical update" don't do it justice.

Yeah I was going to post about this but didn't get around to it yesterday. It is much better. Also Crystal Defenders got the update that allows it to be played from landscape mode.

Baseball Superstars is one of my most played apps, next to Puzzle Quest (which I recently got bored of.. this is my like fifth playthrough). Saw that supercross game too; I said wow.

i dont like racing game when u have to turn the iphone :(

Nearly all of them give you the option to tap the screen left or right. They generally just showcase tilting in videos in the say way that Wii commercials always showcase people doing crazy spastic movements for even the games that don't require it.

Can anyone recommend any decent RPGs that are available on the UK iTunes Store? I'm getting an iPod Touch on monday (in post) and I want to have something cool to play on it.

Sigh. I really gotta make that recommendation thread...

Short answer:No
Longer answer below:

The best current "rpg" style games on the iphone are
Arvale: Journey of Illusion.
The Quest
Puzzle Quest
Rogue Touch
Zenonia isn't out but is coming and is an action rpg that sold well over in Korea.

There are others but you're better off going over to the Toucharcade forums and asking for the cons and minuses of those.

I will but to do it proper I need to steal the first 20 posts or so of a new thread and then keep it updated and such and transfer over the lists I've already made. Maybe next week some time.

Why did no one tell me about "The Void"? It's a Star Control/Escape Velocity style game. Yes please!

It's on sale for the weekend, too. $2.99 until Monday.

2K needs to do this with MLB Superstars!

it is. after playing the 1st stage

its stupid how you shoot. tap and hold the middle of the screen when the meter around the enemy is full release which equals to a headshot.
wats wrong with this? you friggin stand in the open and getting shot at while you wait for that meter

Can you buy ONLY the AT&T Data Plan Unlimited? That is, without phone service.

The iPhone requires a minimum plan that comes with 450 minutes of talking and unlimited data for I think $85 a month. There's unfortunately no way around that with AT&T. However, you can get an iPod Touch, have no monthly payments at all, and play pretty much all the games.

24 was just "ok" and sorta fun until I got to a stupid broken Bioshock-esque pipe puzzle. WORST MINIGAME CLICHE EVER. Ugh.

avoid it

----

I grabbed that Fast and Furious game yesterday and it's pretty good if only for how awesomely fast the loading is, but steering feels a little off. Maybe I need to adjust the sensitivity.

It's also packed with a TON of content from what I can tell.

Agreed. I'm having a lot of fun with it. Steering could is okay, but the physics feel great.

Wow, that D-Pad in Baseball Superstars is really good. You only really use it for menu entry but I was just playing around with it in one of the menus doing the quarter circle motion and thinking that it would be good for Street Fighter... :D

Picked up Baseball Superstars and Wild West Guns from Gameloft and no complaints at all.

Not really a baseball fan but it's nice and arcadey.

Thread is too big to comb through, but what are people's thoughts on Crystal Defenders, the square-enix iphone tower defense game? I love TD games, and I have almost all of the iphone td games on my phone, except this one bc it's 7 or 8 dollars. I heard the recent patch improved it; does anyone own it? What do you think compared to other TD games?

I found it to be an above average TD game. The music pretty much sealed the deal for me. I think there is a lite version, so check it out.

Finished my review of Azkend. Here's the intro.

gamefwd.org said:
Developer MythPeople brings a retail quality puzzle game to the iPhone/iPod Touch platform with Azkend. It has many of the elements found in the popular and addictive games at websites like RealArcade or PopCap Games; attractive graphics, a lengthy Adventure Mode and of course, excellent gameplay that has the power to keep you up late at night.

Azkend tells the story of a traveler trying to return an ancient Relic to a temple in the far east in order to lift a curse. Along the way he will encounter more than 60 unique levels of match three style puzzles as well as some hidden object gameplay. Thanks to a great power up system, a thoroughly realized art style and a core mechanic that feels like it was made for the iPhone/iPod Touch, Azkend has fast become one of the best puzzle games available on the platform.

We gave it a 5/5, only the second iPhone/iPod Touch game I've done that for.

Played it on XBLA and fell in love. Not a big TD guy at all, but apparently I like fixed path ones like Crystal Defenders.

There's better TD games out there than Crystal Defenders. As mentioned, there is a Lite edition so check that out.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I guess I have to pick up the light version and see. Currently playing geo defense. That's one hard game.

Don't own it. The people who own it seem to like it but my stumbling was always those awful controls and the price. Hopefully the controls have been rectified with that last update. The price issue is there are a lot of good TD games out there for cheaper.

I respect Geodefense but its too hard for me. I'm a low level player when it comes to TD games.

I own all those TD games. I'm TD obsessed, as my gf says. "Are you playing another towers game???"

Yes. Yes I am. I've never replayed a map in a TD game like I do the Geodefense ones. Just.... hard... like, there's only one way to beat a map, and you have to figure it out.
