The Official iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming Thread

I hated I Dig It. It seemed entirely too difficult and I didn't give it much of a chance at all. For some odd reason, I'm LOVING I Dig It 2: Expeditions.

I still would kill for an authentic Miner Dig Deep on the iPhone though.

Just wanted to say that MiniSquadron is awesome. I forget who said that it was like an amped-up version of the classic PC game Sopwith Camel, but that's pretty much right. It's a blast going back and retrying stages with new aircraft to see how that affects things.

Also, how is the Tiger Woods game for iPhone? Keep in mind that I love Hot Shots Golf for PSP and have never played a Tiger Woods golf game before. Will the controls drive me nuts? Does it chew battery? How many courses are in it?
I'm more a Hot Shots person and have to say I much prefer Let's Golf to Tiger Woods. That might also be because its easier to play on a commute due to the implementation of the touch controls (3 click swing to slide swing)

Astro, nice to see you outside the Boardgame thread. :lol
Thanks, I will check those out. I do actually have Word Ace but I rarely get to play it since I have a Touch and not a Phone and the vs. CPU is obviously not the game's strong suit.

I'm going on a bunch of trips in the next few weeks and I was looking for recommendations:
-Love PopCap-type games that are bite-size but deceptively deep. Probably wouldn't go for any of the actual PopCap titles though unless they have new features (I got Lumines because of the new skins and the challenge of the control scheme).
-Bonus if there are silly things to strive for like Achievements and awards. Or some other persistent rewards.
-Not a fan of tower defense.
-Not a fan of story-based games or platformers.

Puzzle-type games that I like:

I'm not sure if you like time management games (Harvest Moon type stuff) as I have a lot more recommendations there if you do.

No, that was part of the update...

As was removing some game options that was part of the game before the update and you now have to buy as a separate add-on.

Even though you paid for it already as it was part of the game before the update.

Big fucking scam/rip-off by Trip Hawkins and Digital Chocolate.

Edit: And something that really pisses me off is that they use reviews from IGN and other places as a selling point in their description in the App-store.
Which would be OK if they had not changed the game so much after the reviews.
Wow I never realised, dunno if I will bother playing it again after losing my save of all things...

Sometimes remakes makes things worse, they never needed to add shit talking adverts to driver, of all games...

I picked up LaunchBall:

(appshopper link)

99c (supposedly launch price).

Looks like a nifty take on the Electric Box school of puzzles, but with a physics/gravity twist. Comes with a level editor and access to user created levels. I've only played the 6 tutorial levels so don't know if the puzzles get as devious as Electric Box yet, however.

It has really nice aesthetics and it runs really smoothly thus far. Also gives you scientific facts between levels.

Is there some similar game to Galaxy on fire? Loved it and I crave for more :) I think I saw some in the making, (video was showing some new fancy graphical elements they added and which can be enabled if you have 3GS) but am not so sure.

I just got an iPhone last week and have already purchased Bejeweled 2 and Mini Squadron (recommended by this thread).

I like Tower Defense games, and would like to purchase one set path game and one open path game. I've narrowed it down to this list after some research:

Set Path:
Geodefense - Enjoyed the lite version a lot
The Creeps - Seen it recommend in this thread a few times
7 Cities - Also seen it recommended a few times

Open Path
Geodefense Swarm - Thinking I'll get one of the Geodefense games as I like the style, but which one?
Fieldrunners - Seems to be the standard choice, but it costs more than others and is older
Tower Madness - It's free, but is it better to pay for one of the above?

Any others? Star Defense and the Zombie one also look like interesting twists that I might consider along with two from the above lists. Also, is Pocket God recommended here? It looks like it could be fun.

I guess the main question is Geodefense regular or swarm? I'm leaning towards Swarm and The Creeps right now.

Bought based off of those screens alone. Impressions in a sec.

Just played through about a 4th of the game. It's kind of fun, but the stock puzzles are mad easy. Hopefully the user created stuff is better.

Also it's worth noting that the frames per second can't be much more than 15. It's disturbingly low for a simple 2D game.

Loving Lumines since upgrading to 3.1.2... not really liking the fact that once you finish a lap the difficulty doesn't seem to increase. Each time I've played endless mode, I've had to bomb out because I was bored, not because I was challenged.

Quick note, though: If you're looking at scoring a medal or unlocking more challenges, be sure to bomb out rather than quit... you don't get any medals etc., regardless of how well you've done.

1) The Plus+ stuff is excellent.
2) Open Feint is ok. Not as polished as Plus+.
3) No, it's annoying and nobody cares for game spam on those services.
4) No.

Check out Eliminate by ngmoco. They pretty much cloned what's good about Xbox Live on the iPhone.

Well, unfortunately Plus+ is a really horrid option for developers. ngmoco is WAY too controlling - first off you have to wait until they have time to email you before you can get ANY information about it at all - their website has nothing for developers except a form to fill out. Then once you do get the info, you have to submit your game to them so they can decide if your game is worthy. Then in the end, you have to give your game to them so THEY can publish it for you.

Yes, The Creeps for sure! It's one of the 10 best iPhone games, IMO.

For open path, check out Navy Patrol: Coastal Defense. Haven't tried it yet but it gets great word of mouth.

Apparently Edge was taken off the store again by Apple, Mobigame had to put it back up as a completely new app called "Edgy", so those of us who already bought it are fucked out of getting updates or being able to redownload it. Fuck you, Tim Langdell.

No worries. I bought Edge once. They update it, I'll buy it again. Need be, I'll have a page of derivatively named Edge apps.

All to thumb Tim. There's more of me than you Timmy. We can outlast you, Mobigames willing.

I am pretty sure you can change the name of the app without having to upload it as a seperate app. You just can't change the name without uploading a whole new build and putting it through the resubmission process. Your ability to update shouldn't be affected.

Edit: yes, I just checked the dev control panel, and you can change the name with a new build submission. You are fine.

Look at the TA thread - http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=35068

it's an entirely separate app from the original.

I took advantage of the Konami Black Friday sale and went ahead and bought MGS Touch. I'm liking it a lot so far.

However, I have yet to play MGS4. How much of the story from that, if any, will be ruined by me playing through this?

Hmmmm I note one of the comments suggesting why that is

You can't change the name of your app when it's been forcibly pulled from the App Store.

I can't see why Apple wouldn't let them put it back up with a name change though. Relations have broken down I guess, or Apple put it in the too hard basket.

Didn't EDGE file a trademark application for Edgy though when Mobigame suggested a name change? I can't see it on the USPTO, so it hasn't gone through yet if they did (which wouldn't be unusual given how long it takes). Mobigame will find themselves having a similar fight in a few months in that case.

I just got 8GB iTouch for my 2 year old daughter. Tired of her taking over and dropping my 3GS phone. Kids these days are so much smarter and so more lucky with all these gadgets mess around with. She can go in / out and browse for programs like nothing. Recommend me some kiddie educational games.

Goodbye 3G, hello 3GS, that black Friday deal was too good go pass up, 150 for the 32gb iphone (and 2 year contract).

Playing Hero of Sparta was like a whole new game, it's criminal how slow that ran before.

What are the other apps that show huge improvents over the 3G on the 3GS?

Could be wrong, but pretty sure thats only a tech demo and not necessarily something that was due for release

Super Monkey Ball 2 is out. $10. HOPEFULLY it's easier to control than the first one.

Just came here to post that. 10 bucks seems criminal in a massive sea of 99 cent games, but I hope it's good anyway. Gonna wait on the price drop.

Ah, well one can hope right :) In any case anything similar to Galaxy on Fire (Freelancer on PC) that is out on iPhone right now?

What?
What?

What?

There is no requirement that ngmoco publish your game - and no offense to the Chase The Dot guys, but I'm not convinced there's a "worthy" requirement either.

Some free games that had success with my kid:

Echo (a Simon variation)
MiniPiano
Matches (free version of Memory, well done)
Shape Builder Lite (kid loved it so bought the full version)

I thought Cannabalt would be great for my 4 year old daughter since it's a 1 button game, but somehow the mood got to her and she was scared, asked me to run it off after 10 seconds:lol

Thanks.. went with The Creeps and love it so far. I like the addition of the terrain to clear out and the tilt weapons are cool too for some variety.

Now to decide between Fieldrunners and Geodefense Swarm. I'm thinking Geodefense Swarm because it is cheaper, looks great, and from what I've read, it is a challenge. I can always get Fieldrunners if I need more TD later.

Also, some FREE game news...
Appvent Calendar with a free game every day until Christmas!

Today's free game is called 33rd Division. Sounds like it is similar to Flight Control (something I was thinking of buying, but maybe this one will be good enough).

This looks like it could scratch my Rogue-like itch. Not a big fan of the iPhone version of Nethack and the other one I was playing (Roguetouch?) was decent but I'm a sucker for rogue-likes with updated/full graphics.

Just a heads up for people with jailbroken phones - Super Monkey Ball 2 doesn't work unless you get an app called SwapMode from Cydia and turn on Game Mode every time you want to play it. I wish I knew this before I dropped $10 on it earlier. It's too much of an annoyance.

From what I've read (doesn't really sound correct but who knows), sbsettings and all the JB processes take up too much memory and the game won't run so SwapMode just temporarily turns everything in the background off.

This isn't something Sega would ever consider patching (just listed as "bug fixes" or something)... is it?

I'd say get both the GeoDefense games. I'd put it at number one and The Creeps at number two. Didn't get into Swarm as much though.

I doubt they'd care too much if it doesn't affect other non jb phones/touches.

If it is a memory issue then the 3GS shouldn't be susceptible to it. Have you heard anything about those and this game? And how much memory do you have free after a fresh reboot? A "bad" jailbreak will have something close to 40, like 42. A good one will have close to 55, my 8gb had 56 free at boot. Which was actually more than it had unjailbroken (according to the 2 free memory apps I bought for iSR).

And WTF did you buy that game for? Couldn't stand the first one even after the patch. :(. 10 dollars is crazy for Monkey ball IMO. I'd rather put that toward an edu app or music one. But that's why your you an I'm me.

I thought they could've just ported the Flash version of ME, and add in Canabalt like gameplay

Screens look pretty good, though.

Here's hoping this adds to the Edge controversy on the iPhone :). That top screengrab is funny though.

I really hope they keep the game first person, though I think it would work better in the third on the iPhone. The game was pretty unique because of it's parkour in that view. But if it's just as polished in the third-person it will still be a lot of fun to play.
