Might have to bite if there's enough gameplay there for the cost...

EDIT: Ahh, bought. I watched the video, and reasoned that I paid that for Canabalt, and that's been probably my most played iPhone game. I'll be back later with a report.

Just beat Beneath a Steel Sky.. Great game but what's up with that ending?

Was the whole thing just a hallucination created by LINC? And was that the original ending or just for the remaster?

I want to recommend this faaaaantastic blog I came across a few weeks ago. They tend to focus on the iDevice gaming, but also cover music creation software, game creation software, and general design tools. All with a lean towards the modern, arsty, electronica-loving people.

They rarely miss a sweet looking app for that crowd. I recommend checking through their archives for some great apps you may have missed.

My personal favorite that I found on there is "Thicket"... though I play with it on my iPad. It's a GORGEOUS sound/music toy for electronic/glitch lovers. Really well done.

The music in Kometen is really good. And so is the art. I'm having a little trouble finding the game though.

if there was a scoring system, would that make it a video game?

if there was a time limit to race against, would that make it a video game?

I looked at the OP but it's been emptied out, where do I find the Must-haves list?
Possibily not only full of puzzle games, a bit more gamey and meaty would be appreciated.
No Espgaluda II, since it runs like crap on non-3Gs :-/
Chinatown Wars, SFIV... and? I like everything, from good shmups to action, racing and so on.
Don't get me wrong, I love puzzle games as well, just that for now I've got my plate full on the 'ole DS already :) List it for my brother too, and he's a traditional gamer kinda guy, who loves "core" gaming more than any casual greatness, let's say he's more inclined to traditional gaming but doesn't refuse to try an hidden gem, whatever the genre: He's got a DS too but since he carries his phone with him all day long, he's obviously more inclined to buy games from the app store more than anything.

I know this kind of questions have probably been beaten to death around here, sorry about that, but some pointers would be really appreciated!

Don't like to just explore? It's a game of exploration with a laid back/chill out style, the art and music sort of convey all of that. I don't think there's any "game" other than exploring and getting good at flying, the challenge of making the perfect elipse and slingshotting across the galaxy.

Not what I expected, but your post made me buy it (this state of mind I'm in before going to sleep is terrible for my wallet). I'm glad I did though, just spent a good 15 minutes discovering 3 pieces of art/planets. Will play more certainly.

That post there has a link to a Google Doc with a lot of great suggestions. Though I'm not sure if it's still updated (things like Fruit Ninja aren't on the list people, but I'm lazy. Maybe I'll add it tomorrow).

It has it now!

So I finally picked up S&P 2 last night.

played for over an hour and got hooked. so awesome.

I was about to ask why you're talking about Sin And Punishment 2 in here...

Did you play Sword and Poker? Is 2 much of an improvement over it?

never played 1. others in this thread said 2 was more of the same, but still good.

S&P1 was out only like 2 months ago? I have always seen the sequel just being new dungeons on the old engine since it came out extremely quickly.

I've been playing Karate Champ since yesterday (the developers at the TouchArcade forum asked me to beta test the game - there's a video in the thread, too).

I'm having a blast with it. It's the best port of the game, hands down. Very precise controls (i was scared of how responsive the virtual arcade sticks would be), the character and the sticks move perfectly. The sounds and graphics are exactly like the arcade, too ("begin", "half-point", etc. you can turn scanlines on, change the size of the sprites and change the look of the "arcade machine"). The practice screen is really, really great (it shows a movelist that lights up as you do the moves).

On the negative side, the arcade machine has two buttons but you barely use one of them, and the title screen has a CRT effect that may turn off new players. I don't know if they'll follow my feedback or not.

Not sure if anyone here liked Karate Champ back in the day, but i was a fan as a kid (despite sucking at it back then), so i'm kinda pumped about it (which i guess is why they asked me to test it - so i can give feedback and hype the game :lol). They want to release it next week, but i think it'll depend on the feedback they get?

Wouldn't it be great if you could buy stuff from the App Store on iPhone that is over 20MB... then download it when you hit a WiFi connection.

(No, I'm not bitter that I missed out on Castle of Magic.)

Yeah it's really irritating actually.

It took me a few sessions to figure out the discovering planet parts. So far I've only found one, but it was pretty cool. They seem kind of far away from each other.
I wasn't trying to say it was a bad game, I just really couldn't tell what I was aupposed to be doing the first few times I played it.

Yeah it sucks...especially when it let's you download whole albums over 3G which can be like 100MB. I've gotten around it before by VNCing into my home computer and buying from iTunes on there. Kind of a pain but it worked.

You can if it's jailbroken. 3G unrestrictor.

I played S+P1 to death, bought all the items and everything. S+P2 is the same concept but with a little more strategy. Not a LOT more, but it's not as easy to just buy the best weapon and cruise in S+P2.

Not sure if it counts since it's not a game, but I just downloaded a very cool and free music generator app called Beatwave. Basically you fill in a grid with little squares, and a line passes from left to right, turning all your squares into musical notes. You can change the speed, tone and instrument sounds and have 4 different layers of music going. It's kind of awesome.

1 was out in january, 4 months.

Anyway, iWhile more of the same, I think 2 has enough changes to mix it up. The later levels and balance of the weapons and powers is much better. I find myself having to really check the enemy stats before battling to decide what armour and weapon to enter with, and i have to consider the path more carefully. And is the tap and hold to see the rearrangement powers' effects new? It's very useful.

It's as much of a game as Blueberry Garden was. It has all the necessary ingredients. There's a play space, where you're bounded by the rules of interaction and representation, and ostensibly a goal to find all of the big planets. Collect dots, boost to planets, smile at the fun art and playful music. Game!

Fun enough for me, anyway :)

I just bought and played my first game of Civ Revolution. I hadn't played any of the Civ Rev games yet because I thought they were super dumbed down versions of the game.. but figured for a portable version that would be perfect.

Other than really streamlined city controls it felt like a pretty good adaptation of the game. Closer to Civ 2 than the rest of the series.

My only real issue is I was wiping the floor with the computer so everyone started to declare war on me towards the end and I wanted to use my ICBM.. I could not figure how to direct that thing to cities off the screen. It wouldn't scroll the screen when my finger got near the end, and trying to move with one finger either tried to drop the bomb in my own country or deselected the ICBM altogether.

Oh yeah, picked up S&P1 to compare against S&P2 which has been taken up my time and draining my batteries.

I prefer 2, but only a bit more.

I prefer the tweaked graphics and the battle music is way better in 2 than 1.

I haven't gotten too far in S&P1, but I think (could be wrong) that S&P2 introduces magic much sooner than the first, which is an improvement in my book.

Like others in the thread, I got a promo copy of 180 from wondermega, and promised I would give my honest opinions in this thread.

Unfortunately, I'm just not feeling the game - it's not something that is drawing me back in and making me want to dump time into it.

A few of the things that are making it not click with me:
- The game feels like it's starting very slowly, even on hard mode.
- Unlike most tile games, since you can flip over anything that's in the playfield or your piece before you fire it, there's not a lot of pain felt by the player if you misfire (until later when there's a lot of colors going).
- While the playfield gradually scrolls down, occasionally I had it jump down a few lines and it wasn't clear why. Maybe I'm mis-touching and not realizing it, but I don't recall doing anything that would make the screen jump.
- Depth Mode doesn't make much sense to me. For a puzzle game where the goal is to clear tiles to tell you that the new point is to leave as many on the board as possible just feels backwards.
- There's very little space between the kill line and the UI at the bottom of the screen, which makes placing blocks when the playfield is filling difficult.

I'm not saying it's a bad game - the production values are good, and the pricetag is reasonable - it's just not my cup of tea.

Anyone playing 100 rogues? Any advice on that one? I seem to get killed or I die of hunger pretty fast. Will I be able to sell stuff or buy that meat for survival?
My friend made this game. Only time I've ever wished I had an Apple product. :( I "played" like a pre-pre-alpha version on his Touch.

Hey remy! Thanks for the honest criticism - sorry to hear you weren't digging our game 180 too much, but it's very useful to hear what you have to say. Also this is my first dissatisfied customer after a ton of good reviews so... I can take it :)

Allow me to address some of your points, while I have your ear..

Slow start - we worked long and hard on finding a decent starting pace. After much testing we found that people needed it to be kinda slow when 1st trying to understand the rules, even on the harder mode people gave negative feedback if we were faster. The antidote to this is that you can hit the + button and crank a bunch of lines in as you prefer, and when you're a decent player you'll level to a faster speed very quickly. In the meantime, the gameplay is such that you'll never really feel like "this is too slow and there's nothing to do."

I do notice a lot of testers would be mad when they misfired early in the game, so we didn't want to penalize you too much (also, even if you mess up early on, you can often turn it to your advantage somehow or other). Unless you make colossal mistakes - which can happen - then you won't find yourself at game over in, say, the 1st minute of play - but after that, little mistakes can add up and end you.

Playfield jumping - it's not impossible, depending on how you hold your device, that the edge of your hand might unwittingly tap the + button on the lower right (especially if you play one-handed). That will add a line with each press, so be mindful of that :) Otherwise, when you clear the screen, it will throw in a couple of rows really quick to keep you from cheesing or not having anything to interact with.

Depth mode isn't very clearly explained in the app, but once you play it a few times you get the picture :) We created this mode based on a cue from Lift Mode in Puzzle League. Rather than trying to score points from clearing coins, you want to push as many rows "deep" as possible before the clock runs down. It requires a very different strategy than the normal playmode and makes you think about everything in a different fashion

Kill line - also was a bit of an interesting design problem, we decided that so long as no descending pieces touched it then your game could continue. It's a little sloppy, but you can technically clear under that line with a shooting piece so long as everything above it is still kosher. This makes for some very tense moments when things get filled up, but it gives you an extra chance to pull something out of your butt at the last second when you were about to die - and it makes it very gratifying to be able to go from a nearly filled screen, to a practically empty one with one shot (and some clever chain setups)

Anyway, there's the nuts & bolts of our thinking when we designed those elements. Overall I feel that we have a game which seems really easy to pick up and get into for the first couple of plays, but if you stick with it a bit then a lot of the more subtle nuance and potential for strategy becomes apparent. Thanks again for checking it out!

Sorry if there is a more a appropriate thread for this, I dont know which.. Are there any GAFers out there wiling to help a non-US resident with itunes giftcards for the US store? Could that kind hearted person please send me a PM?
