Get mics, play with pals. What's amazing for me is that the movie vibe where the living are our own worst enemies develops in L4D matches. We're always arguing (in a good way), blaming one another for hording health packs, for startling witches, for friendly fire, for fucking things up in general. Then we survive a wave and are all back slaps and chest bumps until the backbiting starts again. In most multiplayer games, we bullshit while playing.

In L4D, we're all too busy screaming "Boomer!" or "Smoker!" as we hear them to break "character."

Yeah, well, that's why I was looking into the X360-version first. I don't really know anyone who plays a lot of PC games, most of them play multiplayer on X360. But I went with the PC-version anyways.

I guess I gotta get myself a mic, but first of all I need to get a game going with people from GAF or something, which is kinda hard with all these damn time differences. So far I've been texting really fast, stuff like "witch, watch out" and etc. Then of course, there's been moments when I've been like "shit, I hope no one noticed that it was me who shot that car, and sent the whole horde of zombies this way".

And I've been kinda lucky with my team mates I guess, since there's never been that much hording of aid kits or friendly fire. Nothing like when I play COD4 with my friends, in other words.

It feels like I'm talking to my self. :{
It has disappeared for good. I heard Valve didn't want the dedicated servers being used up by people who haven't paid for shit yet.

Oh, and it would've been trivial to just load up the full-version maps and play them inside of the demo.

EDIT: I'M M-M-M-M-MEGA SLOW

Thinking about my session last night. (to hold me over until the work day is done) There is some deep strategy all over the game that wasn't used much. Most people stood back to back and fired. After a while you could see people start to set up pinch points or cross fires. Once we took positions on a balcony and dominated.

What I am really waiting for in directed and choreographed fire. Friendly fire will almost cease if people take turns and be sure to reload while waiting, etc. etc.

But the game is great at inducing panic and throwing best laid plans out the window ... like a tank did to a fellow survivor somewhere in no mercy.
This will take time for people to get used to all the weapons, the enemies, and the levels. The basic strategy I always use is for the person up front to crouch, and for someone to watch the rear for hordes or smokers.

I can see how groups of well coordinated players will be able to dominate levels with use of the terrain, grenades, cover, and reloading. The game is just so much freaking fun no matter how you play it. It's hilarious and frustrating when you're team is so close to a safe room to watch everybody get slaughtered by a horde, and it's rewarding when one survivor can drag himself to the exit.

Since I forgot to comment on this yesterday after me, notsol337, Oreoleo and PillowKnight played through the first three campaigns on Advanced (all but Blood Harvest):

I love witches so much. When you hear one everyone gets super serious. "GET YOUR LIGHTS OFF YOU IDIOT!"

I'm curious how they're programmed, though. There was one kind of freaking out in place while I was looking at her. From what I can tell I didn't move nor did anyone else at the time, but she eventually had enough and came charging, and apparently I'm the one who startled her.

Perhaps they have timers where once they are in flip out mode, if you're within a proximity for a certain amount of time, they go ape. Most likely the closer you are, the shorter the timeframe.

Witches brought legitimacy back to the little scary girl stereotype.

Surprisingly, I've run in to quite a few cool people during Pick Up Games. Already added three or four people to my friends list because of the bonding over awesome moments that the AI director has created.

This is a weird tangent, but bare with me here. So last week I was playing the PC demo with three other friends online, and whenever a massive hoarde came to strike, my UPS, which only has the PC, monitor and an external HDD connected to it, started to beep like crazy! IIRC it only does that when something is sucking lots of power (only other time I've heard that is when I had two PC's running through it), but I'm not really sure. So yeah, ONLY when hoardes came, and ONLY with 4P online. Didn't happen at all in single player or two player online. Should I be concerned at all about this? It actually ratchets up the tension in the game quite a bit since something from my own environment is going nuts beside me. :lol

Yeah. Thing about Steam now is you are a lot more connected. Valve has done a great job making it easy to add people and see them in game. Before this game it wasn't really the case.

But then how do you get the "Crownd" achievement?

And :O @ Versus mode. Playing as the infected is so much fun.

Nothing more satisfying than pulling a straggler from the group with your smoker tongue.

Everyone else softens up the queen and you take the final headshot?

How do you kill the Witch in one headshot?

I'd guess you have to use the rifle scope and turn the flashlight off. Haven't tried it yet, though.

Or if you need to do multiple headshots, just have the other three guys act as bait and snipe her until she goes down.

Tried that once on expert. My guts on the floor can tell you she doesn't drop in 1.

I finally got the game! I waited for the retail version in hopes that it'd have that mousepad, which it did not. I was able to get it for 40 bucks, though.

Anyway, if some friendly Gaffers would like to add me:

Steam: morningbus [http://steamcommunity.com/id/morningbus]
Mic: Yes
Location: MASS.

Also for those asking the length of the game:

there are four main campaigns with five maps each. Campaigns run generally 1.5/2 hours depending on difficulty (I've been playing on Advanced)

So if you only play the campaigns once each you are looking at 8 hours of gameplay.

The cool thing is, every single one is infinitely replayable because of the incredible AI director, and because there are several difficulties to conquer. It is seriously a game that is every bit as replayable as something like counter strike or team fortress, except in an incredibly innovative and intense co-op experience like you've never played before. I've put in 15 hours since the games release, and that's only because I've had school work/finals.

The gameplay itself is incredibly satisfying. The guns feel great due to the huge amount of death animations of the zombies, and the game is always intense because you never know when or where the variety of zombies are going to appear. I've played the rooftop escape in No Mercy five times now and its been completely different every time. Even once you've learned the ropes and understand how the zombies behave it remains completely unpredictable and will constantly surprise you. Also, it feels incredible when you get a group of cool individuals who are working together to coordinate a defense and keep each other alive. It's unlike anything I've ever played.

On top of all that, there is versus mode which I haven't gotten to, but have heard good things, and Developer Commentaries which if the commentaries in OB were any indication are some incredibly fascinating and valuable insight into Valve's approach to game design. And beyond that there will likely be free levels and new enemy behaviors if you buy it on PC to keep things fresh.

If you like First Person Shooters of any kind, single player, multiplayer, etc. etc. Don't hesitate to buy this game. Best fifty bucks I've spent since... well, orange box.

No clue how this happened, but playing Death Tool on Advanced, we found a witch. Well, I found a witch and startled her without OH MY FUCKING GOD IT'S A WITCH WHERE THE FUCK DID SHE COME FROM SO I SHOT HER IN THE FACE WITH MY AUTO-SHOTTY OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

And I got that achievement.

I had that happen to me yesterday. Flashlight off, a fair distance away, and the crazy mofu starts charging at me. So then I started emptying my clip into her. Meanwhile, the screen has the big old message that I startled the witch. I may do some stupid things in the game, but come on, I don't need additional things attributed to me.

so many great moments in this game.

At the start of chapter 5 of Dead Air when the somethingorother crashes everyone my team was going "HOLY SHIT" into their mics and then after it happens Louis and Francis and Zoey all say "HOLY SHIT" just like we did. It was incredible.

Maybe you have to headshot the witch with the hunting rifle or something? I'm not sure. I've been killing them by sneaking up on them with the auto shotty and pumping all 10 rounds into them as quickly as possible.

Maybe there is a way to do it in one shot... can anyone prove it yet?

I'd very much like to see a survival mode where you have to entrench yourself somewhere and defend it for a certain amount of time. You'd be allotted some money to purchase the explosives (gas can, propane tank, etc) but also things like boards to put up on windows, barricades to block doors, floodlights, and even the minigun. Game then throws a series of waves at you and based on your performance you get more money to rebuild.

I think this mode would need new, larger maps that differ from the finale stages, because those are all rather small.

Anyone got the All 4 Dead achievement yet? I guess they mean incapped and not killed since the game will end before you kill them all, but I think I did that today and nothing. Maybe someone else got the last one, hard to see, but in the end...this is damn hard to get.
All survivors need to be alive at the time you spawn as Tank, you have to get them (not so easy as soon they realize they can slow you down through shooting) and the others are more or less not allowed to do anything.

Oh and you have to spawn as a Tank.

I also missed the Lamb 2 Slaughter schievement today, because I punched the guy back into the safe room and incapped him there. Stupid me. :(

I love this game, but the only wish I have is that it had a couple more weapons. The current weapons all feel fantastic, there just aren't enough of them. Gimme a Desert Eagle, Magnum .44, M14 and M60 please, Valve.

I concur the idea of there needing to be some more weapons, however they have to be careful as the weapons in the game are very balanced. I think a "heavy" pistol amongst the tier 2 weapons would be cool. One that has unlimited ammo but has a slow rate of fire, small magazine, and can't be dual-wielded.

Magnum.

Penetrating power of multiple zombies like the hunting rifle, high "push" on zombie ragdolls.

Question is what do you want those weapons to do different?

Having more powerful weapons would seriously throw the balance off. I see why they'd limit it to a small selection.

The only new weapon I can think of would be a more powerful, unduel wield able, slow firing, slow reloading pistol.

That's about all I can think of that could be added, unless you want some melee weapons or something.
