The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Holy crap I stayed up playing this online til way to late lastnight knowing I had to work early today, here i am typing this at 630am, This game is awesome.. I played the demo on both 360 / PC and ended up buying PC version, I love the mouse+key control and its silky smooth 60+ fps.

Contemplating playing through campaign on Advanced tomorrow. Have only played Expert so far, it's great fun but still haven't been able to get all the way through No Mercy.

I just want to see everything, really. Why does everything below Expert have to be so incredibly easy?

Advanced isn't really easy. I played through no mercy for the second time yesterday and we still reset 6 times. The finally is really tough still.

uhhh, so you're NOT dealing with Expert just fine. :P
Those Tanks are mad beasts. Even on Advanced you have to pump so much fire into them before they even consider going down.

I played a couple of games last night. One with JSnake, where Crushed joined in. Good to see the crazy bastard. But, my stomach started rumbling something fierce, so I couldn't see that campaign through.

Then, I played a match with Mila's crew. I was definitely the weakest link there, but I did find out how awesome the rifle is, so I think that may become my go to weapon from now one. My scroll bar on my mouse is a little loose though, so I often end up swapping weapons when trying to zoom in, which is annoying.

I'll just quote my post from a few pages back. I definitely prefer the PC-version.

In terms of graphics the X360-version isn't impressive at all, imho.

Way more impressive than 90% of the screenshots posted here.

The X360-version? Nah, the X360-version looks pretty mediocre, imho. I'm used to play COD4 which looks good, and I don't think L4D 360 even compares to that game. It definitely looks better on a good PC.

I was really disappointed by how mediocre the 360 version looked. Granted, it looked a LOT better when I played it on my new HDTV, but it still didn't look as good as many of the high-profile games on the system. It just seems much more optimized for PCs.

Just played versus for the 1st time...
Wow! That was awesome!!!

Being a Tank is nuts, got to take down a whole team! :D
Plus, I can't get that tank music out of my head, has an epic sound to it.

What an odd statement. Your assumption is that every person's PC is better equipped to handle L4D graphically than a 360.

It's an obvious statement that a PC game is going to look better than it's 360 counterpart if your PC is better equipped...it goes without saying.

It's not really an odd statement at all. The 360 version looks mediocre compared to many other games on the system, yet on a good PC it looks better.

Dude, I said "good PC". That's also why I used COD4 as an example too. That game is on X360 and, imho, looks a lot better than L4D 360.

By the way, I'm gonna have to try versus out later, and the other three campaigns. I'm gonna be home in an hour or two, so if anybody is up for a game add me on steam.

Missed the "good PC" part, my mistake.

Not sure if CoD4 is a fair comparison, as that is essentially the greatest achievement on the system at the moment as far as graphics are concerned. Expecting games to consistently reach that bar is going to lead to a lot of let downs.

I can see that L4D doesn't look as good on 360 as some of these screenshots from the PC, but I've never once thought that L4D had bad or mediocre graphics.

Played No Mercy on Advanced with 3 randoms last night... HOLY HELL I LOVE IT. The last battle is so fucking tough, we tried 5 times and then I had to pass out because I had work in the AM.

This game is excellent.

A game like this desperately needs some Shawn Elliot analysis.

I demand something in the form of a podcast or a written article about this game from this man. Something this awesome and from Valve demands his time.

Job be damned, THIS IS IMPORTANT!

...oh what I'd give to hear his sultry voice whisper sweet nothings about the the AI_Director. My loins long for the gentle caress of deep discussions around what a Versus mode introduces to the gameplay and how it may make/break the initial design...

I miss you, Shawn... SHAWN!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did say a bit on last week's GWJ podcast. But yeah, we'll see if I have time this weekend to write again.

Mm. I kinda surprised how well it works as a co-op game. I mean, it's not rare to see companies mentioning how their game is gonna be awesome and people are gonna work together and so on. But it rarely works out like that, unless you play with friends.

But in L4D I've only played with random people so far, since my Steam friend list is awkwardly small due to not playing much PC multiplayer in general. And it's been fun, we've actually had some teamwork even though none of us have had a mic. You simply have to stick together, if you don't you will fail.

I'm on the fence with this one, I don't have a set group of people to play with so this might diminish the game's value for me, on the other hand I loved the demo.

Dead Air on Expert is how the game lets you know it hates you.

I didn't know about the GWJ cameo so I'll have to check that out, but anything else you add on the game would be a huge bonus and gift back to the community. I really do miss the breakdowns of game mechanics and philosophies in my podcasting since you've left the biz.

You should have trained a padawan before you left, man.

I played with a bunch of strangers and it was great. It's better with friends but any kind of multiplayer is good.

Yeah with strangers can be fun, but I already don't play much TF2 because of the same reason, if l4d was priced the same as TF2, it wouldn't be a issue.

Oh the snobbery that is NeoGAF. Atleast you get used to it after a while.

I played on the 360 with PUG's all night. L4D is my online multiplayer experience of the year. It is a testament to VALVe that such a lowly 360 version of a game can bring so much joy. So many emotional responses during the game. I haven't had that much fun with a video game in a long time.

I think you should found a new bi-weekly developer podcast. You and Jeff plus whoever you can get on.

Obviously you can't talk about your own games but you can talk about others. Also Bi-weekly because I'm sure you're busy with other stuff.

You've summed it up perfectly. I played with 3 strangers last night. Three and a half hours later, we completed the first Chapter. Definately a contender for game of the year in my books. I played on 360, and I love it. The game looks great and plays great to me.

Just do a video blog if you can't work out time to get on another podcast or something. But yeah, GWJ was a good episode.
I'd love to see some griefing vids posted on youtube for this

Does anyone know why it would move me to the other team in the middle of a versus match? Red Scarlet, Pop on Arrival and I were doing really good and then when the next map started I ended up on the shitty team of randoms.

Lame!

Get mics, play with pals. What's amazing for me is that the movie vibe where the living are our own worst enemies develops in L4D matches. We're always arguing (in a good way), blaming one another for hording health packs, for startling witches, for friendly fire, for fucking things up in general. Then we survive a wave and are all back slaps and chest bumps until the backbiting starts again. In most multiplayer games, we bullshit while playing.

In L4D, we're all too busy screaming "Boomer!" or "Smoker!" as we hear them to break "character."

This game is a lot of fucking fun.

I got the 360 version as I really can't see myself upgrading my pc ($$$$) to play this game considering i'm not that much of pc gamer.

Played atleast 8 hrs last night and I had a different experience everytime on no mercy(expert). I never finished playing the campaign but wow I had so much fun. I had some friends on and playing but managed to hook up with strangers and have a blast. I spent 5-6hrs just messing around with mechanics and movement but now I feel i have a good understanding of the game and how to play as a team.

I love/hate getting shot at by my teammates. Friendly fire makes this game that much more fun because you can't just spray the area with lead as if you're rambo in a zombie movie.

As for the graphics.....well it ain't great but the gameplay more then makes up for it because I always wanted a team based zombie game like this and I got everything i wanted.

(No mercy Act 2)My one OMG moment was when a tank appeared and someone said "run back to the safe house and close the door and he won't come in and just spray him while he is outside.".....well there I am standing at the door and spraying him as I see him come up the stairs at a speed that has me saying....wow if he jumped he'd kill me.....then I see him jump and in unison my team is like "OMG GTFO"... i stay and spray and die.

I hate working well 5hrs till more L4D

Great game.

How is the game for the 360 guys? Does it look anywhere near as good as those PC screenshots? Slowdown, control scheme?

I played the demo and I thought it looked great. I got used to the controls in about 2 or 3 matches. I am geting the game in the 360 this weekend.

Thinking about my session last night. (to hold me over until the work day is done) There is some deep strategy all over the game that wasn't used much. Most people stood back to back and fired. After a while you could see people start to set up pinch points or cross fires. Once we took positions on a balcony and dominated.

What I am really waiting for in directed and choreographed fire. Friendly fire will almost cease if people take turns and be sure to reload while waiting, etc. etc.

But the game is great at inducing panic and throwing best laid plans out the window ... like a tank did to a fellow survivor somewhere in no mercy.

I love how terribly our "plans" always go. You'll chill somewhere investigating a situation because you hear a witch crying or a tank groaning and you're like "Ok...here's what we're gonna do"...and as we're formulating the plan we either get mobbed, or a smoker drags someone somewhere that we weren't expecting...the game basically forces you to be a lot more reactionary than I imagine most people are used to.

Quick reflexes and quick decision making are so much more important then accuracy and planning.

If you see a boomer rounding a corner, you need to grease his ass ASAP. If you one of your dudes gets yanked away by a smoker, but your friend up ahead is getting ripped up by a hunter, you need to make that snap decision as to what makes more sense, save the friend who's far away from the action or the one who's in the thick of it. What has the better odds of survival? What team member deserved it more? :lol

I've let my one friend eat it because he decided to charge through an area without waiting. Hunter dove on his ass and I watched his red silhouette get shredded and laughed him the entire time.

Amazing teamplay stuff, and I always...ALWAYS adopt the voice patterns of the character I'm playing as for shits and giggles. I love being Bill and being all like "BACK IN VIETNAM, blah blah blah" or "YOU YOUNG WHIPPER SNAPPERS, blah blah blah". Everyone gets into it.
