The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Eurogamer gave it a 9/10:

Obviously enough, it's worth stressing there's not much here for the single player. But I think the associate oft-stated standard caveat - "as a teamwork game, it's no fun playing with random people" - is far less true than you'd expect. In fact, throwing a group of strangers in a strange situation and then one of them acting strange is the kind of random chaos that Left 4 Dead thrives upon. Things going wrong is glorious. And when things go gloriously wrong, it's the sort of thing you happily blow 500-word intros on. Left 4 Dead is the zombie apocalypse trapped safely inside your computer. Take a holiday in their misery.

In short, Left 4 Dead is another deeply professional, personality-filled and progressive take on the shooter from Valve. In a cultural landscape that has as many zombie touchstones as ours, it takes something special to make them shamble appealingly, and Left 4 Dead, both literally and metaphorically, makes them run. In this new co-op landscape, it'll be interesting to see whether anyone can catch up.

So you're saying Gears of War with average graphics, no cover system but with active reloading included would have been still would have been GOTY material?

That's.. not what he's saying at ALL. Reading comprehension for the motherfucking loss. It's possible to judge a game separate from it's mechanics you know? Even with active reload GoW is still kinda bland, but that doesn't mean AR isn't awesome.

On an unrelated note, L4D crashes like once every two minutes in Versus mode. Hopefully Valve will be swift in getting a patch out because as it stands Versus is virtually unplayable for me.

My point was that AR does so little for the game in comparison to the other features that it isn't even worth the effort required to ape it. I would rather have Valve steal the elaborate improvised booby traps from Gary's mod, the remote control bombs from Frontlines, or the chainsaw from Dead Rising.

This game has fucked with my head. After playing for 13 hours straight last night, I keep on hearing the goddamn tank music wherever I go. I can't get it out of my head.

I understand what you are saying, and I respectfully disagree.

Dead Rising chainsaw sure was awesome tho

I'm just peaking in this thread for a second... Question to all those who bought it: Is it worth the 50 bucks?

Seriously love this game. Such a great co-op experience. Just got through a 2 hour session with Zzoram, Pop on Arrival, and Grayfox. MickeyKnox joined later. I finally finished No Mercy. :D

Intense, and quite gorgeous to boot.

From yesterday's session with ghst. I just love the lighting in this shot.

Traveling through the streets towards the Airport was going fine, that is until a boomer vomited all over Zoey summoning a horde of the undead. Thankfully I had a pipebomb handy, tossed it out across the street and drew the horde away saving Zoey from certain doom.

*BOOM*

*WHEE* *WHEE* WHEE*

The pipebomb exploded next to a car with an active car alarm, in stopping one horde I summoned a *much* larger one.

This game fucking O W N S

Yeah, the last sprint towards the escape vehicle is one of the most intense moments I've ever experienced lately. Watching Che and Mickey get knocked down while I selfishly ran towards the escape helicopter was awesome.

Haha, and we didn't make it. :(

I got swamped on the walkway leading up to the landing pad.

I have not played a game that has made me feel so helpless and panicked as L4D.

BTW, that Eurogamer review is very well written. They have become my favorite source for reviews, mostly because their editors can actually write. I may not always agree with their scores, but at least you know it's always going to be a good read.

I keep hearing the hunter scream whenever I turn on the water or do something else with similar noise :lol

BTW anyone still on the fence about this game, you have to try the versus mode, it's a whole different beast, I literally spent all day on it. Give yourself enough time to become decent before judging it.

My only complaint is the lack of server browsing through the main menu, I hate that.

I saw a Boomer at the shopping center yesterday XD

Yeah, I appreciated the fact they mention Chaos Engine as well.

It's become an effort not to shout 'clear' every time I enter a room in my house.

Man this game is awesome, just played through the No Mercy campaign with 3 others. Mad fun!

One question though: Why can't I see the outlines of the sillhouettes of my fellow player through walls? I know it's possible because I see it happen on those screenshots and 360 demo had it too..

What kind of video card are you running? This is PC right?

Banzaiaap said:
PC Version yeah, it's a ATI X1950 iirc..
I'm running on a shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiity ATI 2400 HD Pro and I can see the outlines. I almost don't want to play the game until I get my 9800GTX though, seeing these screenshots really makes me feel like I'm missing out.

Just got done playing versus. GOTY, no questions asked. Versus is just an entire new level of awesome.

When and if it works and doesn't drop your connection to the server or make your game crash every time you turn around -_-

That really sucks, albeit, you were the only one who had this problem. Zero crashed one time and that was it.

Played a couple of games tonight, first one interrupted by crying baby (Boo, baby!)

Even with Xbox Live randoms, this game is all sorts of fun. Looking forward to playing with real people. I find the controls to be mediocre with twin sticks -- a little floaty and imprecise, but with such a fun game, who cares? This and Gears 2 are my two favorite shooters on Live.

It would be fun to play on the computer, but I think my iMac is at the lower end of the gaming PC power scale. Probably good enough to run it, but I'm not all that excited about the performance prospects.

:D
Oh man, :lol!
Talk about some awesome teamwork there. It was so damn satisfying when we managed to coordinate our attacks like that. It also made me laugh pretty damn hard sometimes.

I'm not gonna be home from work for another five or six hours, but it'd be cool to play then if any of you guys are up for it.

My biggest disappointment in this game so far is that there are so few weapons availible.

Shit man I wanted to play this demo. Why the fuck was it only available till the 18th? What kind of stupidity is that?

Lol I'll just download the demo torrent, put it on my iPod and hopefully that'll work.

Crazy Valve, wanting people to buy their game and not pay for the online servers for the demo any longer than they had to. Seriously though, the game is fantastic on both PC and 360. Unless you hate the concept, you'll love the full game.

This. It's annoying to end up to slow-connection games. :/

HOWEVER... fucking fun as fuck. I love it... Reminds me a lot of multiplayer AvP2. Played some Versus last night with some people in the Office, and it's just so good when things get co-ordinated... I was behind some bottling tanks and spawned in as a Hunter... one human player ran ahead and I jumped him. As I did that (actually by chance) the 2 at the back of the group got swarmed by a horde courtesy of a Boomer... and just as I was ripping the dude's heart out, I saw his remaining ally coming to save him... when, I saw the blue outline of my friend wanting to spawn in, who happened to spawn behind as a Smoker, and just as his friend turned the corner to kill me - mine spawned in, and tied him up with his tongue, winning us the game! :)

Another time, me and a buddy were in the sewers level (just after the demo level) and our two CPU teammates ran ahead, and got mauled by a guy who'd just spawned in as a Tank! I saw him come running at me, and ran off screaming for my life. We ended up in a room circle-strafing the Tank... and almost killed him, BUT... I suddenly got grabbed by a Smoker and dragged off. Instead of waiting it out and killing the Tank, my buddy ran off screaming into the tunnels and left me to die. I was like "WTF? Why'd you run off?" in chat. His answer? "I got scared." LoL.

Also, knocking people off the roof of Mercy Hospital as a Tank is just pure awesome. :)

The difficulties feel off in my opinion. "Advanced" might as well be medium, because 3 fairly new players and an AI have managed to beat 3 campaigns with very few deaths thus far. We would have started on expert but we didn't want to have nothing to look forward to after our first runs.

Are you sure you're playing L4D? Like really sure?

Worries of future playthroughs feeling repetitive and stale should not be a concern in this game.

It's written by Kieron Gillen, who whatever his flaws and failings -- and there are quite a few -- is probably one of the top four or five games journalists in the world.

:lol I suck so bad at vs mode, but it's really, really fun. Haven't been a tank yet, though.

Let's try to play it sometime, Pop.

Haven't touched it, but I watched my 9 year old niece play it shoot her fellow survivors in the head. I'll probably play it when I see a friends game that isn't full.

If you like Eurogamer you should check out Rock, Paper, Shotgun (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/) it's by people who write for Eurogamer, and PC Gamer.

Anybody else wish there was a difficulty level between advanced and expert? Advanced on No Mercy with one of my friends was fairly easy. Only had to replay the finale a couple of times with my friend. On expert we couldn't finish chapter 2. I'm sure we'll eventually get it, but it seems like a pretty big difference between the two settings.

I initially though Advanced was more difficult in the retail version, but when I played a couple levels a second time yesterday, they were much easier the second time. I'm thinking expert will be fine once you have a general idea of what you should be doing in every level.

God what fun, was playing No Mercy campaign for 4 hours and still couldn't beat the rooftop on expert. It a shame I have to go to work.

here's a response without the valve defence force-esque attitude.

the demo in many ways was really a public beta. it wasn't called that, but that's pretty much what it was all the same. they fixed a bunch of issues prior to release and rolled all the demo servers over to the full game to ensure that the full game would have the best possible online experience.

Has anyone tried running Left 4 Dead on a Macbook with Boot Camp? :D

I think someone in this thread is doing just that. I'm bootcamping with a 2.66 GHz intel core 2 Duo with only 2 gigs of memory (will upgrade soon though) and I can run this game in a high setting (I have to turn down the shader to medium though).

How is the game for the 360 guys? Does it look anywhere near as good as those PC screenshots? Slowdown, control scheme?

I'll just quote my post from a few pages back. I definitely prefer the PC-version.

ItsInMyVeins said:
Well, I tried the X360-version first I didn't like the game at all. It moves too fast and the aim isn't, for obvious reasons, as good as in the PC-version. I played with a friend and most of the time it felt like I was playing some old school FPS arcade style or something, simply because it's so messy and I found it hard to play with any other kind of strategy than just shooting in every direction. I think it's because of the speed of both your characters and the zombies, combined with the controls.
And as soon as someone went down the other one would just run there, shooting and meleeing randomly to try to rescue the downed team mate.

In the PC-version it looked a lot better in regards of graphics, and it controlled better. To me it felt like I didn't move as fast and floaty as in the X360-version, and the aim is better which helps a lot when there are so many enemies. I've only played like one game of L4D on the PC so far, but my impression there was that it was easier to use strategies and didn't as easily end up just like a random arcade shooter.

Thing is, I like console FPS, and I mainly play console games. For instance, COD4 to X360 is awesome and I've played it a lot, but in that game I can actually controll the character and aim well. L4D, to me, is a lot more floaty in terms of control, which probably is why I ended up playing it like an shooter from like ten years back.

In terms of graphics the X360-version isn't impressive at all, imho.
