The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Last night I set up a couple tvs in my room, a couple xboxes and a bunch of my best pals came over and we all played some 4 player campaign in the dark. It was incredible :D

Advanced is so hard, jesus! We played Blood Harvest and the last person BARELY made it out alive at the end. It took us 2 hours. It was pretty epic at the end there....

One question though: Why can't I see the outlines of the sillhouettes of my fellow player through walls? I know it's possible because I see it happen on those screenshots and 360 demo had it too..

Anyone got any idea? :( My videocard is an Ati X1950pro

If you plan on playing with GAFers, the majority of us are playing on Steam.
PC will most likely get more support from Valve (and free DLC)
Mods. Someone is working on a Dawn of the Dead mall map right now.

Developer support worth giving a damn about for one thing. Including future updates/expansions that will be PC exclusive. PC version is cheaper, and will undoubtedly have the larger community of people to play with.
The only way I would recommend the 360 version is if you have a couple IRL friends you are already planning on playing with, and even then..

Edit: And better controls!

And I guess it's worth re-posting in here since it's still coming up here and there:
360 demo can still be downloaded from the online Marketplace to your Xbox even though it's not on the console's marketplace anymore.

Most people on my friends list played 5-15 hours of Left4Dead demo.
I suspect the primary reason why they removed it might be that they fear that people will play the demo endlessly and never buy the game. I certainly have done that at least once. I know people who do that regularly. Depends on the sort of game it is.

They could probably limit the levels that can be loaded fairly easily.

Yeah. I might rent it for 360 if/when I resume my Gamefly membership. It's just frustrating that I really looked forward to playing the demo and can't because I didn't have enough space while it was up.

Edit: How do I download that link to my 360?

Second Edit: I think I've got it figured out, actually. I never knew you could just add stuff to your gamertag from your computer.

Third Edit: "This offer is not available in your region." I live in the USA... oh well.

Played my first expert campaign (No Mercy). Was fun as hell and hard too. Only two of us made it out alive, damn tank spawned right before the chopper...I want a mod where I can shoot the AI director :lol .

Google doesn't seem to immediately bring up any no outline glitches or bugs. Tried futzing with the video settings?

I haven't kept up with this thread as it's just too huge -- why was the demo yanked of Xbox Live Marketplace? Does anyone know if it will be coming back?

I got this in the mail today and dabbled earlier but I havn't used Steam a whole lot and as a result don't have any friends yet (awwwwww) So feel free to add me. I'm pretty good at shooters, I wont let you die :D

I've been told that the 360 version's 4 player "system link support" is for two systems only, with 2 people on each system in split screen, rather than 4 individual systems. Can anyone refute that for me? My friends and I have been looking for a good system link co-op game since Halo 3 with no luck.

My guess is to sell new copies instead of people playing the demo. The demo was yanked off of steam as well.

Just finished Death Toll on normal (yeah, got tired of dying)

But man this game brings out the devil in you.
I played a lot with a guy called launchrokkit or something and we partnered alot, he always had my back and I did my best to cover his.
But as the story unfolds and the boat arrives we notice that another survivor is pinned under a huge group of zombies, and a tank was also in on the bullying.

As a true survivalist I stood safely on the boat and shot my assault rifle dry. Then I remained steadfast on the boat watching my partner run back to help him only to get sucked in by a smoker.
As time went by and my partner lay there incapacitaded and getting smashed by the tank, the zombies started to rush the boat, and what do I do?
I started firing ON MY PARTNER, just to save my own skin :P But hey, it was him or the remaining two of us.

Edit: And no, I didn't kill him, perhaps just take a few hp off to get the tank to finish it faster.

If you're playing on Advanced or Expert, it's unfortunately often a bad idea to go back after a teammate when your rescue has arrived and they're being hounded by zombies, unless they're close enough to the chopper/boat/etc. Chances are you'll just get killed along with him or her.

And that reminds me of another funny thing that happened last night while playing. It was a similar situation as yours, with two of our teammates being mobbed by hordes in the last stage of No Mercy, while the other two of us made it to the helicopter and helped as best as we could from there. However, a Tank showed up on the platform right in front, and I made sure to position myself in the helicopter in a way that the Tank couldn't get to me. The other guy didn't bother doing the same, and the Tank just came up and knocked him right out of the other side of the helicopter and all the way down. I laughed so damn hard. The game ended shortly after that and he magically still ended up being counted as a survivor, though. Even he was surprised by that.

Has anyone been playing on 360 with no access to a gaming PC? Like is it totally worthless on 360?

It's not worthless, but you'll get full support on the PC.
Online is Free, DLC is Free, and users can make as many custom campaigns as they want.
Also, there will be MOD's...
There's no Limit to what can be done on the PC version.

Note that Valve said it would be pulling the demos a while ago when the game was officially released.

Well, one reason it was yanked was because that since Valve rapidly iterates the game, they also change their back-end. They would have to patch the demo to get multiplayer working again possibly if they changed it, which would lead to a bad experience if someone downloaded it.

Oh, and it's to keep it fair to PC gamers. If they didn't stop the PC Demo, what's to stop people from copying over the maps to the demo, or playing mods only? People already started doing these things, and Valve knew they would need to push people to go buy a copy now that they were hooked, or else everyone would just stay with the demo.

Full version though is totally worth it.

Well, me not having a Gaming PC is kind of a limit. I just wanted to make sure it was worth a purchase.

That link just goes to the normal steam homepage. What's your steam name?

I don't see why you wouldn't have an awesome time with the 360 version.

A gaming PC is always worth a purchase.

Of course the game is not worthless on the x360. Some even say TF2 is not worthless on X360.

Well it's the best co-op game this decade, that's for sure.
I've always been about co-op, ever since the NES,
so L4D to me is well worth it.

Hell fucking yes. The 360 version runs great and plays great, it just doesn't look as great compared to the pc version.

Oh no, I meant Left 4 Dead 360 being worth it, not a Gaming PC.

The game is effin awesome on 360. It's very smooth, has great split screen, dedicated servers for lag-less online play (both co-op and competitive), most people have headsets so communication is easy and helps a lot, the maps are all fun to play again and again. Just buy it and add me MercuryLS :D

SWEET!

Anyone want to play vs in a party?

None of my friends are interested in pc l4d, so i play public versus games. The reason for buying l4d shines during a good vs match, but it is such a hit-or-miss and time consuming process using the matchmaking or finding a lobby. I'm not awesome at the game but I am trying to learn, which is really difficult when half the people you run into are either too impatient or too apathetic about working as a team.

my steam id is 'bistromathics'...i posted in the meetup thread but that doesnt seem as active. hit me up if you're down for some versus

Ugh, this stutter-crashes are driving me insane. Switching off multicore processing doesn't fix it. Reinstalling drivers didn't do it.

Make sure you join the specific L4D GAF group on Steam. Once you're in there, you can just go through the long grueling process of adding each person to your friends list. Then, when you start up the game, it will say 'You have 49 friends playing' or something ridiculous like that.

i did join the group, and i've tried joining some of the games from the 'join' option, but often times either the server will be full or i'll be put on the other team because they are already partied with other gaffers.

is it any different if they are friended?

edit: also, just clicking join, you cant tell if they are playing campaign or versus w/ the group browser

It's worthless to me.
There is no mouse support on 360. And I don't have Xbox Live Gold.

If Microsoft would have fixed those two problems, I would have bought it for 360 instead, but they are crippling to this game. (And many others.)

I'd really much prefer to play the Xbox version, but sadly, due to Microsoft policy, it's worthless.

I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW! I thought I was the only one. Sometimes ctrl-alt-del will fix it and I can hop back in, other times the game will crash and I have to re-load the game and wait for myself to lag out so I can rejoin the game I was in without getting a "server full" message. And near as I can tell it only happens on Versus. I love this game but the crashing is really REALLY straining my patience. And I'm sure the people I play with don't appreciate when I go AFK for 15 seconds at a time. All I can hope is Valve is aware of the problem and will patch it very very soon.
