And what's to stop anyone from easily pirating a Source engine game, if they're willing to do sketchy things with maps? :D
The difference is the ability to play on legitimate Steam servers vs. needing to do a shitload of work doing whatever you need to do with a hacked version of Steam.

If the demo still existed, all someone would have to do to download maps from the full version is connect to a server running them. With a pirated version, it wouldn't be nearly that easy.

I am dying to play this game, but I have an old computer and not the necessary funds to buy a new one (upgrading is a waste of money).

Intel 2.80 ghz
Nvidia 6600 GT 128 mb
1,5 GB Ram

Just under the required specs. Will it be playable? I don't need great graphics, just great gameplay ... Half Life 2 runs quite good on it.

You'll be ok. I'm running it with an AMD 1800 and a 9700pro (radeon) at my parent's place cause steam doesn't work where I live.

Getting 15/30 fps @ 640 480.

You should do a little better at least, but even here it's very playable.

Might be able to squeeze in one more expert run (Dead Air or No Mercy) tonight before I have to pack things up for tomorrow, if anyone's interested.

You betcha.

Awsum.

Also Costanza, that's my favorite line too :lol

First time hearing it when I first played the full game on release, me and all my friends just started cracking up when we heard her say that. :lol

10ish? I'll be down for either after the hockey game.

That was an awful server for me just now. At least 500ms, haven't checked, but I incapped Dave at least twice without even aiming in his direction. :lol

Well thanks for sticking with us!

That was such a crazy last run, Dave with only like 1 health STILL made it into the rescue vehicle. It was great.

Legendary game. I incapped Fallengorn like 10 times, Won dished it right back to me, and we all end up crawling into the APC and it turns out YOU shot more of us than anyone else. :lol

You guys probably didn't notice that as I literally crawled around with 1 life after the last tank fight, the APC rolled around and the final rush of zombies started coming, I jumped down from the barn right next to one of you and a hunter jumped his ass, missing me by inches. I shot it off and jumped first. I spent the next few minutes saying out loud: "wooooooooooooo"

Shit like that's what makes this game so fun. Good times, gents.

I've managed to do it. It even says so in-game, but just not on my Steam profile.
I almost let somebody achieve that. Wait, it should have happened. One of us got incapacitated right outside the door, and we were all in the safe room. Everybody else said 'just shut the door!' so I did, but then I felt bad so I went outside. It was okay at first, and I was reviving him, then all of them came at the same time. I got incapacitated, and by the time I got revived, Louis was dead. I don't think they got the achievement, but one of my team mates got the one for going outside the safe room to save a team mate.

Thank you to everyone who replied. I have ordered L4D, so I will be joining you soon :-)

Wow. Thanks Twig, Blizzard, and fallengorn. We survived (well Twig almost did :( ) Dead Air expert. Holed up in the spawn closet and fended off people. On the fourth or fifth try of that, we finally were able to make it up there, but Twig fell at the hands of the second tank.

I'm hoping to maybe finish off the last expert campaign on my list, No Mercy, sometime tomorrow. Woo!

Infected loading time can get pretty annoying. Is it 15? 20? 30? When the countdown reaches it's end, will it actually go into spawn mode or hold you at the "entering spawn mode" screen for even more time?

Thankfully, the only complaint I can put on this game is that I can't play it enough.

I have some complaints about certain servers. Melee limits, increasing the minimum distance of spawning as infected, and making it where only THREE people can spawn on the infected team at a time. That's just completely stupid, you're pissing off one player by not letting him do something until someone else dies.

I wish I could just set myself to always play as The Infected. I absolutely love the strategy involved in getting a few good hits in.

The worst part is there's no way to filter which servers you connect to. We need an integrated server browser in the lobby.

This is my favorite game in years, but it's only fun when you're playing with friends or online people you know are good at the game. Playing with randoms makes me want to slice my own throat.

The vote system on the 360 in Versus mode seems pointless to me. A common problem I've seen are assholes that come in a game and don't want to play as the Survivors, so they just team kill in the safe room at the start of the match and end it fast. Votes only work on your own team, so if two guys are coordinating to team kill, they can't be voted out. The server is fucked and you just have to leave and find a new one.

;_; I died. I still have yet to finish an expert campaign. ;_;

;_;

I was reading some crap earlier, and some people claim that the melee nerf on some versus servers is in the default dedicated server settings.

Which I find hard to believe, but I dunno.

My friend runs a server with all default settings. One of my friends was saying he wasn't hitting as fast as normal, I didn't notice though.

You could argue that playing with randoms offers the most authentic (and challenging) zombie apocalypse experience. But I would take along at least one reliable person to keep the boss infected from ending your game early.

I understand that maybe Steam has some way of stopping "hacked" games from joining servers, but I don't know what's involved. It's a DRM method so I'm assuming someone has a way around it, but maybe Steam has the magic key. Anyway, it just makes me sad if that's apparently an unsolvable problem with the Source engine. You're not for SecuROM (high level) and Starforce type crap, right? It's a pity that you can't use the source engine for stuff without it being easily hackable or whatever. The Tomb Raider demo is still out, with most of one level, for instance, and I haven't heard people talking about playing the full game with the demo, though maybe that's easily possible. But eh...I know neither Source engine technology nor Steam hacking technology so it's all speculation for me.

On an actual Left 4 Dead note, it took just barely over 3 hours to do Dead Air on expert. We died a times early on from mostly stupid things (lots of them by me, by my teammates were nice or something), but the finale is REALLY brutal. We tried all on top of the truck, we tried all on the bridge (and discovered that the back gets knocked off, haha). Finally we all went in the spawn closet, which worked best, but it still took us like five or six tries before we could get past the second tank...and even then poor Twig got killed to save the team. He still needs to escape on an expert campaign. ;(

*edit*

I need to play as Francis more. I always turn my sound down because I'm trying to save my hearing from stuff like the incredibly high-pitched hunter screams, and I don't think I've EVER heard Francis listing the things he hates. :(

It's not a matter of the Source engine being "hackable", it's the simple matter of it being *extensible*. It's easy as pie to add custom maps to all source games, which means that it would be easy as pie to add the full version's maps into the demo.

Once the full version of the game was made available, so were the maps that people could have then easily imported into the demo to play the full game. No hacking, no cracking, no shady practices needed.

He said it on the No Mercy elevator when I heard it, though it may have been one of the z or x voice commands.

And of course he will say just one quite commonly.

Taking maps from the full version of a game would be shady, then. You're taking a file from a full game, just like taking HL2.EXE from a full game. You wouldn't have access to the file if you didn't buy the game.

It's just a technicality anyway. I know it might be EASY for people to play full maps, but I don't see how that's really a good argument against demos. Better arguments against demos are 1) reserving servers for regular players, 2) free weekends allowing the full game to be played, and maybe other things. Perhaps Valve could develop a non-extensible benchmark program that just shows flames and zombies, to give people an idea of whether their computer can handle the game. That's a large part of what people are wanting, until free weekends show up. :P

Why can't other people see my flashlight? Seeing in dark places is a big part of the strategy and having one person hold steady with a light seems to be useless.

I've only been playing with random folks, and thankfully, they've all been quite competent and friendly. If anything, most people I've encountered seem to have the most trouble with Witches. I suppose the concept of actually not killing something completely eludes them.

But yeah, this is by far my favorite game of the year. It's just so damn fun.

I'm guessing maybe because of performance reasons. I think I've seen people mention their own flashlight causes performance issues, and if you were doing projections for everyone? *shrug* But yeah, it's kinda annoying in really dark rooms. It's also a little silly because actually a flashlight in a pitch black room will ambiantly light the whole room, as well as reflect off things. Again, probably performance and difficulty reasons prevent that, I suppose.

I think that was one mistake Valve made as far as achievements. I see people going for "cr0wnd" all the time (kill a witch with one headshot) and getting themselves killed in the process, which hurts the entire team. If you're going to do that, at least let your teammates know so you can all be ready to take her down quickly if the shot fails. Some do that, but most don't.

I would never play with such cowardly bastards achievement or not. This is why I only game with close friends and family. If you can't trust your team then they're worthless.

Well it sucks. Even the Doom 3 engine had that and I thought Valve was suppose to be better than ID. Speaking of which I can't wait to for Rage.

I've never really played Doom 3 but the flashlights in L4D cast some pretty complex shadows. Adding in the fact that you can swing the weapons very fast, it has to do a whole bunch of calculations very quickly to get the shadows right.

:lol Games always have to do calculations fast, usually the speed the player spins doesn't affect it to much.

Even still L4D shadows are nice, and I like the flashlights.

Alright, I'm going ingame to play some Versus :D

If you guys are interested, Steam: Iced_Eagle

Actually the flashlights in L4D are nothing more than a paint of light just like Doom 3. They cast no reflections whatsoever and only affect the players view. At least the lights in Doom 3 could be seen by all players.

I don't think it was so bad (then again, it didn't happen to me). The worst that's happened to me is at the end of no mercy, where we were all waiting on top of the building where the radio is. Boomer got us really bad, and at the end a hunter was on top of me. By the time the vomit cleared I see the guy right next to me, looking straight at me. Instead of shooting off the hunter, he chooses to heal himself, resulting in my death. It was okay because they all died in the end.
