I think I'm in love with this game.
I still stand by my first impressions, even though I've done a complete 180 on them as I've played more. At first glance of the 360 version it *does* look last gen. But now, lets just say that I appreciate all of what Valve managed to do in this game.
Its all the little touches that make it shine. From the character and environment detail, to the cinematic lighting, to the fact that you can see how other survivors are equipped and their health just by looking at them. Also, bullet penetration, all of the co-op mini-goals, how every weapon is useful and powerful, and the animations for survivors and infected alike. The scenery itself tells so many stories. And as you continue to play you develop team habits that work for all situations - something that most FPS games try to teach you, but are useless once you try to replay their scenarios, depending instead upon memorizing spawns and the like. This game, man.
Top. Fucking. Notch.
If I *had* to bitch about something, and I do, it'd have to be two things. The serious overdrive ramp up of difficulty for the finales (I play Advanced mostly). We've played at our very best, and really gelled as a team, and we still got royally and sadistically murderized to an unholy and demoralizing degree on the No Mercy and Dead Air finales. We don't exploit glitches, nor spend all of our time in closets, so we're still working on getting the will to achieve those two on Advanced and keeping it fun and crazy the whole time.
Last bit - we NEED more content. I'm OK with the weapon selection, but more couldn't hurt. I'd really like to see more infected types, more campaign levels of course, more encounter types and new game modes would make me grin like a ninny too.
All in all what an awesome game. I don't even know when I'll go back to Gears 2 Horde mode, and believe me that's saying a lot.
