The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Red Scarlet is awesome for helping me with the "What Are You Trying To Prove?" achievement.
She has this game down to a science - I'm truly impressed, when she was telling us the procedure for using the rock I sat there and felt like I was getting taught some basketball tips from MJ.

I guess, you know, some people have a conscience?

Uh... People like you should be banned from Steam.

Edit: Has anyone tried that anti-cheat command? That when you join a server and the admin is fucking around you can just type sv_crash in the console and it crashes the server.

I don't cheat unless the other team does it to me. I think I put the generator in front of the elevator one time to mess with people, but i and a friend moved it.

The Chef said:
Im sure this has been mentioned a thousand times already but I have to vent.

Why does everybody push that machine in front of the elevator trapping the team inside?
Its not like it even makes killing the other team easy - it just delays the game for an eternity. Whats the point? Why do people do this?
This happened to me on 3 separate occasions yesterday. I got to the point where when the elevator door opens and that machine is unsurprisingly blocking the path I apologize to my team and leave the game.

This is messed up. I cant wait for Valve to fix this.

I'm sure it's been mentioned before because this thread is damn huge... but what I do is just make sure you have at least two pipebombs when you're about to go on the elevator and just use them to knock the objects out of the way. I say two, because there are two areas where people can get you stuck. If you can't find pipe bombs, maybe if you see some other objects that you can pick up and shoot for an explosion and use them (ie; gas tank).

Besides that, I really don't think it matters... it's not that much of a hinderance and sometimes can be kinda fun to defend against it, though some times it does obviously get really damn annoying.

I don't think Valve can really do anyting about it, it's not a glitch and the infected are supposed to be able to move the objects so tanks can bitchslap them at you.

What's the word on DLC? I would seriously pay for more weapons. And I don't mean flamethrowers or rocket launchers or some such crap. I want more guns to use. Different pistols (Desert Eagle, revolvers, etc), different SMGs and so on. Although I'm not sure how any other sniper rifle can be effective in the game other than the one we already have since it's already one-shot-one-kill and semi-automatic with a decent size clip.

Valve said with TF2 the free update strategy, trial weeekends was succesful for them and they intend to follow suit with Left4Dead.

Not sure they'll change the weapons up, I was hoping for more classes of infected, but it'd probably break the game.

I was so excited for this game pre-release and played the demo to death but I've barely touched it since it came out.

It's such a pain to actually get the right number of people together. If I just jump online randomly there will probably be 2-3 servers with friends on them playing but they'll be full and nobody will leave till the end of the game, at which point it completely empties and they all quit. Pubbing is also probably the worst of any online game I've played, I've never once had an enjoyable game with people I didn't know.

Then if you somehow get everything set up perfectly it's likely you'll get some weird lobby glitch that kicks everyone or you'll join a server with terrible latency.

I mean I still haven't had a chance to play through anything other than No Mercy or Blood Harvest. I guess working a full time job has something to do with it, but with what little time I've had to try and play I always end up doing something else due to not being able to get a friend game. Then once every two weeks or so when I can get 3 people to play with me it's just Versus since they've all long since played campaign to death.

I dunno, I really really really want to play and love Left 4 Dead but right now it's high on my list of disappointments for the year. In fact this year sucked in general for games.
Yup but when you finally get enough people playing, it's really really good.

Great games tonight everyone (even twig the punching bag).

Speaking of which, I want an infected class that can spawn 'fake' items that constantly spawns zombies, items which explode upon use.

Honestly, joining a game with random people isn't all that bad. Occasionally, you'll end up with the fuckwad group, but for the most part it's fine.

Sorry it ain't working out. Pubbing for me has been pretty awesome so far... tons more good games than bad.

I don't see how it's so hard to start a game... just start up a private game, get your friends in the game. Change the permission setting to public and people flood in within a minute usually. Unless you're talking about something else, I dunno. Thats how do it.

I just tried it a second ago on PC and it worked fine, and I know for sure it works on 360.

I don't know if anyone else has this problem, or if there's even any solution, but my game loads really slow in between matches and scenes or whatever even though my internet connection is great and I have full bars in game.

From this a few problems arise:
1.) Everyone always gets pissed waiting for me when I'm doing versus.
2.) I can't get any achievements that require a person to do something a whole campaign since I load so slow.

Pretty sure that's a problem with your computer. Do you meet the minimum requirements?

I destroy the minimum requirements, I'm running on full with no lag. I guess I could try turning down some of the settings...

Maybe you need to defrag L4D.

If that doesn't help, try turning down the texture setting.

I used to have mine on high, which ran pretty good but loaded like molasses. Now I have it on Medium and I load as fast as everybody else.

shut up!

Don't let Valve know you are willing to pay for DLC! Once they get wind of this they will want back-pay for all the TF2 updates on PC!

Is that a bug? A friend of mine has the same problem and got a monster pc. He tried changing drivers etc with no luck. I'll tell him to try your solution, thank you.

I don't think it's a bug. Higher resolution textures take longer to load, not much you can besides adjust your settings or upgrade the graphics card I guess.

Epic ownage just then. Particularly the final stage, where I somehow managed to fall off the cliff right at the beginning next to the safe house, after being nudged by a hunter. :lol

I love playing with her and Pop, they know all the games exploits, glitches, spawn points and best strategies. You learn so much.

So I've survived Blood Harvest campaign at least twice now, and I still haven't gotten the achievement. I even completed it on expert last night..and nothing. :(

How?

I'm a L4D newb on the xbox, my god, the last level of the first campaign where you wait for the helicopter... if you get a silent team that level is impossible. played it 5 times in a row last night and the best guy on the team (or the most experienced) just had this hiding place around the back of the radio room on a ledge.

fucker wouldn't help anyone, he goes there, stands there and just shoots anything milling around the bottom of the building and waits for the whole team to die. Then we sit there waiting for him to pick off zombies 1 by 1. until eventually a tank and a smoker drag him down everytime. Talk about shitty teamwork.

I need strategy baaaad. Find it very difficult to plan anything with strangers because everyone runs everywhere and that last bit needs teamwork.

Love the game though, everything is so immediate.

What's the deal with the witch? Can you just walk around her as long as nobody shoots her?

That level is retardedly easy on Advanced or lower, and I posted about how it needs to be reworked a few pages back. Just have all four guys sit in the four corners of the room under the turret. Generally, people will go to these spots silently anyway. Run out and fight the Tank in the open when he spawns. Run back in the room and get in your corner. Repeat until end. I've done this a handful of times without getting hit at all the entire time. Hunters, Boomers, and Smokers just can't easily get to anyone without someone else immediately seeing it and doing something about it.

Man, I can't wait for the content patches for this game. I'm still having fun with the Versus level and the game shines when teamwork is used. I get this shit eating grin when my team pounces two survivors at the same time while a Boomer drops down and hurls on everyone.

I posted it in the L4D Group Thread but anyone who wants a friend to play some Versus.

yeah, I think my team was a pack of jerks, maybe do better next time, the only guy with any skill at all was hiding in his can't get me spot, other 2 people were retarded and on my last go I got pinned by a hunter almost immediately. always disappointing to watch him scratch your entire health to zero from full :/

The hunters are just plain hard to see and the can JUMP.

I take it the only special zombies are

tank
hunter
smoker
boomer

?

would be funky to have a mode where one player is the AI director and gets AP to spend on events like hordes and shyte.

For Hunters, if you see them in front of you before they jump, just start meleeing over and over. Melee stops their jump and stuns them for a few seconds, and you can kill them off. Otherwise you're going to get caught and just have to hope your teammates are competent enough to help you.

so i got thrown into an advanced versus server w/ green tank (that spawned super fast). each match lasted about a minute, but we stuck with it for a really long time. one player on the other team started to complain, and the person who ran the server began to chat back... it was very weird.

it would be really nice to get a versus server w/ no tank for either team.

I am just plain terrible with the tank. I charge into a room with all 4 survivors and get stopped in my tracks immediately. Dead within seconds. :/

Am i doing it wrong?

Avoid the molotovs and pick one guy and let your buddies take care of the other three.

If you see all 4 survivors waiting for your ass, don't go in the room!

Have one of the other zombies start some shit by either puking on them or diving on them or something. Tanks can be effective on their own if the survivors are spread out a bit, but if they are all packed together, you need some distractions set up so you can wreak your havoc.

Communicate with your teammates and tell them to start shit before you go ape.

And use the environment to your advantage. No Mercy has forklifts, cars and dumpsters and Blood Harvest has logs. Use them to instantly incapacitate the survivors making.

Is there a consensus on what campaign is easiest to beat on Expert? A buddy and I tried No Mercy on Expert last night and we cleared the first two acts first-try, but couldn't get passed the third. Any suggestions?

Yeah ive been doing it wrong.

So can you pick up stuff and hold it? Or does he kinda hit it in the direction your facing? I seriously need more practice as the tank.

Punch a car and it'll go flying. This works best in the very first level of No Mercy when they're in the first alleyway. I've killed all four in one car hit many times. (Though it's awkward that set pieces like the police car, vans, and such can't be hit.)

If the Survivors have the tier 2 weapons, you absolutely can't charge in or you're dead in about 3 seconds of auto-shotgun blasts. You have wait it out and let your teammates split them up first, or just forfeit your turn as the tank and let the Control meter go down. It's better to have it go to another teammate than to waste your Tank completely.

I didn't know if the meter ran out it goes to someone else. Thats really good to know.

Also, don't be afraid to "snipe" as the tank. Take your time and chuck rocks at them (if they're far, triangulate their position).

If you're between the survivors and their destination, you're in good shape. Just be patient without losing control.

What's the best way to kill a tank on advanced and expert in a 4 player campaign mode? Our group does well until one of those comes in and it's a killer on finales. Should all of us use shotguns? Aim for the head? Have one be the decoy? help!

They're fairly standard across the first four levels; all my group of friends found different from campaign to campaign was how long the finale took us. Judging by that alone, Dead Air was by far the easiest, Blood Harvest the hardest.

If everyone's health is green, throw a Molotov at the tank and run like hell until he burns to death. If someone's health is low and they can't run, let them be the decoy while the rest of you spray and pray.

you can only do it once, though. If the second player loses his turn, the A.I fully takes over the tank and it's gonna suck. And yeah, Tanking is hard once the survivors have their hands on tier 2 weapons. You can't just rush in and start punching every like you do if they've only got tier 1 weapons, you're gonna have to rely on your entire team to help you separate the survivors so you have the chance to incapacitate one of 'em.

I would actually say the opposite is true. In Dead Air, you don't really have any good places to hide, and the damn tank can pop out of anywhere in that debris. In Blood Harvest, you got that whole house with a bunch of tiny rooms to barricade yourself into, and the tank can easily be kited around the house in a circle.

I agree.

You can easily see and control infected in every finale except Blood Harvest. On No Mercy you have plenty of hiding spots (The ledge behind the safe room, the few doors that you can blast in and hide in) that will give you space between you and infected, on Death Toll you have the rock glitch, and on Dead Air you have the dirt lot behind on the airplane.

On Blood Harvest though, you have closets without very much room to see out. It is fine during the horde waves, but during the tank waves it's a mess. Special infected during the tank waves can screw you too.

Blood Harvest also seems to be a bitch about giving you molotovs or pipe bombs for the finale.
