The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

I experienced a Christmas miracle today.

I met three randoms in a versus lobby, and they turned out to be very good communicators. They were very good at the game too. We proceed to then destroy a team in the first two levels of Blood Harvest, and they ragequit after being wiped in the alarm room in the warehouse. I invite a few people, Blizzard among them.

We make it in 3, and I was sorta accused of hacking or exploiting or something, on account of the fact that I absolutely nailed a few boomers and hunters/smokers through walls (The reason why, of course, is that I caught sight of them when they clipped through thin walls or saw them through cracks).

We wipe the enemy team in 4, while we all make it on the same level (Skipping the barn and the factory is crucial, you don't need to go in there, and you'll save a lot of time and damage by avoiding those buildings).

Autobalance steals one of our guys in the finale, but we soldier on. Our smoker kills one of their men after three of them jumped down into the cornfield. The remaining three take damage in the field and set up shop in the farmhouse's kitchen. Our first

When our turn came, we went with the kitchen. Using my superhearing or some shit I shot a few boomers through walls as they ran into the living room, ready to burst into the kitchen. We held off the Tanks well, and regrouped at the front door. As the truck came out, we were pounced and grabbed by the smoker, but we fought them all off. All four of us got onto the truck alive.

This. Not to mention it's completely unsportsmanlike, seeing as Tanks get stuck under there and the survivors can literally suffer no damage there.

The closets, while unbalanced at least give the Infected a chance.

I didn't say you hacked, I was just wondering how since I was speccing through your viewpoint. :P Also, even with headphones I can never pinpoint where boomers are, but I guess some people with really good sound systems can.

I also learned today that the klaxon thing in the middle of blood harvest also has a closet everyone can just hide in, upstairs.

I forget who said "hack", but I remember somebody saying it. Maybe it was me :lol

All you really need to get good at pinpointing is a lot of volume. I'm not using sophisticated headphones at all, but blasting sound into my ears is usually enough to pick up on the little differences (the location and proximity of a boomer, for example).

I also learned today that the klaxon thing in the middle of blood harvest also has a closet everyone can just hide in, upstairs.
I've known about it for a while, first time I've actually used it though. Valve should really add breakaway walls to all the closets in Versus, seeing as they aren't used for reviving.

fun game with gaffers earlier. yeah, they really do need to fix the finale in BH. While I still think the levels leading to the finale are way better in Blood Harvest, the finale is absolute balls compared to the No Mercy one. You've got two good turtling spots with plenty of ammo in BH. :|

Except we still died. :lol I was so dumb forgetting which way to run to the vehicle...

Sorry I had to bail, hope it was a good game anyway. I'll be a bit more reliable once the Christmas festivities die down. ;p

I had to bail that game during the 3rd level so I wasn't around to see how things turned out. Heard you guys only won by 100 points, though. The second match we played was a little more decisive, but you weren't there.

Left 4 Dead PC is MINE!

Later tonight, i'll be ready for some zombie GAF max difficulty co-op. Of course starting from the beginning and getting back used to the gameplay.

Got a headset too.

The first game was definitely fun. Definitely satisfying to wipe the survivors as they run away from for the rescue truck. Sorry again to my awesome team for the disconnects and having the girlfriend calling me in the middle of the game.

The second game was a mess. We tried rushing through and it just didn't work. Me being tank in the finale with you shooting me constantly in the back with your autoshotty was definitely the cherry on top of my embarrassment sundae.

Will play again for sure. Versus is only fun with fellow Gaffers.

Why did the "Lef 4 Dead" thread starter get banned? I mean, I know there are more articulated, coherent and less hyperbolic ways to express opinion, but it seems mighty harsh.

Ah well, the game is awesome.

People have been banned for much less. That thread was the most obvious troll ever.

Because Left 4 Dead doesnt have N64 graphics.

Sneak up from behind, wait for her head to rise up until it's practically kissing the barrel of your shotgun, then pow! CR0WND achievement unlocked and a palpable feeling of badassery.

Game definitely needs some more variety to it. Dunno how much longer it will be able to keep my interest, and I just got it yesterday.
But it's pretty damn fun. Had no idea the fucking thing was only 2 on one 360 but luckily I have 2 TVs and my friend got a copy and brought over his 360. An Xmas of local 4 player shooting the fuck out of shit.
Good times.

I got this game on PC today and love it.

Though, I'm running into a problem where about half the time on the loading screen it freezes up right as the loading bar finishes. Not sure what that is about.

Also, any mods or downloads I need to have?

Take the auto shotgun, then get close enough to her with your light off. Shoot her one to startle her, then run backwards shooting very fast and you'll kill her before she touches you.

Wouldn't getting Cr0wned also get you the take no damage from the witch?

I guess it would. I got cr0wned second which is why I didn't think about it. This game has great word of mouth, at least 3 people on my friends list bought the game because everyone else was playing it.

haven't had a chance to play online yet, but I did play two games with my sis (who hardly ever plays video games and she got the hang of it/got into it pretty quick) on normal which were both super fun

first on no mercy she was the only one to make it to the chopper
then on blood harvest I was the only one to make it to the escape vehicle

clearly we were never good at working on a team together

Hahaha, I laughed so hard when I realized that I was actually CHASING the Tank during the finale. Probably the first time that has ever happened. And yeah, all GAF games are definitely fun. It's a shame that they don't happen that often in versus mode.

They do though, you're just never there!

Pillow shit... lol

your a martyr for putting up with that guy.
I'm still alive, really though I don't know how you guys can not say something.

Ah, well I mostly play with TF2 gaf. Thing is you're always playing when we play so I never invite. You should come sometime, we often have awesomely close games.

I would actually say the opposite is true. In Dead Air, you don't really have any good places to hide, and the damn tank can pop out of anywhere in that debris. In Blood Harvest, you got that whole house with a bunch of tiny rooms to barricade yourself into, and the tank can easily be kited around the house in a circle.

The fence by the plane you fuel up is probably the single easiest place to defend in any finale. Wide open, and almost impossible to get swarmed. Blood Harvest is hard because you rarely get any molotovs so you have to save up. Even if you did that, you might have to deal with a tank or a witch, so if 3 people have a molotov, you can't miss or life might get difficult. Not to mention special infected can make life difficult. Oh, and setting off the stupid crows is always a pain.

I'd say overall finale difficulty is Dead Air<No Mercy<Death Toll<Blood Harvest... if you don't abuse the rock on Death Toll. No Mercy and Death Toll tend to give excessive amounts of molotovs and pipebombs. Death Toll also tends to give excessive amounts of first aid kits, but there's usually a witch or a tank (or both) whereas No Mercy very rarely has either. Plus there's those stupid cliffs that zombies fall off of and there's really no convenient corner to hide in. And for whatever reason, ditching out of the finale house on Death Toll seems to be way more problematic than on Blood Harvest. Also, the tank can put the fire out by dipping into the water, so you have to be careful about that.

As far as overall campaign difficulties go.... I would say No Mercy<Dead Air<Blood Harvest<Death Toll. No Mercy is by far the easiest. Dead Air has some rough patches, but still not too bad. Blood Harvest and Death Toll are both largely outside so you have to stick close. Death Toll 4 in the town can get downright ugly... there is almost always a tank, and there are cars everywhere. Plus the director tends to be really stingy with supplies. And I'd say the average level on Death Toll is harder than Blood Harvest.

The hardest non-finales are probably Death Toll 4 (the town), Blood Harvest 3 (the bridge), Dead Air 3 (the construction sight). Out of those I'd say it goes Dead Air 3<Blood Harvest 3<Death Toll 4 in difficulty.

Yes, I was referring to the fence when I said Dead Air was the easiest, and I agree with most of the above post except for maybe the non-finale choices (I still think No Mercy 3 is one of the hardest).

Does anyone have good tips/tricks for the Blood Harvest finale on Expert? My friends and I have beaten No Mercy, Death Toll and Dead Air on Expert, but using their respective exploits for the Finale (Jesus Room, Rock and On top of the Airplane, respectively).

Anything similar for Blood Harvest?

Get to the second floor of the barn, and just turtle by the pile of ammo with four auto shotties. Once the tank arrives, just scatter and shoot the crap out of him while he chases someone. The actual finale of Blood harvest is the easiest out of the 4, even without using exploits so you shouldn't have that much of a problem.

Uhhh, me and a bunch of friends just started playing Expert and the difficulty is just brutal. At first we had problems with tanks but we've figured that out (molotov its ass and run our asses off as far as we can). We just have difficulty staying alive throughout the various scenarios the game throws at you. I think it's our movement. Do you guys move with one or two guys crouched in front (to prevent friendly fire)? Or are there better formations to move around with?

The best strategy for the tank is to molotov it, then shove your ass in a corner with four players having an autoshotty and it'll die in literal seconds as you unload your guns into it.

Before lvl 2 weapons, you can still take it down extremely fast with the regular shotgun if you put semi-decent distance between you two as you unload.

As to expert, yeah friendly fire is the big killer so wherever possible, we have two crouched (and they can melee + shoot) and have the back group NOT use shotguns as the spread is so large and few can control it well.

Well, you've said it yourself. Shotguns are held by two players max because of the danger of friendly fire so we can't all be carrying shotguns when the tanks come.

What kind of loadouts are the best for Expert?

Just try to tell your team to avoid moving around when a rush is coming or when you're clearing out a location with a lot of infected. When you hear the music signal, just find the nearest corner and start shooting the shit out of every zombie that comes in your direction. Just wait till all the gunfire has stopped before you start moving forward.

And yeah, amir0x is right. All you have to do against a tank really is to find a really small close, get your asses in it, and wait for him to come stomping in and unload everything you have on him. If you guys don't panic, and time your initial shots right, he should die way before taking anyone out.

edit: 4 autoshotties are perfectly fine, you've just got to be aware of what's happening around you. If you want to take extra. Having 3 shotguns and 1 hunting rifle works, too. Really, the Assault rifle is near useless. It does piss-poor damage, it runs out of ammo fairly quickly, and it sucks against rushes.

Well if two have autoshottys and two the regular lvl 2 machine gun or hunting rifle, the tank will still go down in seconds - just 4 seconds instead of 3.

edit: I've never played with a team in which all four people could appropriately keep from hitting the teammates in front of them with autoshotties, particularly since on expert one or two autoshots in the back will kill you. It's too much of a risk I find unless you play with all God players, which is rare even when playing with friends.

I hope a FLAMETHROWER is the next downloadable weapon
It would require some teamwork to use effectively, you'd want to let the person with the best judgment to use the flamethrower, so they don't accidently torch the team when being swarmed.
And it'd give propane tanks another use.

I'm starting to feel that now after sinking around 100 hours the past month.

Versus is a whole other can of beans though, I can't stop laughing after successfully barfing, smoking, pouncing and incapping survivors :D

Versus is getting tedious too, they REALLY need to add the other two campaigns and add the new campaign they were talking about.

And yeah, flamethrower should probably be the next downloadable weapon... isn't that what Valve said already?

Flamethrowers are going to be a pain when it comes to friendly fire. People have enough problems timing their molotovs as it is already. I can't imagine what it'll be like with pub players.

Are there actually people who can reach the expert finales without dying once throughout the four stages before the finale? Is that even possible?

A flamethrower could work if you attach some negatives to it, such as slow movement speed or slower "look" speed. Basically the message would be "This isn't a weapon you can run into a room alone with and kill everything without trying, and if you kill your teammates, you're screwed"
