The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

I've gotten Wipefest twice. The first time we had 3 Hunters and a Smoker then co-ordinated to get em all at once. The other I was a tank and incapped 3 at once with a car.

I've played lots of versus and have only ever seen a Tank outside of the finale three times, however in campaign I usually see 2-3 before the finale.

Very first time playing it, there was a tank about 20 feet from the spawn area, where those 2 gas cans are in a little nook.

Played with duckroll and bebpo earlier, that was fun, although I let a witch get me because I messed up. :( Played pretty bad that game but it was neat playing w/ them.

In the 2 versus games we played yesterday, we only got a tank in the finale.
I can only speak for one side tho, since my team didn't even make it halfway through the maps as survivors (we were up against the mega-badasses of our regular group, all in one team :D)

I have played a ton of VS in CC and I have never gotten a tank before the finale which is kind of irritating. The director wouldn't even give me one when it was just me against four people as survivors which is bullshit because I am totally gimped without help.

Played through Crash Course on Expert last night (PC) it was tough but when everyone is really into it and trying its a great experience, played it for nearly 3 hours before we finally made it to the finale lol, Good stuff.

i think i got tank twice in map 1. both near the parking lot (when you drop down). really tough, and a good spot for a tank.

hopefully we can get the cevo config working right and force tank on both maps.

Tanks seem to be pretty rare in Crash Course Versus except for the finale. I've played the map about a dozen times so far and have seen a tank during the normal parts maybe once.

Anyone down for a game right now?

I cannot for the life of me EVER find a game on Expert these days. I have to create a lobby and wait a good 5 minutes to find 3 more people who want to play. :\

I usually wind up playing an expert game every other day or so with friends, just add some of us if you don't mind non-random people.

I was thinking about doing this as well. I will have to check it out.

Downloaded Crash Course for the 360 and gave it a shot with a co-op partner last night in standard campaign mode. Was shockingly disappointed in the experience.

A 'normal' run will take about 30 minutes without rushing, easily taking 20%-50% longer on higher difficulties (sweet spot for me is Advanced). The level design is a more open urban environment, with multiple routes through warehouses and alleys and features a lot more vertical gameplay (friggin' skylights are the bane of my existence) as well as a lot tougher holdouts versus hordes when they come. But in terms of look and feel its made up of all the same assets from previous campaigns - nothing stands out on the visuals front.

The problems, and there were plenty, came from hit detection and glitches. Shooting into zombies where the shots just don't seem to register at all, throwing a pipe bomb only to have it bounce off of an invisible wall six inches in front of my face and disappear to... somewhere. I got 28 separate instances of friendly fire, and I am one cautious dude when it comes to FF. Crash Course is the only campaign where I've experienced these kinds of lag effects and slowdown.

To top it all off, once we survived the end encounter our achievements were all messed up. All of our achievements for surviving other campaigns were listed as locked in game, and none of the achievements we DID do even registered. Both of us repeatedly stunned the tanks with explosives, but alas, no achievement - and there are others. I guess the official forums are filled with similar tales, and there's word of a patch coming out, but still its damn surprising to see Valve release content in this state, and at a premium price no less.

This write-up is more for people sitting on the fence and wondering whether Crash Course is worth 560 points. To those folks I'd advise at least waiting for a patch, and maybe holding off for a discount first unless the versus mode is the real draw.

I'm a member of the L4D GAF group on Steam. :)

... I'm also quite noob compared to most of you, probably. -_-

yeah i wouldnt disagree with that. i bought it at full price and im living with the issues though. i had a lot of fun with it this weekend.

i didnt experience most of those lag issues you mentioned above. the only real problems ive been having are disconnections and achievemetns being totally broken.

ive gotten slick pull several times, won several vs matches and neither registered.

i also have not seen one tank outside of the finale in vs in about 6 or so matches, which sucks.

Not only is that the point, but it takes 1-2 hours to play a single versus round. That's your definition of short? :/

1-2 hours? what the crap are you playing

i like the overall map length, but not a fan of the individual round length. especially since people constantly rage before i get a chance to play infected in part 2.

Yeah, in Campaign you can get 2 tanks in the first level, but definitely always at least 1. I also had a game where the tank spawned pretty much in sight of our spawn.

I said, versus mode. If you play versus mode with decent people, teams make it most of the way through both maps, and it takes a long time. I think Nabs said earlier that it's quite draining to play, and the infected team sometimes gets confused which way is which until they learn the map.

i know you said VS mode, and my statement still stands. i play 4v4 with friends and it doesnt take 2 hours. maaaybe if they reach the end every time.

I said 1-2 hours. :) I think I have played at least two games out of my 3-4 crash course versus playthroughs that reached over 1 hour, but I will leave it up to other people to say whether that's true in general.

*edit* Red Scarlet's statement makes it sound like the actual time should be 0.75-1.0 hours then.

So I'm in Japan but would like to play with GAFers sometime. How is the lag from the US to Japan? Could there even be some jGAFers playing L4D?

Mmm, depends on how bad lag is to you. I used to play with Pop On Arrival daily, and he's in Asia. He was getting 250-350 I think usually and was excellent at the game. Marvelharvey is in Japan and he gets a lower ping, and was in a group that we got Nothing Special. Duckroll plays too, and I think he gets 200 or less..so it is playable, but I don't think you'd get lower than 150-200. I can't really play vs with that kind of ping, but campaign seems a lot more doable with that range.

Maybe those guys will see your q and reply, probably not Pop though. He just plays SF4 all the time now. :(

Has anyone played the Night Terror custom map? It's so ridiculous--it references films like 28 Days Later, a haunted house, a mayan temple, Evil Dead and Lord of the Rings (yes, the Mines of Moira to be specific)--and actually is kind of hard with the number of special infected that are spawned. It's kind of fun and worth playing through once. It's only 85% complete and it's a hell of a lot better than Crash Course, it's almost too long and too ridiculous though.

I haven't played Left 4 Dead regularly like I did when it first launched (over a hundred hours when I last checked). Most of my friends stopped a few months back and that doesn't really help. The Survival update got everyone playing for a bit, but not for long. A few custom maps and Crash Course have had a similar effect but the game just doesn't look like it's the long term time sink like TF2 has been.

It's disappointing that there's still weird, shitty issues plaguing the regular versus campaigns in Left 4 Dead. Take the Death Toll finale as an example, when survivors go into the water to fight the Tank, Hunters become useless. Survivors can move around just fine but hunters can't pounce. Once you hit the water, you're boned. It's such a prevalent survivor strategy and glaring over-sight.

Hunter pounce targeting still sucks, you'll still pounce a smoker'd survivor instead of hitting the survivor who is going for the rescue that you want to hit, that you're trying to target. You should have some sort of ability to focus on the survivor you're trying to pounce since aiming your retcile at the intended target somehow isn't enough.

Thanks a lot! I get about 150-200 just searching for a game normally, so 250-350 would be ok. When it gets higher than that it gets kind of unplayable though. It would be cool to play with jGAF, and since L4D uses dedicated servers I could join some US peeps without causing them to lag as well.

I've played through the Haunted Mansion map on Night Terror and I really enjoyed it since the Haunted Mansion was always my favorite ride at Disney World. Haven't gotten a chance to play the other maps yet though.

It is funny though. But you can get them from the house roof also.

Night Terror is pretty fun. Especially since they fixed the 'game over' bug on level 2 or 3.

I was trying to join games and it kept just making lobbies for me so I gave up for the day.

Finally fired this up on the 360 last.

Pretty cool game. Damn, those are the fastest zombies I've ever seen.

But it is weird . . . it seems you can easily play through the whole game co-op in less than a day. And you know of all the enemy types right up front. Really no story build up in this game . . . it is kinda like a sports game . . . no progression, just here are the rules . . . now play.

Basically, it is more like Team Fortress than Half-Life 2.

They killed the whole story thing because it's meant to be played online repeatedly. And after a couple times, people were annoyed by the cut scenes. So they ditched them.

Damn they really dropped the ball with Crash Course. So many damn glitches, pipe bombs and ammo every few feet and I have yet to see a tank spawn in versus mode in Chapter 1 versus.

Thank god L4D2 comes out next month. I love L4D but I'm so ready for new and worthwhile content.

VS mode is the real meat of the game.

edit: Fall Newegg Wanfest is coming up with L4D PC as one of the tournaments

One of my reasons for loving L4D so much is the lack of story. It's just "Here's a gun and here are some zombies" with some amusing dialogue sprinkled in along the way.

Yeah, add me, I'm playing L4D most evenings and I've a couple of L4D-loving new staff joining me next month, so getting 4 together isn't too much of an issue. Although I'm in LA until Friday though, so no games just yet!

Steam name: marvelharvey or possibly marvelharvey [jp], I forget which.
