Any advice on a quality video card in the $100 USD range? What settings will I be able to run L4D on with said card?

I'm a total PC-spec retard, although I want to start educating myself.

Any advice?

I can play, but I'm not good. I seemed okay with the sniper rifle, though.

Tekno: for most :lol , try to get HotD2 'thank you for rescuing me' when you revive a person in part 2.

:lol two people barfed on right away. Poor Tekno.

I know. Mila and I just had a run of bad luck. Thats the first time thats ever happened to me. Not to mention a hunter as well.

If there is still room when I get back from walking my dog, i'll join.

My conclusion so far is that the game is fun (I haven't tried the sniper rifle yet), but the servers are awful in terms of connection. At the very end of my last game, at the minigun place, I repeatedly got the "reconnecting" screen over and over like every four seconds...the rest of the internet seems fine, so I don't know if it's my fault or what. :(

Does the witch get startled by your flashlight or only when you shoot her?

Both... I was a few feet away from her once and pulled out a Molotov to throw at her and she charged me before I even tossed it. :lol

I love the description for the demo on marketplace. Every other demo has the usual game info detailing the number of players, genre, etc. This game just has two lines:

"This game rocks! Buy it!"

Wtf? :lol
Well, yeah.

L4D

That's what I kept saying. :( It took forever to find servers, it would get unplayably laggy (I think Scarlet left our game because of it), and it would fail or give wrong messages when you tried to join rooms. I wondered if it was a combination of heavy server load with the new update.

Well first, what are your CPU, current GPU, and ram?

If they're all pretty good, then for $110 grab a 9800 GT for sure: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150316

It'll not only max out Left 4 Dead at 1680x1050 and 60+ FPS, but you'll be able to play Crysis on High details with it pretty smoothly as well.

That is, of course, if the rest of your PC holds up too.

The 28 weeks later music during the set up for the finale was a really nice touch.

I tried to get it to fit for the witch part when she ran out on fire...but that didnt work.

Either way, i'd just back on with everyone, but its later than I thought it was.

EDIT: Everyone remember to click high quality.

EDIT: Ah... they don't ship to Australia. Damn. Any Australian know a good, trustworthy place to buy from?

umart.net.au is the best computer store in Australia. For pure cheapness MSY is where to go, but the service is considerably worse.

I'm adding a bunch of doods from here on my flist in the hopes that someone would play with my laggy ass. I at least wanna play with fellow gaffers than with people who don't even speak english. :[

Thanks man.

The demo is great, and the game is great. But I hope the different campaigns all have different gameplay. For instance, one campaign could have slower zombies, one campaign could involve some kind of vehicles, and so on. Otherwise, I can see a lot of people getting tired of the game quickly.

If I'm joining a server that has 1 or 2 people, is there anyway to switch characters before playing? It always seems to default to Francis and he's my least favourite character.

Select "choose character".

Thanks! I'm having a lot of fun with these CVARs. So far:
director_no_survivor_bots - put this in the command prompt before loading the single player game to play solo
bind <key> z_add - hit <key> many times followed by...
nb_rush - zombies rush at you promptly

MNC117! MNC117!

Add meeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I am also up for games of TF2 once in a while, but yeah, L4D and all :3

Source recorder isn't what it used to be... I've been through all codecs, and Microsoft Video 1 seems to be the best, compiles reasonably fast with decent enough filesize, though I multitask alot so the video gets messed up once in a while... Should I just let it run or was it the codec that desynched some stuff?

For offline LAN, setup a dedicated server (under tools menu) and set it to LAN. Open up the console in the main menu, type in openserverbrowser and the server will appear under the LAN tab.

I wanna upgrade memory and graphics card to:

Well your motherboard only supports memory running at DDR2 400/533/667 so you won't see any benefit in speed but the extra 2GB is certainly useful. Just be aware you might need to update your bios to add support for 4GB.

You should have no problem with the video card, assuming your power supply has a 6-pin pci-e power cable.

Ooh. I'm downloading the demo right now.

The last fps I really played was Counter Strike. I was alright! I just hope my computer doesn't lag down on me.
If I can play the other Source games on low settings will I be alright with this one?

This is me (new to Steam): http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198000581691/

Add meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

edit: nevermind, you're downloading the demo. You're about to find out for yourself pretty soon anyway.

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive but good headset for the PC? Going to start playing this with some friends and I want to be prepared.

I really like the Turtle Beach Earforce X1. It's $60 and works for both the 360 and the PC. It allows you to get both game music and voice chat through the same headphone and works great.

Wow, this thread is 80 pages long and the game isn't even out yet. This must be a record. I want to play expert more often but I don't want to play it with random people. It usually spells disaster.

Just a note to all the old PC players:

I have

Athlon 64 3500 Single CPU @ 2.2ghz
1GB DDR 400
ATI X1600Pro 256MB
Slow, nasty IDE hard drive

I am running at 16x10 with low/medium details and no AA/AF and getting awesomely playable framerates. True, it's not beautiful, but the fun is def still there if you don't have any other options.

Ah good to hear, my PC is around those specs.

I bumped my res all the way down to 10x7 with everything except model detail (high) set to medium because i didn't want to risk it but if it can go up I will bump it up.

My stuff:

Core 2 Duo 4800 @ 1.8GHz (fuck overclocking)
1GB DDR400
ATI x700pro 256mb (AGP :lol )
160GB SATA-1
