Shouldn't people just join the Left4Dead GAF group, instead of adding everybody as friends? :D

I've clicked on that link that's in the OP of the Steam/Left4Dead online forum. And for some reason it doesn't add to my groups. Is that how you guys are doing it?

And the bigger problem I have is this: When I try hitting join a game from the general Neogaf group, 90 percent of the time I get the "missing 3rd-party app" error. Anyone know what Steam is talking about?

4850 on very high starts to give sub-30 fps though.

Either way, 4850 is an amazing card for the money :D

What I meant was a mix of high settings and very high settings. All very high is a bit too much for the card.

Just had an awesome end to a 2 player Expert run with SonnyBoy and myself:

We get to the end and the Director spawns a Witch right inside the minigun room. Everyone's low on health, so SonnyBoy decides to take her out before we set up for the final holdoff. He grabs one of the gas cans and sneaks up to the Witch.. as.. slow.. as.. possible. It was hilarious. He's trying to get into position and she turns, looks into his soul and starts growling at him. Eventually he drops the can into position and we open up on it and her. However, he underestimates the spread of the fire and takes out himself and Zoey as a result. Eventually, Louis and myself finish off the now ablaze Witch. :lol

I wait for the crew to respawn and we setup for the fight with only one remaining gas can, no molotovs and no pipebombs. I drop the gas can between the minigun and the exit/door button and SonnyBoy hits the button while I head back to man the minigun. He takes posittion on one of the generators and I open up with the minigun, cutting down the swarm coming through the 2nd floor window and whoever makes it past the fire wall on the right.

The crew starts falling one by one. Louis goes first (they really hate him for some reason), then Zoey and SonnyBoy's position gets overwhelmed. Amidst the chaos, a Hunter jumps on him and I manage to shoot him off with some well placed minigun blasts. He jumps back up and we take on the waves until I start to get hit from behind by zombies crawling up through the floor. So I abandon the position, 180 spin smack a bunch of them off me and jump over the sandbags and open fire on them.

Out the corner of my eye I see SonnyBoy's down and the zombies, smelling blood, are all over him. Even the ones coming up throught the floor are seemingly oblivious to me and are running straight for him. He's down and shooting them with the dual pistols, I'm shooting them with the assault rifle.. bodies are dropping left and right. I'm talking 15-20+ zombies and a Boomer, all on him at once. :O

We overcome them and somehow he survives, so I climb up on the generator to help him up. All of a sudden a Smoker pops through the door and lashes me right before I start the animation. I fruitlessly start firing at him but he drags me towards him anyway. I accept my fate and we're screwed. But wait, somehow from his downed position (still on the generator no less) SonnyBoy lets off round after round, toward the Smoker. Bullets are zipping past my head as I'm being dragged and he takes out the Smoker before he delivers what would've been the final blow to end both our lives and the mission.

After we recover from the, "Holy shit! Did that just happen?!" feeling, I climb back up the generator, lift him up and we hoof it up the stairs and I toss him some pills rather than tempt fate. We zip into the safe room and slam the door behind us.

Is there a way to check fps because I think I am running way over 30 fps with all settings at high.

Is there a theater mode on this, so you can replay back your last game, ala Halo3??

record test (starts recording, saves the movie as a file called "test.dem"
stop (stops recording)

Then you'll need a program that can edit .dem files. Never used one so I can't vouch for any, but several exist.

If you're upgrading your PC in anticipation of Left 4 Dead don't go overboard in the graphics card department. The Source engine is more CPU than GPU dependant so spend that money wisely.

Using tomshardare.com's GPU comparison charts you can see the difference between the cards using Half Life 2 Episode 2 as the benchmark. The cheapest 4850 currently on newegg.com is $130 after mail in rebate.

9600GT's can be found online for around $60 after mail in rebate. If you're playing at 1280x1024 maxed out the difference between a 9600GT and a 4850 is only 7.78% or 8.5 FPS.

Half Life 2 Episode 2
TH-Timedemo
(1280x1024, 4xAA, 8xAF, Very High Quality)
Score in Frames: ATI Radeon HD 4850: 105.20 NVIDIA Geforce 9600 GT: 97.60

9800GT's can be found online for slightly less $100 after mail in rebate. For playing at 1680x1050 the difference between a 4850 and 9800GT is only 7.83% or 7.2 FPS.

(1680x1050, 4xAA, 8xAF, Very High Quality)
Score in Frames: ATI Radeon HD 4850: 99.10 NVIDIA Geforce 9800 GT: 91.90

At 1920x1200 Nvidia doesn't offer anything for the same price that competes with the 4850. The 9800GT is 17.5% or 13.2 FPS slower than the 4850 at this resolution.

After looking at that PDF, it seems that there is indeed no way to limit max fps, sadly.

On the other hand, there are cvars to spawn a jeep or airboat in front of you? o-O

Odds are he got vomitted on.
Although it might be difficult to tell when you're in a tight group, the zombies that rush in after someone gets "hit" by the boomer will pretty much only go for the one who was vomitted on, the same way they will run right past you if you throw a pipe bomb. It's important to know because you can take a few steps back and get rid of most of the zombies easily, rather than try to defend him by staying in the center of the swarm with him.

Not sure if you were just writing that way for "storytelling" effect but I figured I'd explain how it worked anyways :D . A lot of people I play with don't realize that and they all try to stick together around the "yellow" guy rather than drop back and pick them off.

Is it just me or does every single server get super laggy when it gets to level 2 now?

I got some lag even with full green bar ping, so maybe it's a new bug.

I can't wait until this unlocks :D

Nah, I've played the demo way too long to able to not tell the difference. ie a shitload.

There was no visible outline and he was down and swarmed a good 5 seconds before the Boomer even showed up.

I like how there's still ~21,000+ people playing the Left 4 Dead demo every day. There's twice as many people playing the demo than still playing retail TF2 on Steam.

Is it normal to see enemies attacking each other? Yesterday I ran into a couple of zombies having a sparring match in the living room, and a hunter attacking a witch.

Never saw boss zombies going at it before, but I've seen the normal ones fighting each other a bunch of times.

My first time being, when you leave the demo to run at the main menu (street scene) and after that, every once in a while in-game.

Got just playing a couple of games and only at the end of the last game did my hiccups finally stop. Wonder if the update needs some files gummed out. It was a 56 ping, so hopefully that's the end of those issues. Was doing some stupid things thanks to it.

Yeah. Boomer or not, they like to single out a single person a lot of the time. Especially when a person is down and they can get a good stomp fest going.

For the people worrying about pc specs it looks like the game is more cpu intensive than gpu. I can run it maxed out @1280x1024 on an x1950gt with no performance change if I lower graphical settings.

Yeah it seems to hiccup when you first start lvl 2 in the safe room. Happened in both games I've played since the latest update.

Ha-ha. I went to load Left4Dead and was gonna crank the film grain to 100 percent and play single player easy for laughs, and I saw my video settings were reset after the update.

I knew the screen looked weird. Usually play 1280*960 and it defaulted back to 1600*1200. That may have explained some of my issues.

Sometimes a team just gets the fire placement *just* right.

No idea why az was in the hole while it was on fire, he claims he "was shoved". Er, shoved by what? This place is totally clean of zombies.

Later on, he jumped off of the walkway, hurting himself in the process, but where he landed was also on fire from his own molotov. But that wasn't all. He'd hang off edges for no reason, he constantly ran ahead from the group and got himself in trouble, he flooded the text chat with pleas for healing, etc.

I got impatient and I kicked him :/

Mmm nothing worse than players like that,as i go out of my way to help my teammates and that can sometimes mean us getting taken by surprise. If it's an accident sure, but doing it deliberately...that's not on.

It's IMPOSSIBLE to find a server!

Yeah, the last update really messed something up. There are tons of server admins complaining about the same bugs on Valve's mailing list. They are looking into the issue at the moment...

Someone must have a vendetta against me on youtube. Gave our demo run part 1, one star, and part 2, two stars...

Who gives someone 1 star?

maybe an odd question.

I don't have a 360 or a PC. But I have a mac with parallels and crossover. As this is source engine, should it work ok in crossover games? Can you even run steam in a virtual machine?

anybody with a mac running this?

you can but you shouldn't. performance will be terrible. you can use bootcamp and install xp on your mac. that way you are dual booting.

honestly, build yourself a decent PC. It will be good for ya. can be done for $700.

I run it on a Macbook Pro with XP via bootcamp. I have yet to have a problem with bootcamp, and the gaming performance is great.

No idea who it was I was just playing with from the GAF group, but I think I need to find some older and more mature players on here than what I just experienced... Getting called a "faggot" as soon as I joined should've been my first clue :lol Steam btw.

I'm running it on my macbook pro in bootcamp (win xp) and it runs perfectly, everything on high, high fps.

Thats strange...I mean PC GAF usually isnt bad at all when it comes to stuff like that.

It was probably someone from this boards friend or something. I tried looking up the Steam profile, but it wasn't even filled out yet :/ Either way, I just had a few great games with some good peeps, so the planets are aligning again ;)
