On the last game I played one of our team was foolish enough to stay near the escalators as we moved through the ticket area toward the subway platforms. We were remarking on how few Infected there were in these areas for once, when he shouts for help: he'd been pinned by a Hunter quite a bit behind us. We scamper back and there is a swarm of the fuckers coming back down the escalators from whence we had already cleared them out. This was something new and surprising on my seventh play. I'm sure there will be new and surprising things happening on my seventeeth play. We'll see about seventieth.

I take back what I said about the game's performance. I turned off the stupid grain filter and suddenly it runs like a dream. So I'm pretty happy.

Now if Valve just made it so I could, you know, connect to servers and play with other human beings, I'll be really happy.

I still haven't even completed it on expert, but I feel like the weapon balance is off. expert makes the uzi more useful, but in terms of the 3 "advanced" guns (I'll just call them that because they're upgrades to the 2 starting primary guns) the best one is easily the assault rifle. The auto shotgun is barely better than the regular shotgun. The hunting rifle is good, but it has a lot lower amount of ammo than the assault rifle, which is pretty deadly at long ranges, has twice as much stock ammo, and over 3x the clip size.

I just hope the other guns in the game will be better/different. I don't necessarily mean wildly different than the shotgun, full auto, or semi-auto rifle setup they have now, just that they should make guns that offer some different playstyles.

I also got a password protected server today. This and some crappy servers out there show that the system still needs lots of work. Hope they get it right till release.

I hadn't thought too much about it, but once I'd tried them all once I began to grab the assault rifle by default. I sort of agree about the auto-shotgun being a minimal upgrade, though. The only improvement seems to be speed, and that's offset somewhat by the reload. But I have a feeling the hunting rifle will be a lot more useful on other levels, some of which will be a lot more open than an underground subway.

Thanks, but the problem for me is not the matchmaking, it's that I can't connect to any server, period. It's a problem a bunch of folks have, especially in Europe apparently.

2. Double Click "Download Now"
3. Enter the Demo code when prompted
4. Enjoy the game!

I do step one, then there is no actual 'download now' only install now, so I click that, it takes me to steam (same page), I click install now in steam, it does nothing.

I don't know, I find the shooting to be awful. I wish it wasn't, but it is. Many nice considered multiplayer choices in there though.

Yep, it sure does. If you go back to page 26 you can see some vids I captured from single player.

I picked a terrible time to switch to Vista on my PC. I needed to format my system HDD, so I figured I would get a head start on being accustomed to Vista for when I build a Nehalem rig. My PC has a overclocked Athlon 3500, 2GB DDR, and a 7800GTX. For Source games up to Episode 2, I've been able to run everything at max (except for blur), 1920x1200, and still get 60FPS........on XP. Now with Vista I've got half the system RAM being eaten up by the OS alone, and at the lowest 16:10 resolution with details at low/medium, I'm getting between 0 and 60 FPS :lol

Vista does not work that way.

I still dislike it though.

And wow, the PC version actually has a "Vsync triple buffered" setting. First time I can recall not having to boot up the ol' D3DOverrider.

That's one thing I'd like to see in updates though, a truly insane range of weapons. It being America, tons of stuff should be lying around.

Odd, I think Valve's gunplay is goddamn stellar each and every time. Especially now with the zombie animation and hit detection being so very realistic. I've honestly never had more fun shooting stuff than with this game.

Finally got through on Advanced, Expert is super difficult.

Yeah, Expert is just insane.... I finished it a couple of times on Advanced, but no way am I ready for Expert.... This game is pretty damn hard.
