The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Just played the demo on XBL. Fun playing with people who don't fully understand the game yet... I worry about them getting too impatient with failure though.. even though for me it was fun as hell when I was them.

360 version is just as fun as the PC, picking one over the other isn't really a choice of quality and that's really all one could hope for. I'm more about having console gamers exposed to Valve games and not the usual popcorn shit that is usually hailed.

With the PCs mods, maps, skinning, cheats and KB/M its the obvious choice for me and many people I know. Plus just to make the demo extra hard I binded some keys that allow me to play Dungeon Master

Teehee?

I doubt it. A few people I know who are XBL junkies feel like L4D is too shallow to get alot of people playing it for long. When I played the demo I thought it was fun, yet I did wonder about the staying power. I am going to buy the game, yet I do have reservations about how long I will play it until I get bored. Maybe the final game will ease my fears.

The demo is what, 10 minutes long? and people have spent hours on it. "Not deep enough" isn't what's going on here for your friends.

What was the peak # of players online according to Steam stats for Team Fortress 2 near it's release? Was it anywhere near Counterstrike? I wonder how Left 4 Dead will compare to Team Fortress 2 in sales and regular players over time.

The PC version will be more than worthwhile im sure.

On a side note, where are all my Half Life 2 single player mods and level packs? Half-Life 1 had an insane amount of great single player mods, level packs, etc. HL2 has been out for quite awhile now, yet nothing.

I find it funny people talking about staying power, yet will happily play the same three maps in a Halo or CoD for hours on end.

To be fair that isn't an accurate arugment. Those are sandbox type of situations in how you approach combat.

Left 4 Dead is amazingly fun co-op but it isn't going to be for every one. I've played enough to see that. It's more for people who enjoy fun co-op experiences which is a different sort of thing.

I see the PC crowd in this thread though is gonna get their panties in a bunch if not every one feels the exact same on the title.

Don't really see how it's different. Hell even L4D will have versus, so there will always be the randomness that is a real player.

If you have a PC that can run it as well or better than the 360 version, then go PC. But if you don't (or you prefer Live), then there's nothing at all wrong with the 360 version. It's a fine port.

About the demo, you know a lot of folks will play through it one time on Normal and then just think it's okay. The demo does not come into full stride until you go Expert and have at least a half dozen playthroughs. Only then can you really appreciate how useful the director is for varying the experience.

Also, a good team is key. If you have shitty team then you'd be better off just playing with the AI (which is still pretty fun).

It's not the same and I'm not really gonna veer off overly into that argument. I enjoy the game and almost certainly will buy so it's not like I'm knocking it in anyway. It's a different experience from combat multiplayer fps's. That doesn't make it superior or inferior, just different. Which is the reason I assume they put it out. It's not like the other multiplayer Fps on the market.

Isnt L4D sandboxish too? The enemies and whatnot thrown at you are random for the most part and of course, based on player performance. Im sure just like the orange box, L4D will most likely do better on PC.

Anyway....got my headset ready and im at 43% PC version finished.

Is there any split screen in the 360 demo?

This is one game that I actually plan to buy twice. 360 day 1 for split screen on the couch. PC version when the price comes down a bit for mods.

That is why I am so excited about it.
Nothing wrong with that in the least.

I think PC people know exactly what they are getting. The console guys probably don't as much. It's more comparable to Gaunlet than say Gears of War as inelegant a comparison as that is.

Played on normal last week but tried expert just now. Was playing it offline but felt it was a good challenge. Got to almost the end on my first try without dying but damn if a boomer ever gets you the shit storm that can fly is intense. Those fucking witches to are pretty freaky.

Man this game is owning my soul. I have like 8 games I've bought in the past couple of weeks sitting here waiting to be played and all my time is going into this demo.

Valve > All

See my last comparison. I'll stop derailing. The game is very good and I'd rather talk about how much fun it is versus engaging in the tired PC versus console wars.

Well the good news is that my laptop can run it, the bad news is that it runs it like shit. Time to get a 360.

Did you lower all the settings? Also if you have a nvidia graphics card, you can use the nvidia control panel to help increase performance.

L4D is basically reverse sandbox. Instead of you having the freedom to make up your gameplay, the computer is given the freedom to make up your gameplay.

I'd like to see this approach used more often. It's the ultimate trump card for replayability of an otherwise linearly progressing game.

How does hosting work for L4D? The same way as other valve games? Just wondering because i've got a fairly standard DSL connection, and dont want to host if it'll make people lag or something.

There are dedicated servers that Valve and anyone else can set up. Matchmaking sometimes puts you in a server with a bit of lag, but it's not bad, and the full game will let you choose from server lists.

Nope. They use dedicated servers with an Xbox Live style matchmaking system. And if it can't find a dedicated server, then you get the option to "LAN" which basically means you host it for everyone.

On that last point, I'm not sure if YOU host it, or if the fastest connection of your group hosts it, a la Halo 2 and 3....

Hopefully in the LAN-ish situation, they split hosting duties like Gears of War 2, where they have one person hosting the chat and another the game.

could regular users set up servers?

I need to learn to pay attention to witches.
My first play through I hear a weeping woman standing near the subway car, so I switch to my assault rifle and aim for her head. Right when my friend shouts, "DON'T shoot her!" I unload a clip at the Witch. Needless to say I died instantly :(

Well your gun paid attention! :P

I think they need to rework the witches a bit. She pretty much kills the person, who startled her and then runs off it seems. A tank is more dangerous atm.

Also witch + tank is just evil. Stupid director!

That was my second time I did it. And sadly, in that game, I just thought it was a bum zombie crouching in the cable car. Didn't even know it was the witch until she killed me 2 seconds later.

That's what she was doing in the cable car and I thought she was outside on top. So fire away I did.

Witch is easy if you have an auto-shottie. I killed one with two shots to the face as it charged at me.

Tank is pretty much easy period, as long as you don't let yourself get cornered. The subway cars really help a lot. I always run in one and take potshots as it's climbing around, unable to get inside. Or chasing everyone else as they panic. O: (It can still hit you if you're inside, however. DON'T STAND NEAR THE DOORS.)

So we all jump off the side of the building to get down to the alley and Crushed takes his sweet time up there. When he finally decides to come down, he ends up getting stuck hanging off the ledge with no one to save him and I decide to watch him fall to his death. It didn't quite work out as I had planned...

Really? What difficulty did you play on? My first time through the game we ran into a witch, we all surrounded her and unloaded...pretty uneventful

just tried the 360 demo, I'm not feeling this at all; the zombies run retardly-looking fast, it's almost comical; or it feels like the video is fastforwarded. The gameplay wasnt anything special, I tried the solo mode with 3 bots at expert. It just wasnt really fun at all. It's just the same respawning zombies, over and over and over again; with the super fast zombies randomly out of nowhere.

Maybe I was too hyped, but eh, this is perhaps the biggest letdown of the season for me.

Yeah that happens, if you take shortcuts! Serves you right!

You're entitled to your opinion but I suggest you try it multiplayer before you form your opinion if you haven't.

Seriously. This is a MP game and people are judging it with the AI as their teammates....

If you like coordinated small-team games then get your damn friends on with you and do some runs on Expert. It's a blast, especially when you come up on a Tank.
