The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Could even use normal Source physics for that. Put some file cabinets, tables, chairs, couches, etc. and add a push or carry function/animation.
Yep. In HL2 I would do that to slow combine/zombies. I wouldn't mind that at all in L4D. Right now in L4D I rely heavily on shutting doors and shooting through them, just like I did in the village in RE4. The L4D demo is great. I've been waiting so long for a horror game to have monsters that appear from random locations, instead of just one spot each play through. The game makes you so paranoid. This is one of the first fps games(or maybe any kind game) I've played that I'm relieved and glad when I find the better weapons. It really feels like something is out to get me and I'm not just avoiding a game over screen. The witch is is scary too. When I hear that crying and that creepy music, it's like, "oh shit."

No Mercy - City/Hospital campaign
Blood Harvest - Farm/Forest campaign
Dead Air - Airport/Runway campaign
Death Toll- "Rural"?

Want moar info on Death Toll!

Just played the PC demo, this game looks freaking awesome and runs amazingly well. I literally maxed EVERYTHING (1920x1200, 16xQsaa, and whatever other options there were) and kept up a constant 60fps, even with oceans of zombies. Yay source engine!

Ah - just downloaded the X360 demo and played it through on 4-player co-op. It was *fun*, although the action was so hectic at times that I had a hard time keeping up with it. We encountered zombie-bosses, yes, but I still don't know what they look like. That's how hectic it was.

Still, this went from a 'maybe' to a 'must-buy on day 1'. No doubts about that.

I can't believe how hard it is to go back once you've played a few rounds of Expert. Provided it's just with average players, on a "normal" server, you'll be basically single-handedly winning the campaign for the other players.

Taking a break from L4D, getting burnt out on it now, 20+ hours.
The witch should be left in though, her sobbing and the BG music really adds to the atmosphere.

The Witch is fantastic. The amount of times I have been online with friends and said "Shhhh!...Witch!" and watch all the flashlight click off and everyone stealths around. The added crying and music really freaks me out. :D

Got the 360 demo, it was pretty fun, even though I didn't play it online.

Just out of curiosity, would my pc be able to run it? Athlon xp 2100+, 1gig ram, ATI Radeon 9700?

I love the intro, all that and they only crossed the street.

I played a few rounds of the PC demo last night, holy shit this is a blast. I'm hoping this game has some serious Team Fortress-like long legs because I want it to be kicking next year, when I'm done with grad school and can put the serious time into it it deserves. As it is I'll probably be buying it and trying to sneak a round in as often as possible.

Seeing as how people have already gotten some HL2/ep1 maps working, I imagine the community for the full game will be pretty strong. City17, Ravenholm, Nova Prospekt, various Ep2 maps, all it'll take is to crack Hammer open to move and swap some assets around and BAM tons of new campaigns.

That is the shit I want to hear. I'll dabble the next few months but summer 09, when the 70 hour weeks end, I am all over this shit.

So is the "director" just kind of an AI brain you can swap into any mod campaigns and it'll still be as dynamic?

This might be *the* reason to get this game for PC.

That's the reason I'm getting the PC version the community can always be relied on to bring things over from other Source games.

Somebody needs to mod the canal level from HL2.

In fact it looks worse than the Orange Box on 360, I guess Valve is really struggling with the 360's hardware - mainly with the limited amount of memory I guess but that's expected as they're a PC-centric dev team.
That's a blatant lie and you know it. Valve's Orange Box port for the Xbox 360 was very mediocre, and Certain Affinity did a much better job with Left 4 Dead across the board.

It is true that they could've done a better job with the overall graphics though, but I'm satisfied with the port in that regard.

Does this game have split-screen MP option ?
On the 360, yes. On the PC too, but that was an unofficial hack for the demo I thought.

Wow. The thought of playing this in Ravenholm... :D

So yeah, as many others have said... holy god this game is awesome. I checked out both the 360 and PC demos last night and was blown away by how this looks on my slightly outdated rig. The charging zombie animations are phenomenal to say the least. I'll be picking this up on PC day one. Would love to get some co-op on with fellow Gaffers.

You've got to be kidding me..but that's no way the best they could do with the 360 hardware - this game should've run at high settings with AA/AF and running at 60fps on 360 to be considered a great port. Right now it's a decent port and nothing more.

In fact it looks worse than the Orange Box on 360, I guess Valve is really struggling with the 360's hardware - mainly with the limited amount of memory I guess but that's expected as they're a PC-centric dev team.

Anyway the game it's too much fun and still a day one purchase for me and my friends.

The source engine was not designed with multi-core environments in mind. I believe left 4 dead is the first valve game running on the latest Source that supports multi-core. There are many issues with the 360 and ps3. One of them being that they're running powerpc procs instead of intel. Valve is comprised of ex microsoft employees who became experts with Intel chips. Then there's the low memory, the crap gpu, etc.

Valve is not a great multiplatform dev. but if you have a PC they are the best.

So, no, seriously, how does that work exactly?

The AI takes care of the enemy placement and pacing no matter what map you throw at it. What I've read in this thread is that the only thing that has to be in place are walking paths. Basically the AI Director needs to know where things can walk on the map. So yeah expect a crap ton of maps and parts of other Source games being turned into L4D maps.

In short: The AI Director is run by magic.

Played for both 360 and PC, with PC looking and "feeling" better. I had been torn between the two, but I'll probably opt for PC now. Now to join the GAF group on Steam...

man, I might have to double dip with this game....

I want the pc version for the mods and infinite replay value in years to come...

but I have to get the xbox version because most of my rl friends are getting this on 360 since they don't have gaming pcs.

shit....

am I the only one being faced with this decision of double dipping on this game? I know I can't be.

maybe I will just get 360 version, and then a year later when that game is literally left 4 dead on 360, I will get the PC version perhaps. (probably be cheaper by then)

Wow. Cool stuff!

I played both the PC and the 360 versions last night for 5 hours. While the 360 version looks and plays "okay", I was shocked when I started playing the PC version. The difference in IQ between the 360 and the PC version is pretty damn great.

Right now, I am not very impressed with the port to the 360. Again, it's not bad, but we all know that the 360 is capable of more than this.

So it looks like I'll be getting both versions (the 360 so I can play with my friends who don't have a PC that can run the game).

That's pretty much my exact situation, except I have friends on the PC side as well.

Played the demo last night on 360 in single player and with friends. Great fun, but the game really is light years better with friends. Single player wasn't all that special to me, but working with others was amazingly fun, with so many hilarious and cool moments.

I'll definitely be grabbing this game to play on Live. One of the better experiences I've had so recently.

It's so accessible to co-op as well. A lot of other games I never experienced too much co-op with (Halo 3, Gears) because the story was pretty central and it was tough getting the same people together for an extended play time. Here, fuck it, I'll just hop into a game. It's not like anything's going to get ruined.

Yeah, another good point. So easy to jump in and jam through a few levels then call it a day without worrying about having to get the same group together to play again. Very fun co-op for sure, and it's awesome how the experience differs from game to game, even on the same level.

My 1st experience with the game was fucking awesome. I get online and hop into a game that's on the default difficulty. A few minutes later I get a message from Rayne giving me shit for playing on an easy level. So Rayne makes a room and I have no idea what the controls are because I literally only played for 10 seconds in the previous room. I stayed towards the back of the pack as we eased into the apartment. When we get to the 1st whole in the wall that leads outside I sit back and watch as I fumble around with the controls some more. Something tells me to look behind me and there is a horde of zombies coming from behind us and my only reaction was to start yelling "OMG!!" repeatedly into the headset.

I have never had a game just yank emotion out of me like that. That was awesome and we got a good laugh out of it.

One of the achievements in both Steam and 360 versions is to kill a witch with a single headshot. I assume the best way to do this is to approach her from the side while she's on the floor. I tried this a few times with various weapons (sniper rifle, single pistol, autoshotgun) but was never able to do it.

Anybody managed this yet?

Note to everyone: Jedi likes to burn the crew to a cinder while supposedly warning people beforehand that he was tossing a molotov. :p
