The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

My teammates and i were playing No Mercy on expert last night. While we got to the subway, one of the other players through a molotov into the train, setting the whole thing on fire. Suddenly, a smoker grabbed the guy who through the molotov and dragged him through the flames. It looked like he was being dragged into hell itself. After that, a tank came right behind us and took us out. Talk about EPIC. :D

I HATE YOU

Ugh, Thanksgiving break can't come early enough.

Yes. For two player. I assume you're talking 360, anyway.

If not, there's a sort of hack to play PC splitscreen with a 360 controller plugged in!
Woohoo! Thanks! This seems like a great game to get together with somebody in person and shut all the lights off and play.

Yeah, and if you want to take a quick break, you can do so and let the AI control you for a bit and save your spot without making everyone else stop. (Which they really can't anyway because the director shits on your face if you stay in one area too long.)

OH ALSO: In a couple hours I will begin playing this game. ): I have homework I absolutely need to do though. Well even after I finish this I'll have shit I need to do, butttttttt. BREAKS ARE GOOD FOR THE SOUL, RIGHT?

It really is amazing how each game is like an action movie all in itself, and different every time. The directors pacing and enemy placement are marvelous, and even the calm moments are terrifying, because you know they will only last for a little while.

PS- The tank music is going to go down in video game history as the single biggest "Oh shit" moment ever.

Some VS screens for every person, who is still at work!

Holy crap. I just had the most awesome match. We did all of No Mercy and it took us 7 tries to beat the last part on Advanced (which feels a bit more like Expert was on the demo, just a tad easier).

Had to face FOUR tanks (one in the scaffold area, then three during the finale). By the time the chopper came down there were four waves that came out of nowhere, PLUS tank #4. I just said "fuck it" and auto-shotty'd my way to the chopper while my teammates got completely owned. I barely jumped in as the tank was taking a swing at me and then the credits rolled. What a rush. This game will last forever.

Yes, always 4 people. If not enough players, the AI will play the other characters.

If you own the server or are playing single player, you can remove all survivor bots with the following command: director_no_survivor_bots (so yes, you can play solo and stuff)

Experiment a little. I don't remember if you had to enable sv_cheats, but the only way I got it to work was put in the command before opening up a single player game.
//screenshotmode.cfg - prepares game for player to take nice screenshots/movies; execute before loading single player game/server

sv_cheats "1"

director_no_survivor_bots "1"
god "1"
cl_drawhud "0"
r_drawviewmodel "0"
bind g "z_add"
bind h "nb_rush"
bind b "z_spawn witch"

//director_stop - keep all enemies from spawning automatically

It really is. The Director makes it all feel incredibly "cinematic" while maintaining a natural flow of gameplay, in direct opposition to games that try to replicate that movie feeling with scripted events, cutscenes, and QTE sequences with dramatic camera angles.

Prime example early in the game: climbing across the warehouse roof in the third level of No Mercy. Fleeing out of narrow alleys into a wide open stretch of pavement, filled with a loading dock, a fueling station, a lift, and zombies scattered around the dock's platform. Running to the lift, watching as everybody gets on, quickly hitting the lift's switch as you all slowly rise up as the music and messages warn you about the oncoming horde. Everyone looks out at the pavement, waiting for the inevitable rush of zombies across it. Only a few swarm from a corner nearby. You turn around and realize that they're coming from behind, over the roof. They jump down from ledges, maybe a Boomer too, as you shove them back and fight through them. As you shoot at another swarm coming from that corner, your bullets hit the fueling station tanks, and it simply explodes in a spectacular display, crushing the zombies and making all the players simply stop in disbelief for a moment.

As you get closer to the ledge on the other side, more zombies rush up, and start climbing up onto the trucks en masse, from where they leap onto the roof. As you start to jump through the broken wall into the next building, they start to closely follow you. Hunters, Smokers, Boomers, they suddenly attack while you're focused on moving forward. Zombies even start coming out of the hole you were trying to jump down into. You fight them off fiercely even as one or two of your allies are helplessly pinned down. Suddenly, you realize that it's over. They're gone. Everyone gets picked up, healed up, and moves on.

Absolutely amazing game.

I definitely noticed the performance chug up a bit in the full game. They added different lighting to the demo's "final room" which I thought was interesting.

I'm fucking speechless about the gameplay though. I can't really add anything to what has already been said.

Valve, I love you.

Hey! Will someone make a L4D avatar for me please? Preferably the part where Louis shoots the witch? Can it also be under 100kb? It would be really appreciated!

A game like this desperately needs some Shawn Elliot analysis.

I demand something in the form of a podcast or a written article about this game from this man. Something this awesome and from Valve demands his time.

Job be damned, THIS IS IMPORTANT!

...oh what I'd give to hear his sultry voice whisper sweet nothings about the the AI_Director. My loins long for the gentle caress of deep discussions around what a Versus mode introduces to the gameplay and how it may make/break the initial design...

I miss you, Shawn... SHAWN!!!!!!!!!!!!

The dollar is worth too much for me to want to buy this game through steam right now :/

And with VAT ontop of the 50 dollar price tag the game would cost me more on Steam than if I bought it in a store.

I have it under 150kb (for gaf), but not 100kb. I'll edit this post when I get a nice balance at 100kb.

There were some really classic maps and scenarios made for the Zombie Panic and Zombie Master mods, I can't wait for the same kind of people to start making campaigns for L4D.

Damn, Amazon is out of stock on the 360 version. Seems like a good sign for the game's sales though.

Dude, I don't know what the general opinion on this board is, but personally I found the PC-version of the game being a lot better than the X360-version.

Dammit, I don't know how my Computer will handle L4D. It's a bit older now...

I was just going to get the 360 version, but...I don't know :(

Even one of my co-workers, who basically hasn't been a PC gamer in a decade, thought the PC version was better.

This is most likely the case, but I'm getting insane amounts of enjoyment out of the 360 version.

If I had the option of either, I'd probably still end up getting the 360 version to play with my friends, however.

I played it on a Lenovo T61P laptop yesterday and it ran perfectly. It's not a gaming laptop at all more of a business class.

Has a Nvidia Quadro 570m. I was really surprised how well it ran with medium settings.

Should I spend $20 at a cafe to play L4D with GAF all evening.

or

Should I put the money into the "New PC Fund".

hmm decisions decisions. you guys sure aren't helping with all the positive impressions.

If you use your computer for a lot of tasks in your life, it's justifiable. You can tell the Mrs. that you're saving lives.

I played the demo all night until I had to go to school on Monday morning. Then I slept all day and had to buy the game :p.... which is a good thing! as I came across...

Valve Complete Collection. 99dollers for 20 games? And I haven't played Portal, TF2, HL2: Ep2, CS:Source or even TF1 so the value for me is crazy. Thanks Valve!

I tried to join a game with Red Scarlet and some others but my computer crapped out. Then the game was full. I only have enough RAM for a few hours without a reboot. But I promised myself I would't upgrade until StarCraft 2 hit :(

edit: nevermind, you're downloading the demo. You're about to find out for yourself pretty soon anyway.

Yup. My computer is something like this:
PC4200 DDR2 1024MB RAM
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0Ghz
ATI Radeon HD 3450

My fps with everything set to low fluctuates WILDLY between 20-60. I'll try capping my fps :(

And on to the game. It's brilliant.

I think this goes without saying. When I was a huge CS nut I scoffed @ the Xbox version but ended up playing it just because that's what my friends were getting. Same thing for me with Left 4 Dead--I'd much rather play it on a PC for the better overall community and inevitable mods but all my friends are strictly 360, so that's where I'm playing as well. Not only that, I don't even have a serviceable PC @ home currently, and even if I did, I wouldn't have the time to play online like I used to with CS (was pulling about 7 hours a day at one point for an entire summer) so 360 version is perfect for me since it will be in short bursts and only with a few friends.

But I do long to see it on a good PC. And to play it with a mouse & kb.

I'm a college student with a job (thank god). I paid off my rent for 2 months so I could just put everything else into buying a new computer. The problem is that I'm probably going to have to work during thanksgiving and winter break in order to afford a good rig. Freaking rent kept me from having a new PC in time for L4D launch.

Most games are better on PC, but that doesn't mean the Xbox 360 version isn't good. Both versions are great games, and some people are double dipping to play with all their friends.

Just make sure you buy at least 1 version, it's so fun :D

How much are you looking to spend?

Elaborate?

Well, I tried the X360-version first I didn't like the game at all. It moves too fast and the aim isn't, for obvious reasons, as good as in the PC-version. I played with a friend and most of the time it felt like I was playing some old school FPS arcade style or something, simply because it's so messy and I found it hard to play with any other kind of strategy than just shooting in every direction. I think it's because of the speed of both your characters and the zombies, combined with the controls.
And as soon as someone went down the other one would just run there, shooting and meleeing randomly to try to rescue the downed team mate.

In the PC-version it looked a lot better in regards of graphics, and it controlled better. To me it felt like I didn't move as fast and floaty as in the X360-version, and the aim is better which helps a lot when there are so many enemies. I've only played like one game of L4D on the PC so far, but my impression there was that it was easier to use strategies and didn't as easily end up just like a random arcade shooter.

Thing is, I like console FPS, and I mainly play console games. For instance, COD4 to X360 is awesome and I've played it a lot, but in that game I can actually controll the character and aim well. L4D, to me, is a lot more floaty in terms of control, which probably is why I ended up playing it like an shooter from like ten years back.

I don't want to upgrade the computer until 2010.
I want it to run Starcraft II and L4D on max settings with a solid framerate (over 60fps).
How much does that cost? I'm willing to spend $800 on it.

This sums up my feelings fairly well, even if I play PC games a bit more than you. The COD4 example is perfect.

Someone else mentioned FPS capping. I -still- want that option, Valve! :( Even though they've apparently figured out how to not have screen tearing with non-vsync locked? I don't even think there's a vsync option (I actually play windowed though).

Well, lately I've started playing a lot more on the PC since I got a new PC. I still prefer the matchmaking system of COD4 on X360 to the typical PC FPS list of rooms, though :)
