The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Blizzard and I fooled around with console commands in servers for a while, and then I showed him a quick tour of my basic map layout. It was a quickly compiled fullbright version, so it wasn't too pretty. We both concur that it is fairly large.

On an additional note, I was very surprised we were able to play coop on it. It was a local server, but it worked nonetheless.

Just spent a good while playing around with custom server commands and Botolf's Giant Orange Map. It was fun, though I'm disappointed with the lack of configurability of some things...I want to see modders add custom weapons and stuff. :P And I didn't even find a way to get a moon gravity effect, though I did discover you can crank up the walk speed so hitting shift will suddenly give you Crysis-like superspeed.

I want the ability to use hunter pounces as a human. :(

Oh, and I noticed there's an option to allow the smoker to click/turn away to release his tongue. That would be -really- useful, though perhaps unfairly useful to smokers.

*edit* Here's one of my screenshots. You can slide down the stair handrail on the top part, which is entertaining.

Sliding down that thing was unexpected and awesome. I remember somebody compared those garish orange textures and such to ME, grinding on that rail sure felt Mirror's Edgeish for a minute :lol

Im sure this has been mentioned a thousand times already but I have to vent.

Why does everybody push that machine in front of the elevator trapping the team inside?
Its not like it even makes killing the other team easy - it just delays the game for an eternity. Whats the point? Why do people do this?
This happened to me on 3 separate occasions yesterday. I got to the point where when the elevator door opens and that machine is unsurprisingly blocking the path I apologize to my team and leave the game.

This is messed up. I cant wait for Valve to fix this.

Eventually you can widdle down the other team and they'll die (if they don't exit the game altogether before).

Of course, I totally agree...it makes everything drag on FOREVER. And I've mostly seen it used with really terrible teams who are losing horribly.

When on earth are Valve going to buy servers in the East? Playing with +300ms ping for the last few weeks has become tiresome. However, looks like everyone was having the same issues tonight...

I just realized how much I loooove watching Left 4 Dead gameplay videos. It's like watching a zombie movie, but even better! If you guys know of any great or otherwise interesting L4D videos, please post them here - for I shall watch them ALL.

They're more amusing than anything, but angelsdawn and mookalokka have a fair number of L4D videos on their channel.

It's been full a lot recently, but feel free to use my server if it's open. It's in DC and I ping about 20-50 to it from the NYC area. Haven't had many complaints about the ping.

:lol He meant the Far East. Good to hear that your server's been full quite frequently, though. I know you were having some trouble getting it associated with the GAF group.

Well, it's still not associated with either GAF group.

One thing I've noticed is that if I set sv_search_key, that blocks anyone from joining without the key. I wish there was a way to allow it to be grabbed for lobbies, but also available for those people who know the secret knock, essentially.

So the server mostly runs without the sv_search_key at this point - which means it's readily grabbed, so much so that I have to boot people off if I want to use it myself. (At which point I set the search key.)

Maybe I'll go hound the GAF L4D group folks and get it bound to that group, since the main GAF group seems too large.

I see all these ping problems, and I can't help but think "Thank god for PC gaming".

Being able to choose a server down the road from you is super awesome.

I just wanted to pop in and say that this game is truly amazing. I just got it last week when I built a new computer and it is a glorious experience. The game looks great at 1900x1200 with maximum settings running at 60+fps. I really like the "clean look" of the Source engine.

I'm sure it has been said a million times already, but the gameplay is just incredible. I've been playing the game for 1 - 3 hours every night since I got it, but so far I have only been doing the campaigns on normal difficulty (online of course). I love how dynamic the gameplay can be. It makes it so you can't just memorize a level and breeze through it. Playing with total strangers has been a blast so far. Usually playing with strangers in team-based games is nothing but frustrating, but playing with people you don't know really matches the setting and gameplay of L4D. Something always goes terribly wrong because someone fucked up, but that is what makes this game so fun.

I can't wait to start playing it on higher difficulties and start doing versus. This is definitely my new favorite online shooter and I'll probably be playing it for a good long while. I hope Valve supports it like they have been supporting TF2. My Steam ID is Zefah if anyone wants to add me and play a game together.

It's definitely my game of the year. With a good team and good communication, it's a truly amazing experience.

Except that only seems to work with the open server browser, as far as I know, and if you do that you're probably out of luck getting your 7 friends on at the same time as you without public people joining. Not to mention, if all that works, you might have fast tank spawns, or random teamswitches between levels...

agreed, but on the flipside, i hate this game when im not playing with people i know, its a huge burn playing co-op with asshats. I play with GAFers but the games are usually full.

when im in the pubbin mood (which has been a lot lately) i play TF2. (probably my GOTF)

versus is still the shit though, and i still havent played Dead Air or Death Toll. insane replayability.

Weird glitch:

Earlier, picked up the shotgun, and my arm faced away (like raising arm after a melee), and never came back. So no flashlight to help you out. Uzi was fine, but still really odd. AND REALLY ANNOYING.

No Mercy Versus mode is the worst shit on Earth right now. Everyone knows all of the exploits and bullshit.

Even on the PC version? I thought Valve patched out the exploits on that one at least.

The one where you melee the door in NM3 is still able to be done.
Yep, this is the worst one. This wrecks the absolute most fun part of the entire campaign for both sides. It's a rush to drag them down from the top as a Smoker, or to keep the wave coming with a Boomer, or to grab anyone alone as a Hunter. It all goes to shit because people skip 1/4th of the level now.

sv_search_max_ping 100

It's set at default to 250. That will search lobby games with ping being a maximum of 100 (Obviously you can change that to whatever you want).

Also, join some groups and you'll be able to see the servers associated with that group.
For example, I've joined a lot of Australian ISP groups, and now I can instantly join their servers whenever I choose. This results in me getting around 30 ping.

And speaking of public games, I've had very few games where people mess around. If they do, I just leave straight away. I've had plenty of highly enjoyable and co-operative players to play with, simply by joining public games. A microphone is essential, really.

Holy shit, those posters look awesome. It's a shame that international postage is so expensive.

I dunno if it's being asked, but was there any reason why only 2 of the campaigns were included in the Versus mode? I love versus mode but I'm a little miffed as to why you can only do No Mercy and Blood Harvest :S

In other news, hanging for some new maps but I have a feeling MS will be doing their best to screw 360 owners by enforcing some MS points on the situation.

THIS THIS THIS.

Crane blocking the doorway leading out of the warehouse in stage 3 and the elevator block on stage 4. At least if there are 4 people left you can hit the elevator block out of the way after a few minutes of hitting it, but the crane doesn't move.

The blocking shit made us quit No Mercy on versus. We're pretty much playing Blood Harvest and it's getting really hard to keep people playing after the first stage. :(

Valve NEEDS to fix the blocking. Make it so that the infected can't move objects; only the Tank should be able to hit stuff.

That's what has already happened on the PC version, but if the 360 has a patch ready, it might be stuck in certification still.

For some reason the server browser for me keeps displaying only 1-10 servers. (Australia - filters are set for <150 ping, not full, not empty, no password), and searching for dedicated servers from the lobby (I like starting games from the start) leads to us all joining a god damn American server making it unplayable for all of us.

Are any other Australians (Or easterners) having to deal with this? I haven't been able to complete a single campaign with randoms because I either have to join midway through, or we get stuck on an unplayable server.

It's quite annoying.

Just bought it Friday, was going through Expert on No Mercy last night.
Got to the helipad and I think we tried 8 times to pass it to no-avail. A tank would show up (with the horde) and nail two of us, leaving the others to panic and frantically shout at each other.

When you're in a lobby, did you have everyone check their browser server and see if they're seeing the same things? I've posted on this before, so people know my theories on this.

But I've been meaning to do this. Because Jsnake hosts a lot of games and everytime I've ever played one of his games (or maybe it only seems everytime and it's only 95 percent) he's the lpb and his ping is 160. He's always 160-161. And it makes me think he's choosing from the same couple of servers everytime. So next time I play, I've been meaning to ask him to pull up the server browser and report what he's seeing. I'm betting everyone is seeing different servers and only a handful are seeing all they should.

After that, there will be another horder AND another tank, so have fun. :)

No Mercy and Blood Harvest finales are hardest IMO.

so, like most people I'll be busy during christmas, but for the week after, if anyone wants to try for What Are You Trying to Prove? on steam, let me know. I've nearly beaten Dead Air on expert, already cleared No Mercy, and nearly beaten Blood Harvest, too. I haven't even tried Death Toll on expert, and honestly after not playing it for so long I'm tempted to give it a go. I have beaten everything on advanced (shit, I can pretty much solo them on advanced) at least so I'm familiar with all the maps. though I'm only vaguely familiar with Death Toll.

Just fired up L4D for the first time in a while. Going to try to complete a campaign on Expert with a friend here soon. So since I haven't been paying attention, is there any word on a patch or DLC on the way?

Behind the trucks, under the awning that you are supposed to rush over. It skips the whole raising platform/ladder part when the horde is supposed to come.

Oh, I've nevcer seen a door under there, but then again, I've never really went under there on versus or even in campaign.

Edit: Okj,so I found a vid of it. Why not, if they are doing that? Block the warehouse door on them? Tit for tat.

I was just in a game where I was about to do the glitch unknowingly, then the people threatened to boot so I realized it was the one we discussed here.

On another note: Anybody on Steam up for an expert run?

I don't think I'm ever playing versus again. I hate losing and I lose 95% of the time. And it's not like TF2, where if I'm frustrated I can just up and quit. I feel like a dick if I just leave everyone hangin'. ;_;

Not For Me, I suppose.

thats weird, i leave every vs game i play right after my zombie turn is up. Some times, if my team pissed me off during zombie round Ill wait around long enough to kill myself right as i spawn as survivor. Never felt bad about it

Pretty sure you're just trolling this thread now

I was so excited for this game pre-release and played the demo to death but I've barely touched it since it came out.

It's such a pain to actually get the right number of people together. If I just jump online randomly there will probably be 2-3 servers with friends on them playing but they'll be full and nobody will leave till the end of the game, at which point it completely empties and they all quit. Pubbing is also probably the worst of any online game I've played, I've never once had an enjoyable game with people I didn't know.

Then if you somehow get everything set up perfectly it's likely you'll get some weird lobby glitch that kicks everyone or you'll join a server with terrible latency.

I mean I still haven't had a chance to play through anything other than No Mercy or Blood Harvest. I guess working a full time job has something to do with it, but with what little time I've had to try and play I always end up doing something else due to not being able to get a friend game. Then once every two weeks or so when I can get 3 people to play with me it's just Versus since they've all long since played campaign to death.

I dunno, I really really really want to play and love Left 4 Dead but right now it's high on my list of disappointments for the year. In fact this year sucked in general for games.
