My pick for #6:
The Searchers - John Ford
Easily one of America's greatest filmmakers, Ford delivers here in spades. His vistavision/technicolor capturing of Utah's Monument Valley is breathtaking, and provides for an easy recommendation based on this alone. The story, and strong performances, led by John Wayne, are a substantive bonus. If this isn't the greatest American western ever made, it surely can see the front of the line from where it stands.
My pick for #7:
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - Robert Wiene
It's obviously no secret that I love silent movies. This one, impressively filmed by Wiene, feels like an LSD trip without buying the drugs. It's also quite fun to watch, as it provides a feeling of uneasiness throughout. Give it a try, with the lights out....
My pick for #8:
Double Indemnity - Billy Wilder
Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G. Robinson are all fabulous and, in particular, believable in their respective roles which, to me, has always been the most significant component in noir type films. The story is wonderfully revealed, sprinkled with a bit of humor to ease the tension and this serves to heighten the impact of the drama as it unfolds. There are other terrific noir films, to be sure, but none in my estimation are better than this one....
