That sounds like quite the podcast... apart from attributing Chrono Trigger to Konami in the tl!

I will agree that the US is a bit of a wasteland for EDM but it's still a helluva lot better than it was a few years ago, at least in NYC. In the city, you can find interesting shows devoted to nearly every genre of EDM, we get all the big names - for instance this weekend Guy Gerber / Lee Curtiss / Guti / Deniz Kurzel are playing a yacht party (highly considering going, huge fan of Gerber and Guti is the coolest person ever!), there's also the Mister Saturday Night/Mister Sunday parties... but a few years ago, clubs were increasingly being targeted by the authorities, closing down as soon as they would pop up, and this would really hurt the scene (many people think the passing of the RAVE act in the early 2000's put the kibosh on dance music's late 90's burgeoning popularity in the states - and I can totally see why. Since so many people get exposed to less mainstream EDM via raves, or clubs). We have the superclubs to attract all the guidos, and there are enough alternatives to lure casual-EDM-fan trendy hipsters away, so most of the enthusiast dance events are attended by those who are really serious about the music.

I'm just happy I don't get confused stares when I tell people I listen to "house music" anymore (of course, they don't know I more likely mean Maceo Plex or Todd Terje than I do Calvin Harris or David Guetta). Try doing that in 1999, I think I freaked someone out when I told them I was currently listening to 'trance' on my discman :p

And I'm happy that people don't automatically consider anything with a 4x4 beat "techno" anymore. I think I got sick of explaining that techno is a specific subgenre of EDM the 41,000th time.

I'd spend the day at the Secretsundaze stage on Sunday. Go over to Ost Gut as a palette cleanser, but then go right back.

I have a lot of catching up to do, haven't picked up any music lately. Although I just noticed Der Dritte Raum's Wellenbad - One of my favorite ever trance/techno/acid house albums - has been re-released along with a bunch of remixes. Check it out if you like that old shit.

Thanks for the post! I'm an IDM fan, but being American it's sort of hard to follow IDM or EDM cause nobody cares over here. I know a lot of that list, but there is some new stuff I've never heard of. Obviously the stand outs like Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada (I have a cool BoC shirt I wear and nobody ever gets it), Autechre (had a cool shirt by them that I gave to my GF) and I have a friend that was obsessed with Tycho on spotify earlier this year I've heard.

I haven't head some of the stuff on your list though (at least I don't think) like Ice Cream Creatures, Wisp, Venetian Snares, and Unai. I'll do some listening later when I get home this evening! Thanks a ton dude! :D

PS: I like Bibio, but I tend to always get in this weird mode when I listen to his albums where I want the more electronica stuff to come out verses the more folky side that kind of made him famous.

Most have not heard about Ice Cream Creatures. I still haven't gotten a hold of the whole album (although i saw it on amazon for download).
IIRC i got some songs of them sent waaaaay back when i had contacts in the underground (or should i say unsigned) idm scene.
You should check out Slow Magic. Everyone should!
It's chillwave but have a lot of electronica influences.
SLOW MAGIC - Feel Flows
Just found them today actually.

So I'm trying to sell my vinyl collection but I have a few white label releases, one of which I completely forget what it is. All I know is that it's a remix of or samples Nelly Furtado's Promiscuous. Any help identifying what the track is?

Stream Ryan Hemsworth's Last Words EP:

Charly Wingate
Colour & Movement
The Happy Mask Shop
Slurring
Overthinking
Colour & Movement (Shlohmo Remix)
Overthinking (Supreme Cuts Remix)
Slurring (Baauer Remix)
Charly's Mask Shop (Sam Tiba & Canblaster Remix)

Loved this dude's output this year, there's been alot of great mixes/remixes. Nice to hear some original material. Actually a really nice EP. I really like "Overthinking" and "Charly Wingate". The remixes are great as well, the Shlohmo one especially and the Baauer one is absolutely nuts.

edit:

Blawan's release for Hinge Finger is up for sale but won't be going out till the 25th

My school only gets irrelevant indie rock bands. And Bon Iver.

Gross.

The lush bb posted it earlier. I like the tracks on the EP better, but this one's nice.

Always losing out to Lush nowadays! *FIST*
Bump

Ryan's output is insane this year.

Edit freaks: Alkalino - Moon Sun

This is so cheesy, so weird, and so good. This is guaranteed to bring a smile to anyone on the floor, sneak this into a set and it could be huge.

edit: Don't really care for Alkalino, but this song is just stupid fun. Overstays its welcome, but in short bursts its a knockout.

Blawan (Getting Me Down/Why They Hide Their Bodies in My Garage)
Deadmau5 (umm...Strobe/A City In Florida)
LCD Soundsystem (Dance Yrself Clean/All My Friends)

Haha, you are obsessed! I wouldn't recommend this against what he listed, but I feel like its a worthy mention regardless.

bigjimmystyle: try Paradis - Hemisphere, Parfait Tirage, Shinichi Osawa, Kim Hiorthoy, Hercules & Love Affair, Tim Zawada, Elitetechnique, Escort, Bufi, La Royale. Some might be a liiiittle more disco than you're asking for, but they all kind of borrow from each other.

edit: holy shit, how could I forget: Gesaffelstein, Radio Slave, Soulwax.

editedit: HOLY SHIT the new Mungolian Jet Set is FUCKING FANTASTIC! M.J.S. - Smells Like Gasoline Video may or may not be NSFW, I have no idea, it was the only non-junodownload link I found. The Skatebaard remix is tight, too, but nothing compared to the original. last edit: their new album comes out on the 20th and the whole thing is just brilliant. finalfinaledit: I don't know how I ever missed these two edits: Moon Jocks N Prog Rocks (Todd Terje's Schlong Tong Vocal Edit) and Moon Jocks N Prog Rocks (Todd Terje Even Stiv-En Dub Remix) (could only get a Beatport link, no YT or soundcloud). Unf.

Nice coming back from a weekend away and having new stuff to listen too!
Went on a boat party yesterday with Guy J playing and meet a few other Dj's which was pretty cool. Pretty funny aswell as one of the guys we went with looked like Sasha and my friend got mistaken for Guy J haha

Really sorry if I'm asking in the wrong place now, but this is about electronic music, so..

I'm trying desperately to find more music like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlZSf5tvKWM
Do note that I dislike Dubstep, so if this song missed those parts I'd love it even more.
The part from 1:55 to 2:35 I love!

and also
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_or8Ox5nzc4
I like all of it, but the part that starts at 2:40 is awesome.

Basically chiptune/music, but with more more elements added or like, more "fleshed out" with it. I'm not much of a electronic music-fan really, but I've loved chiptunes/8-bit-music since I was a kid (Love Dubmood for example, always have). Thing is, while plain chiptunes are great, for me they are a little too.. I don't know, simple? Thin? in the long run I mean..

Gah, excuse me, I'm Swedish and right now I'm also very tired, so I can't explain very well, haha..

Anyway, any tips are greatly appreciated!

First post in this thread, maybe it has been spoken about. I searched "Jeff Mills" and this thread came up.

I'm confused on these two styles of "Hard Techno".

Is one in the genre of techno, and one is considered "hard core"?

Jeff Mills and Dave Clarke, years 1991 - 2011. That is techno, but it's fast and hard.

Jeff Mills Live @ The Liquid Room, Tokyo 1995
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJKLgSmGt_g

Dave Clarke- Technology JJJ Mixup 01-01-2011
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpYChgHQB9I

O.B.I & Julyukie and Motormorfoses aka Eto & Gab. That sounds more aggressive, like hardcore, but also features the typical sounds you hear in Jeff Mills and Dave Clarke's techno.

O.B.I & Julyukie @ Escalate (Ludwigsburg - DE)

Motormorfoses aka Eto&Gab Live @ TheQontinent 2011
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnVI0BNDnio

Could anybody listen to the two styles and tell me your thoughts? I assume lots of people in this thread know about Jeff Mills and such. Thanks!

I'm sure someone could write up a lot to describe the differences between the styles in your post. But basically, Jeff Mills & Dave Clarke are techno artists, some of the best ever. Their music has some funk & melodic structure mixed in with the crazy sounds. Jeff Mills is one of the old school creators of Detroit techno. I'm sure a simple google search will bring up plenty to read about him.

The other more hardcore sounding stuff is somewhere inbetween Schranz & Gabber. It's intense but doesn't have much substance. There's not much melody, its all about the relentless pounding.

I enjoy both styles in different ways, though I think Jeff Mills and his contemporaries will be remembered forever, while I'm not so sure about these gabber heads. I think its safe to say that Jeff Mills early work (waveform transmissions) paved the way for hardcore techno styles that still live today.

wow! Thank you for the posting :)

I like your definition and thoughts on the matter. I'll do a little research after work about the style "Schranz".

Is there any artists you can recommend that have the same sound as Jeff Mills and Dave Clarke? That sound is my "go to" type of hard techno. I'm still unsure about the Schranz-Gabber type of sound. Like you said, it's just relentless pounding, not much melody.

Listening to some of that Live Liquid room Jeff Mills set makes me desperate for a digital release of DJ Funk's Run. Goddamn, what a classic.

Yeah, that's for sure. That Jeff Mills stuff is so classic

I found this website last night, but found it misleading. Some of the tracks that Jeff Mill has played was classified as "Rave" and "Hard Rave".
