I'd like to go to some of the other days, but they all only have one or two acts I really want to see and others that I just do not at all want to see. I don't know who thought it was a good idea to stick Octave One between Bashmore, Hyetal, and DJ Dodger Stadium or Recloose with Kode9, L-Vis 1990, Kelela and Obey City, but eh, I can't really complain all that much.

Best day.

Every time I think of Disclosure now, I just look at that photo used in the two articles posted on the last page, and it just makes me want to shave their pretentious little haircuts off and throw their hipster clothes in a fire. And probably punch them too, while I'm at it. They're good, but man... they're too fucking safe and clinical. I want some deep, pulled back stuff that sounds raw as fuck, not like it was done using an Ableton template.

Whoa there. In their defense, they don't use Ableton in their live setup at all. They have lost a lot of that "edge" that made them interesting, but that's to be expected with how quickly they've been catapulted into the limelight. The more I hear from the new album, the less I care about it. "What's In Your Head?" is still their best track, by a wiiiiiiide margin.

The vitriol that comes up when anyone mentions Disclosure now is pretty hilarious.

Wonder if I'll have the opportunity to actually see any of these this time around. Third time's the charm, right?

Decibel is also sponsoring that Julio Bashmore show a few days after this. At least I know Q is a stellar venue.

I wasn't inferring that they were using Ableton, just that their stuff, whilst some of it I genuinely like (White Noise is still a great little track), there's still something that's too clean and clinical about their sound. It's the same with stuff like trap (although there's more than that specific reason I don't like it). Regardless of how they were made, they still sound like they were done on a computer. If that makes sense.

The vitriol is a little weird, though, I agree. But I think we're seeing more of that in general in an industry where it's insanely fucking hard to get any kind of genuine respect when you're so young. That's why I wasn't a fan of that statement they made about their music sounding ageless, or offering themselves as the only alternative to David Guetta. Perhaps people as young as them, without the media experience should just keep the outlandish statements down to a minimum. Maybe they said it to (in some backward way) get some credibility, but it backfired. They should learn from the veterans... you rarely hear from them in the media.

Disclosure does sound really clean and safe, I think that's just the case of it being a bit more poppy. The hate is "commercial" backlash I guess. I do get the vibe that they're somewhat manufactured or something. They came out of nowhere, blew up, and are now everywhere way too quickly or something.

I still enjoy a good deal of their songs though. I like the newest one for the most part though the the vocal is a bit much for the entire track.

Agreed on all counts. The new track is neat, but to have to go through that vocal every single time? Yeesh.

Never thought of them being manufactured, but I suppose that's a possibility... I haven't read enough about them to know whether that's plausible or not. Almost makes you wonder whether someone could try pulling a Milli Vanilli these days and "fake" a group into stardom. Given how live a lot of things aren't or done on computer, it wouldn't be hard, all they'd need to do is mix competently or pretend to use Ableton. I think I've seen them do "live" (as in, with drums and other instruments) stuff too so it's unlikely in the case of Disclosure, but it's a funny thing to think about.

New Lone EP in July

loneart_52413.jpg

Nottingham's purveyor of dayglo dancefloor sounds, Matt Cutler (a.k.a. Lone) has announced that his next record will arrive via R&S just a over a year after the release of 2012's solid Galaxy Garden. "Airglow Fires" b/w "Begin to Begin" is said to see the DJ/producer "exploring a more considered and intimate sound alongside a rediscovered love of classic hip-hop." As Cutler puts it himself, "I love hip-hop and house music when it's at its rawest. To me, 'Airglow Fires' has that kind of '90s basement vibe to it, where the lines between the two genres are kind blurred." There's no word on whether or not Lone's upcoming 12" foreshadows his next full-length album, but it will be released all the same on July 8.

Ermmmmmmm, dunno if I want more Lone hip hop....

Cassy - April

Heard Francis Harris drop this twice in the past week and it completely slays. It's a few years old at this point, but it's just such a funky track that I had to share it.

That Jamie Grind mix looks rad! Definitely going to take that on my commute home.

Juniper 45 min mix Boiler Room 5/02 Listened to this on my way to work the other day and it's absoultely, balls to the walls, fantastic. Highly recommended.

Black Dog, hell yeah. Was listening to that the other day; didn't grab me quiiite the same as the Liber Dogma series did, but I wasn't 100% focused on it at the time, so it'll be getting further spins in the near future.

Is that Calibre album streaming anywhere or do I have to... "find it" on my own?

Half hour preview for Robert Babicz' new album The Owl and the Butterfly. I need this NOW.

Are all of his previous albums good or is there a certain one I need to hear first?
I first got onto him via Dark Flower (Fever remix) and got his album, but I recall there were only two or three other tracks I liked on there. Also, when I saw him live, he played Dark Flower, but (IMO) the vastly inferior Joris Voorn remix :/

If you can, in the very least try and get an uncompressed copy of the version of Dark Flower I linked to... it has some of the best production I've *ever* heard.

He's also super switched on when it comes to producing, too. There are numerous YT videos of him talking about production and stuff, REALLY knows his shit.

On that note, I'd love to hear some more of that kinda chill, breaky, almost Chicane-esque stuff like I linked to in this post. We need more of it, it's just so damn unpretentious and doesn't try to sound overcomplicated or do anything new, it just does what it does fucking *well*. And with no extraneous parts in the track that don't add anything to it. That little breakdown around 3:45 or so... it does things to me.

Just had a flick through that Babicz preview as well, really digging some of it. I bet the quality on the final release will be off the charts.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised by the Black Dog praise on here, considering where they started to where they are now, I can't find much appreciation for their recent work. I mean I don't even hear Ken Downie in there much anymore. It sounds like the Dust boys stole the keys to the car. They are definitely trying to fit in with the run of the mill contemporary Techno. Nothing nearly as imaginative as the original line up.

New Lone is surprising....not sure on the Hip Hop route again, but we will see. This was always a good Hip Hop track by him.

And I am absolutely loving this atm. (Even has an old Black Dog vibe to it)

It is! Shaneus, the sun is out, nothing wrong getting a little cheese in this thread also! ;) 'Bangaday' reminded me a bit of this one:

Bent - Always (Ashley Beedle Mix)

One of my alltime favs.
That's really, really nice... kinda groovy, sounds like it'd be a good gay anthem (obviously not being derogatory there, in case a mod thinks otherwise!).

Edit: On thinking about it, it actually has a bit of a Paradise Garage-esque vibe to it.

Yeah, gayness to the max from early 00s, love it. Has that early house Ce Ce Rogers etc vibe to it.

Speaking of big 70s/80s big gay disco tracks, I really, really can't go past this ever (mind you, it's a recent remix, but still... it's an excuse to post it):
Farley Jackmaster Funk feat. Big Darryl Pandy - Love Can't Turn Around (Lifelike remix)
Was so fucking tragic... I'd been a fan of Lifelike's remixes for a while, saw him live at a festival... worst mixing ever. Played the above track, but mixed out before the killer buildup and drop THAT HE FUCKING PRODUCED. Ugh, frustrating as shit.

A promo version of Disclosure's Settle is 'out there' for anyone interested. Apparently only missing the first track ('Intro').

Listening to the new Little Boots album, and it's quite a departure from her poppy, hooks galore first LP. Quite 90s sounding in places, very minimal and electro. First track is a belter and one of my favourites.

Little Boots - Motorway
You're a good person. Really respecting what she's doing with whatever she does. The one you posted is Smalltown Boy all over.

PS. This popped up on Kavinsky's FB. I thought it was a bit rad:
