You want nu-skool or party breaks? Nu-skool's pretty much dead in the water AFAIK; party breaks is very diverse and fun, but it ain't straight up breaks.

Plump DJs lost the funk, Freeland has been pretty quiet, and the good guys like Tayo and Krafty cuts are all a few steps away from straight up breaks now.

I'll dig through my collection and see if there are any breaks sets that I can recommend.

Well, it's been decided:
torq-conectiv-vinylcd_pack_v2008.jpg

I've seen this in action many, many times in a club situation (thought it was SSL at first) but seeing what can be done and how cheap it is, I'd be stupid to not get one.

Been skimming through some stuff and pretty much all of it is old. Sorry dude.

Freeland just released a new track which I actually am loving quite a bit; check his website. Reminds me of the Plumps a bit *Pours out 40*

I mean, don't give up on party breaks, it's pretty good stuff. For the most part it's everything syncopated under the sun and when it's done well, it's done REALLY fucking well.

Sat in for Sinden last week and killed it, was dropping old school jungle tracks in the middle too.

Tayo's cool, he's taken his old school roots and thrown in transition to everything from dub to the tropic stuff really well.

I still have his Essential mix from 2k7 that I rock. Need to update that soon.

cheap is sometimes a bad thing, and I've heard mixed reviews on the torq. any reason you didnt want to go with SSL?

Sooo if you guys have never heard of them I highly recommend this duo EOTO.

D/L one of their shows, every one is completely improvisational. Listen to it streaming here:

http://www.archive.org/details/eoto2007-10-09._sbd_flac16

Since they are improv, the songs can be 20 minutes long. Most songs get better as they go along. :D

Put it on while you browse. I know several people who are following them around in NE US, apparently they are gathering a following and rightfully so.

For what I primarily want it for (rocking out at home) it's far harder to justify $800AU over $350AU. It would be different if I hadn't seen it in action over the weekend (and realising I'd been rocking out to it for ages thinking it was Serato) at one of my local hangouts. Scratching seems fine on it (though I'd never use it) and looping and effects seem accessible without being overly complex.

What were the bad things you'd heard? I had a look and struggled to find anything dealbreaking about the Conectiv package.

I've started listening to them got couple of EP's ordered and their latest album coming, also got Zomby - Where were you in 92 on order.

If you enjoy Zomby (he is amazing) check out Actress (owns the label that put out WWUI92) and Girl Unit.

I've heard its more of a feel thing between SSL and Torq. most people that have tried both prefer SSL. SSL does what it does really well and really solidly, there isnt a whole tonne of stuff going on like there is in torq which can sometimes take away from things. I see torq as sitting more on the traktor side of the fence as far as gimmick versus purity goes. most of the features in itch feel distilled and important whereas other software seems to have a little too much going on.

the other thing is the ubiquity of SSL. go anywhere or book any gig and everyone knows what you mean when you say "serato". its just really easy to track down and set up gear when you play out. might now be a huge deal to you at the moment but you might find yourself wanting to switch down the road. if you are just looking for the SL1 box and you dont need the turntables/CDJs and mixer you might want to track down a used unit.

just my 2 cents though.

Hm, fair call. It's the whole deal with name recognition again :(

Quick question: if I'm mainly just wanting basic mixing abilities and perhaps the ability to record my sets on the same machine (though it's not a necessity) would I be missing out on much by going for the SL1 rather than the SL3? I just don't want to get jerked around if there's some awesome feature that's introduced down the track that doesn't support that box.

Oh, and do either of the Serato's have looping built in? That was one of the things I liked about the Conectiv kit. Edit: Think it's done with the new s/w.

And damn, now reading some of the Serato features again... damnit! Still way too expensive here in AU compared to the Torq alternative :( ($900AU vs $350AU)

SL3 is completely unnecessary IMO. basically you are getting the 3rd aux channel and the sound card upgrade, but its all gravy. best to excel on 2 channels and then add a 3rd later in your career. some of the biggest acts in the world play with the SL1. they hold their resale well too so if you ever do feel left high and dry you can always sell and upgrade. also, if you are an ableton live user, there is a product in testing called the bridge that allows you to integrate (drop loops, samples or live instruments) into SSL.

looping is built into serato, as are FX, sampler, midi mapping... etc. there's a lot that can be done before you feel any limitations. as far as recording goes, if you are using a mac, you can just run the mixer output back into your computer and record with something like audacity (free) but there is no internal recording unless you have a TTM57sl mixer (with SSL built in)

keep in mind, scratch live is free, and as far ad I can tell there is only about $100 difference between Torq conectiv and a used SL1. I dont mean to make you doubt your decision, but from personal experience, I have picked 2 things that were off the beaten path (iDJ2 and VCI-300) and eventually regretted it.

You're definitely right on the last point... the times I've deviated from what's proven/mainstream has ALWAYS backfired (I say as my Behringer USB DJ controller gathers dust :lol ). Only time I haven't regretted it is with my Ecler mixer. That shit is fucking golden.

Oh, from what I can see, there's about $250AU difference b/w used SL1 ($600AU) and a new Torq. Maybe I'll just hold off for a bit, see what the v2.0 software of Torq does with the same number of inputs/outputs as the SL1. If it's negligible then I'll jump on Scratch Live.

Sucks that I just bought a second-hand lappy in preparation, but I suppose I could always use it for porn in the meantime ;)

Edit #2: Found one for $500AU. Hopefully the ad isn't out of date! Anything I should look out for?

Not much to look out for besides the usual abnormal wear and tear. You might have to buy some control vinyl but that won't be too expensive. just get the guy to show you that it works and you should be good.

SSL really is world class, plus it's new Zealand made :D

Vinyl I'm not actually too fussed with... it's more the CDs I'm concerned about (though a DJ friend I believe has about 7 or 8 1200's so if he has the cartridges/stylii I might borrow a few beat up ones from him).

From what I understand, majority of people selling their SL1s are bedroom rockers who are upgrading to SL3 anyway and plus, there's nothing that can really break with a Serato setup that can't be replaced.

Scored a second-hand SL1 on eBay for $455AU. Incredibly stoked! Well... moderately. Sort of came to the conclusion that I'd get Traktor Scratch Pro on the train (which can be had for $577AU shipped from eBay) but thought I'd set my limit for the SL1 to exactly $100 below that to see what happens.

Either way, I'll be digital DJing sometime within the next week, and all for the cost of around $700 (including the laptop).

I just found out that ReBirth is freeware o_o I'm downloading it right now. I'm so excited, I haven't putzed around with it in years.

I also can't stop listening to Matthew Dear's 'Black City' and 'Asa Breed'. Completely infectious albums. His Fabric 27 mix as Audion is also presently destroying my mind.

Serato SL1 get! Laptop is waiting for me at home so will get into it. Guy I bought it from is heavily into jungle so I think he was a little disappointed when I told him it was going to be mainly for minimal and electro :lol Super nice guy though, burnt me all the latest software, gave me the receipt and two sets of vinyls (the originals and the V2 ones) and chased up the registration to whitelabel.net as well.

Apparently I have a long road ahead organising all my music, too (especially considering that I lost all the stuff I burnt to CD around the start of the year so will have to rip everything again). Ugh. But hopefully that will result in me putting together some kickass retro mixes for y'all :)

Verdict on Serato: So fucking awesome. I don't know whether I'd be able to handle the equivalent on MIDI/USB-only controls (Itch, Xponent etc.) as they never really felt like I was DJing, but this... it still feels real. Helps that when I learnt how to mix I didn't have a CD player that had BPM on it. Response is perfect, even on a $230 laptop :lol

But having all of the music right *there* is awesome. Gonna take me forever to organise though :(

Visiting another festival this Saturday, with Troy Pierce and Gaiser Live, should be fun. :)

Say what? Which festival? I was supposed to see Richie Hawtin and Heartthrob (amongst many others) this weekend at Electric Zoo, but I couldn't get off work. Lame! Heartthrob is coming back for Halloween, though, to play a warehouse party, so I'm pretty stoked for that!

I've been disappointed with Troy's sets for the last few years. I saw the M-nus crew when they rolled through Chicago a few years ago for the M-nus Anniversary tour, and Troy opened with a horribly flaccid experimental set. Heartthrob, Magda and Gaiser fucking SLAYED, though, but I had to leave just as Richie got on although I'm sure I didn't miss much :p

Seeing the Clone crew at Bunker this Friday. Hello?Repeat Soundsystem are doing an eight hour set, I'm so excited!

glad you are liking it. its super solid.

tips for organization: go through and gain all of your tracks so they are as close as possible but not lighting the red light on the virtual VU next to the track info.

another thing that I do is I color all of my tracks. you can do this by clicking the grey circle next to each track and giving it a color. I assign based on song vibe, heaviest being red and lightest being light blue. it really helps to remember what a track is like, or to pick tracks in a set without any nasty surprises.

lastly, I pull all of my "would play" tracks into a master playlist, and then use that playlist to either make smaller sets for a particular night, or to pull a color out for different sorting options.

good luck!

Troy has been hit or miss for me the last few years, some sets were awesome, some were too experimental like you said.

Curious to see what he plays this saturday.

Awesome, who else are you going to see? Joris Voorn, Aeroplane, Steve Bug and John Digweed are who I'm looking forward to, and of course the Chems.

I just hope Earl doesn't rain in on our parade :p

Didn't realize this thread was this large when I made that other Electronic Music thread. What a waste of time that was. I blame it on being buzzed as hell.

That being said, anyone going to Monster Massive on Oct 23rd? Good line-up:

Carl Cox + Moby + John Digweed + Gareth Emery + Axwell + Armand Van Helden + Felix Da Housecat + Steve Lawler + Pete Tong + Judge Jules

Eh, screw Moby, but I'm down to see Diggers, Lawler, and Helden. Felix Da Housecat's GU album was awful, so gonna skip him.
