I see it as everyone is leaving electro and fidget style house behind and moving on to dub, post-dub. Mainstream is starting to catch up though so I would imagine everyone will be sick of this new movement within 2011 and be back to the big room stuff by 2012. 2010 was the year of the bass. Dub, grime, UK base, tropical is really at their peaks right now.

Case in point, one of the biggest albums dropped this week was James Blake's Klavierwerke. Next week will be Darkstar's North. You wouldn't have seen such a mature sound coming from the scene two years ago.

all i know is that i am mostly into many forms of house. i feel a bit alienated by dubstep. i can listen to some of it and enjoy it but i can't love it. and i've been to shows for it and i just don't even know what to do with myself at them.

EDIT: not to say that i've closed my mind from all electronic genres. i dabble in chill-out a lot and some drum and bass.

Likewise. I really, really don't see the appeal in it at all. I guess that comes from a background of where I like music that I can dance or just listen to, but I've not found any dubstep that allows me to do either.

I can see where you're coming from with Switch and that ilk as well... I don't know if you were really "around" when that music was at its peak (mid-05ish maybe?) but I just remember that when I was far more a clubber than interested in DJing, it was the shit I wanted to rock out to. Nostalgia plays a pretty big part in how I rate older tracks, too :lol

yeah i definitely wasnt really apart of it. i only really discovered electronic music in 2006 and i started with hard trance. i'll have to check out switch's back catalogue.

I just like music :lol if it can get stuck in my head/ make me tap my feet/ sing or atleast learn the words I approve.

Again Btkadams your mix Autumn mix is damn good and rather refreshing, it will be on my ipod for awhile!

What are some tracks that you would recommend off North?

If you get a chance (even if it's just on YouTube) check out the stuff I mentioned on the last page. It'll give you a fair idea. I'm not sure you will (it's hardly subtle or well produced :lol) but it's awesome in a "club banger" kinda way. That Red Hot track I mentioned is ridiculously good, too.

On another note (to everyone) I'm thinking of putting a mix together to see if I can get a beer garden gig at my local. Basically need to give them a reason to put me on (rather than just because I'm in good with the place) so I'm looking for good quality retro mashups that would work well regardless of if it's in a retro-ish set or a regular club set. Any ideas for sites/artists I can check out?

I'm also hoping to keep it not *strictly* the above style, with some laid-back Ibiza-ish cruisy French house (think Love Sweet Sound by GA, most Lifelike tracks etc.). Any ideas for that sort of music I could hunt down would be unreal as well :)

<3 you all!

Have you listened to Moombahton before? New genre created by Dave Nadda. It is dutch house slowed down to 105bpm. You might enjoy it.

i actually have. i dig some of it and don't mind it being at that bpm, but i find it pretty gimmicky and uncreative that some people just slow down other people's dutch house songs and call it their moombahton mix. when people make their own moombahton it can be pretty sick though.

Don't be sad... sadly, the vast majority of DJs I've gone out of my way to see especially (or get really excited about) tend to be disappointing. I've seen DM play before (mind you, this was a year or two ago) and he just wasn't that exciting.

While we're at it, anyone know if Timo Maas is any good live? He's playing in Melbourne this Saturday but because everyone I know who'd be interested work in the industry, I'd be going by myself :/

Was it a live show or unhooked, though? They are completely different gigs.

it's not worth that kind of money. its a great show (i saw it a few months ago) but seriously not worth more than the original ticket value. he will be back again. you gotta just be more on the ball about tickets if you like the guy!

he's not really my taste though, i prefer the harder live shows of mustard pimp and jfk.

Actually, it kinda is, depending on what other stuff you like. Each of the gigs have a bunch more headliners.

Thursday the 28th has Q-Tip and Busta Rhymes
Friday the 29th has Die Antwoord, Erol Alkan and Afrojack
Saturday the 30th is Unhooked with Kaskade, Calvin Harris and Pete Tong.

$250 for deadmau5? no thanks. i wouldn't pay that kind of money for anyone. maaaaaybe daft punk but that's because they never tour. deadmau5 comes to my city like once a year at least. those headliners seem cool but 150-250 is festival pricing, not a 3 act show.

Timo Maas tickets are just over $23AU here this Saturday. Fucking Pumped.

Rukes: It was at a festival, so I think it was a live DJ set. Given that he didn't really deviate far from his own tracks (which majority of the crowd would've been happy to see anyway) and at the time a lot of them had a similar vibe, I found it boring.

Well definately not for after market prices, but if you can find them for the normal ticket prices, that's different :)

What do you mean by dub/post-dub? Dubstep? Basic Channel-esque dub techno? Glad to hear people are moving on from electro and fidget house, the style was getting pretty long-in-the-tooth.

So new Daft punk album on Dec 6th, well its from the Tron movie but its as close to a Daftpunk album as you can get.
some of the songs i expect to be pretty housey judging from some leaked clips so i'm excited! i want to preorder it off the official site and get the poster but it isn't shipping to outside the states.

Any recommendations you guys can make to me? The electronic groups I'm into are:

Daft Punk
Digitalism
Deadmau5
Justice
MSTRKRFT
Crystal Method

More recently I've been listening to Daft Punk and Deadmau5's house style songs rather than the dance/pop ones.

The Jamie XX "Far Nearer" rip from XFM - This fucker will destroy clubs the world over with those fucking steal drums and warm swells.

No shit, THAT'S what's blowing up in clubs right now? SMH. Maybe I'm showing my age, but when did shit like that become more of a club banger than something like this? (first example of a real drivey club track that I could think of)

If I heard that Jamie XX track in any club in Melbourne I think I'd run home and cry.

(PS, while on James Harcourt, check this shit out. So amazing it hurts.)

There are all types of clubs out there and not all club tracks need to be big room bangers. =)

And to be fair it is a radio rip. ;)

I just can't picture that being played in any club... bars, sure. Afterparties, definitely. But... eh, I dunno.

Nothing against your taste, though! If you like it, more power to you. It's just that I'm usually open to most kinds of electronic music but I cannot for the life of me see where the appeal of dubstep lies. Much rather rock out to some well-layered minimal or cruisy progressive electro house :)

PS. If you ever, EVER suggest a track again, can you preface whether it's dubstep or not? I paused all my downloads to stream that Youtube vid sufficiently only to find what sort of music it was :lol

Its not to bad actually..

Wouldnt hear it any club around here, maybe in some up in London though.
