thanks for the useful feedback guys. to be honest, consistency and proper building have always been my weak points. I tend to think of my music more as the melodies and the beats of individual tracks and mixes between them than as a greater concept of a "set". I tend to mix things that sound right and flow properly between two songs so what I start with never really matches how I end. That being said, I'm getting better at it. My early sets were a bit of a mess, going from bangers to disco, letting lyrics tromp all over each other. Last year I set out to change that a bit by organizing my library better. matching mood feels more natural to me now I just have to work on the progression of the energy of the mix as a whole. I appreciate the critique though, its nice to keep trying to get better.

here's where I source a lot of my tracks for those that are interested.

Ugh, anyone recommend any good Ableton 8 tutorials? I'm sure once you get the hang of it it's awesome, but until then, fuck it's frustrating!

Joelseph: that new Plastikman track is fucking KILLER. Never thought he would make a track that good.

Saw Ben Klock and nd_baumecker last night at Bunker. Was a monster of a night, both rooms were banging, but if you've heard one Klock set you've heard them all. Baumecker tore the place to shreds, though. At 2:30, the power died, the system got completely overwhelmed and knocked everything out. It was really epic and awesome for about 5 minutes, until everyone realized it was going to take another 20 minutes to get the party running again. It was fucking ON once they did, though. Amazing party, and hugely inspirational for what I want to do with my own work (<3 baumecker).

One of the best recent mixes, imo:

sub2front.gif

Since being in San Francisco I’ve watched my native Pacific Northwest begin to flourish as place for forward-thinking dance music. Just recently Nguzunguzu duo graced stages in both Seattle and Portland, and New Years will see a visit from uk producer and co-owner of the Hessle Audio label Ramadanman. These two artists are among 2010′s best new producers, each with their own take on what it means to be related to genres like house, uk garage, or r&b.

As much as these artists deserve our brightest accolades, so too do the promoters and DJs who play host to them. Often these individuals will make little to no money, play to empty crowds, or be driven from their venues due to any number of unfortunate circumstances. One such outfit of bass ambassadors is the Bubblin’ crew located in Portland, Oregon. Made up of DJs Ben Tactic (of the Tactic production duo with co-producer Brent Tactic) and Lincolnup, Bubblin’ has single-handedly injected faith into the hearts of Portland clubgoers.

This mix, from Lincolnup, is one that reminds the west coast (and the world) that U.S. cities are representing for a new world order of international, inter-webbed, and intergalactic sounds that undoubtedly point to the future. Mixed live, Lincolnup blends everything from Tribal Guarachero hero Erick Rincon to equally teenage Northwest-native Cedaa‘s Juke inspired rhythms.

Check Lincolnup’s tracklist and download the mix from the Bubblin’ Soundcloud below. And keep an eye on Bubblin’ and the Northwest-family in 2011 as their ripples will surely continue to be felt.

I used to always be so intimidated by DJing, but after playing around on my friend's Serato Scratch Live setup just once I've gotten to understand everything so much better. I've been practicing on my own on just my computer with a mouse and Traktor Pro (3.0, bah) ever since, but it's actually incredibly easy. It's really hard doing fancy things with just one hand (a mouse, nonetheless), but it's not impossible. I've mostly just been practicing my beatmatching and bringing the tempo up slowly. I'm definitely understanding now why learning first on a vinyl exclusive setup is really important, because then you only have the basics of A-B and simple mixer effects (low kill, etc.). I definitely feel really spoiled being able to loop a section with the click of a button, or to be able to throw in a low-pass filter with said click of a button. It's easy and simple, but due to that I'm not learning the way it truly works (such as the way one would re-create such a setup with physical effects pedals and such, and what input affects what).

I will say this, though: having a mixer makes ALL the difference in the world. I'm currently torn between saving up for the Traktor Kontrol S4, or getting two turntables and a mixer + Traktor Live. Both seem to be at about the same price point, but the S4 is definitely way more transport friendly.

Serato is indeed awesome... I just like how they've gone for the less bells-and-whistles so you can just DJ.

However, I'm finding more and more people are moving away from the computer-based stuff (if they're DJs, not actual producers/artists who do their shit live) because of the lack of convenience. I'm sort of leaning the same way, just keeping Serato for use at home where I can audition tracks, drop them in a crate then when needed just burn all those tracks to disc. Seems like it would certainly beat carting around a laptop and fucking around with control discs and rewiring mixers.

Still don't regret buying it though, just don't expect it to be super-convenient if you want to start doing gigs.

On that note, SSL 2.2 is in public beta! New drivers for the SL1 box (not sure if it would make any difference) plus some other shit.

sounds cool man! id like to learn how to beatmatch and use traditional equipment. when im done school i'm going to definitely invest in some vinyl turntables and stuff.

on the topic of effects, what are the standard effects for use when djing? i'm using ableton so i could probably do a bit more than a dj that beatmatches but what are the standard ones? i don't want to cheese out a mix when i play out haha.

Another Monster that I can't talking about: Jacques Greene from Canada

Shrouded in mystery, 21 year old Montreal native Jacques Greene represents a new breed of House producer whose influences range from slick 90s UK Garage, classic Chicago House and glossy RnB. With a single release forthcoming on London tastemaker imprint Night Slugs, LuckyMe are very pleased to be able to present this new EP; the biggest collection of work to date from this much hyped producer.

Made entirely on a wide range of analogue synths and original drum machines in a loft studio in Mile End, Jacquesʼ sound is both forward thinking yet steeped in the traditions of good House music. Our opener ʻThe Lookʼ is a slick, anthemic take on classic UK garage / US house , while the jackinʼ shuffle of tracks like ʻHoldin Onʼ & ʻGood Morninʼ keep it moving with a natural, rolling bump so often lacking with todays dance music. It gets deeper too, with the reverb drenched vocal melancholy of ʻTell Meʼ wrapping up the record in the after-hours club with your ex girlfriend. This is the track which was so greatly regarded by Mary Anne Hobbs that it earned a place on her final BBC Radio One show – standing as one of the select few examples of ʻones to watchʼ in her absence from radio. We consequently have moved this release forward to meet the demands of folks mailing the label about him.

With upfront DJ support from the young leaders of house at Rinse FM: Bok Bok, L-Vis 1990, Ben UFO,Oneman & Braiden, as well as Hudson Mohawke, Floating Points, The Blessings and Mark Flash - Jacques Greene is announcing his arrival in fine style.

Another tastemaking 12” EP debut on the LuckyMe label sealing a good 2010 for our team.

Listened to this a bunch, feel like I can form an opinion now:

Not knowing how professional you are, I'm quite pleased.

Like any mix, there are certainly roadbumps, and some songs I straight up hate, but overall, I find your song selection to be your standout quality.

Work could be done on the actual mixing itself, but again, I have no gauge as to how critical I should be.

Glad you liked it ( I think :lol )

I'm not a touring DJ or anything. Been spinning for close to 3 years. I just play a couple gigs a month in my hometown. I try to sit down and make a mix once a month just to share some tunes I'm into and to keep my profile up.

Some mixes may have been a little uncreative I'll admit, but my goal overall is to make it blend smoothly and not have any jarring transitions.

I've been completely obsessed with that last song. VGM aside, it's Robotaki and it's knock-out amazing.

edit: sorry if some (a lot?) of these are old songs, i tend to have a fixation on 2008-2009 ~_~

Are any of you planning to do best-of compilations now that the year is almost over? I don't tend to follow electronic too closely outside of a handful of specific people/acts, and this is always a nice time for me to catch up on some of what probably passed me by.

I'm also hoping to find a good dance-y remix disc to send to a friend with his other Christmas presents, so maybe I'll take the time to go back through this thread and pick out some choice tracks.

I'm planning to do a 2+ hour mix before the end of the year, but it won't be a ''best of'' or something.

The Nu-disco mix I posted a few posts above has a lot of choice tracks, most from the year (a few older ones though thrown in). As for compilations, this year was pretty weak IMO... but I really liked Hernan Cattaneo: Renaissance the Masters: Parallel. The first disk was very innovative in its presentation... druggy, slowed down, yet extremely atmospheric. Progressive house atmospherics crossed with a nu-disco tempo.

Shit yeah! Reboot is playing NYC next Friday with Luciano and someone else, but there's no way in hell I'm going, because it's at Pacha and it's a horrible venue.

On the topic of "best of 2010" mixes, I've already started to put something together. This year has been pretty great for music. I'm really happy with the shift away from minimal, but it still holds a dear place in my heart.

So, problem: Tonight, Magda, the absolute love of my life and favorite DJ, is spinning with Marc Houle. At the same time, Mister Saturday Night is spinning at a roller disco. Magda is $30, MSN is $5. I love Magda quite dearly, but roller discos don't really happen all that often. What do I do!?
