Dude this Todd Terje EP "Its The Arps" is blowing my mind. I loved his stuff in 2011 immensely but Swing Star Pt 1 and 2 are operating on some mystical level going straight to my core. His music is so simple and effective.

I didn't even realize that reviews were already out on the Todd Terje. I didn't even realize that he recorded the EP using only the ARP2000. Seriously good disco songs here though. I mean I really thought this would be the year that Trance or more of the crazy mash up everything would make a push but Disco is not completely dead. I think RA prefers the opening song (it takes a little too long to build up for me) but I'm partial to the endless Arpeggio's and mellow drums of Swing Star Pt. 1 (that shit cray). The director of Drive should switch up music production to Todd Terje for Ender's Game because this is like Disco music for space flight.

Disco ain't never gonna die, thank the lawd.

And yes, Terje kicking off the new year the right way. I was beginning to wonder if January would be a complete bust.

So was it true that killing off disco was a conspiracy between radio and record companies because they relied mostly on singles?

If you wanted a legitimate answer to that, get Morro in here, haha. If anybody here has the maximum truthiness on disco, it's him.

A mate actually put me onto Terje's edit of Boogie by KC et al a few weeks ago. So, so, so good.

I actually think (hope) there'll be a resurgence of this sort of music this year. A lot of the tracks that made the overall 2011 charts on Beatport were deep yet funky and soulful house tracks, what I feel (IMO!) precursors to the faster, more upbeat, more "discoey" tracks like what Terje releases.

Also, I've been listening to a LOT of Paradise Garage-era music (courtesy of a Twitterbot that regularly posts names of random tracks from the era) and that shit just doesn't age.

Gah, that post was a lot more unfocused than intended. But I hope you get the gist of what I was going for ;)

Yea personally I never really got tired of Disco, even after the Italians Do It Better/Sally Shapiro boom a few years ago. Especially after the Drive Soundtrack sorta opened up all of my friends eyes. A few of my friends were looking through my library and were like "is that THE Chromatics that were in Drive?" I had to explain that all of that stuff got cred years ago. I wouldn't mind a resurgence of the super slow long Trance mixes that used to be amazing when I was 16. This past year did have a least a few singles that some critics mentioned sounded like Trance.

I actually listened to the Digweed Fabric mix last night and even though that is not what I would call Trance, it reminded me of all of the Sasha/Digweed mixes that used to blow my mind. The word Trance has gotten a bad name, but the same thing happened to Disco when punks ravaged the name. I have a habit of going back to stuff I loved as a kid. Last year it was 90's R&B. I listened to so much early Mary J. Blige and Aaliyah albums. LOL.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
^ some good taste there, see5harp. I was listening to an old trance mix I made in 2001 the other day and was getting nostalgic. There are a few good trance tracks coming out nowadays but a lot of it lacks the energy, overdone supersaws and acid lines of the older stuff.

I really really miss the Sasha and Digweed era of prog house, probably my favorite music scene of all time... Although Sasha released a Mixmag cd recently that was pretty good, he now plays stuff like Jamie Jones/Maceo Plex/Scuba... so it's funny to see how even nowadays me and him are on the same musical plane. Digweed Fabric mix was a big eye opener for me, as that was the turning point when the dark, deep and tribal prog started declining and minimal/tech/electro house was starting to boom.

Gotta check out that Terje EP, he's one of my favorite producers.

Anyone remember that 15-minute mix thing joelseph started many moons ago? I made another one! Whee!

http://soundcloud.com/erkr/erkrdemo It's actually 20 mins, but whatever. Jammy disco jams.

Ooh, this is really cool, love the opening track and especially the one @ 12 min!

I've been working on a new mix myself, pretty much boshy prog and electro house (think Avicii)... I'm gonna submit it to the people who run Otakon (anime convention) to see about playing at their dance party this year. Don't laugh, it's actually a good gig, they've got a great setup and some fairly big local names on the roster (mostly breaks, this being Baltimore and all).

djtiesto: yes, the Digweed Fabric mix is what initially brought me back to dance music after abandoning it for the awesome indie rock scene in Omaha during the early Saddle Creek years. Although I generally will always be a fan of minimal music, in general, there was something magical about those Sasha and Digweed mixes.

Shaneus: Thanks grabbed it and will listen to it after the niners hopefully pull a victory.

see5harp: This mix may be of some interest to you. At least, the first 15 minutes or so. It gets a little more nu-school in it's vibe but the first quarter of that mix is definitely disco-flavour :)

Yea the mix got into electro/dubstep/whatever you wanna call it but immediately went back to disco and is hopping around a bit now. Electronic music is so messy with labels and genres anyways. The main thing for me has always been to keep it interesting and most importantly keep me dancing. Thanks for the link.

Should be going to this on saturday, then next week James Blake!
Spending too much money going out!! but looking forward to seeing Darksky and Girl Unit.

I made a rough draft for a mixtape in GarageBand back in March 2011 and never got around to polishing it up (in part because I still don't know how to use Ableton well enough to really do it justice). I listened to the mix again yesterday and decided it was worth sharing anyway.

Blondes, "Water" (Bicep remix) is pretty slick.

Even though it mostly just collects their fantastic 12"s from last year, I'm really looking forward to Blondes' LP since there's a pair of new tracks and second disc of remixes. Anybody who missed out on those 'duality' releases (Lover/Hater, Water/Wine, Business/Pleasure) should consider the LP pretty much an essential purchase.

Also, this Sandwell District mix (consensus seems to be that Silent Servant put it together) is wild.

This is nuts!!! This is a really, really nice treat. It reminds me a lot of Trap Door International Mystery Mix 2, but with more of a Suicide feel and less 60s psychedelia. The links on there are dead, but I have the mix if you want it, it's a fantastic mix.

Also, peep this mix by Peter van Hoesen he did for Promomixes a while back. It's very similar in style to the SD mix, much moreso than the Trap Door mix I mentioned. Peter van Hoesen Promomixes 006

Carlos Peron - Breaking-in (Milan)

Just saw this, thanks man, I thought you'd like it, haha! I've been playing the helllll out of "Ur Oskunni" and all of Terje's stuff in my sets as of late. Can't wait to rip out "Inspector Norse" next time I spin!

Can I get a couple of recommendations?

My entire history with electronic music started with hearing an Apoptygma Berzerk song somewhere then expanding out from there via Last.fm. I know a lot of futurepop, industrial, and dark electric groups like Icon of Coil, Combichrist, Panzer AG, Covenant, VNV Nation, Suicide Commando, Funker Vogt, Frozen Plasma, and some others.

But what I want is more stuff like this fripSide track (stop laughing anime-gaf):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_B-hM8A4b0

Fast paced, upbeat, and I love that style of synthesizer. When it comes to singers, though, I'm kinda picky. I like lighter, breathier singers, or singers that just fit into the music really well. For example, Suicide Commando and Funker Vogt's singers are somewhat extreme, but fit their sound perfectly.

On the other hand, I really liked Levels by Avicii until the singing started. Then it just got terrible. The singer was great, but not for that style of music.

Here's some other, similar stuff I like, but none of them have that same pop structure, so they end up being too long winded or don't really end:

Any suggestions?

You probably already heard of him/them, but a friend put me onto Apoptygma Berserk quite a while ago and I definitely didn't hate it. Depending on my mood, actually quite liked some of their songs. May be worth checking out?

Good aint it! Kicking myself for not knowing about that whole night :( was back in October I think. Caribou does not look like what I was expecting thats for sure haha

Richard H. Kirk - Reality Net

Takes me to another dimension. So mellow.

I'd really like to check out more Richard H kirk solo stuff but he has like a 100 different aliases so it's a bit daunting.

Check Ishkur's guide to electronic music. It's outdated and has plenty of errors but it should give you a good starting point.
I know nothing about at trance so I can't really recommend anything else.
