The Official Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution Thread

Is there a civilopedia in this game? Can't find it.

Also, $30 for the DS version isn't bad. Just a bit shocked with how toned down CivRev is.

Yes for the PS3/Xbox, no for the DS apparently. According to IGN:

The DS Difference
Most of our Civilization Revolution console review holds true on DS, but the portable port is even more simplified: It lacks the helpful Civilopedia, which educates players on much of the game's minutiae. But the easy interface works pretty well on the DS touch screen, keeping the game's less-intimidating spirit alive even in miniature format. The biggest compromise is with the overall map -- you'll struggle to get a sense of the layout of the world scrolling across the DS' tiny screen, making it more challenging to strategize accordingly.
I assume you can use buttons to control the game too, right?

Yes, the buttons are done in hotkey style fashion. B to pass a turn, Y to fortify, X to activate the unit's special ability (like settle or make an army)

AFAIK GOTW question, DS has the exact same map as the 360/PS3 version.

I just won my first domination victory on the 360 version, now I'm going to try a DS game.

The clerk at Best Buy thought I was nuts buying the same game twice. :lol

Brewer game just ended, looking forward to heading to bed to play some CivRev on the DS!

One thing I dont like about the DS version is the 2D sprite art has hella dithering and looks worse than Age of Empires.

It's really old school graphics, to be sure. It's working for me so far, though. It feels a little claustrophobic compared to the 360 version, but that's understandable.

I had 1 match I played though to the end, and had really bad lag and studdering slowdown for 2 different instances of it. So much that even presses of a button were not recognized unless I kept hammering down the button. Maybe I had too many buildings in the queue or something...The slowdown bouts would last for about 5 minutes each.

I'm hoping this is not a recurrence or is something that can be fixed with a patch, cause it really zapped a lot of the enthusiasm I was building for the game while playing it.

The rookie level was no challenge at all (no enemies attacking me). Gotta bump that up next game.

This game sure has a lot of content to it, with all the different races to play as...

Man, I played my first game on Chieftain as well and was attacked by all 4 Civs throughout the game. They kept asking me for tech or gold for a limited amount of turns in peace but they definitely were aggressive. Luckily they aren't very smart with what they attack with on the easiest setting. :p

Starting around 10:30pm last night, didn't finish my first game until after 1am this morning. What a fun game they've created here! I certainly miss some things from Civ4, but really you can't argue with the streamlined way of playing they've come up with here.

I played as the Russians, and was around 10 turns from getting a Cultural victory when I accidentally got a Domination one instead (didn't realize I was attacking the Zulu capital :lol )
I love how you can form armies, but I wish there was a way to set waypoints for units being built (if there is, please let me know!)

By the end game I mowed over everyone with Rifleman and Cannon armies, with Fighter planes helping out (their 2 rounds or I crash thing sucks badly, though).

I didn't get bugged much by the AI until I developed gunpower, then they all went off the deep end, demanding access to it or they'd attack me. I only every got attacked just a few times, and the stupid AI threw single Legion units against Rifleman army units, so there wasn't much of a fight.

I should be on again tonight, feel free to send me an invite!

As for WPs I know I got a tip saying how to do it during the demo. I thought it was R3 (PS3 version) but I could never get it to work :/

I'm guessing they're in there in some way I'm just too retarded to figure out how to make them work.

is there a way to keep playing the game despite you (or another civilisation) achieving a win condition?

I like to keep playing until I wipe out the other civs, and I didnt see an option when starting a new game to specify types of victories that are enabled. This is 360 version, single player.

I'm pretty sure you click down on the left stick if you want to set a waypoint.

I believe I read that there is not (someone in a previous post, I think, lamenting over this). I could be wrong, though (and hope I am!).

Man, I totally missed the waypoint thing in the tutorial. I'll check the manual when I get home. Glad it's in there!

I picked this up during my lunch break yesterday from Best Buy. Had to have a guy get it from the backroom for me. It was on the cart of new games although I am not sure why they hadn't pushed it out yet.

I played two games against the computer just to get used to the changes from Civ IV on the PC. My first game was a straight up domination victory with the Americans. The second game I played as the Russians. I wiped out the Spanish and Egyption capitals early and culturally assimilated their other cities. I took over the outlying cities of the other computer the same way leaving only their capital. I could of won using any the victory conditions, but I went for technology. I think I am going to need to increase the difficulty a bit.

I am really liking this. It is not nearly as complicated as the PC version, but in this case i think it is a good thing since I think that level of detail wouldn't work well on a console with a controller.

I do have two questions although. Is there an auto-explore command I am missing? It is annoying moving around my ships in the early game. Also, is there any way to upgrade units besides building Leonardo's workshop?

so I finally played the DS version for more than a few minutes today. It's the absolute perfect toilet game for us office drones, although I sort of lost track of time and ended up sitting on the can for 30 minutes!

Quick question, do I need to be connected to the internet to play the Game of the Week? I thought it was just a download or something? My office has no wireless and since that's about the only time I get any serious DS time in I was hoping to be able to download the scenario and play it here.

Do you need the Nintendo wifi dongle to connect the DS to the Internet? Can you just connect to a router?

nope, you can connect to any wireless access point

Dont you hate the fact that your legs just seize up after about 10 minutes?

Same thing happened with Advance Wars.

EXACTLY! I spent so much time in the bathroom with AW: DS that people thought I had dysentery or something.

Once my feet start to fall asleep I know it's time to quit.

I'm completely new to Civ and I played my first game last night. I'm playing as the Mongols and I'm well on the way to a domination victory (Chieftan level), but I feel like I'm missing something.

The Egyptian AI has built a lonely city in my territory and I was trying to wipe it out, but they have a strong Archer Army defending it. Any unit I send in (Warrior, Archer, Catapult, Legion, Calvary) gets eaten alive, only making the defending army stronger. Am I doing something wrong with the combat? I have riflemen and cannons now, but it doesn't seem like it should take that much overkill to defeat a bunch of archers....

It's a strange thing too...

I started using the bathrooms in the basement, just so I wouldnt be disturbed by guys on my floor realising I was in the bathroom for 25 minutes...

"Google, where have you been?"

"Meeting...on...the...ah...5th floor!"

park a defensive unit next to the city, then only attack the city with strong offensive units like the cannon. dont attack with defensive units like pikeman and rifleman.

when you attack the city, you can see both your unit and enemy units's relative attack and defense values, along with the modifiers (eg chieftan level adds 100% I think)

build a barracks to make your units stronger (veteran by default)

if enemy has city walls, you can try and take them down with a spy

longer term, keep researching your science and send in air units or tanks

so on the DS does anyone know if you have to be online the entire time you play a game of the week?

Ya I'd like to know how Game of the Week works on DS as well. Are there leaderboards? How do we know how we rank, and check the ranks of other people?

I remember hearing on one of the CivRev podcasts that there aren't any leaderboards for the DS GOTW, so there are less restrictions (for example, you can pick your own civilization, which you can't do on the 360 or PS3 versions).

Given that, I wouldn't think you would have to be online during a GOTW game.

yeah, that's what I thought, but I went through the process of connecting (and presumably downloading) the game of the week last night. Oh shit, you probably have to play it without turning off the DS right? I just thought of that

DS GOTW is downloaded via WiFi but not saved on the cart. To save the map for play at a later time you have to start a game and save it on 1 of 5 save lots available.--so yes, they can be saved :)

Some questions:
How does production (Hammer icons) work? - I'd tried putting all my citizens out of work and some of my cities would still be producing hefty # of shields. This is a major change from the PC civ games where I could see precisely which tiles was producing what.

Can units be upgraded? I understand there's no unit upkeep but do we basically keep all our legacy units?

Game of the Week is kinda lame anyway, they only score it on how long it takes you to beat it, so unless you like playing the game from the exact same starting point over and over (kinda defeats the purpose) there's no reason to play it.

yeah, but isn't it a new scenario every week? That makes it worthwhile in my opinion. I doubt I'm good enough to rack up and high scores so I just like the new thing to play every week.

I don't think it's a scenario per say, but just a preset map and starting location, instead of the randomly generated one. This way, you can try to maximize your score and victory time with exactly the same start.

Hasn't changed so far AFAIK, maybe it will now it's out in America.

I think out of work citizens produce a certain amount of production, so that's probably your problem, you also sometimes get +1 production bonuses for being the first to discover certain techs.

I think Civ 4 is like this as well (first bit at least).

There is one wonder that upgrades units, if you plan on building it then your Warrior Armies can turn into tank armies and..well, you can imagine. If not then Clicking the right stick disbands the unit.

I played last night as the Chinese. Ended up losing to the Zulu via Domination. I was too busy warring with India and Germany to notice. I was about 5 turns away from a nuclear missle when I lost. The only thing I have to get used to is the fact I need to use a strategy and stick with it. I was just everywhere doing all kinds of crap.

Also, is it better to have a couple of cities or a ton of them? I had a couple of cities that I really didn't develop just as "bait" so enemies could try to take them over, while my 2 big cities were developing big time. I need to sit and play this game all day soon. I played one game for about 3 hours last night. I couldn't put the controller down! Great game here.

I was the Greeks, won a 3 hour series by economic domination. Man I had some kick ass tanks that sent old Abe packing every time he tried to step up to me :D I was also 3 turns away from the manhattan project. I was going to have a fatman with Mao's name on it.

I just build cities where ever I see a good space for one, 5 well placed cities will do far better than 20 poorly placed ones (This is why the Mongols suck imo).

No point building them as bait either, doesn't cost your civ anything to develop all your cities and get them to the point where they are far more easy to defend.

No PS3 trophies but at least we have this:

I think 4-5 cities is probably the sweet spot. Of course, you'll be picking up more if you are going for a domination victory and winning.

There's also the achievement where you have to win with only 1 city on King difficulty.
