The Official Sonic Rush Thread

I'm on the 2nd area and I keep falling to my death in bottomless pits that I don't foresee...grrr....

Never played the Advance games but this is sure sounding like I heard they were. Doesn't feel like the original ones at least so far :\

*edit* Now I play as the cat girl and I'm doing well on the 1st stage and drop down for a top running line...to fall into a bottomless pit...:(

I read that some of the Advance titles feature Boss fights that break away the arena walls and have you racing for survival and chances to strike, that sounds a lot more interesting.

Advance 2 had running bosses. They suck. Advance 3 bosses are probably the most original I've seen in a Sonic game. Advance 1 bosses are standard fare.

They brought back bottomless pits..... :(

I hope they aren't as annoying as they were in the GBA games, I guess they shouldn't be if the physics is more accurate as SMD says. I should get back to the game, only did the first area.

Eh, bosses in Sonic Advance 3 were a mixed bag. The first "Hammer" boss was pretty good, but the Jack-in-the-box boss was just pure shit. Advance 3 was still hit by the suspending-over-death-pit level design, but was also struck with a horrible Act-Select levels, and an incredibly broken Tag-Team mechanic.

I just want to say I fucking hate this game. If this was back in the day where you could return games, I would be taking this back tomorrow.

I bought it because everyone was saying it was a revival of the 2d sonic that was great on Genesis, but no...this is not the game I used to play. Every goddamn life I'm doing awesome and getting to the very top line of the course and then I make one mistake and in NORMAL SONIC GAMES I would fall to the middle or low line/course of that level and keep going, but in this I just miss one thing and I fall from the very top...to an ENDLESS PIT OF DEATH.

I've game overed so many times on this game I'm just not enjoying it. Sure you can go slowly and carefully and memorize the layout and survive, but Sonic was about the rush of going insanely fast and jumping over things as they appeared. But no, the rush kills you here. I mean the game wants you to do tricks, but when I do an air dash and start flipping I over shoot an unseen platform ahead of me and fall TO MY DEATH.

There are many parts of genius and excellent fun in this game, but it's like FUN FUN FUN DEATH FUN FUN FUN DEATH.

I dunno if I'll ever have the will to finish this. I guess I'll bring it along with Mario Kart while camping for the X360 but I have a feeling if I play this I'll throw my DS to the ground and break it :(

:lol

While the pits are still annoying forcing you to memorize a bit more then the Genesis games, I still think this is much better then the GBA games and leaps better then SA3. I don't find the pits to be THAT bad, but I do end up losing my coins a lot do to enemies in my way. :lol It's not bad, not at all, but it's still not close to where the genesis games were at yet. I hope they remove the pits from SR2, other then that I find this game fun and I can see my-self playing it a lot more if I didn't also have Mario Kart sitting right in front of me. :)

It certainly is better then Shadow the Hedgehog, that's for sure. :D

Can't win em all I suppose. I haven't found myself struggling with repeat pit deaths, if I mess up a particular section I do find the game eases me onto an alternate rail equally as pliable as before. That's not to say pitfalls don't happen, but more often than not I can instinctively notice the error on my part when they do; mistiming a rope swing, or nitroing through a floating platform zone for example. Nothing that can't be immediately corrected on next opportunity.

You are never tasked with making leaps of faith, and the game truly endorses abusing the nitro button and trick system to keep velocity pushed. I haven't felt betrayed by this logic in the 6 zones I've completed.

It's a shame to hear such a negative response, I've not experienced such a visceral Sonic game in over a decade, but do what you gotta do Bebpo if it isn't gelling with ya.

I've died many times on this game(and that doesn't happen often with games) but I think I only died as a result of a 'pit-death' 2 or 3 times, usually because I'm being careless.

Yeah, bottomless pits have never been so annoying to me in any platformer. I have never played the Sonic Advance series though.

I sort of wish it would save after each Act. (i.e. you beat Act 1 of a Zone, it gets saved, and if you get 'Game Over' in Act 2, you can begin at Act 2 instead of having to play Act 1 all over again). Oh well, at least it's better than back in the day when progress wasn't saved at all, but then again I never had bottomless pit frustration.
So far, ALL of my deaths have been because of bottomless pits.

Maybe I could put the game on easy... haha... but I doubt that would reduce the number or size of bottomless pits, so it would be useless.

EDIT: After posting this I beat 2 zones without a problem. I'm fine with the game now :lol

so what's the GAF verdict on this game? well Bebpo hated it and he had valid reasons. I was gonna buy it but if the game is as frustrating as bebpo puts it, fuck it.

Don't be deterred by weaksauce gamers.

The general opinion seems to be it's only frustrating if you're careless. Therefore, Bebpo sucks :P

I think aside from Bebpo the impressions are positive, the pits aren't nearly as annoying as they were in SA3. But that's just what I see. :)

This has been my #1 gripe with this game so far. They focus the game so much on speed and throw in these little traps every so often and its kinda lame. I want all stages to be like the E3 demo :(

just bought the game loving it so far, music is great and I agree with bebpo about the bosses I mean 8 fucking hits? that's retarded, the bottom less pit don't bother too much though.

just cleared the second zone and holy shit this game is awesome I love the vertical view the game brings, I hope other game uses this feature because is awesome.

So I picked up Sonic Rush this morning. Played it all the way home on the train (6 hour journey, lol). I must say I seem to like it a WHOLE LOT MORE than when I played it at TGS. My mistake was to play as Blaze at TGS, whom I discover now is utterly shit compared to Sonic (hover am useless).

I'll agree the bosses are waaaaaaay too dragged out and very linear. Although people seemed to hate them, I really enjoyed the running bosses from Sonic Advance 2.

The speed of this game is pretty damn good, and I seem to <3 the special stages for some reason (entering them is awesome, glad they finally got it right). It still lacks the depth of the Mega Drive classics, as its still very much an evolution of the Advance series. Level graphics are good but... could have been so much more.

The game is a bit of a bitch as well, difficulty wise. The Aerial Limit level is a bit unforgiving with those very rubbish 'jet platforms' that explode when touching a wall. I didnt enjoy that bit at all.

I also realise now how uncomfortable the DS is to hold and play for ages. This is the first game I've played through in a long slog, and god damn, finger cramp.

This is a great game, and I hope its inevitable sequel is even better. I'd get rid of Blaze, she's shit, and just get some very pure Sonic, Tails and Knuckles action going on, bringing back the multiple paths of lore. Get some much better bosses in and more... 'animated' backgrounds (the lack of parallax disturbs me a bit in Rush).

The music alone is ace. I physically need an mp3 of the Special Stage music, as it has burrowed into my brain and will not leave.

I don't know, it doesn't seem like people remember much bout S3&K. It wasn't exactly a walk in the park you know. Not as cheap as the Advance games, but it still required a level of caution to play through without dying. Flying Battery and Death Egg Zone say hi :)

I...what is this final special stage. Is this punishment of some kind? This....no...I can't!

Its mind blowingly hard. Mines, everywhere. Time to lube up my finger!

Interestingly, who uses their finger for the special stages, or the stylus?

Edit: All beaten :D

wow this game is awesome just beat the third Zone that was a cake walk after Zone 2 but Zone 2 music was awesome that I liked when I kept dying :lol

I just picked up Sonic Rush over MP Pinball and THAS, and after two zones, I share some of Bepbo's sentiments. Sometimes launching yourself off a ledge results in something good, and sometimes it results in a bottomless pit, and there's often nothing to indicate which will be the case. It's difficult to get into a comfortable Sonic-2-like groove because of this, even on the topmost rail. I'd much prefer just falling down to a more difficult bottom line.

That said, I love the sense of speed and the soundtrack. I'll just have to be deliberate at first and then blaze through the stages once I learn them. Just have to fight that instinct...

Overall a pretty fun game, but I have no idea how you guys are praising this as a return to the Sonic of old. Really now. And message to Tails; "STFU thanks".

If anything, Sonic Rush made me wish Sega did some kind of bizarre "franchise swap" for a generation of games. A reformed Smilebit making the next Sonic game would really be awesome, and have Sonic Team actually try and prove they can make a successful game without relying on "look we make sonic games lol" (god bless the saturn era for them actually trying!).

I thirst for the OST to this game, I only just recently obtained the Ollie King OST, so I'm on a major Naganuma kick...

I don't think anyone is, SMD hit the nail on the head with his explanation.

Yeah, Zone 2 is harder than Zone 3, but that's not unlike Sonic 3, where the second Level was underwater too. Imo it's the best Sonic game in a decade and holds its own against the Mega Drive games. Bonus Levels are the best pf every Sonic game imo, because it's georgously playable. Sonic Rush is waaaaay better than Sonic Advance series.

loving the music of Zone 5 :) soundtrack is awesome I may actually buy it.

btw to the people playing. How many S-Rank have you gotten?

Are all 2d Sonic games this difficult? I'm only in the second area and I've already seen the Game Over screen two times. I blame it on the water. Why do you need air, Sonic? WHY?

Just getting through it isn't thaaat difficult, but Sonic needed to get air under water since Sonic 1. Thanks to S-Ranks Sonic Rush is the most difficult 2D Sonic I know (and I know every Sonic game ^^). It's as difficult as Sonic Adventure 2 I think (incl all A-Ranks)

Went to the EB at Pacific Centre, downtown Vancouver to pick up Sonic Rush and the guy said it's not released yet??

On my way home, I stopped by 7-eleven where I looked at a flyer for Future Shop in the local newspaper. It said:

"Sonic Rush Nov. 24"

OMGWTFBBQ.

I ended up (finally) picking up Resident Evil 4 for ps2.

This isn't freaking Sonic. I never remember all the endless running and the cheap deaths. Sonic 2 had much more platforming.

Fun game, best sonic in a while...but...it's not...Sonic's heydey again.

Finally came out here and I picked it up.

Well, thus far, it's a lot of fun. Probably the best Sonic title is quite some time. It feels great, looks great, and is a lot of fun. However, it is still lacking "something" that made the Genesis games so special. The level design reminds me very much of the Advance titles (particularly 2), unfortunately. The physics do feel a LOT better, though, and the music is actually really awesome (outside of the first level). I was a little suprised with some of the slowdown, though, but it's usually not a problem.

I'm still making a few mistakes here and there while playing. On the whole, it does feel more like the Genesis games...but it still isn't there. Holding down while taking any sort of major loop/ramp/whatever causes you to lose speed rather than gain it. The jumping feels a bit too "quick", as if you are snapping down onto the platforms. Sonic also appears to weigh a bit less and almost sort of floats down from the air. When you take a large ramp, for instance, you do not fall as quickly. It feels especially wrong if you are hit during this moment. I do like the new dash function, but I felt that it wasn't necessary with the proper rolling from the previous games.

I've noticed the bottomless pits and have died a couple times on them already. I agree, it is a worthless addition that should NOT have been in a Sonic game. The punishment for falling out of the top line would be to end up on the bottom and have to work your way back up. These pits KILL the pace as you could be going along perfectly only to have your life cut short by one of them.

OK, that sounds like some complaining there, but I'm such a fanatic when it comes to the old Sonic games that I can't really help it. Really, I'm loving the game. :)

I don't hate it, I just hate dying :P

When it's good it's good. But everytime I die it just kills the pace and makes me not want to keep playing. I tried playing a little more yesterday but after a few more deaths I just went back to Ouendan and Mario Kart. If you're an awesome Sonic gamer, more power to you. I'm a rusty Sonic gamer who hasn't played a 2d sonic in 5+ years. I thought I could just jump in and have fun like the old days but I just find it frustrating.

I tried playing with Blaze, and she controls like shit she doesn't have the jump and press R button attack which is very useful with Sonic instead she just hovers, which makes playing with her very frustrating.

I haven't died too much because of bottom less pits, at least no until I reached Zone 6 :lol I stop playing there becuase I got hooked with DQVIII

My verdict as of now is: 8/10 awesome soundtrack, great level design apart frome the bottom less pits, good bosses I don't mind too much the dragged boss fights.

I just picked this up. It's really good, and I was surprised out of my wits to hear that Nagenuma did the soundtrack, because the man is a pimp and it never struck me he'd do something for the Sonic games and replace their garbage ska fixation.

Unfortunately the DS was designed by monkeys with its FUCKING RECESSED EARPHONE JACK. Seriously, what the fuck? I can't plug in my awesome headphones, they won't fit.

got this game today. holy FUCK. i was expecting something about as good as sonic advance 3 but i got this fricken awesome sonic game. way better than the advance games. with all the talk here of "its not classic sonic" i was worried. and theyre probably right. its not classic old school sonic, but it definetly is sonic reborn. loving it so far.

I don't like the death pits, but what I really don't like is the random enemy that you can't see until you've already hit him. Maybe I'm just getting old and losing my gamer reflexes, but I constantly get nailed by bad guys because I'm moving so fast.

yep, agreed sonic games were better without voices...and blaze
The voices aren't bad, though. I love the engrish Sonic (Junichi Kanemaru) and don't really mind the others either. It's not as if they are used often or anything.

What I do have a problem with is the generic sound effects. They used the Genesis soundchip brilliantly back in the day and the sounds of hitting enemies, springboards, powerups, etc. seemed to crisp and distinct. The sound effects here are all a step back, with only the rings still retaining quality on par with the originals. The music rocks, however (though the sample quality could use a serious boost). The first level had a boring track, but everything else has been absolutely awesome.

:lol at all the weaksauce in this thread.

This...is the best Sonic game ever.

Yeah.

Yeah, I said it.

I didn't say it at first because it was still new, and usually the freshness wears off.

Now that I've had the time to adjust to the newness of the game, it's clear. Now I'm good at the game, and have the zones all memorized, it's a fucking blast just jamming through the levels, trying to maintain a high score. The pure adrenaline is overwhelming, you just never want it to end. My only complaints about this game are Tails/Cream's annoying voices and the fact that there's only 7 zones. Everything else is gold.

Better than the Genesis Sonics.

No.

Its good, but: No.

Edit: Guess I should probably explain why youre wrong rather than just outright deny.

The Genesis Sonics all had a hell of a lot more design work put in. Each zone with its indiginous robot animals, the fantastical zones and bizarre backdrops parralax madness with checkerboards and great varied area's and lots of stuff going on in the background (For instance, the Fire Eggomatics that appear halfway through Angel Island, and turn the entire zone into an inferno). The gameplay of Sonic 3 and Knuckles combined, with 3 varied characters to play through with, 2 with wildly different level paths. Turning Super Sonic and Super Tails/Knuckles in stages the ultimate achievement, and just the general level of artistic energy in all the games.

Sonic Rush is a good game, and i'm glad Dimps are far better at producing Sonic games these days. However its vapid backdrops and complete lack of new interesting enemy design outside of bosses brings it down.
