Some more detailed info on the Pro Pinball: Timeshock! machine.

And the first whitewood, without inserts (to test shot flow etc.):

They should do Pinball Circus. I have NO idea how that would look in Pinball Arcade. Rocky & Bullwinkle would be nice too. I been wanting to play that one again.

Not actually that important
What a deal! Grabbed S1 on PS4 for just €13 and pennies instead of €30... Glad I waited for a PSN summer sale :)

Too bad that while the dark setting looks awesome on most tables, it's also barely playable and I wish you could use custom balls with a lit-up one or with a led inside it for better visibility.

Also the audio quality is still SHIT, didn't I read in here it was supposedly fixed?

Really? Where did you read this? I'm sure last year they had full qualis leading up to the finals. No big deal because it's my birthday this weekend and I'm pretty busy anyway, but would've been great to have a buttload of content to catch up on.

That's the chatter on pinside https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/papa-17-games-revealed-1/page/4

Sounds like they *might* do some qualifying coverage but its kind of a spur of the moment thing? pretty weird, past events have been covered pretty heavily throughout from what i remember

I'm hoping someone has a decent answer for you because I'm looking as well. @FunWithBonus is the only one I've found that I kind of like and its hit or miss

That's really weird, especially considering they're literally at the home of PAPA. Hell, even Pinburgh had full qualifying and finals :/

As someone who donated to the PAPA.tv KS, I demand they broadcast every minute of the whole weekend!
Not really, but only doing the finals is a bit average.

So, while checking out the qualifying for PAPA 17 this weekend, I noticed a link to some dude's video that was related to pinball. Turns out he has a Kickstarter so he can do some stuff:
The purpose of this campaign is simple. LethalFrag would like to play Pinball, live on his channel, for everyone to enjoy. Since playing the PC game Pinball Arcade, so many have come forth showing their love for timeless classics. Help us bring this dream to life, not just for ourselves, but for all those among our community, The Dapper.

I'm a little confused, because that's basically what PAPA.tv/PAPA.org was setup for/does... but even stranger is that despite setting a $5k goal, he's already hit $15k and that's after less than a week!

So yeah, be interesting to see what comes of it.

A warning to those active in the community who also subscribe to pinball podcasts, be wary of looking at the title of the latest Coast 2 Coast Pinball episode. If you've been avoiding finding out who the winner is, you *must* also avoid your podcast feed as well! Just putting it out there.

It's made even harder to have to avoid it because while the first six hours of the finals are up, the last two or so aren't for some weird reason. Not that it matters to me anyway :/

Same with PSN Store.

Is Pro really worth it?

Does PSN have PS3/PS4 cross-buy? If not, is there a way to buy on PS3 and get a discount on PS4?
What's the difference after the discount? If it's less than $5, I'd go for it... even if only for non-family mode in Scared Stiff (you enable it via the operators menu that can only be accessed in pro mode).

Well, shit. Came fourth in a new local pinball comp last night! AC/DC (Luci) and X-Men LE, both had their issues (bell not detecting on AC/DC, same with Wolverine on X-Men) and a lot of the switches were nowhere near sensitive enough (especially on the AC/DC slings) but still managed to make the finals. Bombed in 2/3 of those (managed third once, rest I came last) but still happy with where I finished!

From the best player there, got some compliments that he'd seen me play in leadups and was impressed, but could see nerves getting to me during competition, so that gave me a bit of a boost :) Now I've made finals once, hopefully that'll ease some psychological demons from here on in. I'm confident now that I don't really need to practice at all with my skills being quite good, I just need to calm the fuck down :/ (Any tips/advice is welcome on that front!)

Aw, fuddruckers. Just bought Season 1 on PS3/Vita with the 50% sale hoping the PS4 discount bundle would have a further discount, but it didn't. Bummer.

I didn't get a chance to watch PAPA last week but I'm going to check out the archive. Nick Zendejas, who got 6th place is one of the Denver crew that I play against often.

I finally have all of the machines for the ps3 tournament. Right now, I'm in first place but it won't last. I think I'm done for now since I'll end up in the top 10 percent no matter what.

The last two hours of the tournament aren't on Twitch for some goddamned reason :/

So I just made a post in the PAPA 17 OT:
Video of the finals is up on PAPA's Youtube channel! This includes the ending that I may have posted about being cut off on their Twitch channel, so you can relax with the knowledge you'll be watching the entire thing.

Even if you don't watch it all, I strongly recommend at least watching the last hour or so. The final main game (before a playoff for third on Wheel of Fortune) is Metallica, and there are some *insane* skills on show.

To be honest, kinda "bleh" on this one. Though apparently the artwork will be actual art and not shitty Photoshop-esque crap a la most Stern machines. Why can't we have machines that have a good sense of humour and are fun? Everything's too damn serious:

Star Trek
Mustang
Tron
Avengers
X-Men
Avatar
LotR

Notable exceptions are Metallica and AC/DC (to an extent) and the cartoon licenses like Family Guy and TSPP. Seriously, get some Muppets in there, maybe a Lego one while we're at it? Even a Guardians of the Galaxy one would at least be a little funny.

Well I made top 10 percent so I'm moving up to Silver! lol

I think it's funny that I used to really bag on Pinball Arcade but as soon as they put in tournaments I get all the tables and play it a bunch :p

The Annual Dory Hill Pinball Campout is 1 week away in Black Hawk Colorado.
There are bigger tournaments in the year but this one is everyone's favorite.

Dory Hill is a really nice campsite north of the casinos in Black Hawk. Its has a bunch of small cabins to stay in. Everyone brings a pin up to the camp site and sets it up on the porch of the cabin. We spend the weekend playing two rounds of PinGolf (18 holes each day) and a side tournament. It's lots of fun to go, 'camp' and play but it's really an excuse to have fun and get really drunk. Last last some teenagers from town came and tries to steal the keg and I won a bunch of money, then lost it, playing blackjack.

Any news on the X1 version of TPA? I saw that Zen's Pinball FX2 is being featured at MS' ID@Xbox PAX booth and I know that Zen's game was chummier on MS platforms than Farsight's, but I have to wonder if the early talk about August/September release is now not very realistic at all.

This is from the latest update nr.21

PS4 Update
We will be launching Season Two shortly after the XBox One is released. This is because of a condition Microsoft requested for exclusive content. We must launch Season Two on XBox One before we can launch on PS4. Everyone will be notified when their tables have been unlocked!

So much for saying "it's up to the publisher" when these things come up. As it's something many seem to shout when trying to defend their company of choice.

It's pretty clear that it's the console manufacturers that try to screw us all over with this kind of shit.
I mean, come on. If they even bother to put pressure on a company like Farsight with a game such as the Pinball Arcade which is pretty damn niche to begin with, it really makes you wonder what kind of shady things are being done overall.

I'm already not happy with MS even though I have tons of 360 games and even 4 systems last gen, but this kinda stuff just pushes me even further in the direction of never wanting to support them with a single cent ever again.

Pretty sure this was made known a month or two ago. I guess I see the issue, but it's not like PS4 hasn't had the de facto next-gen console exclusive for ten or so months now and the wait between S2 on X1 and PS4 is, AFAIR, thirty days or so. In any case, Farsight is the one, I think, to choose what is temporarily exclusive.

Yup haha I will the same way as someone who is looking at machines for a family home environment. Muppets would be a really good one, as would Lego, Simpsons or gasp yeah right Disney.

As far as I'm aware the only reason that it's been out for this long on PS4 and not Xbox is that MS didn't allow them to publish the game themselves while Sony did.
Since their publishing deal went kaput somehow, they were locked out of getting the game released on MS systems at all.

Now it seems that after all this time MS has finally allowed them to get a new publisher to put the game out on 360/bone and thus it will be coming out "soon".

So it certainly has nothing to do with Sony securing a 9 month window of exclusivity or anything like that.

Also if MS requested exclusive content, what else could Farsight have done? Make certain tables exclusive to them to get the release dates to match up? Now that would have been even shittier.

Any hope the Stern Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines Pinball table will get added to this? I played that in person and honestly its a table worth owning in physical form if you can find it. No dead zones, good lanes, tons of bonuses, has the missions from T2 plus some new ones, has Video Mode stuff, has a cannon skill shot on the backboard to enjoy, and you can REALLY ramp up score and bonus balls given how many Million plus multipliers you can nail on this table. Theres a 50,000,000 Super Jackpot thats actually pretty easy to setup too. I had trouble with the table because I needed to leave but try as I might I just kept nailing free balls like mad.

Here's a vid for those curious about it. I just need to know...has it been mentioned yet as a hopeful addition or is it (like the Stern Avengers Table) just one of those licensed tables I shouldn't count on.

No mention of it at all, I'm afraid. Doubtful as it would've been mentioned in like with T2 if ever it was to IMO.

I have been playing so much real Pinball recently that I hardly can stand Pinball Arcade at the moment.
Please update physics, even 15 year old ProPinball has you beat. Wait, did you say you use one Physics engine for every platform? Well, yeah, that could be a problem.

At least the DX11 upgrade supposedly comes out with the XBone, so at least I won't be staring into an unlit mockup anymore.

*sigh*

Went to Pacific Pinball Museum yesterday in Alameda with a friend and it was a ton of fun. We got there around 1130 and had to head out by 330, which I thought wouldn't be a problem but we were having so much fun the time really flew by and I think we could have easily spent a few more hours there. 15 bucks for the whole day of machines on free play (except the handful of new Sterns upfront unfortunately, but there was an Iron Man in the museum itself) and well worth it considering how well maintained everything is. Coming from The Addams Family at work, which was a janky Frankenstein monster of parts, it was a joy to play this one. Gorgar and all the 70s and 80s pins are incredibly restored as well, but of course being a DMD fanboy I spent most of my time on TAF, Iron Man, and Creature from the Black Lagoon. Even got to try out stuff I never would otherwise like Robocop and BttF, both of which were surprisingly fun (Robocop especially).

Next stop is Pinball Museum in Vegas in a few months.... Man I want a pin bad. Although playing Metallica in a more lighted and open area w/o mods I wasn't quite as impressed as I was at Arcade Extreme. TAF is such a beast when it comes to fun modes and gameplay (yeah I know the high-score strategy is pretty boring, but I think that's true for most games). I actually enjoyed Iron Man more than Metallica based on my play yesterday but might have to do with the atmosphere -- Iron Man was in the darker room with all the other games whereas Metallica was up at the front of the place right in the direct sun. Really need some level of darkness and noise to cultivate the proper atmosphere imo.

The "pinball museum" element of some of these places is kind of interesting to me. You go through there and really maybe 1% of the customers care. They just want to play fun games from any era (fun does not necessarily just mean DMD or modern btw -- there was a mechanical baseball game that was really popular, as were some of the solid states). But the collection of old machines takes up a huge amount of space.

People definitely comment the physics engine on the PS4 is improved. And each table's physics are tweaked uniquely, so some tables fair better than others.

Still, for The Addams Family, imo, it's in their best interest to demo it in a video or at least say they will bring it to the PC with the DX11 engine enhancements. I know it's coming (in theory, someday...), but I'd just like to hear it again.

It's been quite a few newsletters since they've even mentioned the PC build upgrades... I guess something after the XB1 build hits (sorta like PS4 content now), but it'd definitely help them to remind their PC fans supporting TAF kickstarter will get them a build comparable to the PS4 / XB1 versions...

Been wanting to go to the Alameda museum for some time now but I'd need another set of reasons to take that drive up.

The Vegas museum has a very good selection of machines but unfortunately many of them are not in good shape. Even newer machines like LOTR are banged up and missing pieces, and some of the classics have poor flipper action or busted plungers. I suspect they don't have the basic funds required to really have a full-time shop for restoration and maintenance. It's a fair drive off the strip to boot. Still worth going, but hearing how good the machines were in Alameda suggests you should temper your expectations going into Vegas.

Yeah that's what I heard and it's a huge bummer. Again I'm no expert on relative condition but yeah even a lot of the oldish machines like Gorgar were pretty stunning. I don't know how the economics work, but I imagine the rent in Alameda is easily 3x what it is in Vegas so that's a bummer. Also a bummer is that there aren't any good pinball places in the Bay Area outside of SF/Alameda afaik (i.e., South Bay).

I created a thread on the difference in physics between the PS4 and PC, but Mike Reitmeyer commented somewhere along the lines of "they're all the same". I tried to find conditions on the PC version that are notably different to PS4 so I could capture them, but it's hard to do when you're only going on "they just feel different somehow" :/

Interesting, like I mentioned I was just going on what I read (quite a few people commented that)... good to see something official even if it means there's a whole lot of placebo effect going on then. Maybe the better graphics make the game simply look more realistic so people imagine the physics to be better... or maybe FarSight just has their wires crossed about it, I doubt it, but it wouldn't be the first time... lol.

Shaneus

Member
I'm guessing wires crossed. Multiple people in that thread (even a mod or two) have commented on it. I'd say Mike is more familiar with the base engine he's provided for the platforms (or something) and *that's* the same, but maybe the tables themselves are simplified and he hasn't tested those. Perhaps.

With a bump to that thread, maybe we'll get something moving again.

Anyone here know of any word on them making a version of the old DataEast Simpsons pinball game or even the one that came after?

The original Simpsons pinball got me into playing real pinball as a kid.

It wasn't the most impressive or unique table, I suppose -but it was a helluva gateway into the genre for me (and I think a lot of others)

Data East went bankrupt years ago and I think the rights to their games were bought by a Japanese phone company. Not sure how much luck they would have getting the tables. I imagine the Simpsons license is pretty expensive as well.

I doubt the Data East licenses for pinball are in the same category as for their video games. Pretty sure they'll sit with Stern now (if anyone).
