The Player 1 Podcast Topic

Decided to try this one since a lot of people talk it up and I have become kind of tired of how damn jaded Bombcast guys are.

Though I liked the show, these dudes are even more jaded. The few episodes I've heard they shit on almost everything. Not for me, thanks.

Must be a Microsoft fan.

Huge fan of P1P, but I have to partially agree. You don't hate on everything and I'll continue listening, but I feel that the episodes more and more consist of laughing at Polygon articles, talking about controversies and answering tweets. When you mention what games you've actually been playing you seem bored and uninterested, and often skip past games that I personally really want to hear more about.

Mike is exempt from this mini rant of mine. Not because he's not negative, he definitely and hilariously is. But he actually loves a lot of games as well, and is good at expressing it. So there's a balance to the hate ... ;)

It might be that a lot of this is because of the relative drought we're going through right now. But still, Jeff Cannatas mantra of "loving to love things", while probably too silly for P1P, actually makes a lot of sense.

This is also a reaction to the overall negativity that's permeating every part of the gaming world nowadays. Be it twitter, neogaf, or my favourite podcasters and youtubers there's just so much vitriol, genuine unpleasantness and worst of all, apathy -- that I need breaks from gaming culture more frequently than before. Worse, it's actually starting to impact my own enjoyment of games.

Look where loving to love things gets you. Begging for handouts on kickstarter.

P1P pulls itself up by its bootstraps, gets a god damned job and all the cynicism that goes with it. It's easy to think the world is full of sunshine and unicorns shitting moon beams when hundreds of 15 year olds steal their moms credit cards to sustain your deadbeat ass.

Now THAT is some world-class cynicism. :)

Excuse me--gotta head to work now (at fucking six in the morning).

Talking shit about games and Polygon is the most fun part of podcast. Dont listen to the haters and continue hating everything, please.

Haha that's the stuff I like because they take them to task. Its usually warranted, too.

I think on the whole we're pretty positive about games, no? I enjoyed MK8, the Destiny Alpha and play Tomodachi Life every day - I'm pretty sure I like/liked those games. If we were down on anything I think it was that everything's delayed to 2015. But there are many games in 2014 that I will be playing/buying.

I felt the same, recently discovered the super best friendscast which is pretty good about calling stuff out and shooting the shit, while still being very enthusiastic about games.

I think the best thing about the podcast is clearly the repartee between the guys. IMO the actual talk about games has been pretty weak. There's never a drought in games any more, unless you're just ignoring lots of games, it's more likely that they just don't have a lot of game time any more. This is also pretty apparent in that they seem uninterested in anything that doesn't mostly play itself.

You guys can be a little vague when describing games, I'll agree with that argument. Except Phil, who thinks explaining why he likes a games means walking you through all of the systems and character variations of this months Dynasty Warriors.

But...you guys also realize it and almost every week there is a "so we didn't say why we liked this game" moment followed by a "it's...fun. it's fun!"

Yeah, its funny, I seen people accuse P1P at being too positive at times about certain subjects or companies.

Real talk, I miss EGM stories.

I'd love a "Timeline" show where there's a pretty comprehensive list of gaming releases and news for a year you guys were working at EGM, and you all discussed how things went there and had stories about how people felt about things, especially yourselves.

That's an interesting idea. Probably best to pick certain issues of EGM or certain times, but that could be fun to put together.

Yeah, for instance like maybe the whole year the Saturn launched. Pick things worth talking about. I'd love to hear something like that, or even like you said, an issue of EGM - just pick through the whole thing and discuss what it was like at that time and how things looked then and now.

Well now I'm curious!
I stated that I no longer listened to the podcast and I gave a couple reasons. After reading the way I stated my reasons, I realized that I was being the typical "anonymous guy posting on the internet saying mean things because I'm not having to say it to their faces" guy, and I don't want to be that guy, especially considering that you guys actually read this thread.

I'm sure it wouldn't have devastated you or anything, but it wasn't exactly constructive criticism.

While I'd agree you guys don't sound particularly cynical/jaded most of the time. I have to say I found the E3 episode really hard to listen to in that regard.

Like 99% of what you guys discussed (which I use loosely cause a lot was just one sentence or less reactions) was just kinda pointless "meh" or similar jaded responses. Which is totally fair if you guys aren't interested but when that was the reaction to everything is was a bit much.

I think you might have been better served talking about the stuff from the show that had actually interested you, rather than doing a run down of all the stuff that happened. Every other podcast did that. Having you guys talk a little more in depth about what you were actually enthusiastic about would've been way better than a few words about a whole load of stuff you seemingly gave no fucks about.

I think that's a fair criticism, but it's offset by CJ getting a beating every time he's about to make excuses for Nintendo's latest moronic decision or Mike having to sheepishly ask if anyone wants to hear him talk about the Vita this week.

I just can't muster up the ability to give a shit about Tomodachi Life.

Also, even though I think LBP is a better showcase for creativity than Mario Maker currently seems to be, I would imagine MM is going to play much better. Platforming physics and controls have never been anything to write home about in LBP.

I have the same thing with my two year old at the moment, we are constantly watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse season 1 over and over, it was Jake and the Neverland Pirates before that.

Also we got the same design as the Super Famicom in Europe:

But about 17% slower games with big borders :(

Stuff like this:

Puts me in the "this game is totally not a real game yet" camp with Mike.

That said, Mike's reaction to people buying WiiU for MK8 was weird. I mean, if MK8, Mario Brothers U, Pikmin and a strong supporting library (101, Wind Waker, LEGO City...yup, it's awesome MIke) aren't enough I guess that person probably never really had an interest in the system in the first place? That's a pretty strong lineup...of course my purchasing standards are incredibly low. But Mike has a capable PC, a PS4...guess I don't really get what could show up on the WiiU at this point that would make someone say "ok, yeah now I am in" if they weren't already.

Zelda for people who like great games. For Mike? No clue.

Mike is buying a Xbox One for a single studio that makes the same game over and over again (that Remedy game). It just depends on what you're into I guess.

It will play differently. I have never had a problem with the way LBP plays.

There's a world of difference between not having a problem with how it plays and it actually playing well, though. But really, it's not something I hold against LBP since it covers a lot more genres than platforming.

I believe I read or heard somewhere that the way Nintendo develops Zelda games (and Mario, too) is somewhat backwards. They have teams working on various aspects the whole time (dungeons, mechanics) and that the overworld, "story" and everything that connects it all are some of the last things to come into place. In that respect I'm sure the game exists in pieces but they either don't have or aren't ready to talk about the rest quite yet.

Then again a lot of games talked about at this E3 are in a similar boat where we were shown ideas and people sketching things out on products that haven't formed yet.

I've been listening for years but never visited the P1P forums before. But now that I bought mario kart 8 I should head on over and see whats up. I hear there are blog entries about generation 16

I'm with Mike, I doubt Zelda exists as much of a game right now. Every few days another Aonuma thread pops up on here with him saying "What if Zelda featured Zenny? Maybe it should!"

I do kind of wonder how long Nintendo has been working on Zelda for Wii U. The Zelda team put out Wind Waker HD and A Link Between Worlds in 2013 so it seems reasonable to think that the Wii U game is still in a fairly early stage. ALBW was co-developed with Monolith Soft though, so who knows.

They have to have been working on Zelda U since at least mid-2012. Wind Waker was announced in January 2013 and came about after the team had tested upgrading it, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword to HD. It was also heavily outsourced and was completed in about 6 months, so I'm doubtful it had much impact on Zelda U's development.

If this was just another iteration of Ocarina, then 2015 seems reasonable, but it sounds much more ambitious than that, so I think 2016 is more likely.

I don't think we shit on everything. In fact I think we praised every game we've been playing over the past week.

Must be a Microsoft fan.

I don't actually think you are the most guilty party. For the record, I'm still listening, just started this week's episode. For some reason I find you guys entertaining lol. And you started the episode with shitting all over E3 2014! I just listen to your disconnect with (most) games you discuss and have to wonder how much you guys even like most current games, especially Mike apparently. How do you write off Destiny as just Halo + Borderlands? But you win, I will keep listening if only to complain about it on the internet afterwards. Well done :-)

And actually no eznark, I am a Ps4/Ps3/Pc/3DS gamer. Have a 360, but it's been in my closet for the last few years except for brief Gears 3 and Halo 4 breaks. But I don't really get an anti-Microsoft bias on the show, unless you are talking about one or two (or more?) of them not owning Xbox One.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll give it a try.

And I agree, the reason I am still listening is because I actually enjoy listening to these guys, even if (or because?) what they say makes me frequently aggravated.

I hope CJ doesn't feel forced to choose a new theme and cover art from the bad submissions if no better ones show up in the next two weeks. Or maybe they should just do it themselves and say it was a fan submission.
