The Player 1 Podcast Topic

Cool. I prefer to listen (and I've gotten that far so I can), but would've just skipped it if it wasn't clear how far into the game the talk covered.

It should say in the episode description and in the chapter marker - did everything we could so that people would not be accidentally spoiled.

How many chapters deep into Uncharted 4 does the spoiler talk go? A lot of real world commitments have limited my play time.

I noticed he referred to the show as "we" this episode (still listening right now). I'm happy to listen to him on the show as long as his schedule permits him to participate.
This. Ethan is def one of the best guest

Thanks for that, it does. When I read the description I didn't examine it deeper, but assumed that "Ch. 5" might have been a reference to the chapter marker for that discussion, but clearly I was overanalyzing it.

So, uh, apparently that person not playing Doom on video was actually playing Doom on video.

wow you are right.

also i wouldn't really need to use "i couldn't swap my sticks" as an excuse considering i paid too much for a controller and can remap them.

Ethan is an amazing 4th chair.. I really hope he stays on, last couple episode were on point.

In the replies to the last tweet he says that was in response to a different video he links to by the look of it.

So wait, he denied that it was him - and now we find out and he admits that that video IS him playing? That's even more embarrassing.

With that dude it doesn't matter. Empty the dump truck on him every time.

A couple of things about the Uncharted talk:

1) I guess I can maybe see Ethan's perspective on cover shooters for a typical player, but I don't think they all feel the same. I like them, though I don't play a ton of them... but to me the feel of Gears of War vs. Uncharted is dramatically different.

2) I've gotten further in the game, and I think Chapter 8 has -- so far -- the two worst encounters in the game. By far. There's the one Greg was talking about and I also found the first arena-y encounter that happened early in the level was also not a lot of fun. I was actually starting to worry about whether I was going to enjoy the game, because there was the big firefight in an earlier chapter that also sent a lot of combat at you... and I started to think it was just going to be a case of the game dropping guys on all sides of you at all times.

Episode 498: Just the Cowl

This week! More Doom, some more Uncahrted (light spoiler talk through Chapter 16 from 38:01 - 51:18), the Angry Birds movie, dead gamertag revivals, Gran Turismo Sport, Ratchet & Clank, Forza 6 NASCAR DLC and much, much more. Join us, won’t you?

I know the sequence Greg was talking about, but I think there's plenty of room in a game like this to have combat encounters where you can do things on your terms, and also action like that ambush where the enemies have the advantage. In Uncharted hunkering down is usually the wrong answer so when the shit hits the fan like that I just keep moving, hip shooting and getting melee strikes when the opportunity arrises. The autoaim is usually really generous when shooting from the hip, actually, so it almost always behooves you to forgo aiming when you're out of cover.

For me, this is the most fun I've had playing Uncharted because of the combination of stealth, open encounters, and swinging. Every combat encounter involves me first scouting the location, marking enemies (I would wager not a lot of people mark enemies and thus lose track of them), and then I try to take them out stealthily, and if I fail, I can maneuver around the areas quickly, either climbing or swinging, and usually come out on top. And by taking enemies out stealthily, I can always easily grab their weapons and ammo so I'm never even close to ever running out. Previous games I played like a cover shooter, but because of the freedom of movement I'm always on the move and never running out of ammo by staying put.

It's why I really loved the open encounters of Chapter 10 (I think? The one with the jeep and where you cross the bridge) and some of the later chapters, and why the low points (other than the terrible chapter 19 (I think? The one with the things that explode) are whenever combat is inside a building.

As for the story, I really hope there's a spoiled in 60 minutes or something (fingers crossed for Mike) because while I have small issues with it, all of the things I was fearing and obvious potential cliches were seemingly avoided. Sure, that created other problems, but I'm happy with the game concluded. Between The Last of Us and this, Naughty Dog really knows how to stick their landings.

Here's Greg's Extra-Life page for those that didn't get it all in the outro:

I'm still on the late levels of Uncharted (I think four chapters left), but all in all, I think the combat is successful. I think that even if you're struggling, the checkpointing is very generous... although if you die a couple of points in a long stretch of enemies, it really feels like a missed opportunity, because to do it clean would be so much better.

I still haven't come across anything that frustrated me the way those Chapter 8 encounters did... it's really come together. And I felt earlier that the game was transforming Drake into a much more three-dimensional character than he has been in prior games. I really have few complaints at this point (though, like Ratchet, I suspect that while I'm really happy with it, I'm maybe not quite as in love with it as a lot of people)

Should have saved all the EGM talk this week for episode 500 and gone all out

I love EGM stories as much as the next guy, but if Rich is hosting Episode 500, I don't really know if that's the place for it. While they probably see more minor griping from me than plaudits, I think Episode 500 really should be about celebrating the show.... and its exceptional 500-episode run. Let Rich lead them on a little victory lap about what they've accomplished over the past nearly-10 years.

Whatever direction it goes, I'm super impressed by what CJ, Phil and Greg (and others) have done... I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels like they're kinda like a group of friends you're hanging out with. It's crazy when I think about how long I've been listening (it's been nearly the whole run... I've been trying to figure out which was my first episode... if there was only one Dead Pool, then my first episode was for sure one of the single-digit episodes -- otherwise, I only know that I was a regular listener by the time Al Lowe was interviewed -- which was Ep. 18). Crazy.

Dearest Player One,

Am I going crazy or did Ethan's WWHBP (other than the uncharted talk) also appear in an episode from a week or two ago?

I'll use your answer to determine if I should drive myself to the hospital, thanks.

Signed,
A Big Fan

I've completely neglected P1P since being at university. I feel like I need to catch-up on the last 30 episodes before they reach the big 500.

Shame Greg isn't feeling it for Uncharted 4. Need Mike on for spoilercast.

Ironically, last week he complained about getting lost too much in the game and then praised the Clock puzzle which is literally the only time I got the "Need a hint?" prompt.

The complaints about not being able to deal if you lose stealth also struck me as a bit strange since it's actually pretty easy in most cases to run until you break line of sight and regain stealth in the bushes. The game certainly doesn't expect you to "perfect" stealth encounters. It's mostly good for thinning the ranks and getting eyes on as many people as you can before the shootout pops off.

To clarify for Ethan, Oculus and Vive do both insist on 90fps games for VR, while PSVR will have 60fps games, but PSVR also automatically "reprojects" every frame twice in 60fps mode to provide a 120fps output that accounts for head movement. PSVR also supports 90fps and 120fps modes for games with simpler graphics. Neither the Rift or Vive have 120hz capable screens in them.

And when you look at the graphics of so many of the VR games being released on PC right much of it is pretty low-fi and should be well within the original PS4's capabilities. I think on PC the hardware requirements are a bit inflated by the need to brute force poorly optimized experiences built with Unity and variables outside the game's control on an open platform like Windows. PSVR also has the advantage of the breakout box which alleviates the processing requirements for creating an undistorted view from in game.

Thanks I just listened to his section and you covered most of what I was going to say. To add to this, the breakout box is not responsible for the reprojection. That task is handled by the PS4's GPU.

I was a little disappointed by the misinformation in this episode regarding the PSVR. You guys are usually better than that.

Hello. Just thought i'd give everyone a friendly reminder, that if you want to watch the 500th episode live on the youtubes. it's on in ONE HOUR. AND NOT on sunday.

Episode 500: It’s the 500th Episode Special

This week! Rich Grisham hosts the 500th episode special - delving into some podcast history, past vs. present, changes in the podcast and in gaming, origin stories and so much more. Thank you so much for joining us for the previous 500 episodes. Let's make it at least 100 more, eh? At least.

Congratulations on 500 episodes, guys and thank you for the (literally) hundreds of hours of entertainment over the years.

Grats guys. I've been subscribed to dozens of podcasts for years and years, but the only ones I've been listening to longer than P1P are Dan Carlin's.

Congrats guys! Started listening years ago. Sure I've posted this before but in that time I've learned to drive, graduate high school and college, and I've been working professionally for a few years. Thank you for the years of entertainment!

Can't believe it's been 500. Not that I've been there from the start. I dropped in after Dormer (and Dormerbot for that matter). Greg Ford was still a regular. But I don't think I was a weekly listener at that point so I can't really recall that line up exactly. In fact I think once I started listening on a regular basis, Ford was already gone. I kinda wish someone would make a detailed line up of P1P like they do for bands on wikipedia. Guests could be featured as "touring members" and need not be put on the actual timeline.
