Accurate. Friend codes are a more cumbersome system than just being able to add usernames, but I don't find it as offensive as others do.

Who would ever want to remember their own name? I've pushed for ages to have my employer refer to me only by my employee number—not my name.

I think you can just add people through Twitter and Facebook, so please don't waste half the podcast bouncing between the typical P1P Nintendo discussion dichotomy of "blessing in disguise" and "war crime."

I think that's sort of the point though, you don't see people's names on PSN/Live, you see Roughdawg4, xLukk, blackangel887462, nmxwzy, MrUnknown625 and things like that.

Presumably when you play a Switch game you'll see "Mike", "Phil", "Chris", etc. Seems like you can easily add the Chris you just played with, and then you'll know that person by their name.

Sony tried to fix this problem with real names on PS4 but that doesn't work very well and it's not exactly safe either, both in a "safe for kids" way and in a "find personal information to hack your account" way.

Either way the lack of actual online games is a far bigger problem than online codes.

This.

Greg you could always just take your discounted copy of Zelda on Wii U to EB and trade it in with the 2x credit promo (for games put towards Switch software/hardware) to get the Switch version.

The Wii U game should go for $40 to start so you'll be getting $80 towards Breath of the Wild; not too bad for an old E3 order.

I guess we were all justified in having multiple pre orders.

Amazon dropped the ball. Didn't ship my stuff until 130am this morning from NJ. Not going to arrive until Monday and UPS hasn't even picked it up yet. Amazon customer service offered a whole $5 compensation for $475 worth of Switch stuff being ordered. I closed the chat window.

Thankfully Bestbuy came through and I will have a console and Zelda showing up today (considering heading out to Target in a bit to see if there are still consoles after opening).

really enjoying this podcast, only listened to last couple but it's been good so far, a good split between complete fanboy and complete realists when it comes to the switch haha

Sorry, Kev :(

I was kicking myself in the ass for not just buying it at the BB midnight launch. They had plenty! I ended up scoring a pro controller. It feels nice.

I've managed to catch-up on a backlog of P1P episodes in time for the Switch release.

It was a lot of hype to swallow, but I'm ready for judgement day.

No one seemed to notice that Phil referred to Greg Stewart as Greg Ford in last week's outro (or was crediting Greg Ford with creating Generation 16).

You guys planning to talk Breath of the Wild on a weekly basis or are you going to eventually dedicate an episode to Zelda talk after you've all finished it? I think the last time there was a true game specific episode it was for Bioshock Infinite. Maybe it wasn't even specifically a dedicated episode but it did feel like it.

Got lost with the talk about 'hidden costs'... are memory cards, screen protectors and cases considered 'hidden costs' when you buy them for a smartphone or tablet?

Were those things considered hidden costs for the DS/3DS or PSP/Vita? I use to work in retail when the DS lite launched and plenty of parents bought cases for it, it's more secure and some people prefer carry cases for portable devices.

Pro controller is the only real 'hidden cost' and even then, that's only if you have joycon connectivity issues, the joycon grip is not the best controller but it's comfortable enough to play games.

Also, I personally haven't had any ergonomics problem with the right joystick's placement in handheld mode but bigger buttons or better placement would probably lead to a smaller screen or a larger device and I think the current size is great for on-the-go gaming.

32GB of storage is not enough. Even for us who plan to buy physical games, 32GB is not enough for all the saves, updates, apps, demos, and digital-only games that are going to be released sooner or later.

I would say anyone who doesn't buy an SD card for their Switch is going to live an exciting life of having to manage their storage every time they purchase something which isn't going to be ideal.

Greg bringing the truth as usual. Thank you for justifying my decision to get BOTW on Wii U and hold off on the Switch for now.

Ahem...

So I'm a no one, huh? Good to know!! ;)

Yes, I was thinking of you when I wrote that post. ;)

(Actually I peeked through the thread, totally missed it.... although I was really meaning that everyone on the show either didn't notice or didn't acknowledge the slip-up.)

I agree that its needed for a good portion of the crowd, just that calling it "hidden" doesn't make sense when smartphones, tablets, 3ds and Vitas offer the same option.

I agree and personally I don't think it's hidden costs so much as anything optional to the core game experience is not included and has an associated price. Same with phones, tablets, anything portable. Doesn't Amazon's new kindle even separate the battery from the main unit cost? This is not that bad.

At this point I think we'll have too see if 32GB is too little storage for anyone going all-physical. Probably at some point it will be, but it depends on the size/frequency of patching, etc. It probably will be too little if you're playing all your games on Switch. A 64GB card is $22.

To me, even if you just have the base Switch unit, that's all you need to play games. Everything else is optional. It's not like you must buy an additional memory card to play physical games (like w/Vita). A Pro controller is nice but not required. Even the peripherals, though they're expensive, include cables with the Pro Controller and Charge Grip. (Sony does not and I do not think they ever have included cables with controllers. Same for Microsoft.) The Vita AC adaptor is 2 purchases - the plug that goes into the wall and then the USB to proprietary Vita piece. Switch doesn't have anything that brutal. :P

I think they HAD to include cables with the controllers because it's USB-C and no one has those cables (at least this is my first experience with it).

But yeah, it's playable out of the box. I still think the portable nature of it is dubious at best given how big and heavy it is though.

Really? I can see arguing that you don't really need a Pro Controller (though loads of people seemed compelled to buy one). But you're going to say that 32GB is somehow enough?

Come on...

I can't see 32GB not being enough for someone who buys mainly physical games with the occasional downloadable title, unless there are countless patches for the Switch itself and its various games.

I get by with a 32GB Vita card and I have no physical games for that system. Switch games will be bigger and you'll need more space... but again, it's a different ball game if most/all of your purchases are physical.

Come on...

If you stick to physical it is, should be enough for eShop titles as well, shovel knight is 100mb or so, fast rmx and snipperclips are about 1gb each.

Calling it hidden makes it seem like Nintendo is misleading folks with the storage situation, ultimately I rather have 32gb with the option to buy SD storage as I see fit rather than 64gb, 128gb, or the 500gb of the xbox/ps4 and pay a $50 premium on top of that.

It's 2017, there is no reality where 32gb (around 28gb actually usable) is acceptable for any sort of new hardware. Luckily they didn't pull a Vita and do proprietary memory, SD cards are really cheap, but that's still a hidden cost.

I'm still really impressed by the switch and am having a blast with Zelda.

Of course that's possible, but if the Switch is one of your main consoles you have to figure you'll be grabbing some download only titles. There are something like 60 indie games slated for release on the system this year? Are they all getting physical releases?

Plus you've got games like Splatoon on the way. You know there will be downloadable content for that. All of that is going to add up really quickly. And when your starting point is only 28GB (4 reserved for the OS) you'll be cleaning the fridge on a regular basis before the end of 2017.

Eh, I don't know. Splatoon is using less than 2GB on the Wii U, and you can get the card version if that's an issue. For the indie games, how many hundreds of dollars are you looking to spend before you have to buy a $30 SD card? I think I have over 50 games on my Vita's 32Gb card, indies shouldn't be much bigger on the Switch.

I have an 8GB Wii U with a 32GB pen drive attached to it. I deleted a game to be able to get BOTW on the eShop and then had to delete another game to be able to install the update file. It's not really a big deal, I'm not going to play anything else on the system for a while. Before I retire it I'll probably get a 500GB external so I can keep my entire collection on it but for now I'm fine, and the average consumer has far fewer games than people like us.

For me the real problems are having to buy a screen protector to protect the screen as it seems to scratch very easily, and a possible third party dock that doesn't actually scratch the screen (if someone actually makes this). Also a controller if that's needed to fix the left joycon issue. Nintendo charging $90 for a junk piece of plastic that ruins your system is incredible.

The only reason why I think this is an unfair comparison is because Apple still sells 16gb phones.

I'm not even treating the Switch as a home console, which means it can't have options like a 2tb hard drive or wireless headset support.

Episode 539: It Lingers

The hidden cost discussion is KILLING ME.

Greggie Poo: Here are seven hidden costs.
Ethanintendo: Yeah but Vita/Phone/2DS have this issue worse.
Greggie Poo: Okay it still has these issues.
Ethanintendo: Lalalalalala~

I think it's more like this:

NX rumored:

Ethan: OMG, this sounds perfect for me.

Switch released:

Ethan: OMG, this is perfect for me.

Internet: But look at all these problems that may affect you!

Ethan: They don't really affect me, sorry.

Internet: Please be angry!

It goes a bit more like:

Ethan: Dawn of a new era!*

Best post...ever?

Not listened to the podcast for 2 years or so but I listened to the most recent episode the other day.
Ahh the familiar voices, and a new one too!
I have a new job which see's me on the road for a good part of my day, so I'll be a frequent listener again!

Can someone who listened to last week's podcast give me the quick and dirty recap on the hosts Switch / Zelda situation.

CJ has Zelda for Switch, right?
Greg got Zelda for Wii U?
Phil got it for Wii U also?
Ethan... ehh I'm well aware of Ethan

They used Patreon money to buy each host a Switch, so they ALL bought and played Zelda on Switch.

Welcome back. I miss Greg ford

I totally understood what Greg was saying about the Switch, even if the other hosts didn't. I am basically in the same boat. Based on my situation, the Switch will be a home console 98% of the time. As a home console, it is disappointing because it is only slightly more powerful than the Wii U, the current and upcoming games list has a number of Wii U games I already played, and to get the ideal experience you need to buy a $90 (CAD) controller. Doesn't mean it's not a great system; just means that it's a tough sell right now if you will not take advantage of the portability, which is the main selling point.

Fair, but I think there are numerous at-home circumstances that benefit from the Switch's unique design.

For example, you could sit in the room playing Zelda handheld while your kid plays Minecraft, then when your kid is done, dock the Switch and play on the TV. This sort of situation becomes even more convenient when you just pick up a pro controller to play without removing the Joy Cons.

Basically, I see this as a home console with a screen. It's really not that portable, but very versatile for a home console.

Really enjoyed this episode - Rich is such a good person, always great to have him on.

Switch discussion and arguments between Ethan and Greg were easier to follow than usually. Gregs point was essentially...he would have been fine with Nintendo releasing a PS4-powered console/box with a standard controller for 250-300 us dollar...which isnt surprising for people that play 99% of the time on the big TV at home.

Getting something similar to "console experience" he is used to from the other systems more or less require a Pro controller and a bigger micro sd card down the line. So yeah thats at least 400 bucks for less performance than on PS4/One.

I think the biggest compromise to design, beyond the fact that the thing is a pain to hold, is the fact that the right joycon doesn't have a d-pad.

I was thinking about how nice it would be to have a portable copy of Puyo Puyo Tetris to play, then I realized that it's basically impossible to play without the pro controller, rendering the portability kind of pointless.

You mean the left Joy-Con?

I have not had any problems holding the Joy-Cons or the Switch in Handheld mode. Much easier than the Vita, for sure. :)
