Also don't forget to download the P1P RPG at doddscientifics.com.

I think it's cool that there's a video podcast now, but the audio quality on the regular podcast taking a hit because of it kind of sucks.

This is really sad but true. Listened to the new episode this morning and the drop in audio quality is really noticeable.

It gets better after the break. :)

The reason is that Phil forgot to start his recording for the first half, so I had to use the audio from the YouTube video as the backup for the first segment instead of the cleaner audio from everyone's separate microphones.

The existence of the YouTube video version would normally have no effect on the audio version except in cases like this.

Okay good. I'm only about halfway through, so I'll check out the other half on the way home.

Yep, that was my fault. Sorry 'bout that.

If you people had Kickstarted a recording studio for us, this sort of thing wouldn't happen!

I enjoyed Sticker Star until I got stuck on a 'puzzle' or had trouble with a boss. Then I had to look at a FAQ which I hate doing, but especially towards the end of that game it becomes borderline mandatory.

Why doesn't gaf have a jrpg? I don't want to play a game with a bunch of in-jokes and user names I'm not familiar with!

Good livestream this week. Unfortunately I missed Sewart's jammies :( I ran to my screen as fast as I could but it was too late...

Does anyone have the Nintendo ID's of all the cool P1P guys who have a Wii U? I'll give them a follow

Vsit the P1P boards and you will find that information.

That's pretty much the part I'm struggling through now. The game was pissing me off by the end of world 3. Then I fell in love with it again in world 4. The world 5 and...yeah. Can't wait to be finished with it.

wahhh what is happening?!

What? What? The new episode is up now.

Episode 329: Where There's Smoke...

This week! Special guest friend of the show Ethan Einhorn (also of Sega) joins the hosts for discussion of the week in games. That includes talk of Sly Cooper Thieves in Time, Kingdom Conquest 2, Aliens Colonial Marines, Dead Space 3, Fire Emblem Awakening, Paper Mario: Sticker Star, Arcadecraft, the delay of Rayman Legends, blocking used games in the next generation, digital download futures, getting rid of old games, best Taiko no Tatsujins, broken PS3s, series cross-overs and more!

Ethan was a great guest - he's spot on about handheld / wii u gamepad gaming. It's awesome and how I spend most of my gaming times these days

I like him enough that I'll let the "Uncompromisingly hardcore" PR pitch in the beginning slide

Also, Phil can never be too close to the camera...

Can't believe Mike didn't burst out laughing there.

Arthur Geis used "craven" in a review.

His parody of the gaming press is reaching such heights that I am concerned he may be mirroring the precarious Icarus myth.

I only looked at the big splashy pull quote but to me it looked like he was calling Gearbox cowardly.

Bizarre and inflammatory rhetoric...and actually kind of awesome in a way.

I feel like most of the complaints about Sticker Star would be mitigated if players weren't so adverse to figuring things out for themselves. Certainly some of the game is a bit obtuse, but it's not as if the game is an unending string of obscure impossibility that renders the game unplayable. A reasonably diligent player shouldn't have much trouble.

Totally disagree. There's a difference between having to figure something out and needless trial and error game play. While I will admit that I have a lower tolerance for that sort of thing now that I'm in my twilight years, I still say Sticker Star relies on it way more than is reasonable.

I'm not asking that the game hold my hand. I'm just asking for some sort of hint. Any sort of hint that doesn't require me to fail first. If you give me some sort of subtle hint and then I fail, no biggie. Especially if it's done in such a way that I have an "a-ha!" moment in the aftermath that teaches me the sort of thing I should be looking for later in your game.

I'd say that there's a legacy issue here as well. The Paper Mario RPGs have always been more friendly than this. I'm not totally adverse to change (I love the lack of experience grinding and the sticker system, for example) but the whole thing is such a major gear change that it just doesn't feel like it belongs.

Going to listen to the new podcast tomorrow but is this weeks ep better audio quality than last weeks?
Because I love P1P because of the usual audio quality but since the google hangout thing it has been terrible.

You guys still record locally and edit it together later right?
Please don't tell me you guys are using the audio quality from google hangout :(

Yes the audio is better than last week's (which was just the first segment - after that it was back to normal). That was only last week's episode and it was because Phil forgot to hit record (and, even if we'd been recording with Skype the audio on that part still would've been terrible). This week everything was recorded locally just as before. :)

We've done the last 4 episodes on Google+ Hangouts - the audio hasn't been bad on all of them, right?

Here's me answering that question:

alien walking down hallway, blissfully unaware of marine.gif
Haha I'll take that as a 'yes'.

To be fair though it sounded like Ethan was just messing around, he probably wasn't being 100% serious...

Edit: just listened to the end bit, he did sound serious

I feel like the only parts that truly descend into "trial and error" are the boss fights. It is literally impossible to know which "thing" sticker to bring without either fighting the boss and dying or consulting a guide. The fourth and fifth world bosses depart from this formula, and, as a result, they are far and away the best bosses. The other bosses are just shockingly poorly designed. No amount of exploration or inquisitiveness on the part of the player will get past that without trying again and again.

I obviously disagree with the rest of the game being like that, but I also like to poke around and figure stuff out for myself. It's very Zelda-ish in ways that Zelda has largely moved away from except in puzzle design, so I can absolutely understand being completely blindsided by it in a Paper Mario game.

. and mike thinks double fine can get any publisher they want...

so the baby noise was 100% ethans? everyone else has theirs trained on podcast time? except mike's who are out getting roofied?

Regarding the Rayman: Legends WiiU delay. I'm fairly certain that - apart from the legitimate business reasons mentioned on the episode - there is another reason for the delay. I believe that Microsoft only accept simultaneous release games and Sony will only accept delay releases if exclusive content is given on their version.

So basically, Ubisoft had the choice to release the WiiU version now, lose the ability to release it on the 360 and be forced to created exclusive content for the PS3 version or... well, piss off the ardent but lesser demographic of WiiU owners.

Last week's episode was the only one that had particularly bad audio. The rest have been basically on par.

I'm kind of wondering what everyone expected him to say.

If he said he hadn't played it Sega would have been pissed, if he said it was awful Sega would have been pissed, if he dodged the question Sega would be pissed and everyone would be pointing it out as proof that Sega knew about the game and Sega would be doubly pissed but because he said it was great (which is what his bosses want him to say) everyone else is pissed.

It's a No Win situation. Apart from the part where Ethan gets to keep his job.

Well if he played it and thought it was bad he could have just said nothing. I doubt Sega would have fired him for that.

Or who knows, maybe he really does like it.
