The Player 1 Podcast Topic

I'm kind of wondering what everyone expected him to say.

If he said he hadn't played it Sega would have been pissed, if he said it was awful Sega would have been pissed, if he dodged the question Sega would be pissed and everyone would be pointing it out as proof that Sega knew about the game and Sega would be doubly pissed but because he said it was great (which is what his bosses want him to say) everyone else is pissed.

It's a No Win situation. Apart from the part where Ethan gets to keep his job.

He said exactly what I would expect him to say. Which also happened to kinda blow his credibility.

They aren't mutually exclusive!

I'm glad this thread contains people so financially secure and emboldened with ethics that they would jeopardize their career to make sure they lived up to the standards that the internet masses wants from them.

Once again, I'm fairly certain Ethan would have had to gain clearance from Sega to be on the podcast and they would have either expected or stipulated a plug for their brand-new-most-likely-very-expensive game. He could have dodged the question, he could have answered with negative impressions or, he may actually like the game. Some or none of these points may be correct. The only certain thing is that anything other than a positive plug of the game would have been seen as a poor career choice, especially in the highly volatile game development field.

Regardless, anyone expecting him to dodge or answer with negative opinions are being grossly unfair and are placing their own want before the livelihood of someone else. Ethan is no longer a game reviewer, he is an employee of a company. Any opinion of that company's games should be seen as the views of that company. If I go to an employee of a company and ask them to publicly critique their products and expect anything other than positive opinions then I'm a fool; if they give anything contrary to that then they are a fool. It's not about credibility when your job is no longer offering impartial reviews of industry wide products for a magazine that serves as a buyer's guide.

Let's all be sensible about this and have an understanding where the views of any products expressed by someone at that company may fall under the corporation's agenda of wanting to sell those products and that person wanting to keep their job.

Edit: I wish to make it clear that by what I've written above, I am in no way inferring intent or ascribing ethics to Ethan. I'm merely stating my view towards publicly expressed opinions about a company's products made by employees.

I would just like to take this opportunity to say that Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection is pretty much the best thing ever. Please by some copies today!

That's Sonic's Ulimate Genesis Collection from SEGA. Available now for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3!

That's it, Phil. You're now on the list!

Hang on... Sewart pimped that basketball game, didn't he? And CJs always talking about them robotic unicorns...

...those 8-4 bitches have also talked favourably about them Monster Hunters, Firey Emblems and Damned Shadows... hmmmmm...

...I must game journalism immediately!

He can't be that much of a shill. I missed the name of that iOS game he was pimping and he didn't repeat it.

Edit: Redeemed at the end.

That was a good collection.

Regarding the Rayman: Legends WiiU delay. I'm fairly certain that - apart from the legitimate business reasons mentioned on the episode - there is another reason for the delay. I believe that Microsoft only accept simultaneous release games and Sony will only accept delay releases if exclusive content is given on their version.

So basically, Ubisoft had the choice to release the WiiU version now, lose the ability to release it on the 360 and be forced to created exclusive content for the PS3 version or... well, piss off the ardent but lesser demographic of WiiU owners.

The rule doesn't apply to every game. For example, Ninja Gaiden Razor's Edge is coming out later on Xbox 360.

You realize that this is just a long winded and strangely empassioned way of saying Ethan has no credibility right?

Speaking of 8-4 they've worked on 70-ish games. They don't pimp them all. Pumping everything, even shit, is a wonderful way for people to no longer care when you give your opinion. It's short sighted and foolish. So you're right, it probably was a Sega decision.

I didn't really get Paper Mario Sticker Star until I watched a bunch of Game Center CX. Sticker Star feels like it is trying to be a polished version of something like Atlantis no Nazo or Super Mario Bros. Lost Levels (aka Mario 2 JP). I don't necessarily mind that, I just don't really get much out of those types of games anymore. The whole "game designer as antagonist" I feel is played out and is done better in smaller indie games.
Oh, and that Toad that tricked me into giving him 200 coins made me pretty much quit the game. I'll come back to it one day, but it sucked that Paper Mario was the game I bought the 3DS with.

I played through the first two worlds of Sticker Star and thought it was cool but since no new mechanics had really been introduced felt I had seen all I needed to of that game and put it away. Seemed like it was going to get very repetitive and potentially frustrating. Glad I stopped when I did since my impressions remain mostly positive.

I got the platinum in Ultimate Genesis Collection. But that collection is 99.4% garbage. (The games, mind--all the support writing is brilliant)

*Too Human co-op high five*

That game was so incredibly bad but fun with a pal. The best was the ending, where you missed cutscenes and after a magical timer appears, the game just ends after you kill a few goons.

I love Too Human and Darkest of Days. I consider myself totally without credibility. I really hope Planet comes to my defense.

Darkest of Days was obviously a really neat idea and story that got eye-fucked at 100 different opportunities. You can tell ONE person who worked on that game had wonderful ideas.

I decided to try to watch the youtube version this week (after I already listened to the audio version).

No one looks anything like what I had been imagining. I don't know how I feel about this.

Your sarcasm is very mean.

I am serious!

I mean, sure, I fantasize the P1P cast to be more Angelique-esque. But that wasn't at all realistic a dream.

But truly everyone is not unattractive. Even Mike looks way less mean and grumpy than I imagined he would.

Well I guess I was a little less serious about the "gentlemen" part. But it wasn't all false! You're not all gentle but you're certainly men.

Well I guess I know what P1P's next game should be: anime dating sim. It might even rival Hatoful Boyfriend for greatness.

Been up for a little while but what the hey
