The "PS3 Has No Games" stigma - Why is it still going strong?

I had sent a text message to my girlfriends cousin this morning alerting him to the deal at Dell to get a 40GB PS3 with an extra DS3 and HDMI cable for $399. He owns a 360 but, I know he's a gamer and have been trying to convince him to pick up a PS3 for some of the great stuff on it now and going forward that he won't be able to always get on his 360.

I just got his reply:

"$399 is still too expensive for a system with barely any games."

I can't believe that this boogeyman from the launch times is still around. Do people still honestly believe this?

Maybe, as a 360 owner, he's not going to be interested in the multiplatform titles, and doesn't see enough that appeals to him in Sony's exclusive line-up at the moment to justify dropping $399. It isn't exactly small change.

Didn't you get the memo? Resistance, Uncharted, Motorstorm, Ratchet & Clank, Ridge Racer 7, UT3, Heavenly Sword and Ninja Gaiden Sigma aren't actual GAMES...

why is it that people insist the wii is not capable of decent online gaming?

because people are stupid (and mostly trollish fanboys)

Yep and Ps3 has no AAA Titles that are exclusive!

Have you even played SSBB online?

If PSP has no games then obviously the PS3 doesn't have games. I mean just look at all those not games on the PSP. There are like 10 times more not games then the PS3.

I thought we are on delays now. ps3 HAVE games. just the date is never concrete ;3

But really, we know of the games that are [supposedly] coming out this year but I want to hear more games that never been heard too.

EDIT: Oh, we are tallking about games that are already out. :lol

Since he already has a 360 he's not including multiplatform games. To most consumers, $399 is a shitload of money for the incremental upgrade over a current-gen system they already have.

If he didn't already have a 360, he would view the $399 as a better personal value.

Your girlfriend's cousin is simply a normal consumer. Most people aren't like the GAFcore.

Friend Codes and the general crappiness they bring to the online gaming expeience.

It's not that it's incapable, there's just obviously not as much of an infrastructure there to support online gaming.

you mean stigma?

well, it's still going with the PSP. People will say it has no games, but what they mean is that there isn't enough that they would want to play.

PS3 is a very good Blu-Ray Player and gets recommended by many AV sites for this. So many people (me included) would buy one regardless of available games.

PSP have no games.
No one cares about last gen/BC.
Portable systems make you blind/gives you hand-cramps/rapes you in the ass.
DS/Wii are nothing but nongames.
Nongames are killing the industry.
Everyone who buys an R4/uses CFW are pirates.

Any other useless blanket statements I'm missing?

all good examples.

nonetheless....while the ps3 is certainly starting to come into its own...i dont think it has the exclusive firepower YET to bring in people that are already getting a lot of good gaming on the 360.

those people have plenty of great exclusives to play plus all the cross-platform stuff.

presumably, that will beging to change....ohhh...sometime in June. it will be interesting to see how it develops...

so while its not true to say that the ps3 has NO games. if youve already got a 360, im not sure the case is quite strong enough yet to spend another 400 or so. but i would think a lot of 360 owners are the type that will be interested in MGS.

"The 360 hardware always breaks; its faulty, and every system is going to end up RROD sooner or later so why waste your money on it?"

"The Wii doesn't have any REAL games. Shit like Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and some Nintendo stuff with Mario in it that's totally for kids and not at all worth playing, owning, or glancing at. For casuals only. Also, no 3rd party EVER can sell on the thing."

"The PS3 has no games."

It's not like the PS3 is the lone victim of this bullshit.

yes, also MOH2, PES2008, Mario Strikers, and GH3. All great online games.
I've played Mario strikers..... and between that and SSBB the online of the Wii doesn't even begin to compare with the Xbox 1's online service much less the 360/Ps3s.... comon Friend codes?

I'm not bashing on the Wii as a whole btw I own 1 and SSBB/Zelda/Mario/metroid are all great games... but you can't even argue that it's online is even near the competitors, and it doesn't look like Nintendo is trying to fix that fact anytime soon....

This.

"Certain" people think that multi platform games are just 360 exclusive.

This.

I think the no games/no exclusives argument morphed into people overlooking the ps3 ports.

And shitty ps3 ports didn't help the cause.

The "must have" exclusives are few and far between, once the flow of good games only on PS3 is around the same neighborhood as the 360 it'll start to go away some. Unless the exclusives hit the levels the PS2 reached though i doubt it'll ever totally go away. Hell, look at the PSP. It's had a sick lineup for awhile and people still say it "has no games" :lol.

If he owns a 360, and buys multiformat games only on it, well yes, his vision could be that PS3 hasn't got enough exclusive games to justify a buy. I own both systems, play all multiplatform games on the 360, and really turn on my PS3 very rarely for gaming, just because I use it only for exclusive games. I had a very nice peak of PS3 gaming under christmas, but after that it's just being unused, until MGS4 comes out, I presume.

If you already have a 360, there are not that many compelling exclusives. Uncharted is the only one so far that really stands up to the 360's best games. I got my PS3 because I found a great deal, but I wouldn't have bought a 40 GB for $399, not with no backwards compatibility. Part of the PS3's appeal was that it would also be a PS1 and PS2.

I'm sure this is the correct answer.

The fact that people keep saying "this is the game that will make people buy a PS3" for every single release has gotta be a sign of something.

Pretty much sums it up, although I'd say Resistance and Uncharted.

Except the 360 hardware DOES always break.

Seriously, I don't think I know one person who hasn't had some sort of trouble with theirs.

wow.. I really think this is the answer to the enigma! :P

seriously though, this is it. I doubt your friend literally meant the PS3 has no games. Just that it doesn't really have a ton of games for it right now that he can't already get on his 360. I fully agree with him in that if you are already a 360 gamer, $400 is hard to justify JUST to pickup like 4-5 AAA exclusive titles.

If he didn't have any game system, I would personally recommend the PS3 over the 360. With a game system already though, you can always try drawing the focus on blu-ray. :)

I'm in the industry, I have every system out there, and I believe this.

Truth hurts.

Heh, "multi platform games are X360 exclusive" - obviously not true, but when the Xbox version is the lead SKU and the vast majority of the time the superior (see: non-port) version of the game, stigmas are created, yes.

Good thing for Eye of Judgment.

yep. if you own a 360 there still isnt much on the ps3 to tempt anyone to get one now. of course it will change by the end of the year, but not now. your cousin was right.
