The PS5 disc drive stock situation is embarrassing

In 2020 they weren't as obsessed with digital as they are now. They preferred to lose less money on disc version over forcing consumers to buy digital. Times have changed, they now have profitable digital console from day one.
"Obsessed with digital", this isn't a schoolgirl you're talking about. A company's obsession is only profit and your two ideas are contradictory to oneanother. If you believe forcing digital is more profitable than the $100 difference then this would have been even more true for digital edition consoles at launch. One because the lifetime digital sales would be over a longer period, two because a launch edition PS5 cannot switch to physical ever and three because the difference to PS to recoup would actually be lower than $100 vs the £100 they're foregoing now to "force digital".

It WILL happen, SSDs are not known for durability. Probably x years from now but SSD is used all the time while disc drive only when installing games and starting them for a moment.

When SSD dies you need to change whole motherboard, when disc drives dies in old PS5 you only need to change disc drive part.

Pre order Pro to play old patched games? This is what people are doing right now. I played all those games before on PC or PS5.

I play Metaphor now, on disc... Pro in current form is useless peace of hardware for me. And it's a shame because Metaphor has nice fps upgrade.

Once some big ass exclusive launches and disc drive situation is sorted, why not?
So you didn't buy a pro and are here whing about no disc drives? Fuck off.

Arrogance, greed and lack of competition I’m assuming. If Microsoft truly drops out for good, monopoly Sony is going to be very frightening to behold.
MS isn't providing any competition where physical is better even if they haven't dropped out so what would it change? They're pushing recently released XSXs with no disc drives and have had a XSS with no disc options since launch. If anything sony is the last bastion of physical disc based games so if you want competition for physical releases sony would be the proconsumer alternative in this situation. Both xbox and PC publishers have long forced digital on their users. This in comparison is just a sold out product being hard to find near Pro launch/Christmas.

Sony knows what they’re doing. They know that the PS5 Disc console outsold the digital console. They also know they make more money off digital sales.

Its a good and smart move by Sony. They just need to drip feed a couple disk drives every month to maintain the illusion of choice. Most people will still be unable to procure the disk drive and eventually give up waiting and embrace digital.

For Sony disc drive was cheap, much harder to sell that SoC for 400$ and make profit...

Pro announcement was ~2 months ago. People didn't knew about disc drive thing before that and of course once Cerny showed the console (DE only) drives were gone in 24h in many places...

I posted a thread here that proves you wrong here... Stop it.

I almost always err on the side of the consumer but in this case, Sony might have underestimated demand for the drive (or the impact scalpers were going to have) but you were all warned the drives would be in high demand two months ago. 🤷‍♂️

Drip feed, Unable to procure the disk drive, 2 disc drives a month, blah blah

Reality :
it's still in stock at Gamestop a day later.

I get that there has to be some concern trolling but retailer supply chains will be filled soon enough and you're going to crawl back into the woodwork and pretend like you didn't say any of that nonsense about 2 disc drives a month to drive digital.

It certainly seems that way, maybe the data for the sales of the slim showed that it was trending more towards people wanting digital over physical and so they underestimated what the 'hardcore' wanted.

And, yeh, scalpers have certainly had a hand in it.

The conspiracy that Sony deliberately only have low supply is a little crazy in my opinion.

A week ago Sony was intentionally making the face plates from the slim not fit to squeeze money. Now, we have conspiracy theorists saying they're intentionally shorting the drives to push digital. But when the PS5 launched everyone wanted to argue that the PS5 wasn't $400 because the digital console was impossible to find it was OK that most of the consoles were disc versions.

It sucks it wasn't included but I did order a disk drive the day the pro was finally announced and it was sitting in the closet for 2 months.

Look at OP, look at other people that are complaing.

This is one of the reasons why I didn't get Pro, I planned to buy it few months ago.

They DID make plates like that, they DIDN'T produce enough disc drives. Conspiracy theory or plain reality? All of this is their choices.

I posted a thread here that proves you wrong here... Stop it.

Looking into this thread, it's all about drives not being available? Lol. And it's from the day console was announced.

Also this gold post from you is there:

Hahaha, you have Sony stocks or something?

If they did that with the plates they would have made the drive incompatible and that would have caused people to buy that again. Same with the vertical stand.

Already said it but drives have been out of stock here since the Pro was announced. The only place I know of that have had some come in was JB but only select stores and only 1-2 (last week maybe?). Apart from that it's been a desert.

If you read the thread, you'll see that it wasn't sold out everywhere and that it became available again. It was available for quite some time before becoming "long term" unavailable.

No, I don't own stock in Sony, but I do think Sony needs to grow quickly in order to combat Big Tech in gaming. It's probably already too late for that, but Sony's the best shot most of us have for traditional AAA gaming. I want console gaming to endure.

Sony dominated the industry and after 3 generations had nothing to show for it. Meanwhile, Tencent, Microsoft, Apple, Nvidia, Google, and Amazon pose a real threat to the type of gaming I enjoy.

Bought a disc drive as I don't trust Sony not to go full retard, and just stop making them altogether.

The back paddle buttons were really hard to find for awhile, and then when they finally did come back in stock it was several months after that.

Well, of course. Like I said, they will ship a little here and there to maintain the “Sony is still supporting physical” narrative. Just waiting for it to normalize as physical folks loses their patience and start buying digital

This is what seems to have happened. I saw so many posts here or on Social media of people rushing to buy a drive the moment the pro was annoucned. Combine this with scalpers and the demand completely outstripped the supply.
Might be intended by scalpers, a plan to trap the prices later on (which mean today)

Thinking Sony is pulling a Nintendo with limiting supply. Some kind of experiment to see how the public reacts so they can nickel and dime the PS6. They'll probably sell the power cable for it separate. Need a controller for it? $89.99. Want 60fps with that 4k game? Gotta subscribe! That's the type of things these companies talk about in their meetings. That's the type of industry they are pushing for. Not all, but many.
All companies aroubd the world want subcriptions from game to movies to any media or service. Sony is following trends which are awful

Good luck finding one in Europe right now. I have a Pro, and I'm only playing PS+ games for now, and have a bunch of physical PS5 games waiting. Hopefully I get one before Xmas.

Sony wants you to stick with digital. The new Sony isn't consumer friendly anymore.
I'm curious what Sony plans for the PS6.

No disc drive at all?
Current disc drive not compatible with PS6?
Super expensive or rare PS6 disc drive?

Or maybe they'll surprise us and there will be a PS6 disc edition.

That's for the birds. It's clear what SONY is doing and not including a disc drive in your premier product is lame in the 1st place, never mind deliberately limiting supply of the disc drive

As others have said here, SONY is more or less forcing Pro Owers to go digital and that's the direction of travel anyway for the industry like it or not

This would be a good conspiracy theory for the PS6 which will obviously be a lot more mainstream. But PS5 Pro? People interested in this model are hardcore players very invested in the PlayStation ecosystem and it wouldn't be surprising if most of them owned disc games (or even entire collections). They're not going to embrace all-digital future due to the shortage of drives. It's more likely they'll avoid the upgrade altogether until the disc drive returns to stock.

Sony doesn't really care about the scalpers in this case either. Their main goal is to push for digital, not to cater to the remaining 8 physical players around.
yeah, i know that, conspiracy or not, they could always do something that we, as customers, (or some customers ) don't like.
I never buy digital, unless i cant find it here. and it's bug me as well.

PS5 Slim used is still going to run you at least 400 dollars and the trade in value of that unit sans disc is 240. So you're looking at 160.

But you're forgetting something. Gamestop isn't going to take that trade in at full value without the drive cover. Maybe you could convince them to let you take the cover off the pro, but you're still spending 160 dollars on an 80 dollar disc drive.
Well, the disc drive here costs around 120€ and the ps5 pro 799€ .... Not as cheap as in the states

Well currently it seems to be the only way to get a disc drive if you don't want to pay scalper prices

Yeah I'd imagine that is where the highest demand is, just wait it out until stock comes back and avoid the scalpers. Maybe sign up for a tracker. Don't believe the bullshit here that they have not been replenishing supply for six months either, that's total nonsense. it's difficult to get but keep checking for incoming stock. Here in the UK places had stock just this Friday. You can see that they restocked too within a week:

Screenshot-20241110-094340-Chrome.jpg

They sell out fast though.

My hope is that Sony releases a PS5 Pro with a disc drive at some point. Maybe this time next year. They have become Apple, where they think they can sell a premium version with less stuff than the base model like Apple. Oh here is our new premium monitor but the stand is separate.

The PS5 Pro is a premium version of the PS5 Digital. It has everything the digital had.

But that shouldn't be my problem. Many stores had bundle offers with a drive/stand, which were canceled only after a few weeks. There weren't that many drives avaliable before the PS5 Pro was presented in detail, and a moment later there were none.

It's not fair that a customer is forced to hastily order components for hardware that has not yet been reviewed or even properly presented by the manufacturer. Most of what we know about pro is from last week.

It is obvious that this is not how it should be, blaming buyers for not purchasing the drive within one day of finding out that it would be sold separately is a bit of an exaggeration, i think. After all, they're just drives, it's not like they're made from unicorn dicks, there should be plenty of them.
Sometimes you just have to plan better for things that you are interested in. Sony could have also planned better.... now you just have to wait and get one when it is available. If Sony truly is not supplying the market with drives anymore it will become clear.

The drive is an an optional add-on. Given the price of the system without the drive, don't expect it to be cheaper with one bundled. Put another way, the price of the Pro with the drive is $778.99.

I doubt it because people have a lot of options on where they can play games now.

No one really needs a PlayStation anymore and if the switch 2 is actually a decent console that and PC will be competition for them.

Not in Germany, sold out everywhere. I am on a waitinglist at Gamestop.

I dont understand whats up with Sony this gen, they are making some weird anti-consumer choices as if they actively want turn people off from their brand.....I dont get it.

IMO we can thank Microsoft for this. Without proper competition, Sony become this.

Is not like Nintendo is no competition, but I guess Sony not consider Nintendo a competitor from the console market.

Don't you think it's pathetic that Sony couldn't even deliver drives at launch??

Well, at least in Europe it was like that.

I don't know why people think like this.

Do you think Sony can magically pull drives out of their ass?

You're not going to expand your manufacturing capabilities just to account for surge demand.

Drives were available globally, including in Europe and the refrain from people like you at the time was, this is going to bomb, no one is going to buy this, especially given the pricing in Europe; 120 euro plus the 800 euro for the system.

Now that you're caught with your pants down, it's somehow Sony's fault. The level of hypocrisy is palpable.

1. Release digital only console for hardcore gamers.
2. Not make new disc drives
3. Hardcore gamers want disc drive
4. Sony: suprised pilachu.jpg

Sony is responsible for not making enough disc drives, they are also responsible for releasing digital only console. Yet you blame customers...

I have no idea how anyone can be so deluded and say such nonsense.

Any idiot with a functioning brain would know that if you sell a console with an optional drive, you should provide enough drives at launch. Or do you think people won't cancel the console if they can't also buy a drive???

I was caught with my pants down??? What kind of shit are you talking about?? I ordered the drive at the end of September and Sony still couldn't deliver. Do you think it's the customers' fault that Sony is too stupid to deliver enough drives for the launch???🤦
