The PS5 disc drive stock situation is embarrassing

If you want to make a scalper earn his keep, I suggest buying a drive on ebay and submitting a return on the 30th day. Rinse and repeat until they're widely available in stores. It requires a bit of leg work, but at least you'd be doing it with a nice smirk.

One thing to consider is that I've been digital only for modern games for the better part of two decades and I'm still rebuying shit I had physical on PC. This might be your sign to go ahead and take the leap. If nothing else for a better shot at backwards compatibility since we're getting strong signs the disc drives are going away. Disc version of Returnal might not do much good on a PS7, but a digital license might. Emulators don't do the trick for me so I'm still building a physical collection for NES->PS2. I get it. Everything after that gets sketchy when it comes to physical.

I hear you, and I don't expect Backwards compatibility to continue in perpetuity, but as long as it's here and exists, in this generation, I would do any and everything to make sure that I can enjoy the current and past generation(s) for as long as I want/can.

In other words, as long as Physical medium exists, I will support (and prefer) it.

The longer you support it though the bigger the shock is going to be when you lose your entire library.

Seems like a poor investment when you consider that it has a full risk profile. Like it's absolutely going to happen at some point.

Received mine today. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I used the PayPal Payin4 option which was lighter on my wallet. Again, you have to select "Paypal Credit" once you click "Checkout", then the option for PayIn4 will appear (if you use PayPal frequently). Anyway, it arrived already and all is well so far. Installing my Demon Souls Remake, Shadow of Colossus Remake, and then Bloodborne. One thing i can say is the drive is a bit tricky to install especially for those with nerve conditions. Just try to take your time. Maybe smoke a fat dooby or something then proceed:
  • Make sure everything to your PS5 is unplugged prior to attaching your disc drive
  • Read the directions!
  • Use a table to set your PS5 on while you install your Disc Drive, not your lap
  • Be careful lining up the parts where it "clips" on. Take your time to make sure things line up
  • There are triangular plastic pieces included with the disc drive which are larger than the ones that come with the PS5 Pro. There are holes in which these attach to on the PS5 Pro and when the disc drive is attached, will allow you to set the system sideways once the these pieces are firmly pressed into place
Here's a good tutorial:

As it was iterated in numerous posts here on GAF, SONY should be absolutely ashamed for not released a PS5 PS5 Pro version WITH the actual fking disc drive. People will not forget this! Now, off to scour for some PS4/PS5 disc games before SONY puts everything behind a paywall for the PS6.

More than embarrassing, it's a pure shame, I'm convinced it's on purpose to push the digital scheme "I own nothing and I'm hapoy" and skip all retailers maximizing their margins then rarefy sales. Don't underestimate these kind of "silent strategy", they know very well what their doing.
It's even worse with eco-people playing their games with the unfounded rhetoric "Hey, we're saving the planet from plastic ! We're modern heros", yeah sure, 24/7 running severs is so eco-friendly.

It's dangerous to go alone Sony, take this !

RE your comment about Sony not providing a disc drive, I agree! But they did this because they want to provide all future consoles without a disc drive, I still feel PS6 will have the option to purchase a disc drive separately but they want you to get used to the console not coming with it. They already stated they have changed direction to make it optional before they released the Pro. I bought a disc drive for the Pro days before they were due to announce Pro because I knew. When you are over 40 and have been with PlayStation for the whole 30 years, you come to know how they think. They haven't cared much for the goodwill of their consumers for a while now because their ego is sky high with their success of PS4 & PS5 and lack of real competition.

It is a trade in, i will probably get more, when i sell it.

You are under water both ways now. You took a hit on the trade in and you are going to take a hit on selling the Pro used. Your losses at that point are probably getting close the difference in price between PS5 and Pro. Might want to think about it a bit.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch

And they will likely repeat the same strategy for PS6 of constricting the supplies for the disk drive, to continue shifting the physical die-hards to digital. They have pretty much said it out loud without saying it literally, with what they are doing for PS5 Pro.

The disc drive was in stock everywhere in the last week of October. I got mine from Best Buy then. I don't think this was some strategy to shift people to digital (the time to do that is the beginning of the gen, not the middle, and not to the die hard people). They just mismanaged the situation.

Sony wants you to buy thier games digitally more than physically which make me fear that they gonna pull the same crap with PS6.

At least I can easily ignore Pro because it’s not really new system, I won’t miss out on games if I don’t get Pro.

With PS6 is different story, I hope they don't fucking do this again.
Thats when I end my Sony ownership with ps5 as the last console and be just Switch2 and PC. my ps5 and xbox x will be regulated to crossgen games and older titles. I won't buy inflated digital only console.

I don't think Nintendo will be as aggressive as Sony is on digital... but at the same time I wouldn't be surprised if there is a digital only Switch 2 model and most titles are only partially on the cart.

I love the PlayStation, but if people can't see that Sony is as greedy and anti consumer as they come, they are deluded! If Xbox leaves the console space, we are most definitely screwed! Businesses need to turn profits, and a good amount at that, because that money normally goes into R&D for future development etc. But I feel Sony are going that extra mile in their pricing for maximum profit at the expense of the consumer. Looking at products like the Portal(which I own) and the Dualsense Edge, they could be a bit cheaper and they would still be turning a good profit. How do I know Sony isn't mis managing their spending, how do I know they haven't wasted their profits in their operations through poor decision making? Maybe they charge what they charge because they are shit at budgeting? Nobody knows! Just because they are successful, doesn't mean they are efficient. People who don't know anything about business don't realise or think about these things.

If you're using the Walmart app to check availability and it says "out of stock", that may not be necessarily be true. On my way to Walmart it said there was only 1 left when all of a sudden it said "out of stock". I got worried and figured my trip was going to be in vain. But, when i arrived, there were two left. The employee told me that when items get low in stock the app will say that to give priority to customers in-store.

So, anyone still trying to get one i'd make sure to visit the store personaly.

PS Direct shipped the disc drive I ordered the other day, it's coming on Thursday, maybe earlier. But they loaded a very small batch, it only lasted a few hours. They're clearly underproducing it.

Please understand, it's very difficult manufacturing $5 blu-ray disc drives. It's not like Sony's been doing this for 20 years now or anything. You can buy your games digitally meanwhile!
