The PS5 disc drive stock situation is embarrassing

1. Release digital only console for hardcore gamers.
2. Not make new disc drives
3. Hardcore gamers want disc drive
4. Sony: suprised pilachu.jpg

Sony is responsible for making enough disc drives, they are also responsible for releasing digital only console. Yet you blame customers...

You're somehow convinced that you represent core gamers.

They made new drives and made sure they were available for order before the system went on sale. You could argue that they should have waited until the system launched, but I'm not sure that argument has merit. Core gamers knew to order that shit in advance.

There is no "enough" disc drives.

You have no idea how many they produced to begin with. How much demand is legitimate consumers vs scalpers. Once inventory gets low enough, yeah scalpers are going to get involved, but I have yet to see significant scalping compared to the numbers Sony is going to be selling PS5 Pros.

The vast majority of people who wanted a disc drive probably got one and then you have people like yourselves who waited. You don't need a PS5 Pro at launch nor do you need a disc drive at launch. It's fine to wait, but the problem is now you're feeling fomo.

Bojji has been shit talking the PS5 Pro in every thread that comes up, but now he is OUTRAGED at the lack of disc drives available? Come off it man, you're a troll.

I have no idea how anyone can be so deluded and say such nonsense.

Any idiot with a functioning brain would know that if you sell a console with an optional drive, you should provide enough drives at launch. Or do you think people won't cancel the console if they can't also buy a drive???

I was caught with my pants down??? What kind of shit are you talking about?? I ordered the drive at the end of September and Sony still couldn't deliver. Do you think it's the customers' fault that Sony is too stupid to deliver enough drives for the launch???🤦

As soon as they announced that it wasn't coming out with a drive, you should have bought one... You knew this was the reality since August, so you waited a month... and you didn't get one... that's life man, but yeah, you got caught with your pants down. You yourself said that you would have to buy the drive separately in August, you absolutely knew.

Just cancel you order for the console then and stop complaining... it's silly.

Your entire argument boils down to you think Sony should have kept inventory off the shelves until launch, but that doesn't make any real difference.

Also no chance you ordered from PS direct in September. I've already seen you say you ordered from retailers.

I dunno.. it is more convenient, don't have to go out or deal with shipping. And the main attraction of physical (getting the game decently cheaper) isn't as easy as it was.
That's being very short-sighted.

I'd rather deal with shipping a $20 game on sale than having instant access to a $70 game that rarely ever goes on sale.

I'd rather be able to buy a disc that I have physically insert than forever be out of the option of ever playing that game because it was permanently removed from the digital store.

I got lucky. Got a PS5 Pro on Friday at WalMart. Dude said I was the first to even ask about them. He had to go in the back to get it, it wasn't in the display case. WalMart didn't have any disk drives, but "The Exchange" which was just around the block from WallyWorld DID have one, so naturally I bought it. I didn't even bother to look for a vertical stand since the console stands vertically just fine without it, especially with the disk drive attached.
It was nice that I could swap my M2.SSD over to the Pro without reformatting it. Saves a lot of time re-downloading stuff.
Beyond all the talked about enhancements the Pro brings, one thing I noticed instantly is that the depth of colors appears richer and deeper on all games. I'm noticing richer color gradients that I didn't notice on the OG PS5. Huh. Not sure if that's a real improvement, or just some minor variance in outputs between systems that can happen. Anyway, I'm pretty happy with it.

That was kind of what I was talking about... that level of deal is increasingly rare. Retailers aren't charities and with volume decreasing, so does the need to take losses on existing inventory to move games that aren't selling.

Basically what they mean is this is not Sony's fault at all for not increasing the manufacture and stockpiling the of the disk drives many months prior to releasing the PS5 Pro. It is both Microsoft and the PS players' fault for letting Sony limiting the stocks and not securing one many months ago.

I mean you think that's short-sighted, but the reality is we've all become accustomed to a higher degree of backward compatibility now. Not only can we play previous generation games, but we can expect them be enhanced over the previous generation. It's never been better. This didn't exist at all on home consoles until we hit PS2. And we lost that later on in the PS3 generation. The PS4 couldn't play PS3 games or any previous games.

We're in a new stage here, but people are assuming they'll be able to bring their physical games forward with them in perpetuity and that's simply unlikely. The PS6 might have an optical drive option, but the PS7 almost certainly won't. So as far as being short sighted is concerned... I think that's it and maybe that's one reason why people are upset at 10 dollar upgrades, because they know at one point they'll be locked out of upgrading their games, while the rest of us get a cheap next gen update for our favorite games of previous generations.

Waiting is always an option.

Not the one I picked unfortunately

Edit: I sold my ps5.. bought a ps5 pro… lots my games are disc… and movies… I coulda waited but it’s been like this for a while.

It's been like this for just 2 months, PS5 Pro got announced in September. This is why scalpers win, people can't wait 3 months or so for the situation to normalize.

It was mdg…. Not eBay or anything like that… it’s an actual company…. but I guess they are scalpers too lol

Looks like it's getting better already. I put a stock tracker on them today. While at work I had 4 alarms but couldn't do anything about it.

Then just a few minutes ago I had it in cart ready to buy 3 times from Walmart and target. Also showing three local stores that will have them at open in the morning.

I'm waiting a week before I try to pick it up though between bills and the pro. I just don't see any problems getting one with a tracker.

I understand the need from their end, but preventing millions of users to carry over their physical games to new machine is downright 'criminal'.

Sony doesn’t care. What are these million of users going to do? Jump to another platform? Of course not

People want the drive. The bundle including the drive has shot to number 1 sold at Very UK

I 100% feel like sony will release a version with the disk drive - and probably stand included. So I am going to wait for that and a sale, maybe next year for £699 all in.

Of course people want the drive.

But they won’t sell a version with the disk drive included. Best you’ll get is a bundle deal, but most likely official bundles would be with a digital game.

Will be interesting to see how it goes. You could be right. I am sure there will be at least a retail made bundle next year and then maybe a £100 discount on the pro so it basically is a £699 bundle with the drive+stand.

It's just a stupid decision on their part not selling the console with a disk drive.

Every time I realize I'm interested in the console and evaluate the hassle I would have to go to get the console + the drive...it's just too much for me.

Trying to force me to go digital, when I have a decent console physical library...it's a fat no from me.

The disc drive is not that expensive when it's not scalped.
And on the positive side - you can replace it when it breaks

Make them cheaper in order to break easily and make the consumer buy another one.

Yeah, good approach for the company, not for the consumer.

Guess he also likes the convenience of deciding what to do with his game after buying it. Such as storing it somewhere, putting it in a different Playstation, letting someone borrow it, or retaining the option to sell it in the future. This is the only way I will buy a $70 game, digital games are for discounts and small games.

Limited stock at time of highest demand/launch... ohmagawd never heard of that before /s

Sorry, find it hard to care about people having to wait for a thing to come into stock. If it had been permanently discontinued, sure... but when a product's only been out days, and scalpers have identified it as an opportunity to turn a quick buck. C'mon. Was this turn of events really unforseeable?

I think it could go 50/50 on the drive SKU. Don't think any SKU will come with the stand, the PS5 Slim also doesn't come with a stand, and most PlayStation consoles didn't. Pretty sure the launch PS5 is the first PlayStation to come with a vertical stand as it was a hybrid of both the horizontal and vertical stand.

I think they'll read the data on this and see how many people are buying the disc drive separately. At the end of the day selling the drive separately results in significantly higher margins. If retailers want to create their own bundles, that's one thing, but Sony still gets their margins.

I think after the GTA6 surge slows down, we'll see PS5 family price cuts once sales really dry up and no later than the 2026 holiday season

PS5 Pro - 600 dollars
PS5 Standard - 400 dollars
PS5 Digital - 350 dollars

not sure how many price sensitive people are going to be paying $600 in Q4 2026 for a PS5 Pro, with PS6 2 years away and likely cheaper or same price.

Anyone in the NL Randstad area wants a disc drive and is unable to get one just message me, I have a spare that I'm not using right now. No markup or scalping here, retail value for anyone who is interested. I can pick one up next year, most of my games are digital so if someone is in desperate need I don't mind parting with it. Its still sealed, never been opened etc...

Just doing it as a favor for a fellow Gaf user in need. Not really bothered enough to sell it on Marktplaats.

I looked on Stock Informer yesterday and was surprised to see that it is still out of stock everywhere. I thought that stock levels would have increased as of the weekend.

It might be worth taking a trip to your local Game/Sports Direct and just asking if they have one. I still can't believe I managed to walk into store and pick it straight up off the shelf, knowing how bad stock levels are. Give it a go anyway I say!

Think about it this way. If someone hasn't bought a PS5 yet in this generation, what makes you think they'll buy a PS6 right out of the gates?

By the time the PS6 launches, the PS5 Pro could very well be 450 or 500 dollars. Hell the PS6 might be 700 dollars.

The question someone has to ask themselves in buying a PS5 is would you rather drop 350 for a digital, 400 for a standard, or 600 for a Pro. Sony has worked itself out that many people may just spring for the Pro, but they can have their cake and eat it too with a really low (relative) entry price.

The PS5 Pro is priced this way because it's supposed to be for hardcore enthusiasts.

The PS6 would be aiming at the usual mainstream market. a $700 price tag would be quite brave indeed.

I don't expect the PS6 to be cheaper than the PS5 Pro, the only question is how much does it cost at launch compared to the PS5 Pro's launch price.

I think we're seeing a shift in the console market, especially as Microsoft exits, where Sony will simply market the PS5 family as the entry level gaming console and the PS6 as the hardcore gaming console, with the PS5 Pro kind of bridging the two.

I think people are still looking at things in the sense of console unit sales rather than what Sony and others really care about at this point which is MAUs. Most games are going to be cross-gen between PS5 and PS6 and PlayStation as a Platform kind of takes over, similar to PCs. Of course there will be elements of things that can only be done on PS6, but I think few games will be platform exclusive given how expensive games are to develop.

When you have 120 million MAUs, you want your games available to all players, which has never really been possible in the history of console gaming. Yeah reach peak users and then you immediately lose your player base with the next generation console. The only time this was kind of quelled was with the PS2 which could play PS1 games. It happened with the PS3 as well, but at a really significant cost.

Who is having a hard time? It’s in stock everywhere
I mean it's hard for them to get it while regular users miss out. It's readily available so they can't make any money off it by scalping

Also, haven't Sony put in place a one console per user thing on sales from the store? That certainly wasn't in place at launch of the PS5 with scalpers using software to snaffle them all up meaning actual users missed out even waiting for hours.

"Not make disc drives" is horseshit though. They made them. There was just a bigger surge than what the supply chain could provide.

I have said this part before so its not news but got to tour their packaging facility in Terre Haute Indiana and the NDA expires very soon, like 48 hours soon
Day prior to announcement :

September 24th:
Scalpers already tapped out in the UK trying to scalp the disc drive.

I suspect most other countries it will be the same soon.
People on GAF would have known to buy it before the pro announcement if they were following along :)

I understand that some are angry that they can't get hold of a disc drive but factories and logistics have capacities and supply chain delays and can't just ramp up to meet demand, there is a lead time, especially when scalpers disrupt the market. Trust me there is nothing they would love more than to sell you a peripheral. You're going to be OK.

I hear you, and I don't expect Backwards compatibility to continue in perpetuity, but as long as it's here and exists, in this generation, I would do any and everything to make sure that I can enjoy the current and past generation(s) for as long as I want/can.

In other words, as long as Physical medium exists, I will support (and prefer) it.
