The Rock is good in everything he does. Although gets unfairly labeled as an action star, he has a diverse range and doesn't get the credit he deserves.

I dunno, the fact that he's a big buff tuff guy could be a hilarity intensifier if he plays an inept would be hero.

What I mean is, I can totally picture Russell's Jack losing in the end, and his ego is undeserved until the end. You never expect The Rock to lose, even if he is a bumbling idiot and pratfalls his way into accident after accident. His ego would make sense.

Wasn't the original actually a bit of a flop box office wise? Seems like they'll remake any old film these days.

The original is a stone cold classic though. If they fuck this up they can join Lem Lee in the hell of being cut to pieces.

Brock Lesnar needs to get cast as the monster.

Kaientai as the henchmen.

Tajiri should be in it as well.

Shit they should get a bunch of DDT wrestlers for the action scenes.

Lashley

Why does he wear the mask!?

Yeah, it flopped. Made 11m.

IDK, I think his swoleness could add to the comedy, actually. They could play the whole thing up even more because on top of thinking he's this badass gift to mankind, his muscles are just for show because in a real fight he'll be getting beat down by these random Mortal Kombat kung fu stereotypes.

But again, I just have no faith this will turn out well unless it's Edgar Wright at the helm or something.

Just like the Rundown.

I don't think anyone wanted this. I'm not even sure this sort of movie would do well nowadays without them losing the spirit of it.

If Carpenter were involved I might feel better, but I'm not getting that from this.

I could see Leonardo DiCaprio or someone doing the role. It needs someone charismatic, funny, and someone that can play an overall goofball type that's a fish out of water who thinks he's all that.

I just don't think of the Rock as being Jack Burton. I think of the Rock as being one of the three storms or something.

Paul Walker would have been really damn good for the role if he hammed it up a bit.

Fucking Hollywood. With film nowadays tend to be shot in digital, it would look too clean which ruins part of what makes the original great aside from all the other things, nobody asked for this.

"Bullshit"

This could work all depends on execution though I'm willing to give it a shot loved the mystical elements of the original film hopefully it's all makeup and animatronics instead of CGI.

Kurt played badasses but Jack Burton thinks he is a badass and conclusively isn't. He postures and gets lucky. The Rock can play incompetent, but in a Pain & Gain way where he's dopey and jumpy.

Honestly the biggest sticking point for me is physicality. The Rock is beyond Russell, even beyond Stallone. He's all fucking muscle. You can't take a guy with that body type and show that he's entirely useless in action because the proof is that he could crush is right there flexing and perpetually covered in flopsweat.

You write the story where a giant muscle-bound dude is not what you need to solve the situation.

Their best bet with this is to get the casting right, not take the entire thing too seriously, and not make a shot-for-shot remake. In fact, I'd start with the premise and diverge completely from there, building what's essentially a whole new film around the Rock.

Great. So when this comes out people wont believe the original is one of my favorite movies of all time and they'll just think I prefer the original just cause Im some elitist or something.

The Rock is a more than worthy replacement for Kurt Russell, but that was only part of why the original was great. I don't think Carpenter is irreplaceable (although I sure wouldn't mind him doing the soundtrack again, especially after how well his album turned out), but they need a director that is willing to take the piss out of the proceedings while maintaining the breakneck pacing, along with a screenplay that can match the energy and give all the actors a lot of juicy parts and great one-liners.

Do we need or want a remake? And with "The Rock" as Jack Burton?

No. I'm out.

Edit: Well, I'll probably watch it anyway.

The Rock is a bigger pop culture icon than Jack Burton.

Also the only reason people know anything about Big Trouble is because they used to show it a billion times after episodes of WCW Thunder.

I cannot wait till this absolutely out grosses every Carpenter movie combined just to piss off the doubters

Odd question . how many of his movies have been original?

And what's to remake?but I'll watch it. How bad can it really be,considering the original?

at last, for christ's sake
threw up in my mouth a little. Not only they're remaking BTILC which is pretty much perfect '80s escapism that hasn't aged a day, they're also putting the Rock in it because reasons

What an odd post.

1. No shit the Rock is a bigger pop culture icon than a character from a cult 80's movie.

2. What the fuck is WCW Thunder?

3. $288,503,096 is the number to beat. Domestic, not a chance. Worldwide, there's a chance.

I really have no objections against the Rock starring in this reboot. I think he could be a legitimately good fit for something as inherently cheesy as Big Trouble in Little China. Out of all the big name actors they could assign to lead in this movie, The Rock is one that I don't feel so bad about.

This is such an odd choice for a Carpenter movie to remake. I am a little more worried about this one retaining the spirit of the original than the casting choice they have made for the main lead.

One thing is for sure, it will never have an awesome music video like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvYEdmW47gQ attached to the movie.

I see no problem with this casting, dont get why are people so outraged for no reason, he could play a decent take on Jack Burton.

I like The Rock and I like Big Trouble in Little China. I hope it's a good remake and The Rock is willing to actually be the sidekick of the show, as per the original Jack Burton.

Jack Burton - The Rock
Wang Chi - Jason Stratham
David Lopan - Samuel L Jackson
Egg Shen - Bill Murray
