The Simpsons composer Alf Clausen fired after 27 years

tbh didnt they reuse a lot of music in the later seasons?

Just finished watching Season 27 and it seems every episode is using music from the last few years instead of original stuff (besides the "musical numbers" they had in this season).

It's a pretty common tactic in comedy shows, basically it's a music library that they pulled from. The Simpsons hasn't really been using music so prominent these past few seasons anyway, aside from the attempts to cringely appealing to generation Z.

The Simpsons now is just awful. I try go switch on a new episode and it's just...painful. People here who say 'don't watch it then' don't understand how the creation of so many crap series dilutes The Simpsons' legacy.

Like if I was showing it to a friend and I switched on a random episode, it is more likely than not that that episode would be crap.

I have never known another show able to so easily carry on for so long despite such an appalling drop in quality and creativity.

It's a historic show and the shit will fall away in time. It's like two different shows anyways from it's peak.

I haven't watched since season 9 maybe, then the movie. I don't give a shit about the current stuff and it won't ruin the show for me.

Reminds me of the Bungie situation...dude was probably just too expensive to keep on the payroll so they cut him.

Sad to be honest, shitting on the legacy. I wonder what Matt Groening feels about this.

Also, all the simpsons references in the comments. LOL.

from Vanity Fair

Clausen uses a 35-piece orchestra every week — something that "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening insisted upon from the start of the show. Including costs of musicians, recording studios, and orchestration, expenses routinely run into the millions of dollars per year. Danny Elfman's "Simpsons" theme is expected to be retained.

looks like Fox is just being cheap and tightening the belts as the show nears ending.

Do "bad" seasons of SNL dilute its legacy? NBA?

It will be about the money. It's always about the money.

The Simpsons old timers will be raking in huge fees for a season. I can't imagine things will be any different for a long time composer.

I don't think that was a comparable situation considering O'Donnell was fired from the company and the legal case which happened as a result of his unfair dismissal was ruled in his favour.

They stopped caring about the writing and acting years ago, I'm surprised it took this long for them to stop caring about the music.

This pretty much kills any chance of my dream vinyl happening as well.

I'd have loved a The Simpsons OST vinyl at some point - maybe the original songs but mainly all the themes they used with the orchestra through the years. The fight theme used for whenever Bart and Milhouse tumble or the Spring theme (which is a bit of a rip-off of Four Seasons) whenever they showed the national forest.

But I'm guessing it'd need sign off from Fox and Clausen now and some sort of deal.

This show should have ended with dignity a decade ago... I haven't even watched it in 13+ years.

When the movie released would have been the perfect time. A new Simpsons movie every few years. I think that would have been pretty great.

Fun fact... before they re-animated the opening sequence for the HD era transition in Season 20, Lisa's saxophone was inexplicably colored blue - despite the fact that it always looked normal when featured in episodes.

Might have been a way to make it stand out in the background. Had it normal colors, it wouldn't be nearly as noticed.

They probably determined they didn't need this added expense to maintain the show's popularity. Fair.

Firing him over email, though. That's fucked.

Dude is almost 80 years old. I don't like or watch the new Simpsons but I can understand a cartoon wanting to try some fresher, younger talent.
