Hans Zimmer was a pleasant surprise.
Also seems like a good chunk of the crowd had not watched The Longest Daycare before - which is a shame, it's Oscar-nominated and really good.
An unfortunate omission from last month's marathon on FXX.

Wow, they brought in Kipp Lennon to sing Happy Birthday Lisa with Nancy. Really cool stuff.

Dig the expanded lyrics to Weird Al's song from Three Gays of the Condo. Particularly the bowling instructor rhyme fake-out.

Last Daycare was okay. Not bad at all. Just felt like someone at Fox demanded a short and one of the writers said "Hey, remember that Streetcar Named Marge episode with the daycare? Let's do that."

Watching through the concert, I was surprised Weird Al got away with this.

I'm not. The current show's production staff is extremely self-aware of what the long-time diehard fans revere. And they're the ones paying for tickets to an event like this one.

Love The Critic shout-out by Lovitz. Also, I'm amused that the guy who filmed this and uploaded it to YouTube laughs almost exactly like Comic Book Guy.

Yeah, well...they don't seem to be willing to talk about it themselves publicly. Considering that the staff (Al Jean in particular) are saying the show is still great. I mean, yeah, there's still a few hidden gems here and there, but come on.

They talked about it plenty in that Tapped Out quest I cited in the marathon thread a few weeks back. Just read between the lines - when Krusty says he misses the old Springfield, he's really saying he misses the old episodes. And when they're discussing new Itchy & Scratchy episodes, they're really talking about why they still make new Simpsons episodes.

Krusty: "I miss the old Springfield. Where’s the black market Vicodin? Where’s the underground kangaroo fight club? I need my ‘roo fights! Sure, I’m making lots of money. But that gets boring without morally reprehensible things to spend it on."

Blue-Haired Lawyer: "Krusty, if you’re jaded about being rich, there’s only on solution to your spiritual crisis – get even richer."

Krusty: "Yeah, then I can buy a private island. And attach rockets to it, and blast it into space. Ah, Space Island."

Blue-Haired Lawyer: "What you need is to start making new Itchy & Scratchys."

Krusty: "But we’ve already got hundreds of them. And the characters don’t change or age. What innovative stories could any writer wring out of those characters?"

Blue-Haired Lawyer: "From what I can tell, none. But it doesn’t matter. No one needs to watch the new episodes. They just need to know they’re being made and remember the old ones fondly… and voila, the brand is still relevant! Then you can start merchandising t-shirts and action figures, slot machines and beer… maybe even develop a freemium game!"

Krusty: "Would the game have to be good?"

Blue-Haired Lawyer: "Not at all. Just rebuild Itchy & Scratchy Studios. I promise you’ll be slurping up cash pronto from the sweet IP!"
And if you saw the crowd in attendance at that Hollywood Bowl show last night, you can see that the brand is still plenty relevant. And they capped off the evening by having Nancy sing a song she first sang over 24 years ago in 1990.

I know they tend to speak of their decline in hidden doses, I'm just saying that they're not that blatant and upfront about it.

Also, would it surprise you if that was the first time I heard Do The Bartman in its entirety?

Forgot to post my impressions! But it looks like you guys had it covered :)

I had a blast. I actually really enjoyed the exclusive hollywood bowl interstitials between performances, there were some good laughs. Our performance on Friday had Hank Azaria flustered by a missing clip, so he began blaming some guy in the audience as Apu. "Oh how I hate you." It's always fun to watch Simpsons events with a bunch of fans, reminded me of how much better of an experience it made watching the Simpsons Movie.

I was sad that both Dan Castellaneta and Julie Kavner were no-shows. I was also hoping they'd have the orchestra play the Mother Simpson credits theme. Although I'm okay with not crying in public :p
Lowest point of course was the clip shown from That 90's Show. Why.

Do the Bart Man was an awesome surprise, it must have been hard for Nancy to do the whole song and dance to such a fast pace. The highlight of course was Conan's Monorail performance. Overall, I loved it. In hindsight I wish I could have gone one more night.

However, sadness dawned on me thinking that we might be seeing the show wind down. All of these crossovers getting made, this 3-day celebration of the show's history in music at the bowl.. something tells me we might be seeing the last season. As low as it's fallen, the hole it would leave behind would be cavernous.

Biggest wtf was Tony Hawk showing up. I don't even remember what he did.

Because this was widely discussed in this thread last weekend, I'm now linking you guys up with a timely release from 60 Second Simpsons mainstay Jims @ NoHomers.net who just put out this retrospective on the Who Shot Mr. Burns? two-parter and its many clues and mysteries.

Simpsons Mysteries - Who REALLY Shot Mr. Burns? (Part 1)
Heh. I never knew that the clocks were supposed to be this form of symbolism throughout the episode.

Listening to a lot of Simpsons songs atm. Currently at Senor Burns with Tito Puente.

‎"Revenge? Of course. But why stab his frail body when I can set his soul on fire with a slanderous mambo? Listen please, if you will, to my revenge. UNO DOS TRES!"

"We call this one the Chief. He's been here since 1968. Never says a word. Never moves a muscle."

"Hey, chief."
"Hello."
...
"Well, it's about time someone reached out to me."

It was great during early teen years to watch classic films like Cuckoo's Nest and realize that entire Simpsons episodes parodied them. Or just finding the smaller gags and homages in random episodes from old movies. :D

FXX is running a block of Krusty episodes today. I guess they're getting everyone ready for
his father's death tonight in the season premiere.
