The first moment in Simpsons' early episodes to really set the tone for the rest of the series (imo) is at the end of Blood Feud, when Marge is trying to figure out the moral of the episode and Homer suggests maybe it doesn't have a moral, "it's just a bunch of stuff that happened." Seasons 1 and (to a lesser degree) 2 were closer to family sitcoms of the time that would always teach a lesson by the end of the episode, and that was them throwing that convention out the window.
Just an FYI that Maggie Roswell (Helen Lovejoy, Miss Hoover, Luann Van Houten, Maude Flanders) has been diagnosed with cancer.
Her roles have been handed off once before to Marcia Mitzman Gaven during the brief pay dispute that kept Roswell off the show from Seasons 11 through 14.
