How was tonight's episode?
There were two new episodes actually.

The Saga of Carl Carlson was the episode I was most excited for going into this evening. It was fine and inoffensive. Not many great gags but it was at least different from the usual routine which is typical of Selman-run episodes.

Dangers on a Train was a pleasant surprise. Boasting one of the tightest scripts and the strongest Marge-focused plot of the HD era, I was completely surprised. My favorite episode of the season and the only one I will actively go out of my way to recommend people to check out (I'm not as big a fan of To Cur with Love as many others). Lots of gags that worked and Seth MacFarlane was both restrained and effective in his supporting role.

That's really nice to hear actually.

Are there any indepth Simpson critiques that cover the new episodes? I haven't found any that make it to the movie. Many cover the Armin Tamzarian, Frank Grimes problems but those were 16 years ago and the more recent seasons are a whole other level of ass.

What level of indepth critiquing are you looking at?
Every modern-era episode gets dissected to hell and back over at NoHomers.net if that's the kind of thing you're looking for.

I rewatched Dangers on a Train again yesterday. Holds up extremely well to repeat viewings.
Encourage anyone that's not adverse to modern HD era Simpsons to check it out.
It's a quality episode.

There is this Zombie Simpsons thing that was making the rounds the other week. Pretty well-written and insightful, even if I think the whole zombie thing is unnecessary.

the part where the bear falls back on the audience and the feed cuts out had me out of breath when i first saw this scene.

i love the dramatic delivery of 'no, ben! no!!'

Yep! Gentle Ben is amazing. I wish I had it on me, but the faces of the people Ben falls on kills me every time.

NO BEN!!

I agree, that episode is great! The line delivery on that has so much character and emotion.

Season 1 may be one of my favorites just for how fun the animation is. I hadn't seen the original opening in so long.
Bapa, bapabapabapabapa bapa ...bapapa! For whatever reason that short exchange with Bart always made a big impression on me. Probably relating it to my dad. Love the visual gag at the end of shaving and it "pop"ping right back in. "Son, there's not a woman alive who can resist a man who knows how to mam-bo."
They did a great job animating the babysitter to make her as off-putting as possible, even scary back then.
But then this visual gag makes it all okay at the end because of the big dopey eyes.

What always amazes me is that when the simpsons was new it was seen as edgy or controversial. By todays standards it's nothing but back then I guess it was a big deal. Kind of shows you what the 90s was like.

It is interesting to think about. It tackled issues that weren't seen much elsewhere, getting away with more because it was a cartoon. It was just so rich with satire.

Then things like South Park came along and pushed what was acceptable on television even further.

Fast forward even more and you could argue things like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia took what would only be seen in cartoons and put it in live action. At least that how's I feel.

Going back to it now it all seems so innocent.

They also brought a lot of issues into discussion that were topics of the time. Vegetarianism, gays, etc.

No joke, I was scared as a kid when I first watched it. I used to dread a woman like that would kidnap me or break in. I was only like 4 when I first saw it like 20+ years ago. I remember looking out of the windows and double checking etc. Same went for the tree house of horror when Willie was Freddie Krueger. I used to have a sadistic uncle who'd make us watch scary movies like Halloween, child's play, nightmare on Elm Street as a kid and that Simpsons episode would always bring back memories.

On a related note, I just saw the flaming moes episode today. So good, even after all these years.

Hah, they've got season 3 playing where I am. Today was Flaming Moe's tomorrow is Burns Verkaufen der Kraftwerk, which is an episode you'd like.

O whacking day, o whacking day,
Our hallowed snake-skull cracking day.
We'll break their backs,
Gouge out their eyes,
Their evil hearts,
We'll pulverise.
O whacking day, o whacking day,
May god bestow his grace on thee.

Have you tried this game called Simpsons Tapped Out for iOS/Android? I got so fed up of the whacking day update in it, I don't think I can ever watch the original episode again without thinking of the game and all the whacking I did.

Same sort of thing for me. I was around that age as well, at least I know I was younger than Bart or Lisa. A couple years later when I'd be left alone a little more in the house I'd think of the same scenarios. :S Didn't have the uncle, but I did see things like Alien when I was 3 anyway.
you are going to see a lot more of season 1 the next weeks since I'm starting all over again :3
Yes!
That episodes was supposed to be the very first Simpson episode & nearly tanked the entire series due to the animation.
Wow really? That's mind blowing to me. Tanked because of the cost or because people didn't like it at the time?

edit:
There's something about how Homer was voiced in these episodes that make scenes like this even cuter/sweeter. Maybe it's that he was more humble.
