The Sly Collection |OT| Fly Cooper: Band of Deeds

Still have to continue with that damned end boss of Sly 1 where you have to put buttons to avoid and if you miss one you die... I think the buttons on screen don't resonate well with when you have to push the actual buttons.

Took me 3-4 tries. The button push window is pretty lenient, but it's more about rhythm.

After going back to finish off the Sly 1 master thief runs and getting the platinum, I started Sly 2 and played it continuously to the end. Just platinumed it as well. Will probably wait until Sly 4 is months from release before going through 3.

Overall, I have to say I prefer Sly 2 to Sly 1 but just barely. They are different in so many ways but both have strengths and weaknesses. A combination of both would be perfect.

Sly 1 had great platforming. Much better than Sly 2. However, the overall mission structure of 2 is so vastly superior that by itself I have to give the game an edge over the first one. Sly 1 didn't really make you feel like a thief. It was just a straight platformer where you run to the end of a level to get keys until you have enough to fight the boss. Sly 2 made you feel like a thief with all the heists. Frankly, it is what I was expecting from Sly 1 when I started playing. There is a build up in each chapter leading up to a great final heist mission. I love doing missions to prepare for the payoff.

I can definitely see how some people dislike the game because you have to play as Bentley and Murray and I agree that they sometimes drag down the game but I enjoyed the variety of missions and play styles that they brought.

I have to say though that the bosses and minigames from Sly 2 are terrible compared to the first games'. I loved the minigames from Sly 1. They were a great change of pace and almost all of them were fun. Sly 2's mini games are really bad. Honestly, the only ones I thought were somewhat fun were the hacking minigames and RC chopper minigame in Episode 6. The turret shooting was just godawful and I groaned whenever I had to use it.

The bosses were also much better in Sly 1 with the exception of maybe Panda King, I preferred all of the Sly 1 bosses to their Sly 2 counterparts. Jean Bison was actually a cool boss fight.

If they took Sly 2's mission structure and combined it with Sly 1's platforming levels, minigames, and bosses, it would be the perfect game but since the missions are such a huge part of the game i'd have to say that Sly 2 was better.

Agree with your post. Aside from the increased presence of Murray and Bently, I think I might actually prefer 2 to 1. I loved the big level hubs, they were full of personality and hunting for clue bottles across rooftops was a blast. And I liked the heist stuff as well, it was fun to see it all come together at the end of the mission.

Sly 1's tight platforming levels + Sly 2's city hubs - Murray & Bentley = my ideal Sly game. And there fucking better be clue bottles.

Pretty much exactly how I feel. Sly 1 was probably the better game, but I preferred the heist setup structure in 2 more just a little more. If Sly 4 has both straight forward platforming stages and open-ended hub levels (and mostly Sly gameplay), it would be perfect.

Finally finished Sly 3 last night.

I'm the opposite of you guys with Sly 2. The hub world/mission structure in Sly 2 didn't work for me at all. Too many missions seemed tedious as hell to get to in the first place, then once you get there way too many of them had you going all over the map jacking keys, or even worse something like an escort mission around the entire level with a TNT barrel or a stupid bug. Plus, like Sly 1 I thought it ended on a low note with the final boss fight. There were some good levels in the game (mostly in the second half of Contessa's level and Canada), but the rest wasn't much fun at all.

I should have hated Sly 3 even more than Sly 2, but strangely enough I didn't. Some of 3's minigames stretched out into levels were awful (I swear Guru and Penelope are the shittiest of shitty friends, and the pirate ship battles...wtf man). The one thing Sly 3 had going for it was a more focused mission structure. Sure, half the missions weren't any good, but at least they were fairly quick to get in and out of. Final boss fight was actually decent for the first time in the series. The challenges weren't too bad either, they weren't much harder than the first time around, and most took less than 2 minutes to complete.

Overall I guess I'd put it Sly 1 >> Sly 3 > Sly 2. Still looking forward to Sly 4 though. If they could somehow just package all the best elements of the first 3 into 1 game they'll have made an all time great platformer.

Final count in the collection: 3 platinums/4 100% games on my trophy list, and one broken dual shock (stupid 4 on 1 pirate ship battle).

Platinum'd Sly 1. Great game, much shorter and simpler than I remember on PS2. Also, just as frustrating in places with the 1 hit deaths. Same feeling as back on PS2 though overall, a brilliant game that doesn't get the credit deserves. It was always 3rd place against Ratchet and Jak.

Yeah, I just started playing Sly 1 and the sound balance on the movie segments is fucked up (in weird channels, distorted, overloud). Otherwise the game plays great though, fun to go through it again.

Got lucky and snagged this from Target for $15. Having never played the Sly games before , I'm new and loving the experience so far. Just a few missions into Sly 1 and I find myself having to find and complete everything. Great game so far.

I picked this up when it came out, got half way through Sly 1 and then just stopped playing, just didn't really get into it.

So after finishing Dirt 3 I got stuck back into it in anticipation of Infamous 2. Sly 1 is a great game. It had the perfect blend of the meat and drink platform levels and the vehicle/shooter levels. Pacing was excellent, the only problem I had was no checkpoints on the bosses... especially that certain stupid FUCKING CROCODILE BOSS AAAAAAAHFFF<DSS<.

I'm about 2/3rds the way through Sly 2 and apart from the odd Sly mission being excellent, the game is dull and actually quite tedious. The hub worlds were clearly designed around Sly's moveset so getting around as Murray and Bentley is a complete pain. Not to mention their missions usually rely on a gimmick which is then drawn out for way too long. It does look great in HD though. Also Carmelita's 'new' VA is terrible, why'd they ditch the one from the first game?

Annnnd that's where my save file is still waiting. Someone on here gave me a good tip for beating it but I still haven't put the game back in my system. I was so annoyed by the 3rd or 4th try that I just didn't feel like trying anymore.

I'm in the minority here, but I found Sly 2 to be the best one in the series. Sly 1 boss fights were just awful and ruined the game for me, and Sly 3 was more like a mini game collection.

I still can't get past the bulldog boss in Sly 1.

I also prefer Sly 2's Carmelita Fox.

I liked Sly 2 the best as well. The Canada level is awesome.

Agreed that Sly 3 was the weakest.

Really my only real problem with Sly 2 was the 4th level (The Contessa) and that was mostly because of the bullshit wolf statues.

Once I realized your physically dodging the buttons floating through the air and not trying to time them with Sly like a music game the Croc battle is easy.

I just picked the game at Target... $14.99

I agree, after thinking back on the all three Sly's that I played last year, the Canada level is the one that sticks out the most. I loved everything about it.

I loooooooooved Sly 2's structure. The individually tailored platforming levels were amazing in Sly 1 and I missed them, but I feel like Sly 2's open worlds were carefully designed and each mission was unique and interesting and fun to do--something I hadn't seen done really since the GTAs for PS2. Very impressive, in my opinion. The whole heist feeling was stupendous.

After seeing the new Sly games and considering I'm a huge inFamous fan, I've been considering getting this. How well do the games hold up?

Graphically they look great. Gameplay wise I can only tell you about Sly 1 since it's the only game I've passed and I would say Sly 1 alone was worth the money, amazing game.

I just got the Platinum in Sly 1 and 2 but i'm not sure if i'll play 3 now. Never played it before but based on people's impressions it's bad? (was a lurker until today :) )

If you liked Sly 2 enough to platinum it, there's no reason you won't like Sly 3. They're practically the same.

Thanks for the really quick reply. I enjoyed the latter stages of Sly 2 a lot (Canada especially) so i'll give it a go after I finish LA Noire.

You and I, sir, think almost exactly alike. I'm just going to add a little of my thoughts (of course!).

This is my first time playing through any of the Sly games, and I'm having a great time so far. Even though I'm currently only on the 2nd "city" in Sly 2, I pretty much completely agree with what you said about it. At first I was very disappointed that Sly 2 cut out a lot of the simplicity of Sly 1. During the whole first level I HATED that it had kind of turned into an open world game. There is nothing I hate more then wasted time just backtracking back to the safe house to change characters.

Then something funny happened. I got to the second city and spent my first 45-ish minutes just hopping around the city looking for clue bottles... and I LOVED it. I felt like I was stalking around the city scoping out my territory. I was engaging enemies to learn their patterns, ticks, and attacks. I was finding the most effective paths to get from place to place. I was humiliating guards buy stealing everything from their pockets and then killing them. Maybe this will wear off by the 4th or 5th city, but for now I'm really digging it.

I also really love the presentation in Sly 2. Instead of the missions just being glowing portals to levels (Mario 64 style) they now show progression towards your ultimate heist. I'm also really enjoying getting to know the bosses a little before you fight them. Instead of them just being an end boss they now seem to have more personality, which is a great thing.

Lastly, best mini-game thus far has been the ballroom dancing (music timing / memory game) . I was grinning from ear to ear like and idiot during that thing for some reason. Perhaps because it's a way better implemented version of the Croc Boss from Sly 1 that I really liked until I died the 4th time and had to just button mash it out. Or perhaps because Sly looks hilarious in that Tux. I wish you could choose to wear that for the rest of the game.

how long/hard is it to platinum these games? I bought it around Xmas, but haven't opended them yet. Is it easier with the MOVE?

I got the platinum trophy for 1 just playing normally. I don't care about trophies at all and put in no extra effort to get it. It just happened naturally. I think it's my first and only platinum trophy so far.

I don't know about Sly 2 and 3 though. I haven't finished 2, and haven't started 3 yet. But the annoying rate at which the trophy pop up appears makes me think 2 is just as easy as 1.

The Move support is only for mini-games... and not the ones in the actual games. It's a separate mode in the starting menu.

Sly 1 took 7.5 hours to Platinum for, while I think Sly2 took about 16!

Oh I've been meaning to ask, did anyone else get freezing in Sly 2 where everything would go quiet, with a looping image?

Yeah I know, I just thought long would be about 10 hours. It felt that long, I was amazed when I checked my savefile

I never encountered that but I did have Bentley fall through the world and I had to boot back to the xmb.

That happened to me with sly in the final battle in Sly 1 , though he fell into lava and died, still annoying though.

Nice, I might pop in 1 as a "break" game from my Uncharted "Crushing" run, which I'm sure will make me scream like a chick...

So close to that last platinum for Sly 3 but of course all the challenges add to your percentage and that damn 100% trophy is still eluding me. Grrr

Bit of a dilemma. I own and loved the hell out of all 3 Sly games for the PS2. Beat each one thoroughly. Should I still splurge and pick this collection up just for the 16:9, trophies, and remastered HD graphics - even without the Sly 1 Master Thief commentary unlocks?

Still without luck

If you are ever going to want to play the games ever again, you should get the Sly Collection.

My copy arrived yesterday and I starded Sly 1, its fun and challenging, I never played it on PS2.

If you did not play it before, give it a try, its worth playing.

BTW

How do you win those time challenges?, I cant beat the first one, do you need any special thief ability?

Hehe, just got the Platinum for Sly 3 after months of finishing it.
Some of the challenges were annoying, hope Sly 4 will be good =)

Just moved my PS3 from my Sony TV to my living room which is a 50" Panny G20. I noticed the menus and cutscenes on Sly 2 aren't going to the sides of the screen (G20 set to overscan OFF), did anyone else notice this? It's a bit odd. More annoyingly, I discovered my Sony LCD has two overscan options, one for full hd signals and one for anything else. Looks like I only set the 1080 one, oops.

That's "Full Pixel" or whatever term they use, displays the whole image coming in as it were, for games like GT5 and other sorts I always have to change their screen size in the options depending on what TV in the house I am in, rather annoying, but my main gaming TV in my "game room" as the gf calls it is full pixel.

No idea why they missed it though, after a while I just started to ignore it, but I don't know why they would not sort out the menus and other such parts of the UI when making everything else fit with modern widescreen displays.

Really having fun playing through this collection. I had only played the first game last gen, and I flew through it in the last couple days and got the platinum. Nice little game, but too easy and WAY too short (I was surprised getting the platinum trophy didn't require beating all the time trials, which I never would've bothered doing).

Sly 2 seems like a much better game already, and I'm only on the first mission. I like the objective based stuff, and the hub worlds are way more fun to explore. Combat is way better too without the one hit kills, and I like that they implemented a health meter.

That was my first impression of the second game too, but then the hub worlds start getting way too obtuse and hard to freely explore, and the objectives start being a drag...

Well, hopefully you won't feel the same way. I took a break from the Collection after getting the second Platinum and haven't played Sly 3 yet. Hopefully it gets better.

Staaarting to feel the same way, unfortunately, and only on the third world. Mission structure just isn't designed all that well and it's starting to feel like a collect-a-thon. Speaking of which the hardest thing to do in the entire game is to collect all 30 bottles in each world, but there's no trophy for unlocking each world's safe? What?

Also, now I'm finding the combat frustrating. "Stealth" attacks still alert surrounding guards for some reason, resulting in way too many instances where I run away strictly to avoid fighting enemies that take 6 hits to defeat.

And it's extremely inconvenient to have to trek back over to your HQ to change characters for different missions. Giving the player the ability to switch on the fly would have made a lot more sense.

Still though, there's a lot to like. The graphics are so unique, and translate stunningly well to HD. Perfect games to remake. Also, it's pure platforming bliss. The game feels flat out great to control. I'll keep trudging through just because I like flip-jumping around as Sly so damn much.
