Gotta say... bar the last level, Sly 3 is an enjoyable game and much better than 2. Better pacing, game length and less shitty missions that aren't repetitive. It has better hub worlds too, especially the pirate level, which broke the game up nicely.

Overall I'd go Sly 1 = Sly 3 >>>>>> Sly 2

I have to second this. But I'd put 3 over 1, simply because it's far and away more refined than any entry in the series. They're in no way comparable, IMO.

But yeah, after 2 dragging its feet and generally screwing up 3 reminded me just how fun this series is. Bring on 4!

Man, these RC car minigames in Sly 3 are such a chore. Avoid the blue security beams. Race the lit fuse. Meh. Defending Murray with fireworks is a real stinker too. Definitely liking Sly 2 more than 3.

At least now I've reached the fabled pirate episode.

Wow I'm really happy haven't passed on this collection, Sly cooper is actually a great game!

First I wasn't so impressed, the design and the pacing seemed to be too bland for my taste, but the game keep on improving and improving especially in the level design, and I love the variety and the stealth elements too.

Its so rare to see a platform game of this quality on the next gen, I'd even say that its from the games of rareware and nintendo, in the n64 era, that I wasn't so amused by a 3d platform

Now I'm really pumped for sly 4 ;) Great work sucker punch!

Ok. So I finally sold Black Ops back (I'M FREE!) and used the $$$ to pick up Sly Collection since I have a rule and I've met my game quota this month. I have never played a Sly game before.

Here I go! Sly1:

Like

-More challenging than I expected.

-This game is gorgeous! It's not new-PS3-game gorgeous but Sly pops and looks great while the levels look good enough. There's some disappointingly low res stuff (like the moon in the opening scene) but overall it's a visual treat.

-The voice acting and writing is funny and high quality. I enjoy the back and forth between Sly and his turtle pal.

-The platforming is refreshing and I like the stealth themes thrown in.

-I'm digging the music and sound effects. Hearing the notes as Sly walks and sneaks is cute.

-Game is easy to sit back, pick up and play which is something a lot of games this gen are not (stressful, demanding of time, whatever else).

Dislike

-More challenging than I expected.

-The emphasis on collection. It's not a huge deal nor is it shocking but I find it a little boring and lazy when I'm told I need to find 8 keys - now do it!

-This one-hit-death thing. My first encounter with the belly flopping enemy ended in instant death because I didn't know how he behaved and I die in one hit. Other times it seems more unfair than challenging like those lantern-octupi shooting homing missile sludge at you for more instant death.

-Double jumping works different than I'm used to. In other games you jump and while in the air (a.k.a. when you realize you need it you tap to double jump). Sly seems to double jump only at launch, tapping again in the air only causes him to roll but grants no air. Led me to some deaths (surprise!) because I couldn't reach a ledge or dodge an attack as I expected.

-Game over explains itself but it does it in an entertaining way so I'll cut it some slack.

-The O-for-action is a little inconsistent. You can let go of it if you're climbing something but you can't let go of it if you're "sneaking" sideways with your back to the wall. So that led to some deaths.

-I wish the coins were easier/more fun to pick up like in Ratchet.

Overall I'm enjoying Sly as I thought I would but there's more to like (and dislike) than I expected. It's aged surprisingly well and the game looks great. I'm having fun but there's also more frustration than I'd like (right now I'm doing the shooting/crab/chest minigame and it can get a little ridiculous you only have to shoot the chests, not touch them...I deem it un-ridiculous). Sly Cooper is a great change of pace and a nice surprise.

Still on Sly 3 ... still more minigames. Man. Those minigames.

Racing rooftops with the RC car. Rowing the boat again. Cannoneering. Almost an hour's worth of a Sid Meier's Pirates clone. Scuba chases. More weird bossfights. Mass-hypnotizing sharks. When will this ever end.

I really like playing as Sly. I wish the game would let me do that more. It's not even worth exploring the hub levels anymore, because they cut the hints and the loot. The only reason to "free-play" Sly is to farm moniez.

Sly 2 is my Sly game of the year 2010.

It just keeps on giving. So I've hypnotized the sharks. Then I've played a Superman 64 UNDERWATER level. Controls completely changed from the other underwater level I've played not an hour ago. Then I've played another round of RC car shenanigans. Now I'm back in a biplane, fighting dogs, figuratively. I haven't done a single second of regular old Sly-Coopering since digging up that treasure chest, let's say two (game) hours ago.

Done and done. 58% in-game completion .... but I've seen the ending? Ah, challenges! Most of them are replays of minigames, only harder, with time limits and less health. And fuck them all. Not doing any of that shit ever again. I don't need trophies that desperately.

Imagine: Sly Party Gamez indeed.

Good to have played the first two Slys though.

I'm disliking the minigames in the first Sly, so 3 sounds like a nightmare. :(

It's a shame, too, because the core levels of Sly 1 have been absolutely awesome. Up there with Ratchet and the first Jak and Daxter.

I've been playing Sly 2, and I have been enjoying it, but I hate the vehicle controls. In particular, controlling the tank and the RC tank really tested my patience.

Yeah, even in Sly 1 the minigames can be annoying. In the escort minigames the cannon is inverted which made controls a nightmare but luckily I could swap. The racing mingames controlled poorly.

I'm in the final episode of Sly 1.

So. Many. Keys.

The game showed it's hand pretty early but I'm having a lot of fun with it. Tons of frustration, mostly commands not following through as I feel they should (jumping and hitting O but I don't land on the piece of wood, I fall into the water and die. That kind of stuff), but enough fun to make it worth continuing.

The dialog is charming but there was so much potential to make it really hysterical. Instead there are some hits and plenty of completely cheesy and not funny misses. That pretty much sums up Sly 1 for me, lots of fun but plenty of misfires. I don't want to collect fish and shoot tikis, I don't want to race for the third time.

Time to wrap Thievius Racoonus up.

Played Sly 1 for the first time and I have to say it's really good. Only done the second "world" but there's a few things I'm not liking:

The Health System
I don't mind the 1 hit death thing since it makes me more cautious in the main levels but I really don't care for having to collect 100 coins for an extra hit or hoping that there's gonna be pick up somewhere.

Boss Battles
Just not a big fan of the whole Crash Bandicoot style wait for them to do their thing and then hit them when they're done. Also not helped by the health system especially since both the ones I fought have multiple "stages"

Minigames
Actually they're kinda fun so far (except that crab one) but I love the core gameplay so much that it feels like a shame that they aren't proper levels.

Bentley
Fucking stop telling me how to open safes I know already.

Any GAFers done with this game and looking to sell it? I don't know what it goes for but if $20 shipped works for anyone, please PM. If that's a lowball, please let me know what a fair offer would be. Thanks!

I've pretty much come to a halt in Sly 3. It gets too far away from the core gameplay and I think I'd be okay with it if it some of the minigame type stuff was more fun, but a lot of it isn't. Since I've played it before there really isn't much drive to get it done at the moment.

Just started Sly 2. I like:

-Actual thief missions
-More emphasis on stealth/espionage gameplay from crawling under tables and vents to snapping pictures and repositioning satelites and even the stealth take-out move.
-THE HEALTH SYSTEM! So much better now. The one hit death was so obnoxious, this is so much better.
-The writing and voice acting seems improved (Carmelita's voice especially).

edit: :lol So that got old really fast. Now that I've gotten further:

-Too much wasted time going to and from mission locations
-The over-explaining and hand-holding is even worse now that I'm basically briefed before I head out, when I get there, during the mission and after. Stop fucking talking so much!
-Missions are boring little things like blow up a disco ball to damage a sign? Wtf.
-I hate playing as Murray and Bently.
-I like the increased spy gameplay but it came at a big price - much of the fun platforming is gone. Climbing a few boxes in a room to get from one pick-pocket subject to another isn't the same.

Sly seems like a very misguided series. The first one had some flaws but was solid, the second one changed more than it probably should have. Everyone seems to hate the third. I felt bad that it was the underdog but it seems just that it never reached the heights of Jak and Ratchet. Not sure how much more of Sly 2 I can take and not sure if I'm going to bother being excited for Sly 4. Who knows what the hell it'll be like.

I'm happy I was able to play Sly 1. At least that good came out of this.

I just finished Sly 1 and started 2.

Sly 1 was a really solid game. I loved the stealth mechanics and the collection of the bottles was actually a fun "collect-a-thon" for once. The minigames sucked, however, and I hated the journey to the last boss. It just felt like a totally different game.

I don't know why when they have such good core mechanics that they felt the need to include these crap minigames. Was it for "variety" or just because creating more full levels was too time consuming? Either way I don't like it.

Regardless of those complaints, Sly 1 is definitely a very good game. Not quite up there with the best platformers, but thoroughly enjoyable.

I'm now about half an hour in to Sly 2 and I really like the addition of a health bar, a bigger focus on stealth and, surprisingly, the open-ish world. I hate what they've done to Murray and Bentley though, I hope they revert to their previous characteristics soon. The focus should be on Sly, not his friends. Take note from what happened to Sonic!

With that said the complaints in the post above me sound like things that would annoy me, so I'm not sure if I'll stay so positive about this game after I put some proper time in to it :lol

This collection showed up in the mail today(along with RDR zombie thing). I really enjoyed The God of War collection, can't wait to get started on this. Having 3 games in one is a bit daunting actually, that's a lot of game. How long are they on average?

Sly 1 is different from the others in that it is more of a pure platformer that will last 8-10 hours-ish (give or take on how obsessive you are on getting 100% including the master thief time trial sprints).

Sly 2/3 are longer given the more open-ended "mission" design. Each runs in the 15-20 hour range ballpark, again possibly moreso if going for full completion.

As somebody mentioned here before, i would certainly consider taking a long break in between the games. You are looking at 40 or more hours of gameplay so there is a risk of burning out on it. I loved Sly 1, jumped straight into Sly 2 but got burned out halfway through (also due to the game itself i guess). I think i'm going to wait a few months before continuing.

During my vacation, I beat/platinumed the Sly 2: Band of Thieves.

My initial reaction to Sly 2 was disappointment. I only played Sly 1 back in the day, and I was bummed out that they removed the linear, tight levels of Sly 1 in favor of open level hubs and small missions with goals like collecting shit instead of just going from A to B. Plus, I hate Murray and Bently so I wasn't thrilled about having to play as them.

Still, with all that in mind I think I've had even more fun with Sly 2 in the long run. It's a much bigger and more ambitious game than the first and the highs are higher, the lows are lower. The game looks great and I love the levels (Paris and Canada especially). I get a kick out of moving on to a new level and taking some time to exploring every nook, cranny and roof top for clue bottles. The missions are hit or miss, but the bad ones are painless outside of a few extra shitty ones like that Murray tank mission. I've even warmed up a little to playing as the sidekicks, Bently has a few pretty neat missions once you unlock all of his gadgets.

So overall, I'm lreally liked the game even if it occasionally pissed me off. It ran a little long but I enjoyed it till the end. I started Sly 3 but I was not happy to see the clue bottles were removed entirely. It looks great and there's a new city to explore, but it's not the same when it's empty. Oh well.

Totally agree with this. I'm almost done with 2 and I must say I stopped having fun pretty early on, as soon as I realized that almost all the stuff I liked about 1 was gone (i.e. level 2).

Where is my plaforming? Why do I have to go back and forth to and from the hideout again and again and again ? Who's the pervert who designed the RC controls ? Why do I have to play as Bentley ? WHY IS THE TURTLE STILL TALKING ?

It's an ok game but a real disappointment after the first instalment.

Sly 1 >>>> Sly 2 >>>> Sly 3.

Not saying Sly 3 was a terrible game, but after finishing Sly 1 I was really excited for Sly 4 on PlayStation 3. Now, I will be really cautious. I can't stand the new formula (more characters, more minigames, less Sly, no bottles).

Just finished Sly 3 yesterday. Definitely my least favorite of the three. I just need to do 10 or so more challenges and I'll have the platinum.

I cannot understand anyone who could hate Bentley and Murray.

Hate is a strong word, I guess I just find them irritating, mostly because you're forced to listen to Bentley so often in the unskippable cutscenes. I got tired of him pointing out the obvious in his whiney, nasally voice.

By the time I finished Sly 2, I was somewhat endeared to them, though.

Finished the first one in 2 play sessions. Long breaks between them though. It's fun, but a little bare bones. The controls are solid, I liked the minigames to break up the clue collecting stages. The different abilities are useless, hopefully they won't be in the second game. I like the idea of staying away from spot lights and guards carrying around flashlights, good design choice. Most of all, I'm hoping for some more involved platforming. Something a little challenging, complex and something that doesn't rely so much on the circle button.

EDIT: I don't know what you guys are talking about. The first hub world is so much better than anything the first game had going for it.

Just finished the Sly 3 platinum. The challenges weren't too bad. I remembered a few being tougher from when I played it on PS2, but I don't think any of them took me more than a few tries this time.

Yeah. I sold this shit for 20ish bucks, which was good. Sly 1 was good but flawed, Sly 2 is so boring and disappointing. I can't.

The India chapters really suck, but the game gets so much better after.

Chapter 4, when you're chasing Contessa, was great and is where the game picks up again imo. I'm on Chapter 7 right now, in Canada. So fun.

Just picked this up. Never played the series before.

The first game is fantastic so far, and the 3D is nicely implemented.

So far this is really well done! I think everyone should have a go at this one.

Almost finished with the first game.

Having a lot of fun, with one major complaint. Occasionally I will die because the command input to grab a vine, jump onto a railing, or perform a QuickTime-esque button command seems a bit off, and i have to go all the way back to the previous checkpoint, which can get very tiresome. I have had a few moments of extreme frustration.

2 & 3 were way too drawn out. There was a good game in there somewhere under all the crap.

Playing Sly 1 now. I'm at this boss battle with Mz. Ruby.
I fucking hate the quick-time events I have to do and I hate the lack of checkpoints at the different stages. It gets really bad at the stage when you jump up that mosquito and they come quickly to you... Are there any upgrades you can get that could help you or something...? Or is it just trial and error?

I must say that replaying the games now makes me feel that at least 1 >> 2. Including the one-hit system (I don't like how some ennemies require several hits, system they added to compensate the life bar). The open-world with stealing elements is interesting, but sly platforming is over everything else (bentley, murray, minigames, anything other than platforming, in fact)

I still have to replay 3, I don't know yet how I'll feel about this one.

Sly 1 was mostly a really good game, I would like 4 to be close to this one, personally.

Not sure if I understand you well, but
there's a slowdown motion that I guess can work on this (not sure you'll have it at this part of the game, but I think you can have it... also not sure it work). But I really think that the best way to beat it is learn the pattern. You can press the buttons really early, you will never press them too early, IIRC. I found this boss far too easy, but on the other hand, I finished Space Channel 5 on my first try and played an awful lot of Unison, so I guess that's my kind of game...

Platinum'd Sly 3 today, so now ive done so to all 3 games. It was great playing these games again and the
Sly 4 teaser while super short
looked great!!

The challenges to get 100% in Sly 3 were kind of annoying though...

It's nice to have them all on one disc, but I think they did a sloppy job.

A few points, and I'll be back with more later.

1. It takes forever to get past the inititial logos and copyright screens, and when you get to the main menu and pick a game, you have to see the original games logos all over again! It takes an ETERNITY before you get to the gameplay.

2. Why do I need to see the Sony Move warning? I haven't connected the Move. I don't own a move. I don't plan on getting one. Why can't I skip this silly intro screen. It only adds to the frustration.

3. Prerendered movies playback in a tiny little centered box, which only take up 50% of the monitor, if not less. It's nothing huge, but together with the other annoyances, it just doesn't come off as a product of love.

Getting extremely frustrated with last boss fight, can't seem to finish it.

Goddamn, i am glad we have moved beyond these bullshit, arbitrary rules / mechanics in game design. 'Oh, whoops, you were 1/4 second too late with your arbitrary button press during this 20 minute long boss battle, time to go back to the beginning and start all over again!'

Eff that noise!!

Replaying this series really makes me hate the fact that this team is wasting their time on such a boring ass game like Infamous. C'mon guys, get back to making games that are actually fun, not ones that are insanely boring and appeal to comic nerds. :( They should be continuing the greatness that was Robots on Wheels and Sly Cooper.

Finally put my hand on the HD Sly 3 after I hated it to death on PS2( forced my way just to see the ending back then), and yeah I still hate this ugly abomination.

They killed the platforming, for me this thing called Honor Among Thieves is no Sly game, it's shitty mini games collection , RC mini game , Airplane Dogfight ,pirate ship mini game, hit buttons to active traps , arena fight, and other stuff all the time,I can't believe Sucker Punch did this to the series , there is no actual Sly gameplay in between of these mini games, just go to that location and do some mini game, also the lack of bottles and vaults just destroyed it completely.

Story, well is just not there this time since this game is "hire a team go to da final mission" style ( also were Sly 1 and 2 felt they were for kinda older audience with darker stories 3 felt like for younger kids. ,the ending is kinda satisfying tho) the worlds/levels are boring, all of them, unlike Sly 1 and 2 where it was amazing and fun to go and explore, these world feel so dead, (changing Carmelita's accent and voice for the third time was a the only thing funny , it's stupid but funny).

Sucker Punch ( or whoever working on the rumored new Sly for NGP or PS3) should go back to Sly 1 ( or even 2) again and forgot that Sly 3 ever existed.

Been playing this the last couple weeks. Now I'm stuck in Sly 3 at the first ACES tournament (dogfighting). Sound cuts out and beating it anyway doesn't do anything. It just stays on the shot of Sly flying into the distance :( About to give it a third try...

I'd hope Sly 4 brings back a focus on platforming as Sly himself. Take some lessons from inFamous and go from there.

I'm having some problems here folks. I purchased the game last week and I'm having problems accessing my save files. They're right fucking there, in my save data folder, yet they're not there when I try to load them up in game.

Could it be that the copy I have now is a EU/PAL copy and the one I played when I was just renting was a NZ/PAL version?
