The Sonic Frontiers| New combat presentation is live

I think it looks fun too. Don't understand the hate at all. Maybe its just cool to hate on Sonic? What we have seen so far is traversal and combat.

1) Traversal looks more fun then most open world games out there so what is the problem? You can still jog like in other open world games if you want to 😆

2) Other people are saying it looks like Kingdom Hearts and DBZ. Yeah so again where is the problem? DBZ and KH get good reviews. I am excited because it looks like it is using the PSO2:NG engine and PSO2 NG combat is awesome.

It reminds me of people's reactions to Wind Waker here at GAF once upon a time. They hated what they called Cel-da. I guess we should call this Breath of the Hog! 👍

This game looks like something a fan made in Dreams.... they take some random, somewhat realistic landscape, throw Sonic in it and you just run around with no real purpose. Even the piano music sounds like something a fan would do... something catchy but out of place.

Disgusted No Way GIF by Schitt's Creek

This game looks like a CHORE TO PLAY.

Who in their right mind thought it would be cool to have relaxing piano music in a Sonic action combat phase?

WHO!?

Hedgehog of the Wild. Someone was obviously VERY inspired.

Actually, if they could just somehow take Sonic and make it so he could run around the Hyrule map, that would be better than this game.

It's nice that Origins exists finally, I'll grab it in some future sale. RIP Sonic. It's time to take the old dog in the back yard...

They need to take notes from the Capcom team that made Megaman 11, you don't really have to reinvent the wheel to make a good Sonic game.

I think it would help if we saw more small, weak enemies in the environment dotted throughout the landscape. I think that will eventually show up. These videos were more meant to stress the wasteland feel, discovery and intense fights with no one expecting this kind of reaction. I have no doubt eventually we will be reading the developers in an interview assuring fans and telling them to ease up before fully judging this one.

They should learn how to do proper combat...

For platformer it doesn't need to be deep but it need to be fun instead of tedious.

They probably though "hey, what if we create our own Breath of Wild take but with Sonic on it?". They're probably thinking is an easy task to just create a convolunted open world mess, put Sonic objects/plataforms on it and call it a day.

To me it feels like they are trying too hard to impress people with realistic environments and graphics instead working on what used make Sonic good.

There is NO way this is releasing this year. I just can't fathom that at all. It looks so... goddamn barren and lifeless.

Do we really want the same old shit over and over though? enough with the old.

Sonic needs a complete revamp in game design, they are still using stuff like jump platforms and bounce balls, the game looks like it was designed 20 years ago. They need to come up with a new way to play Sonic in 3D, not re-use the old stuff that was mediocre in 1999.

Exactly my thoughts on it.

A slipshod mess thinking its some fresh modern take on Sonic for ripping BOTW right down to the piano notes...

With fucking PSO graphics and art copy/pasted over.

JFC Sega sell the license already.

Great point. How do we make Sonic open world? Why don't we take a bunch of the same old platforming ideas and paste them around this giant map while trying to figure out a point to it as we go?

I would take a 2D Sonic any day compared to this.

I'm gonna assume you're liking Frontier cause it's the weirdest take I've seen on Sonic ever, adding verticality and exploration, slow puzzle like combat instead of fast paced combat, elevator music instead of rock music, open world, etc. I see plenty new here, everything screams Not Sonic though.

Wow this looks like a turd, why show it off in this state?

IMO if you have to make a 3D sonic, it just needs to be courses kind like 3d world but with a sonic twist.

Day one.

Not ironically, genuinely. You guys are nuts. Looks like one of the best Sonic games in years. Kind of reminds me of the reactions to Pokemon Arceus, which is basically the best Pokemon game ever made.

It's amazing how bad this looks tbh. Felt like they just had some random intern play an alpha build and called it a day.

Don't know why they would show their game like this.

I LIKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! He has a nice set of combat moves. This game won't be for everybody, but it's sure as hell for me based on what I'm seeing. I always accept that people play games in a much more boring way than I do. It's sometimes painful to watch because I like to get good at everything and master every little thing to make me look as flawless as possible while playing.

Video compression sucks, but this game is for me. Just like I'm sure DBZ Kakarot wasn't for everyone, but was perfect for me.
Now I understand why you like Halo Infinite.

The music in both this and the previous trailer certainly do not help matters and neither does the somewhat muted color balance, though I guess we all know what existing game these trailers are trying to invoke. I just wish SEGA would take a more straightforward approach to the Sonic franchise and attempt to make a solid, conventional 3D platformer. Sure, they can have some largely on-rails speed sequences and the enemy auto-targeting, but focus on tight controls and fun platforming around the individual stages. While I hate to say it, they're clearly already looking towards Nintendo, so might as well crib some notes from the recent Mario games.

I hope so. Really do.

Redacting the rest of this comment (well, what I wrote before editing it); I do still have concerns but I'm gonna actually watch some of the footage over and let it simmer, think on it and see what I really think. They do have more enemy variety later in the video and there are definitely things about the approach I'm liking. so I definitely can't say it's anywhere near an "non-salvageable mess".

At worst the game will probably be middling like Frontiers. But there's potential it could be a lot better than that game. And outside of the enemy variety (which again there's more later in the trailer), my only other complaints are the DBZ-style attack, the jarring cut in camera angle for one of his attacks (the one where he ping-pongs all over the place kinda), and the fact picking up rings requires seemingly pixel-perfect accuracy.

All of those are things they can easily fix between now and launch. Music choice, too. Seeing that none of that is about core game design, physics etc. that's actually a pretty good thing. But, leaving things like those kind of rough in the final game will bring it down, so I hope they're addressed.

this game looks meh, the future of going fast is electric jesters.

Looks cool, but it's screaming for Sega ninja lawyers to hit them with DMCAs, C&Ds, the whole nine 🤣

I don't play it but someone mentioned that both the environment and the majority of the animations for sonic attacking have been lifted from PSO2 NG and even said it's very similar to one of the classes although I can't recall which one. Does anyone here play it?

Im #1 Sonic fan, and i like even Sonic 06 (but loading), but this game looks boring, empty, no purpose, its...Weird...And the relaxing music don't fit at all.

This open world tendency is so stupid. I want more like this;

My hype for this game has plummeted so far, whoever is showcasing the game isn't making it look good at all. :/

I think these IGN first are going to do more damage than good.

100% confirm sanic games made in dreams would look, run and play better than this crap.

The combat system is undoubtedly new. Now Sonic is more an action game than a platform game, and this is not good for those who wanted a classic Sonic.

But after all it's not a problem to have a different type of Sonic, I mean, we had a racing Sonic, a running Sonic, a RPG Sonic, a fighting Sonic game, why we can't have a Dark Soul Sonic?

lol "combat", you mean button mashing occasionally interrupted with circle running around armored enemies, I can also see the player trying to use quick step but sonic is not even locked onto the enemy, that combined with the stiff movement and downgraded animations lacking satisfying punch makes the whole thing feel abysmal to control

....and since this is open world there's no doubt that they'll introduce some sort of skill tree for that sweet sense of pride and accomplishment
