The Sonic Frontiers| New combat presentation is live

They are, by far, the best designed levels in any 3D Sonic game.
Imo the levels are less interesting than Generations. There's less divergence in the tracks and more levels that flat-out suck (the arctic level, ugh). That said, while I played through all the boost games sequentially about half a year ago and I definitely remember Generations being a huge step up in level design, but I think I'd need to play them again now to have a more specific criticism...

(What hit me most actually when I replayed them all was how unfun Colours is. A lot of reliance on janky 2D platforming sections with awful controls that make simple maneuvers overly difficult.)

I disagree. Generations had inferior level-design in my opinion. They added too much 3D platforming which is super imprecise to begin with. Unleashed introduced, embraced and nailed the boost formula. Generations iterated on it, but there are some miss-steps.

Generations generally flows better, I die less in those stages.
That's simply because the game is much easier, less demanding. But honestly, there are many instances where I find the levels to be pretty poorly designed in Generations. Especially the 3D platforming as stated above.

Where did you have difficulty with the 3D platforming? I found it very easy to jump and land exactly where I wanted, and aiming the boost is usually not an issue. I find the 3D sections more interesting tbh since there's usually more opportunity for optimisation.

This camera is so bad, really seems like it was supposed to a different game that's been adapted to be a Sonic title.

The short cut to the left at the beginning of Chemical Plant is a complete joke.

This shit is looking so rough.
It's not just that the music is bad, but it's like a 10 seconds loop...and the animations? are there animations even? it can not look any jankier than it does and its supposed to be promotional footage, damn.

How is it that this one man fan made project looks infinitely better than a SEGA backed game?

this is exactly how sonics movement and lvl design should be aproached on a sandbox setting to translate the concept of the 3d and 2d games, i mean, faster, but with the same idea of momentum.
I thought of this exact same prototype when the game was announced, im really dissapointed on Sonic team's showcase.

Sega is dead. Time for Microsoft or McDonalds to walk in and buy their IP for a few bucks and a happy meal.

1: I don't think Microsoft would know what to do with most of Sega's IP given MS are still figuring what to do with some of their own IP and struggling (i.e Halo)

2: Sonic's not the only Sega franchise; they put out a lot of other stuff (especially between them & Atlus) that are generally very well-received and a lot more consistent than Sonic has been for the past decade.

Which just kind of highlights the fact Sonic is the one IP that seems to struggle with consistency.

If they had just turned this into an open world and thrown in some metroidvania I'd be happier.

That actually would make a for a pretty cool Sonic Mania follow-up; 2D Metroidvania open world-esque design with classic Sonic-style levels and environments.

Or they could do it 2.5D, as long as the physics actually matched classic Sonic's and not end up what Sonic 4 was.

I LIKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! He has a nice set of combat moves. This game won't be for everybody, but it's sure as hell for me based on what I'm seeing. I always accept that people play games in a much more boring way than I do. It's sometimes painful to watch because I like to get good at everything and master every little thing to make me look as flawless as possible while playing.

Video compression sucks, but this game is for me. Just like I'm sure DBZ Kakarot wasn't for everyone, but was perfect for me.
Maybe they should have had you demo it for them.

I was rooting for this thing after the first demo... this was a BAD demo 100%.

And the boring, repetitive piano music... absolutely ridiculous that is in there.

We've now entered the stage where people aren't even allowed to like it.

I genuinely don't get swayed by other people's opinions often. When I see the gameplay footage I think it looks extremely fun. The people trashing this game in here comes off as hysterical exaggeration to me, but they can feel however they want. As I said before, it really reminds me of all the pre-release talk here on Pokemon Arceus. Sometimes the exaggeration gets quite detached from reality.

I'm not ruling out the game could be good. My first post from earlier was positive... but I do feel this was as close to an objectively bad demo as you can get. Removing the overlay (I'm convinced by the gems being collected into the bottom right corner of the screen that one does exist and is just not being shown) was a mistake. Contributes to the feeling of emptiness. The music choice is absolutely terrible. And it's repetitive nature suggests it also is a placeholder. The player deliberately and repetitively demonstrates the enemy is invulnerable in certain states.... and after the 3rd or so time it becomes frustrating to watch them attempt to damage the enemy in an invulnerable state. The animation of Sonic is janky. There are elements to it ( particularly after a scripted animation where Sonic just appears to float momentarily) that go all the way back to the jank of Sonic Adventure 1. This game also does make the 2006 Sonic mistake of trying to place cartoon Sonic in a real world. The model would be 100X better off looking like the new movie version to correct this.

I think there are only 2 possible outcomes from this thing if this truly represents the current state of the game.

1.) Delay
2.) Released to the wolves to be torn apart.

But ... youu CAN make almost anything seem terrible with bad editing, music, etc. So we'll see!

I haven't given up on the game yet, but they weren't thinking with these IGN showcases.

1. There better be actual stages

2. Even if there are actual stages, they need to make sure the open world segment in-between stages isn't boring. So far, it kind of seems like it will be. Like, what is the purpose? What does the open world add to the experience?

3. Unless this footage primarily showed bosses/mini-bosses, these critters take entirely too long to kill.

I'm a huge fan of Boost gameplay but so far it seems like this team put literally zero thought into the structure of the game. They just put Unleashed Sonic into some generic open world and called it a day.

I wish they made a Sonic Heroes remake/sequel. That was a good 3D Sonic.

The Sonic Team behind Sonic Heroes was not the same behind this game.

People get attached to dev/company names, but the folks behind some great are not even in the company anymore.

I saw people asking from RARE the remake of Banjo, but most of the RARE devs behind the first B&K are already out of the company, some of them even created that other B&K clone game.

Sonic 06 vibe all over again

C'mon it does not look THAT bad. Sonic '06 was outright broken, buggy, and unfinished. Other than some camera snapping issues with one of his moves this game doesn't look buggy or broken in gameplay.

But I guess that's what actually playing the game will prove (or disprove).

SEGA is famous for NOT doing that.

Actually that is true. And that's a good thing.

Actually, while everything you said about 06 was true, it was at least more graphically polished and consistent than this demo.

06 also had a vision, which Frontiers doesn't seem to have based on how this looks.

06 looked great and played bad.

This looks bad, and seems to play bad too.

I was thinking more about why Sonic doesn't feel good to control when he's not running on a course... and I think it has to do with momentum...

Sonic should control like Mario when he's just jumping from platform to platform and walking slow... and then when he breaks a certain speed barrier he should start glowing and that's your signal that he's now controlling more like a car on a track.

Went back to watch the video that started the "hire this man" meme and its uncanny how close the first demo of Frontiers is to this

Like I said last time. Give Sonic 3D to either Insomniac or Nintendo. Sonic Team just cant do it
the idea is cool and I like world but it just looks like some amateur shit

Sony needs to buy Sega then move the sonic team into making mobile games. Cause that's what I saw, a mobile game. Insomniac interns would do a better job with Sonic. Then again why would they buy Sega. I guess Sony Pictures needs more games to make movies about, that could be a reason. They wanna be the game movie studio.

So true

Sonic Unleashed (Day Levels) are the best 3D Sonic game period and the OST is incredible
