What the heck went on with this game's localization? The main dialogue and skits are first class (thank goodness), but what happened with everything else? A lot of the non-dialogue and menu text is really awkward and some of it just reeks of Engrish. It's like they threw in the first translation draft and didn't touch it up in some places...

There's also greater than average number of typos in non-voiced dialogue but it at least reads fine otherwise.
You did get the game a couple of weeks after the JP release...

They said the English version was being made in tandem with the Japanese, so I expected a bit more. At least they had their priorities straight and did great with the story and skit dialogue.

I hope they at least put out a patch that gets everything else out of early beta stage.

I can't even see your pictures from work, but it sounds like you're stuck in the same place I was. In the red room (the area connected to the crystal place, with the monsters in jars) there's a pair of switches on the floor on the left and right sides that extend the bridges you're looking for.

Yeah, it was actually something reaaaaaally stupid.

You know those two switches to activate the light bridges to the stairs down? They wouldn't activate for me.

Turns out you have to go up to the final save point and WATCH the final cutscene or they won't activate since you could potentially skip that scene by going up the right elevator from the bottom to Duke.

So I spent 2 hours last night stuck down there running around ladders and then I had to run back up to the top again, watch the scene, run back down again and activate it :\

Yeah, I got reaaally unlucky. I ran to the right once I heard the noise it was open and never went up and saved at the stairs.

The scene that mentioned finding Cumore's house also mentioned a gate; you're actually supposed to speak with a guard near a gate in front of the castle.

Yeah, there's a couple of semi-strange things like that you can find. Like the one in that second oasis village, where some random lovers carved their names in the inn. Or the random list of all the Tales of the Abyss characters and character traits on the back of a sign in the coliseum town. I don't really get their purpose or meaning, but interesting anyway.

That one you posted is definitely the biggest WTF though.

Get a second TV to entertain yourself, equip minimum damage on Rita and spam Tidal Wave pretty much,

Here's what I do:

Give Rita the Minimum Damage(from Sash +1 I believe) and Spell End(not sure what weapon this is from) skills. You can also give her OL Bonus 2, OL Boost, stuff like that if you want.
Get a Risky Ring from the Casino and put it on her.
Set everyone to Defend and give them Taunt to help boost your OL gauge, though if you don't have Taunt it doesn't matter much. Also make sure they're set to not use Fatal Strikes or they could mess everything up.

Get Blue Dice if possible(One's in Keiv Moc behind a bush you need to burn, another can be synthesized, not sure if there's any more), set it to Hard for additional Grade, and head over to the desert then OL and spam Tidal Wave. You'll get a decent amount added for attacking with an attribute they're weak to, even though you'll still only do 1 damage. Try to aim for a 999 combo atleast once to get 20 grade from that, then just keep doing it for as long as you want. Since it would take forever to actually deplete them of all of their health you can just start killing them with Fatal Strikes, though whenever you do be careful with your remaining OL gauge so that you have enough to cast a quick Tidal Wave again. The only thing that matters is FS links, and you could get 100 links of 1 or 1 link of 100 and they'd still count the same, so if your combo breaks it doesn't matter.

Sizeable influences on grade:
- not getting hit
- ending fight with max HP and/or max TP (per char)
- FS chains (these are what you abuse with Rita method)
- executing FS
- executing mystic arte
- combo length
- time to complete battle

Most of all, stuff to avoid:
- attacking with a weapon/arte that the enemy absorbs
- ending a battle with a bad status effect on a party member

When you get strong, you'll end up getting a grade of 5-6 for beating battles in <5 seconds.

YESSSSSSSSSSS! Somehow lucked through Secret Mission 17.
I did like 9 Destruction Fields in OL3 and he started staggering and I stopped just in time. I realized Estelle wasn't set to Defend and she almost screwed me over. Hit him with Rain like 4 times and he did the animation. Thank god. Finally.

Once you get the ability to synth Blue Sephiras, do it. The extra cash is practically necessary until you can unlock the casino. 4 Blue Sephiras = around 10k per fight, and about 100k for giant and boss fights.

at least, if you're like us and immediately do every bit of synthing and farming that becomes avaliable.

MURDERED Posiedon, first boss I tried the Rita Overlimit on.... was hilarious.

God, for real. Rita's powerful enough without going into Overlimit. When you do it just becomes absolutely ridiculous.

So I have to say

seriously, what the FUCK is up with bonus dungeons this gen in jrpgs?.

Between ES's repeat of 1 room for hours, and LO's annoying unfun 2 room rotating tower, and now Vesperia's no new assets and GRIND FOR 3-6 hours depending on random luck dungeon, this is getting out of control. I don't even remember what BD's bonus dungeon was like so I can't comment on that.

It seems like this gen developers are just trying to waste hours of your life pointlessly for the sake of it.

Bonus dungeons are supposed to be HARD and fun. They are supposed to be really long dungeons that are as good as the dungeons from the main plot but longer and with much harder enemies and a super boss.

Finished the game around 60 hours and then spent another 10 doing some post game quests + bonus dungeon. Overall I thought it was a pretty good rpg, and a great Tales game.

Pros:
+Characters are likable, no real annoying characters outside of
Alexiei
+Battle system is the best 3d Tales battle system yet. More enemies + wide range of skills + pretty good artes = lot of fun.
+Final dungeon was great
+Loooooooots of optional subquests. More than Abyss and that had a ton.
+++Tons of costumes and accesories for stylizing your characters.
+Story is great for the first act, then generic rpg for the rest. But at least since it's not terrible and annoying and the cutscenes are short I'll call that a plus.
+Secret missions were a neat idea
+Flynn
+Graphics are excellent throughout, no framerate problems or loading or tech problems like certain other rpgs.

Cons:
-Downing enemies seems to happen way more frequently here than any other Tales game. It's annoying having to set your AI characters to not use a chunk of their artes that down the enemy if you don't want to have an AI knock the enemy down and break your combo mid-combo. It also just adds extra seconds to the battles having to wait for the enemy to get up if you want to do a full ground combo.
-Game is really combo friendly, but the bosses just walk out of your combos or break out of them with overlimits all the time. Kinda makes the combo-ability of battle system pointless in the long run.
-Cast could have been a little more lively, Yuri is great but I don't really think any of the rest will be memorable characters years from now like other Tales characters.
-Music was really weak
-Dungeons were generally pretty dull. Not much too them other than running from one point to the other. Very few puzzles
-A lot of empty on the world map. Really could have used a few more towns or dungeons, especially optional stuff after you get the airship.
-TERRIBLE.BONUS.DUNGEON; I went my 6 hours back. What a waste of time that was.
-Also the game was kinda easy for a Tales game. Didn't really have that intense life or death feel in boss battles outside the optional super boss
duke form 3

Obervations:
-Judy seemed like a better character gameplay-wise. You grab the enemy and fly out of the battle arena so no one can interrupt your combos. You also miss being hit by most attacks because you're in the air. Unfortunately the enemies/bosses who can't really be lifted turn her completely useless since her ground game sucks.
-Mastering every recipe with someone is a pain in the ass. OTOH, cooking was pretty useful in this game.

Overall I'd say it's about an A-/B+ rpg. It's fun and doesn't have too many flaws but it doesn't quite stand out as something amazing either IMO. Very few Tales games do. Placing Vesperia vs. the other Tales games I've played I'll go:

Abyss > Vesperia > Eternia (mainly for the cast) > Symphonia > Rebirth (for the GREAT battles, even if the story sucks) > Destiny 2 > Phantasia > Innocence > Legendia > Tempest. Still need to play ToDr & finish KoR though.

While I disagree with some of you pro/con comments, I'd agree mostly with your overall rankings.

Abyss is definitely the better game between the two even with the horrid pacing and overworld loading (though it does have the better battle system :p)

They're clearly head and shoulders above the rest. Two good Tales games consecutively... be afraid.

Echoing Bebpos sentiments. Can't beat Abyss.

Abyss > Vesperia > Destiny 2 > Symphonia > Eternia > Rebirth > Phantasia > Innocence > Legendia > Tempest.

Also still need to finish KoR and ToDR.

It is kind of disappointing, as Vesperia was on its way to being better than Abyss. The first 2/3s of the game were truely phenominal. The story was interesting and tense. It was held together by strong characters and interesting events. But the last 1/3 of the game, while no means bad, is just so much weaker than the first parts that I'm beginning to grow tired of running around doing side quests and just want to hurry up and beat the game.

No kidding. That's why I never did the Rita Overlimit. Then I decided, "Why not?".

Wanna guess what happened to the boss AFTER Poseidon? >=D (That bitch went DOWN)

Favorite line of the game, "It's called mana. Actually, its name is much longer and complex, but mana will do.".

It's no coincidents. The main Tales team that worked on Symphonia worked on Abyss and Vesperia. This Tales team is becoming Infinity Wards of Tales team, if you know, what I mean. :)

I guess that they moved the dreaded middle section of Abyss to the end this time. I think, they believe the game has to be 60+ but I'd rather have a compact dense experience than a long game with buncha fillers.

pretty important to the story :(

ok, while I enjoy that the dog map quest is giving me plenty of time to train Yuri in his altered arts, I have to state that this is the most boring and tedious side quest ever. I have what I can only guess to be 20 % of the bar left to fill and the whole damn map is blue.

You don't have to fill the entire map with blue. It doesn't work that way; you only need to do it once for each named Field on the map. Easiest way to do it is to go to each region one by one (following the list of field names in the map), and in the menu double check the name in the upper right to make sure you're in the right region, and use a mat or whatever then, and do that once per region. Of course, the other dog will still keep going, so you may need to redo one or two at the end, but, at that point you should be able to tell what's left over easily. You may have some red bits left over, but, it doesn't matter for the quest.

Go to the hot springs on the Yurzorea continent.

More sidequst questions from me:

What do I have to before I can do the 100 man coliseum fight?

Why can't I enter the hotsprings yet? They say it's being cleaned.

Where the hell is the giganto monster in Yurzorea?

I was talking to some doctor guy in Aurnion with Estelle. He's no longer there. Where did he go?

A knight in Aurnion asked me to gather some materials and I gave them to him. He asked for some more afterwards and now he's gone. Where the hell did he go?

I did 4 warehouse puzzles with Karol. Is there another one?

The Hunting Blades gave me a letter of challenge. Where can I find them?

Way too many sidequests in this game. :lol

The hard part is that most are either time locked or have sections that don't show up until you move the story along or accomplish something else.

You need 3 letters of challenge to get in. The hunting blades(which you have), one from Flynn...I think you either get this naturally or just talk to him in Aurnion, and another from Gauche and Droite. For them you need to see them in Capua Torim, go to Ehmead Hill and get a fire lily, then go to Mt. Temza for a scene, and finally head down to Zaude where you killed Yeager.

I think after you enter the first time and hear it's being cleaned it'll open up after a certain amount of time, not progression in the story.

Is that Griffin? I think, the one that's supposed to be near the spa...yeah, I had trouble with that. I'd just put on a holy water and run around the area until you see it spawn, but it took around 5-10 minutes to get him to do that for me.

Not sure about any of the other questions, sorry. :p

At least you can master recipes along the way on your playthroughs. The waitress sidequest is pure concentrated bullshit that prevents you from doing much else until you're done. At least it's done and over with for me.

That's Nam Cobanda Isle. It opens up near the very end of the game. Like right before the last dungeon. There's a good amount of sidequest related things to do there.

I wouldn't say you're overlevelled... I just finished up the final boss on normal and my party was ~65-66. I did happen to do the secret mission though, didn't know what it was since I haven't been following this spoiler-free guide that I've seen float about this thread.

That battle was freakin' intense, he went down with half my party dead right after he did his Big Bang attack for the 3rd time. Took 8 minutes... heart was poundin'

I dunno, I found the battle fairly easy which is why I was asking. The issue with this game was that most of the dungeons had narrow corridors which made avoiding enemies impossible.

Finished the game. Will post thoughts later.

Try getting the fell arms though, then you'll fight the true final boss.

Hm, just read on GameFAQs. Thought it'd be a different boss. Guess I'll be doing that next and will be fighting a lot more conservatively >_>;; I used up most of my life bottles this time since I wasn't really using Lemon Gels. I'm assuming the EX dungeon also has its own secret boss right?

So I went to the hot springs, talked to everybody, went into the hot sprints, but the slots (the things in the back the gym, not the capsule machines) are still saying they need to be hit with a coin or something. Are those ever unlocked? ><

Also, is it just me, or does the poker game have a malicious tendency to, if you have a King, give you a Joker on the Hi-Low part?

Yep. The secret boss of the EX dungeon is none other than
Kratos. After fighting him, you get a letter of invitation that opens up the 200 man melee at the coliseum.

Just finished the game last night fighting
Duke's true form. Talk about being totally anal with attacks and artes! Thankfully he never used the Brave Vesperia mystic arte at all, otherwise I'd be in for a world of pain. My entire party was level 89.
