This bit of "logic" has got to stop. You are certainly yourself, but there are a wide variety of titles and labels that all compose who you are. I swear, it's ONLY gamers that act like their "title" is somehow the reason people don't like them, rather than the other people with that title who have poor behavior.
 
Chalk me up as another one who hates the term 'gamer'.

Any use of 'game' as a verb is an immediate turn-off. "I game on a PC." Bleh.
 
It means nothing, they are just trying to get attention. And people who play those sorts of games for attention are usually people not worth paying attention to, in my experience.

Pretty much. Like I said in another thread about this subject, you'll find very few episodes of Top Gear where you don't hear the term "petrolhead". No one gets upset about that term. It's accepted and even embraced.
 
Makes no difference to me. Don't see why anyone would take particular offence to the term. Write "Man Gamer" as the title of your stream if it helps you sleep better at night.

Considering how commonly expressed things like "girls don't exist on the internet" and "girls don't play games" are, is it any surprise that some girls push back vocally? I've never been one of these types, but I don't begrudge those who are.

Exactly. "Otaku" is a negative term in Japan that Westerners have taken and embraced as a good thing. I don't get what makes "gamer" so special.

Angry's a very strong word! I'm not starting a hashtag campaign here, kid.

I think the reason it winds me up though is that it kind of denigrates the art a bit. It gives me the impression that it's making a show of "look I'm doing a male hobby and I have boobies! Come at me boys!"

To summarise - by identifying yourself as a girl gamer, you seem (to me at least) to be affirming that games are a male 'thing'. And that perception makes me a bit sad.
 
Generally how I feel about all labels really, if you have to go out of your way to say you're a _insert thing here_ then you're probably not and trying too hard. But then again I'm kinda glad those people put that out there as it acts as a warning beacon for me not to interact with them. I mean if you're on Twitch you're probably going to be into games anyway right? It's just redundant.
 
People who seek to label themselves generally get on my nerves. As other people have said in this thread, if someone refers to themselves as a hardcore gamer, or something of that ilk, they get the same reaction from me.

Thanks for being incredibly dismissive. Why do you think a lot of these things say "yes, I'm a girl gamer. yes, I exist"? What do you think that is responding to?

Attention seekers exist in every area, but not every person identifying themselves as a girl gamer is necessarily seeking attention for herself. Some people are just tired of being discussed as figments of imagination.
 
I don't really like the term. I mean it doesn't bother me if a girl wants to be labeled as that. It's her choice. I just don't get why being a gamer doesn't = everyone including both genders. Having to stick the gender in front of the hobby/action makes no sense to me.

First things I think:

"it's an attention seeker"

No matter what gender they are I automatically think that they are immature, loud mouthed, and annoying.
